A forgotten Australian novel about PNG – ‘The Fate of O’Loughlin’ by Dudley McCarthy

‘In the mid-1930s a tiny band of English patrol officers arrive in New Guinea and set off into the bush to civilize numberless tribes of headhunters and cannibals, to bring God and British law to the Stone Age. The result is a virile, riveting first novel featuring young Michael O’Loughlin, who arrives at the Empire’s scrap of a headquarters, accompanies his commander to a hanging of five bewildered headhunters, and then sets out on a wide tour of the jungle tribes to explain to them why such practices are evil. By a kind of clairvoyance each tribe knows all about him before he arrives. And the new code that O’Loughlin is imposing (it’s hoped that the natives will be civilized within two generations?) constantly comes up against tribal custom–though he is helped mightily by Imago, a sage native policeman. Death is seldom far off or avoidable when O’Loughlin’s decisions must be enforced, and his personal responsibility is a great weight. What’s more, he’s constantly fighting malaria and dysentery. His worst case: a mad native who has chopped six people to death but according to British law cannot be executed (because he is mad) and so must serve a life sentence in a prisonless village among people who have no idea why the killer is allowed to live. The novel’s last episodes fly quickly, covering the Japanese occupation of the island and British and native resistance; and there’s a final tragic vignette 20 years later when O’Loughlin returns as a U.N. observer and is kidnapped by native terrorists led by Imago’s rebellious Marxist son.’ [Kirkus Reviews]

Power is independently fed from both the North and South sides of the bridge for security as well as emergency backup Gensets and UPS (also used for emergency lighting in all tunnels).

  13. Some History

    Hey Some History, you there?
Push to make the Japanese more like white people:

C.L., it’s just some of the antismoking lobbying pushing the prohibition agenda in Japan in the lead-up to the Olympics.
When the Olympics (and Commonwealth) circus rolls into town, so do the constant, aggressive calls for smoking bans. The Olympic Games has long been used to push ideological agenda. The International Olympic Committee adopted a smoke-free policy before the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, adding pressure on cities to curtail tobacco use. 1988 was still the early days of the prohibition crusade. Yet the IOC had already adopted an antismoking stance. In 2010 the unelected, unaccountable World Health Organization (Eugenics/Prohibition Central) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) teamed up to promote what they see as healthy lifestyle choices. According to an Afriquenligne story quoting a WHO statement, the organizations want to encourage everybody to take part in sports, prevent childhood obesity and promote tobacco-free Olympic Games.

It’s now a condition of hosting the Olympic Games that, at the bare minimum, there is a smoking ban for the entire Olympic village, venues, restaurants and cafes. The fear and hate-mongering antismoking lobbyists then take the opportunity to push for more wide-ranging bans and antismoking policies (i.e., social engineering), to get the prohibition agenda entrenched.

If we think that the Olympics (or Commonwealth Games) is just a costly gathering of athletes in peaceful competition for entertainment purposes, we’re sadly mistaken. The IOC has all sorts of “stances/agendas” and partnerships with other groups. As the Olympics circus rolls in the intention is to alter a nation’s policies in line with what the IOC and its partner groups consider important and should be foisted on everyone.

Here is the sourpuss Judy Mackay inspecting the smoking ban measures adopted in Tokyo for the Olympic Games. The misocapnist/capnophobic Mackay is a WHO operative and a long-time antismoking fear and hate activist in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Commonwealth Games (example)
    http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/13117730.CG2014_in_Glasgow_will_be_smoke_free/

Just look at what’s been allowed to happen in Australia. We have a fully-fledged, State-driven hate campaign against a significant minority, all in the name of “health”. There’s nothing healthy about it. It doesn’t matter what party is in power, the persecution/punishment accelerates. This is what the unelected, unaccountable social engineers have in mind for all nations. Australia was simply stupid enough to go down the prohibition road with gusto.

Sydney would be rooted, but for how long?

    Inconvenienced.

The State Govt would reserve the habour tunnel for buses only and ban cars from the CBD to accommodate the increased number of buses. Some changes to Gladesville Bridge operation would be needed too. Nth Shore train services would go via Epping to the CBD along the new line from Chatswood. Inessential government agencies and many companies would find office space in the sticks. Life would go on.

Sydneyites are used to being inconvenienced. The place was horrid for a couple years leading to the Olympics and is moderately horrid again as Gladys builds her silly trams. I’m not up with the current degree of horridness as I avoid going there.

Tassie wasn’t rooted by the bridge collapse as the Bailey Bridge was thrown up pretty quickly.

“According to standard procedures, FDOT issued a permit at the request of FIU’s design build team to close SW 8th Street during the installation of the FIU pedestrian bridge on Saturday, March 10. While
FDOT has issued, following a request from the FIU design build team*, a blanket permit allowing for two-lane closures effective from January through April, at no time, from installation until the collapse of the bridge, did FDOT receive a request to close the entire road. The department was also not made aware by the FIU design build team of any scheduled “stress testing” of the bridge following installation and has no knowledge or confirmation from FIU’s design build team of “stress testing” occurring since installation. Per standard safety procedure, FDOT would issue a permit for partial or full road closure if deemed necessary and requested by the FIU design build team or FIU contracted construction inspector for structural testing.”

Here is the sourpuss Judy Mackay inspecting the smoking ban measures adopted in Tokyo for the Olympic Games. The misocapnist/capnophobic Mackay is a WHO operative and a long-time antismoking fear and hate activist in the Asia-Pacific region.

From the link is this criticism from Mackay of an air curtain to divide smoking/nonsmoking sections: “Dr. Judith Macky criticized strictly, saying we cannot prevent the side-smoke spreads to another area in the indoor space. When we deter from diffusion of a harmful tobacco-smoke, it is necessary to produce the energy equivalent to a tornado. It is impossible to settle the complete separate-anti-smoke system in a restaurant.

Most would not be familiar with what this is getting at. Many years ago the American misocapnist/capnophobe, James Repace, calling himself a “health physicist”, compiled a report for the Burswood Casino in Australia claiming that to dissipate ambient tobacco smoke in the casino would require ventilation air exchanges the equivalent of a tornado. Have you got that? The equivalent of a TORNADO. And the Burswood Casino banned smoking indoors on the basis of that report.

Prohibitionists don’t want accommodation of smoking of any sort. They don’t want smoking/nonsmoking sections. They want complete bans. And so they make up a load of crap to push for bans peddled as “science”, in this case that no ventilation system can dissipate tobacco smoke because it requires tornado-like air exchanges. And here’s Mackay many years later sanctimoniously peddling the same crap to the Japanese.

The sheer volume and extent of inflammatory crap that antismoking nut cases have been allowed to get away with, and are still getting away with, is truly mind-boggling.

From what I’ve seen it is because they are wearing medals of a relative; ie: on the right hand side of their chest.

Personally I think it’s not a good idea. It’s one of those things that will spread. Where does it stop

Hmm, I can see both sides. Thing is, some of the good things about Anzac Day is that it has been a long time since there was a large scale conflict involving lots of our people, so the numbers are naturally thinning in the March. Secondly, it would b good if one kid got to wea grandads medals (maybe a roster?) so they are more likely to remember it seriously.

The biggest risk for Anzac Day is the Marxist’s wanting to wreck it, either by disparagement or loading the March up with clown shows. The out know, the great Oxford St bath house war of 1964, or maybe some sort of confected Frontier war. You know they want to.

As I recall, Orsen Scott Card had a rather interesting theory in the sequel Speaker for the Dead in summary the purpose of civilisation is for the benefit of women. Men would be content with the hunting, summer raiding parties on the neighbours with a bit of loot and rape thrown in, while women have higher order needs and convinced men they really, really would enjoy a spot of civilisation more. More regularly. This is because men can spread their genes easily(see raids, looting and rape), while women have a lot longer term commitment to genetic transfer which is more likely to succeed in a more civilised network of villages.

OSC got himself into a spot of PC bother in later years, but I can’t recall the details.

What is FIGG Bridge Engineers’ role in this project?
FIGG Bridge Engineers, Inc. is the designer of the bridge, working for MCM. The project is part of a $19.4 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER grant, and was bid competitively using design-build procurement by Florida International University.
Is FIGG Bridge Engineers working with authorities?
FIGG Bridge Engineers, Inc. will fully cooperate with every appropriate authority in reviewing what happened and why.
Have any other bridges designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers ever collapsed?
This is an unprecedented event – no other bridge designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers has ever experienced such a collapse. FIGG-designed bridges have proven to be incredibly durable. For example, we have worked on more than 230 bridges throughout the United States and have designed nearly 35 miles of bridges in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico that have withstood multiple hurricanes.
What caused the collapse of the pedestrian bridge in Miami?
This pedestrian bridge collapse is truly tragic. The focus right now is on the first responders’ recovery operations. Multiple agencies have already begun an extensive review to determine what caused the collapse, and we will work closely with all appropriate authorities in this effort.
How secure are existing FIGG-designed bridges around the nation?
The collapse of the pedestrian bridge in Miami is an unprecedented event that occurred during construction, and all completed bridges – including those designed by FIGG or any other firm – are inspected every two years by the individual state Departments of Transportation.

Hey, must check. That was quick. Seems areff is very busy on weekends too.
All power to Quadrant’s quill, for the magazine is sorely needed today. Founded as an anti-communism forum, the job is not yet done.

Perhaps it’s the zeitgeist. Ross Cameron on Outsiders today talked of Solzhenitzyn and his question of when do you start to draw the line, to be responsible for saying no to the creeping ‘banality of evil’. This was followed by the Outsiders’ re-interview of Jordan Peterson, which was pretty stunning, as this Prof is on the ball re the creeping nature of communism in its active form today and the need to kybosh it at this stage rather than later. It’s when, not if, he argues. We will have to confront it before it overtakes us.

Pretty much the point of the review I wrote of ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, for this novel re-creates the banal advance of communist evil into every aspect of life in its totalitarian past. My review in its conclusion suggests that Peterson and the author of the novel are onto the same thing. It’s quite long, so I’m glad it got published.

Easy question. Can you guess what the WHO position is on gender?

Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men – such as norms, roles and relationships of and between groups of women and men. It varies from society to society and can be changed. While most people are born either male or female, they are taught appropriate norms and behaviours – including how they should interact with others of the same or opposite sex within households, communities and work places. When individuals or groups do not “fit” established gender norms they often face stigma, discriminatory practices or social exclusion – all of which adversely affect health. It is important to be sensitive to different identities that do not necessarily fit into binary male or female sex categories……

    http://www.who.int/gender-equity-rights/understanding/gender-definition/en/

But the WHO has no problem leading a global campaign to stigmatize, “leperize”, socially exclude, and rob those who smoke.

Remember, the WHO is an unelected, unaccountable organization working through greedy, narcissistic, useful-idiot politicians.

This is an unprecedented event – no other bridge designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers has ever experienced such a collapse.

    Technically true, I suppose:

NORFOLK, Va. – The pedestrian bridge that collapsed at Florida International University in Miami Thursday was designed by the same engineers that worked on a local bridge that collapsed during construction.

Figg Bridge Engineers submitted plans for a new, privately-funded South Norfolk Jordan Bridge that were approved on January 27, 2009.

Construction on the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge was put on hold after a truss used to build the bridge shifted, which sent a 10-foot, 90-ton piece of concreted crashing down to the railroad tracks below in June 2012. Four workers were injured in the incident.

Speaking of the Tasman Bridge, it must be one of the worst designs ever.

It was built in the full knowledge that large ships would pass through its vertical spans with only metres to spare on either side.

This in a river subject to tidal flows and currents.

These days the authorities have all traffic stopped while ships pass underneath.

Ironically – perhaps not the right word – those ships pass over the wreck of the Lake Illawarra, the freighter that smashed the bridge into two halves in 1975, and various cars which plunged off the bridge, unable to stop. The bodies of many of the dead were never recovered and their remains lie also entombed in the tons of concrete and the wrecks of the cars and the ship.

No-one was ever held liable for the design of the bridge.

Would any of our military Cats here care to comment on a. why children march on Anzac Day, and b. whether this is acceptable to the returned veterans?

From what I’ve seen it is because they are wearing medals of a relative; ie: on the right hand side of their chest.

Personally I think it’s not a good idea. It’s one of those things that will spread. Where does it stop

I’ve asked around about this and most think that it’s OK where the medals of a dead veteran (KIA, DOW or died since) are being worn by the children or grandchildren . The medals are then regarded as a prized family heirloom, and the memory of the deceased is continued with a lot of pride.

It’s a particular point of remembrance for a uniformed member. I have worn my late grandfather’s medals on my right hand side, in an ANZAC day march. My late Grandfather’s combat decorations drew the respect of other serving members, it was an honour to honour his memory in that way. They are now with the War Memorial, which is where my uncle wanted them to go when he died, and that’s fine.

BTW, the left loathes the entire idea of ANZAC Day, and thought it was dying with the WWI and WWII veterans. It did not, the families of the veterans got involved, and it has expanded since the 1980s. The first Dawn Service I went to at the AWM was in 1985, there were maybe 600 people present and it was held in the galleries inside the Memorial.

By 2010 that same AWM Dawn Service was attracting 10,000+ people. I am attending this year’s, and again I expect it to be enormous. Last year’s apparently was about 14,000-15,000.

  99. Marcus Classis

Oh, nearly forgot. The idea has also caught on in Russia. There, decendants of men killed in WWII and WWI wear the medals of their relatives/ ancestors and carry a large photograph of the man.

The “Immortal Regiment” is a patriotic initiative that commemorates WWII soldiers in marches held across Russia and other countries. Within the framework of the movement, people march with images of their family members, who had participated in World War II. For the first time, the rally took place in 2012, in Russia’s Tomsk and then has spread to other cities and countries across the world.

While I might not like the political side of it, I can have no problem at all with Russians marching on VE Day memorialising the family members who fought and died in that war. The Immortal Regiment marches are a little bit similar I guess to family members marching here with their relatives’s medals.

Civil engineering experts say NTSB investigators and forensic engineers will have their hands full with several tasks, including reviewing the drawings of the bridge and corresponding calculations, and looking at how much concrete was used to support the cables.

NTSB investigators said Friday night that it remained unclear what caused the bridge to suddenly collapse, and added that their onsite probe could last as long as a week — but their departure from the scene would only be the beginning of the investigation.

Chief NTSB investigator Robert Accetta said construction workers were working on the north end of the structure, tightening internal cables that were meant to strengthen the walkway’s diagonal members, when the incident occurred.

“This is a different design type of bridge,” said Accetta, who noted that investigators were not close to coming to a conclusion. “It’s not something we’ve encountered before and I’ll go on to say that it’s not uncommon in other bridge structures to put members under tension to strengthen them.”

Two steel rods per ‘diagonal member’ according to the drawing plans in above video – the blue end cap and several metres of exposed rod are visible at the start of said video.

For anyone interested, here’s some background on the influential antismoking nut case, Judy Muckeye.

    Asia’s One-Woman Anti-Tobacco Campaign Still Going Strong
“For most of the past 25 years, Hong Kong-based, British-born doctor Judith Mackay has been the tobacco control movement in Asia.
She has pushed for tougher laws and higher tobacco taxes, lobbied for bans on advertising, and advised and cajoled governments in Hong Kong, Laos, China, Vietnam and most other Asian countries.
She drafted Mongolia’s first post-Soviet anti-smoking law in her hotel room on the last night of her trip there, after spending most of the visit under suspicion of being an American spy.
Her success is based on her ability to convince the right person with the right power to make changes that will save lives. And she is happy to take advantage of non-democratic regimes.
“That is one of the reasons I was so active in the 1980s. Once you had democracies, you have white papers and green papers, you had public debates and forums and it went on forever,” the 65-year-old said from her Hong Kong home.
“I found I could jump over quite a few fences in one go,” added Mackay, who has been a senior policy adviser to the World Health Organization for more than 10 years.”

    http://www.medindia.net/news/asias-one-woman-anti-tobacco-campaign-still-going-strong-53807-1.htm

There we have it. Dealing with democratic countries can be such hard work. You have to deal with nonsense like freedom and personal autonomy. There’s all that useless paperwork required to justify your claims. And those endless public debates….. well! No. Judy would be happy to “take advantage of non-democratic regimes”. You need to deal with and con only one or, at most, maybe a handful of people. It can mostly be done over a six-course dinner; no paperwork; no public debates. Much….. much better. Smoking bans and a smoker persecution and extortionate tax program can be set in motion by lunch the next day. Then it’s off for a spot of tennis.

Anti-Smoking Leader Demands Prosecution of Tobacco Company Executives for “Crimes Against Humanity”

“Prof. Judith Mackay, the British, Hong Kong-based physician who has been described by the tobacco industry as “one of the three most dangerous people in the world,” has called for heads of the industry to be prosecuted for their “crimes against humanity.” Mackay, an international anti-tobacco advocate who has led a campaign against tobacco in Asia since 1984, appeared by video conference at the annual meeting, held in a Caesarea on Friday, of the Medical Society for the Prevention and Cessation of Smoking of the Israel Medical Association.”

White South African farmers: Foreign Minister Julie Bishop refuses to back Peter Dutton’s ‘special treatment’

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has refused to back Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton’s claims persecuted white South African farmers deserve “special treatment” when it comes to humanitarian visas, saying they must be “offered on merit”.

While, Ms Bishop said Australia does monitor the rate of violent crime in South Africa and acknowledged there had been a “dramatic increase” in recent years with over 19,000 murders recorded, persecuted South Africans were eligible for Australian humanitarian visas, but, these applications would be “considered on merit”.

Speaking on the ABC’s Insiders program on Sunday, the Foreign Minister conceded the South African Government had been offended by Mr Dutton’s remarks and rejected his suggestion white farmers were facing “horrific circumstances”.

But, Ms Bishop said the Australian government had raised concerns about recent land reforms the South African government had implemented, saying “we want to ensure those land reforms don’t lead to tensions or indeed violence,” Ms Bishop said.

She also said she wouldn’t generalise when it came to the issue of whether South Africans would make “better citizens than anyone else in this situation”.

“I’m not going to start generalising,” Ms Bishop said. “There are many South Africans in my own electorate of Curtin and they make a great contribution to life in Australia.”

“As do so many immigrants from all around the world,” Ms Bishop said. “They make an incredible contribution to the peace, stability and prosperity of our nation.”

The South African government has demanded a “full retraction” from Mr Dutton after he told a Sydney radio station last week that white South African farmers being attacked on their land deserved special consideration for humanitarian entry to “a civilised country” like Australia.

“They work hard, they integrate well into Australian society, they contribute to make us a better country and they’re the sorts of migrants that we want to bring into our country,” Mr Dutton told 2GB on Thursday.

The South African government wholly rejected the characterisation.

“The South African government is offended by the statements which have been attributed to the Australian Home Affairs Minister and a full retraction is expected.”

What a bitch. From the comments:

    Patrick W

Peter Dutton’s suggestion is compassionate, a worthy response to an obvious need. Ms Bishop’s response is a disgrace, in line with the toxic Greens. Had the South African farmers been Muslims, they would have been given the red carpet treatment.

With only one side completed and no tower it would be extremely fragile because the load on the deck is actually in reverse at that stage, turning it more into a truss bridge… but with only a single truss and the angles are unsuitable for any real weight, and the bottom of the deck would have gone into tension.

The truss member that failed appears to be the first one on the Northern side (the one with metres of post-tensioning bolt hanging out) being nearest the tower, it has the greatest horizontal span whereas its ‘mate’ is the most vertical, forming a triangle with the lower deck chord – it would have the greatest (vector) tension (and moment) and it looks like the concrete shattered under compression.
Makes sense when the NTSB is questioning if there was sufficient concrete in the truss members.

Peter Dutton should have reminded the South African “Government” how agriculture in Kenya suffered, once the white settlers there, left, fleeing Mau Mau, how agriculture in Zimbabwe suffered, once the white farmers there were kicked off their land, and asked the filthy , corrupt “government” what made them think South Africa would be any different?

A few typos and tense changes (some due to a mild edit here and there) in my review in Quadrant Online; minor things which can probably still be corrected or ignored. The ‘Oest’ for eg. should be the ‘West’. I think areff corrected my lack of capitalization of ‘west’ and pressed the appropriate qwerty position on the right (getting O) rather than the left (where W sits). Can’t blame him for that though. Thinking right better than thinking left. 🙂

Hairy now tells me I’ve lost a top position in favour of Keith Windschuttle, a much bigger hitter.

I looked briefly tonight at an aerial shot of the whole thing – my instinctive reaction is that something fundamental has failed. I see lots of lateral pieces and very few vertical pieces. We have a pedestrian bridge of similar design and dimension about a mile west of here giving access, across Smith St arterial, to Griffith University from its dormitory area.

  159. Some History

The WHO and the IOC showcase athletes as excellent specimens of the human form that should be role models for all. These “show pony” athletes devote their youth and early adult years running around in circles, or swimming up and down a pool, or catching/kicking/throwing a ball about. They strive 24 hours a day with a team of trainers, dietitians, and sports psychologists to improve over years by fractions of a second. They compete and win by 100th of a second, making them the “best” running around in circles, etc., until the next time. And they get to hang a piece of metal around their necks. If this is what some folk want to do, so be it. But to have shoved down our throats that this is “model” humanity is another matter. Some would rightly view this undertaking as the height of narcissism and vainglorious pursuit.

These “role models” also love bonking. It seems as though they’ve turned bonking into just another sport. At these showcase events like the Olympics, somewhere in between events and eating and sleeping, these “role models” manage to bonk their brains out, a bonk-fest if you will.

Commonwealth Games 2010: condoms block drains at athletes village

Following a decision to provide free condoms at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, it has become something of a tradition.
At the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, athletes quickly used up the 70,000 free condoms provided, forcing organisers to supply another 20,000, while at the 2004 Games in Athens, the provision was doubled to 130,000.
At both the Beijing Games in 2008, and the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, 100,000 condoms were provided for athletes.

From the mech eng’s video above, the mobile hydraulic jack location was moved from the original design (drawing shown) likely due to the roadway barrier, evident in the first video, and the cracking/tensioning was taking place in the vicinity of where the hydraulic jack should have originally been.
This is where pre/post tensioning debate lies – the rods should have been pretensioned for the jack lift (they may have been releasing tension from the original location reserved for the jack when the incident occurred).

I’m sober OWG. How about you?

I’ve had a couple of brandies and think I would be under 0.05

But I’ve been consuming off the shelf mild pain relief tablets for my ribs.

    Mostly they make me sleepy.

The country I’m in hardly lets you get panadol.

I have not been able to catch up over the last few days so don’t know if this news has been posted but it is concerning.

How many human sacrifices will be enough to satisfy the appetite of the voracious God of Diversity. I hope whatever other infrastructure constructed by the Diversity Divas is being checked for faults and flaws, oh dear would that be sexist?

Hot off the press. Your tax dollars at work:

Commonwealth Games: Condoms, four pools and XXXX bar inside the athletes village

SOME athletes may be having more fun than others come the Commonwealth Game, with bowls of condoms placed poolside at the athlete’s village ready for their arrival next weekend.

The condom bowls were on display during a media tour of the $550 million athletes village yesterday.
The village boasts four plush swimming pools (complete with hammocks, bean bags and deck chairs) for athletes to frolic in between competition.
With a XXXX bar and even a TAFE student-run beauty salon to have athletes looking their best, officials are well-prepared for village hook-ups….

Better inside the village because diversity cameras and multiculturalism videos will protect some of those white bred honky skanks.

I want the so called Australian Government to get rid of all EXCISE DUTIES on Fuel, Alcohol and Tobacco.

If they can’t then they are the enemy of all Australians.

  226. OneWorldGovernment

And I want to know how much wealth does former PM John Howard have these days?

  227. OneWorldGovernment

When is the so called Australian Government going to eliminate so called Not For Profit category?

  228. OneWorldGovernment

When is the so called Australian Government going to STOP money coming into Australian NGO’s that manipulate our elections and laws?
