Resolved: “there are no biological differences between men and women”

From Canada. Discussion of discipline handed down to Wilfrid Laurier University graduate student and Teaching Assistant Lindsay Shepherd for playing a 3 minute clip of University of Toronto Professor, Jordan Peterson, debating Canada’s bill C-16 which has criminalised the use of certain gendered pronouns. The problem was that because it is against Canadian Human Rights laws to use personal pronouns that are not the specific pronouns an individual has stated they wish to have used in referring to themselves, Shepherd was hauled up before the University complaints tribunal because she had presented both sides of the argument on this issue in a classroom using a video of Peterson to show one side of the argument. What has made it a worldwide sensation is that she taped the discussion of her meeting with the complaints tribunal which must be listened to in full to understand where things have now reached.

Here is a video from the United States that explains the background, but before I go on, I do have to say how outraged I am about the way he discusses Canadians. Nevertheless, in spite of his clear racist anti-Canadian attitudes, in the interest of understanding the story, here is the video discussing the entire episode which has an excerpt from her tape of the interview by the complaints tribunal which really gets to the heart of the issue.

Finally, here is the full recording of her discussing the issue with the University. Runs more than 40 minutes but worth your time. The disturbing notion presented by one of the academics was the philosophically-empty equation that “Opinion minus Evidence is Prejudice” (O-E=P) with the only form of evidence apparently permissible being publication in a peer reviewed journal. Once control over what is published in peer reviewed journals is sealed up (see the debate on climate change which is even brought in by one of the professors) certain ideas can never be presented within an academic environment. So they have to provide students with a “critical tool kit” before they are permitted to hear different opinions. Try this on for size (33:35):

“Everyone is entitled to their opinions but we have a duty as educators, as scholars, as academics, even as public intellectuals to make sure we are not furthering the kind of what I call charlatanism”.

Such self-delusion! Makes you sick. And there is little doubt that the same idea would be found at the highest reaches of the academic world.

Terrifying. She is astonishing and brave. Dissidents come in all forms and it is fortunate we are still able to bring these things to the attention of others. And like she says herself, her enemies are “insane”. But let me just add that while she has become very famous for her personal bravery, the person you should pay attention to is Jordan Peterson himself. Let me present you with a bit of Peterson as well, where he is discussing, among other things, a statement by some other professor somewhere that “there are no biological differences between men and women”. Peterson begins at 2:17.

In a just world, Lindsay Shepherd would be a hero to feminists everywhere.

As it stands, she’ll have to settle for just being a hero.

Something chilling and evil about those low-verbal IQ gobshites stumbling their way through ideological nonsense whilst the poor TA tries to respond reasonably. And talk about living up to stereotypes- the visage of the two male offenders in photos. Way creepier than Harvey Weinstein in my opinion.

Yeah, Steve sorry mate, but what respect do Canadians deserve? They are hell bent on lodging their heads up their own arses and regularly put down other Anglo nations that don’t drink their cool aid.

I wonder if they have taken the time to reflect on what their muslim immigrants think of gender fluidity? Does a muslim women who identifies as a man still have to avoid muslim men during menstruation or – as the Canadian government allows to happen in government schools – have to sit up the back away from the others during prays?

Canadians went from the world’s most likable people to the world’s most virulent adherents to new speak.

There are now two apologies, one from her supervisor, and one from the university president, which reaffirms free speech. When heavily pregnant with my first child I took issue in a forum with an academic male, supported by a strident female, both of them claiming that there were no biological differences between men and women.

I think pregnancy constitutes a major difference, I said. Oh no, says they in unison, that’s just a uterus, nothing to do with your brain and the rest of your body. They sounded lunatic then, and still do.

It’s back to the future in Canada.

  20. Maybe it’s a question of not knowing stuff, like the uterus and its function is regulated via the endocrine system. If this is the case, how in fucks name are they in their jobs?

  21. FFS, our chromosomes are different, and exist in every cell in our bodies.

We (possibly, say, the IPA or the Heartland Institute) need to establish some king of political correctness index for universities.

Above a certain rating, a university would find no students of talent would want to study there, and no employer would want to hire its graduates.

The message would get through, and universities would start competing to lower their PC scores.

Common sense has been forced onto the WL uni:
“The president and vice-chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University issued a written apology to the teaching assistant Lindsay Shepherd, who was summoned to a meeting about a complaint for playing a video of Jordan Peterson for her communication class.”

Question: Is this one of the Laurier universities that paid Bill Clinton $17 million for almost no participation?

Unless we can forever be assured that all students are being taught how to think rather than what to think, the future for free speech will remain uncertain.

Above a certain rating, a university would find no students of talent would want to study there, and no employer would want to hire its graduates.

OK. The University of Sydney is winning first prize in Australia so far. It has the ridiculous Sydney Peace Prize; an Arts Dean who has expertise only in Queer Theory and alphabet people; a Senior Lecturer in Politics who while no longer the accused Hilton Bomber, still regularly barracks for Palestine’s explosive cause; a United States Study Centre which failed to register even a flicker of reality about the rise of Donald Trump prior to his election as President; a determination to destroy via feminazism up to a hundred years of tradition in the culture of its associated residential colleges; and it advertises that it is going to teach its students ‘to unlearn’ (i.e. indoctrinate them). SU also offered no protection from attacking Marxist thugs when Christian students simply wished to speak freely at a campus stall about the NO option many Christians wished to take on Same Sex Marriage.

The fear also is that its antique prestige is such that it may be given the well-funded Foundations of Western Civilization Research Centre to imprint with its own special stamp of oppositional bile. I don’t know if SU knocked back the Bjorn Lomberg Centre for Climate Adaptability, but it’s a fair bet that it would have done so were it ever offered to them.

Alas for my old Alma Mater. How low you have been brought, felled to your knees for fellatio by PC.
Ten out of ten for PC these days, Australia’s First University. Attention Dr. and Mrs. Worthington, looking for a place for young Amelia or Alexander, your bright and nurtured offspring. Don’t send them to SU. They will be denigrated and indoctrinated there, not educated, unless this ship is turned, and soon.

There is of course a standout field of other PC Uni contenders in Australia. The disgraceful PC retreat on the Lomberg Centre now belongs to the University of Western Australia. The University of Adelaide has Julia Gillard as its professorial expert on misogyny, so enough said there. Victoria’s La Trobe university has a variety of intersexual Marxists funded by your taxes into a thinktank which has created the unsafe schools program, pushing gender fairies onto four year olds and instructing in school hours to thirteen year olds that gay sex is the best sex.

I’m sure Cats can add more institutions and exampling to my random collection above.

If there is no biological difference between men and women, then the following actions are just the logical extension of that ‘fact’ and the equality movement:

    1. Canada can not participate in any ‘women’s’ events at the Olympic Games,

    2. All sport should remove any women’s only competition.

    3. Canada should immediately shut down all women’s and maternity health units and end any medical specialisation in women’s medicine because by definition, according to Canada, if there is no biological difference between men and women there can be no gender specific medical conditions like say pregnancy.

    4. Obviously there can be no gender specific schools – boys or girls schools – I mean if there is no biological difference between boys and girls how can you tell them apart anyway?

    5. Men’s and women’s toilets – gonski. I’m sure most women will be comfortable using the urinal found in almost half the public toilets in Canada.

    6. Women’s study department at Uni – well thats obviously got to go.

    7. All the government funded programs for women including grants and financial assistance to women.

    8. Collecting stats on women in the workplace etc. If there is no biological difference how can you tell who is female in the workplace and how can you legally ask without running afoul of these laws?

They need to apply Alinsky good and hard – make the feminazis live by the only logical outcome of their own arguments.

  34. John Comnenus

And who knew that this idiotic university has women’s studies courses and women’s only hours at the University gym? Blokes should just turn up and when they get kicked out of the gym lodge a complaint because they were him, men, male, mr, etc.

Let’s see how they deal with those claims, because as we can probably guess you can’t bring a claim for mis gendering if your a male.

Just as middle class Romans sided with barbarians to bring down their own oppressive government I fear that rational people will have no other option but to side with Muslims to bring this insanity down which, in my opinion, will be just as tragic.

It also bears repeating that JP is rendering a service of incalculable worth to young men today and is a warrior doing a very important job.

Cats may also want to listen to Dave Rubin and Brendan O’Neill’s latest interview, to watch them struggling to keep both feet on the Left, as the intellectual deck turns sideways and all their favourite furniture starts to slide overboard. It’s a fascinating time (again) in political history.

They’re trying to figure that one out as we speak.

This is why the TERFs are so vociferous. They see it as the erasure of women.

I find it darkly amusing that they were okay with the erasure of manhood and masculinity. It’s different when they come for your side, innit.

If males and females were the same ,why do male SSM couples have to adopt children? Brought into the world by females as it happens . Interesting point I heard on QI female turkeys can lay fertile eggs without male turkey intervention? Now wouldn’t that be interesting if Human females (apart from that woman in Bethlehem some time ago ) could do that? Imagine how k]jealous the SSM males would be ? Given I may be the one delivering it (medic for decades never delivered one before) should i be startled by the sudden appearance of a twig and berries where Id assumed there was a vagina?

This is of course the natrual result of allowing greivance studies to spread back in the 60’s.
Black/women’s/ etc studies were “siloed” and supposed to contain the insane as a backwater where they could be ignored. Following the gramscian march instead the tower of bullshit was instead allowed to spread, even worse its “texts” are accepted (on pain of sacking) as “scientific” writ.

“One word, Ma’am,” [Puddleglum] said, coming back from the fire; limping, because of the pain. “One word. All you’ve been saying is quite right, I shouldn’t wonder. I’m a chap who always liked to know the worst and then put the best face I can on it. So I won’t deny any of what you said. But there’s one more thing to be said, even so.

Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things-trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Aslan himself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones.

Suppose this black pit of a kingdom of yours is the only world. Well, it strikes me as a pretty poor one. And that’s a funny thing, when you come to think of it. We’re just babies making up a game, if you’re right. But four babies playing a game can make a play-world which licks your real world hollow. That’s why I’m going to stand by the play world.

I’m on Aslan’s side even if there isn’t any Aslan to lead it. I’m going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn’t any Narnia. So, thanking you kindly for our supper, if these two gentlemen and the young lady are ready, we’re leaving your court at once and setting out in the dark to spend our lives looking for Overland. Not that our lives will be very long, I should think; but that’s a small loss if the world’s as dull a place as you say.”

When I hear an academic use the word ”evidence” I cringe.
They have no idea of what the word means. They have no training or experience in gathering or evaluating evidence unless they have been practising law for a few years.

  51. We all have our opinions, but none of it matters without evidence.
I saw some evidence that supports the theory that there are no differences between males and females.
To this day, I can’t tell if the person in the pic below is a man or a woman.

    R.L.,

The legal system is also flawed with respect to evidence. Academia is a joke regarding evidence; the way papers are concluded with mealy-mouthed assertions of proof means that a definite proof is described in a manner very similar to being almost disproven.

As I see it, the malady that has infected higher education (and the chatterers in general) is lack of conviction.

There is no belief that they possess that they will assert is true even if other people don’t like it.

Someone comes up and makes the most manifestly ludicrous claim and they just accept it.

(Seriously, not that long ago a man claiming to be a woman would have been the holotype of the absurd.)

These people have someone make the absurd claim, and it is easier to demand that all of society (abstract, nebulous, not present as a single consciousness but in fact comprising millions of people) should adjust to accommodate the delusion.

And yet I would feel pretty certain that these trembling weeds have no doubt as to their own sexuality, have a very clear idea about what they are attracted to and would be truly uncomfortable should someone of the wrong type make amorous overtures. They all know gender is real. If they had any spirit they would exalt in it.

But…easier to knuckle under and lie to yourself than to be honest to someone else.

    Too much soy.

I know what Orwell would think of it all.

    ‘How many fingers, Winston?’

    ‘Four.’

The needle went up to sixty.

    ‘How many fingers, Winston?’

‘Four! Four! What else can I say? Four!’

The needle must have risen again, but he did not look at it. The heavy, stern face and the four fingers filled his vision. The fingers stood up before his eyes like pillars, enormous, blurry, and seeming to vibrate, but unmistakably four.

    ‘How many fingers, Winston?’

‘Four! Stop it, stop it! How can you go on? Four! Four!’

    ‘How many fingers, Winston?’

    ‘Five! Five! Five!’

  58. And you think that this idiocy is confined to Canada? Think again.

Our very own Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, Cordelia Fine of Melbourne University, has written two books, “Delusions of Gender: The Real Science Behind Sex Differences” and more recently,”Testosterone Rex: Unmaking the Myths of Our Gendered Minds”, claiming that gender differences are culturally mediated!

    https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/unpicking-the-myth-of-testosterone-rex

    These people are incorrigible.

I guess we must be delusional when we think that castrating our bulls changes their behaviour.

  59. .

Jordan Petersen spent 40+ years in academia and only just spoke up about this idiocy?

He deserves pity; not lionisation. At worse, he profited from the system until he was near retirement and had tenure as a full professor.

  60. Jordan Petersen spent 40+ years in academia and only just spoke up about this idiocy?

While there were signs of the direction feminism was heading decades ago, it is only in very recent times that the level of cognitive dissonance has reached the present levels. Peterson has been one of the very very few male academics in Canada who has challenged the new imprimatur to use special pronouns in addressing transponders. For this he has been threatened with dismissal.

His influence and important work goes way beyond this issue.

PS He has spent considerably less years in academic work than you have suggested. Are you confusing him with someone else? Suggest you look at his work.

As I see it, the malady that has infected higher education (and the chatterers in general) is lack of conviction.

    But why?
IMHO, our kids have been raised and educated to accept that everybody has an opinion and all opinions are equally valid. (just like all cultures are equal).

Why have they been raised that way?
Because when there are only “lets not argue, let us all come together in peace and understanding etc” type females teaching our kids, and all forms of competition…ALL FORMS.. are frowned upon, we end up with a generation or two of pissy young people who haven’t got the guts or the inclination to say “no you are wrong” to anybody.

Put simply, the matriarchal peacetivists have taken over from the patriarchal realists.

I can openly admit that I won’t risk my career on fighting lunacy around. Not only leftist/PC lunacy but all sorts of other lunacies.

My limited observation is that PC for most university administrators is simply something they are required to follow, not a core belief. There are some very fanatical people but usually they are not in charge. In North America their power is stronger due to student union pressure.

Vice-Chancellor Deborah MacLatchy offering her “apology” for the way in which Lindsay was treated, like she is guilty of harming the students but it has been embarrassing that all and sundry know about our totalitarian beliefs and methods.

As for supports in place to support (supports to support, articulate academics, how would we be without them) the poor little academics being abused etc,

“I remain troubled by the way faculty, staff and students involved in this situation have been targeted with extreme vitriol. Supports are in place at the university to support them through this situation.”

    Lindsay not persuaded by apology,

“As for her future at Laurier, Shepherd said she’s torn on what to do.
She continues to teach her tutorial and said she is being transparent with students and answering any questions they have.
But she has received next to no support from her classmates or department.
“Zero people in my department or the communications studies department have made a point of supporting me,” she said.
When she goes to her graduate class, “no one talks to me, no one even looks at me. It’s like, whoa, you guys — you guys have an issue.”
“I’m a person. So now it’s like I’ve turned into some sort of Jordan Peterson where my physical body and me being somewhere is some sort of threat on a safe space,” she said. “I’m not some scary monster.”

Putting her in Coventry is this university’s idea of support and freedom of speech.

She is also confused as to why the “university” is doing this as a response,

“The university has engaged an independent party to assess the facts of the matter including a review of related processes going forward. The review is intended to support improvement in our processes. The university is committed to ensuring that the vitally important role of Teaching Assistant supports an enriched learning environment for all students. “

To make sure future Teaching Assistants understand from the get go what supporting an enriched learning environment is about.

Fi an excerpt from the bombastic bully who led the attack, her Supervisor. Would she be allowed to get a new one given the one she has is so biased against her, and her approach to knowledge.

“I wanted to write to apologize to you for how the meeting we had proceeded. While I was not able to do so earlier due to confidentiality concerns, including your privacy as a grad student, now that the audio of the meeting is public I can say more. While I still cannot discuss the student concerns raised about the tutorial, everything that has happened since the meeting has given me occasion to rethink not only my approach to discussing the concerns that day, but many of the things I said in our meeting as well.

First, I wanted to say that when I was made aware of the concerns, I was told that the proper procedure would be to have an informal meeting to discuss it. In the process of arranging this, others indicated they should attend as well. This is one of the facets of working at a university, that meetings can often become de-facto committees due to relevant stakeholders being pulled in. My main concerns were finding out why a lesson on writing skills had become a political discussion, and making sure harm didn’t befall students. However, in not also prioritizing my mentorship role as the course director and your supervisor, I didn’t do enough to try to support you in this meeting, which I deeply regret. I should have seen how meeting with a panel of three people would be an intimidating situation and not invite a productive discussion. Had I tried harder to create a situation more conducive to talking these issues through, things might have gone very differently, but alas I did not.”

Really , he know realises that it might just turn out to be a bullying session. And one of the facets of universities is to go after any dissenters hard. Actually in my experience it is. Terrifying awful interview but it had its moments of levity. Like despite his claim that the meeting was called to discuss the matter, after he had been rabbitting on for quite some time about positionality and problematic yada yada, Lindsay tried to speak in her defence. Brusquely silenced with please let ME speak.

I love it when that twat academic states that right wing think tanks don’t do peer review as they’ve already pre-determined the outcome. that’s just a complete fabrication. I’d like to see some of that academic’s so called peer reviewed studies because I’ll bet my bottom dollar they aren’t reproducible because it’s all socialist bull-crap and not empirical. Makes my skin crawl listening to them. Poor girl. She or is it ‘they’ is under attack from complete morons. That university really needs it’s funding chopped until they correct their bullshit. And as far as Jordan Peterson goes if I were him I’d sue the pants off the pricks for defamation. Canada is stuffed if it doesn’t clean this up.
