“They still don’t understand Trump”

Newt Gingrich: Trump (and his success) continues to baffle our country’s elites. What’s going on?

It’s been nearly 14 months since President Trump took office, but the media and Washington establishment still don’t understand our nation’s 45th president. They continue to criticize, distort, discredit and ignore his actions and accomplishments – while making little to no effort to actually understand what he’s doing and the way he operates.

This has been the elites’ pattern since Donald Trump first announced his bid for the White House. It’s what prompted me last year to write my No. 1 New York Times bestselling book “Understanding Trump,” which was released in paperback this week.

When President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Paris Climate Agreement, the elites could not see how breaking with these bad agreements could possibly be good for Americans. After all, some of the Washington elites had helped draft these deals – which in the minds of the liberal media meant these deals must be good.

When President Trump imposed direct trade measures on some foreign products – including solar panels, steel, and aluminum – to protect U.S. industries that were being undercut, the elites reflexively questioned his political-trade-foreign relations acumen. Seemingly none of them stopped to consider that President Trump’s decades of success in international business may provide him with an informed opinion and worldview counter to their own.

As we have seen President Trump make changes to his Cabinet and personal staff, the elites in Washington and the national media have insisted that these decisions are a sign of dangerous instability in the White House. Never mind that the best business leaders and managers routinely make tough staffing decisions to improve their organizations’ long-run initiatives or mission.

It seems the elites simply refuse to think about the Trump presidency through any lens other than that of traditional Washington – despite the fact that President Trump has never been a part of (and represents a departure from) the traditional establishment. This confused, square peg-round hole analytical approach is made worse by the fact that the elites then try to use Washington jargon to define and attack the president.

In the minds of the elite, President Trump doesn’t fit the post-World War II international mold that regards the United States as the world’s only real superpower that can afford to prop up all its allies – and even some of its enemies. For that, the elites claim President Trump is an isolationist.

The president doesn’t fit the traditional Republican free-trader mold because he demands that Americans must benefit from trade agreements. Therefore, according to the elites, he must be a protectionist.

President Trump didn’t enter office with a team of politicos and policy wonks who had been with him through a decades-long political career, so to the elites insist the Trump administration is inexperienced.

Finally, the president is not afraid to take decisive action when he’s made up his mind about something, so the elites claim he is unstable.

However, many Americans hear these Washington words (isolationist, protectionist, inexperienced, unstable) and see no relationship to their president or his administration.

Many Americans – who for years watched factories close and American prosperity dwindle as a result of bad multinational agreements and unfair trade deals – regard President Trump’s decision to get out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Paris Climate Agreement as necessary and long overdue. To them, the president has been working to break away from deals that help other countries at the expense of U.S. success – just as any good business executive would.

Similarly, millions of Americans see the president taking actions to stop foreign countries that are cheating at trade as a sign that he is defending the interests of our country abroad. That’s also what good business leaders do.

When President Trump replaces one of his team members with someone more in-tune with his vision, most Americans see him acting as a typical, goal-oriented executive.

In “Understanding Trump,” I point out that our president defeated the media and Washington elite largely because they simply refused to understand him as a candidate. Further, they were profoundly wrong about the 2016 election because they couldn’t comprehend that the American people wanted something other than the traditional Washington elites’ idea of a president.

It seems the elites didn’t read my book – or they didn’t take its lessons to heart – because they haven’t changed a bit. They still don’t understand Trump.

It’s a condition called psychological projection. It’s a defense mechanism because President Trump is nothing like what their minds think he is. So they have to make up a bogey man to feel better about themselves. But that’s how the Left react when things don’t go their way.

From the moment he declared himself a candidate, I always considered Donald Trump to be the quintessential American businessman and a patriot. A refreshing change from the establishment… He wasn’t a political insider, but he walked in the same restaurants and social groups as they did…. He knew their minds. They had no real clue about him, and what they thought they knew about him. Was wrong.

I don’t think it will be long before many off them start walking to his beat….. In many ways the political elite are simple creatures. They like to be on the winning side…. and Trump is winning.

An incisive analysis by Gingrich. Trump is the best thing to happen to America in a long, long time. Hopefully he can reverse the decades of damage done by the self-serving political ‘elites’ – the ‘professional’ politicians and their public service lackies. The indications, so far, are very encouraging.

    Can’t, not don’t.

  5. Up The Workers!

If they were “Bridge” players, you would say they have all been “Trumped”.

They’re not Bridge players – only mere leftard presstitutes – but they’ve still been utterly Trumped!

    Go Trumpster!

  6. Tom

There’s no other DC insider with Gingrich’s sharp insights on Trump and his presidency who isn’t also trying to destroy him. Trump-haters like LQC, who lost his mind – and made a spectacle of himself – again yesterday, should be listening to Gingrich. But, of course, they won’t because they are feeding their bizarre primal needs by hating on someone they just can’t stand personally.

POTUS45 has a magical ability to unite leftists – and libertarians who imagine they’re not part of the left – in their irrational loathing of him. Trump-haters who are serious, paid policy analysts should stop fixating on what he says and how he says it and start focusing on his objectives and his results.

  7. POTUS45 has a magical ability to unite leftists

Not only that, but to drive Leftists to ever more irrational behaviour and attacks on Trump, which only helps to cement in the hearts and minds of Trump supporters (and even those in the middle) that Leftists are as insane as ever.

Awwww, John Brennan is not happy…

    Brennan barks, but the caravan…

    ‘Moral turpitude’! Ouch.

  10. Up The Workers!

    Tom,

I wonder whether LQC has ever considered the distinctly spooky possibility that Trump is merely the puppet of a grassy-knoll conspiracy of evil between the dastardly Cardinal George Pell and the dreaded Tony Abbott?

Food for what passes as leftist “thought” these days!

(Alternatively, maybe yesterday was a full moon and LQC has been off his meds again?)

  11. RAZOR

    AS is being revealed:
    1. The deep state have to have Trump put down to prevent their criminal exposure
    2. The Clintons have to ditto 1.
    3. The faux media have to put him down to stay in business -do not report the news – report any anti Trump thing you can find to keep the seaboard leftist readers on board.
4.The political left elites are – like the faux media in their death throes absolutly anything to maintain a support base = illegals so have to shut down Trump’s approach reduce such (particulary from Mexico)
    5. The snobbish Repub elite have a lot of stature to lose on a successfull Trump presidency – they work for him to fail. (May be hiding some criminality as well – re the dossier)
    6. The general Washington Bureacracy are primarily left wing by many years of deliberate selection (See American Betrayal). They would also be imbued with the mentality that only a political trained person can carry out the duties of President.
    7. The left wing social Justice groups are very indoctrinated in the U.S. They are self isolated from a national spirit. they seek total globilisation in ALL respects. There should be no national boundaries. they also hate Christianity with a deep anger. Trump represents the loss of what they were achieving under Obama. they deeply want him stopped and hate him like only a irreligious person could.

SO all in the U.S except his supporters see themselves as much to lose under Trump. I do thank God that he has taken up the challenge at what is a extremely decisive moment in the history of the World.

Don’t kid yourself, there are Trillions of $s at stake as Sundance would say.
American politicians are nothing but tools of globalist billionaires. Not a single Senator or Representative writes up legislation…EVER.
All legislation is written up by interest groups who then get their bought and paid for pollies to introduce it and K-Street lobbyists lobby to get it past.

That’s why there have been so many so called Re[ublicans opposing Trump. That’s why a couple of by-elections have gone against the GOP. The GOPe worked against their own party just to oppose Trump.

There aren’t 2 parties in the US, there is a Uniparty (an R or D after your name is irrelevant) with an odd sprinkling of independent Republicans elevated during the TEA Party movement.
The fight is between Wall Street and Main Street. Washington has sold out Main Street (especially since the criminal years of Bill ‘The Rapist’ Clinton). That’s why those trade agreements are so anti Main Street and Pro Wall Street.

Trump understands all this and is trying to swing the odds in favour of Main Street so that Joe Sixpack can start living his American Dream again.
K-Street will do anything and everything to oppose and undermine Trump. Paul Ryan, Turtle McConnell, Songbird McCain et al will undermine Trump at every turn. Democrats are not the problem. The MSM are not the problem. RINOs are the problem. There are $Trillions at stake.

Trump supporters probably figure they have nothing to lose. The establishment seems to actively destroying them for the establishment members’ personal gain. So put in an outsider (yes aware of potential irony there).

The worst thing about the Trump Derangement Syndrome is that it has filled the air with shit and made it hard to maintain the kind of helpful critical appraisal that is required to help Good Trumpie to move rapidly and decisively in the right direction with the minimum of distraction from Bad Trump ideas.

One of the cures the West needs is to abolish career o]politics and put all public servants on one year contracts ,including all judges , changes like that would make a dramatic difference, introduce uncertainty in their lives ,performance based salaries would also put thewind up them .

  18. Bruce of Newcastle

Rafe – That comment is also made in a good article by Julie Kelly:

Americans Deserve a Full Hearing on the Trump-Russia Hoax (16 Mar)

For nearly two years, the nation has been consumed by what is quite possibly the biggest scam—and scandal—in American political history. The Trump-Russia hoax has monopolized news coverage, dominated the attention of the nation’s top lawmakers, and led to a costly, freewheeling investigation that is destroying people’s reputations and livelihoods without any proof yet that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump were in cahoots before November 2016. Robert Mueller’s investigation has outraged and distracted an easily outraged and distractible president, prompted the resignations of key aides, and handcuffed the federal government’s top lawyer. He is now subpoenaing Trump’s business empire for documents related to Russia and “other topics,” the New York Times reports.

I suspect this is entirely by design to suck as much energy out of the Trump WH as possible whilst engineering a Dem majority in either the House or Senate so that his agenda can be stymied completely.

They are really playing for sheepstations. I do hope justice comes down on them like a US battleship falling from a mile up.

Bruce the elitist left have always been a scheming ,devious, lying ,untrustworthy pack of mongrels ,marx Ulyanov. Stalin,Trotsky. Hitler Mao,pol pot, Castro. Scargill ,Evatt, whitlam obama ,not a real human amongst them they are no different today. Pointing at unicorns is their favourite ploy ,avoiding elephants in rooms normal . You are right about comrade mueller obfuscating Trumps Real Acheivements with his lying media comrades ,surely mueller has a skeleton or two in his past ,dig it out and expose him as the fraud he obviously is ,maybe a nice term in a hard jail would change his ways no money certainly would ,let his fellow lawyers bleed him dry .

all problems that western nations have are because of big government.

i am from the government and here to help.

There’s a sucker born every minute.

changes will not come from the top.

    it is impossible.

all problems that western nations have are because of big government.

I’m all for small government, but consider the following.

If the US Federal Government was smaller, then Obama would have captured the lot during his 8 years.
It turns out 8 years wasn’t big enough because of the enormity of the US Government.
He captured the upper echelons of the DoJ, EPA, IRS, all the spy agencies not to mention much of the judiciary (look at the judges openly defying the law and effectively governing from the benches).

Obama needed another 4-8 years to also capture the upper-middle and middle management of all the alphabet agencies and the coup called “fundamental change” would have been complete.
Hillary was to continue Obama’s work. That’s why there was such a big effort by these alphabet agencies to stop Trump, failing that, obstruct Trump long enough to resume the coup task. Government was just too big to capture.

changes will not come from the top.

    it is impossible.

No change can come from the bottom until some at the top are willing to help.
The TEA party tried change from the bottom, but were thwarted by the DoJ, FBI and IRS. Trump is trying to make some changes at the top by cleaning out the Obama plants. Draining the swamp if you will.
Then he has the Globalists to contend with. Until all that is done, no one or no group from the bottom can make any change that’s meaningful.

We tried to make bottom up change in Australia by electing Abbott against the tide. He was ousted by the establishment (includes MSM and bureaucracy not just the pollies).
We can’t make bottom up change in Australia until someone at the top is willing to help.

  24. max

“We tried to make bottom up change in Australia by electing Abbott against the tide.”

demise of the west started with ww1.

Lang Hancock said in 1979: Our national anthem seems to be a tune called “The Government Oughta” — the government oughta feed me, the government oughta clothe me, the government oughta assist me, the government oughta lay down guidelines, the government oughta do my thinking for me. This idea of total dependence on the government has led to Australia’s undoing; it’s a disease that has spread through us and I believe we can only cure it ourselves. Governments can only get bigger and bigger, and the bigger they get the more they take away from big business, small business, everybody in the community.

  25. Trump is the People’s President

Bollocks. He is losing byelections with 20+ per cent swings against him. The people see through him already.
