Areff – Hairy, who briefs me with the news daily, tells me the article is on the top of the list in the online Weekend Oz today. Graham Lloyd the journalist. See you’ve gone to The Times and got it.

Ragu – “What have I done now?” Nothing sweetie pie, nothing at all. My bad. I just jumped at the word ‘Irishman’ and thought you were suggesting how Hairy might find comfort elsewhere given my general dreadfulness. But you didn’t mean him at all.

I compensated Hairy for some of my deficits today by driving most of the way back from Matsumae so that he could enjoy the view around the ‘horn’ of Hokkaido, the furthest point south where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan (at the Straits of Tsugaru) meet in a wild clash, as confluences do. High rolling surf beat in all around the point on the scenic road festooned with Tsunami warnings, and which leads around there and onto the fortress of stunningly picturesque Matsumae Castle. The ten thousand cherry blossom trees in the gardens and environs there were still blooming in various stages of completion. I took loads of pics, including a few of Japanese families and schoolchildren tending a small BBQ under the drift of petals on a clear Spring day.

Hairy going on about the Shinkansen that now goes undersea to Tokyo and down to Hakodate which they are bringing down to Matsumae soon – da longest undersea tunnel in da world (probably – nope he’s just checked it, second longest if ya don’t count da Metros, 3km longer than the channel tunnel), he enthuses. He also noticed, looking up admiringly at the special high speed tracks on a hillside, that there is an expressway we missed going down, and so we took that on our way back. It meant on the way back we could avoid the first part of the scenic route – da one around da chemical factory. This was an industrial facility covering several hectares, interestingly placed next to the bayside road but hardly scenic.

Anyway, back at the resort we braved their onsen baths. In Miyazaki on Kyushu we stayed at the Sheraton which had private onsen for couples, but here they have only general onsens strictly gender segregated. In you go, I said to Hairy at his little cloth hung doorway, both of us robed in Yukata gowns and trepidatious. It is always something of a shock to be back in onsen territory, where bathing although not mixed is mandated to be naked. Here they have indoor and outdoor pools, lit up in the gloaming, and very pleasant it is to lie outside in the chill night air completely unclad, every bit of you caressed by sillky hot water. Still sex segregated of course. I wondered what happens to trannies; it is perfectly apparent to all what equipment you have in these settings.

This isn’t true. Viticulturalists don’t have to be Jewish (even though they generally are, but the grape pickers don’t have to be). It’s like with kosher meat. You don’t have to be Jewish to raise the animals. The slaughtering process for kosher meat, however, has certain procedures that non-Jews cannot be a part of. Kosher wine requires the oenology to be Jewish, that’s true.

It derives from evangelicals who believe the second coming can only occur when the j*ws are living in Israel.

My understanding is that there is a tiny fringe sect of evangelical Christians who are simultaneously virulently anti-S3mitic and virulently [email protected] for that very reason.

The mainstream evangelicals, however, regard the matter through an Old Testament lens. They see Joodaism as the root of their faith and themselves as the branch. Same tree. They believe in God’s promise to [email protected] and that the J3ws are God’s chosen people. They may also believe some stuff about the second coming, but they are not even slightly antipathetic towards the J3wish people or [email protected]

There is a very strong bond between evangelical Christians and [email protected] Check out the Christians United For Israel group. It’s massive and Bibi Netanyahu frequently addresses CUFI conferences. He’s treated like a rock star.

Can recommend JAL for the flight from Oz to Japan. Extremely good service, cheerful and smiling staff with high staff/pax ratios. A change from some of the surly or aged ones on Qantas and Air Canada in our recent long haul experiences. Movie selection more limited though.

I did find two worth watching, both about women making good in life. “I, Tonya’ was a knockout movie; her husband was always knocking her around (haw haw). It is the unreliable true story of a redneck American girl who skated because she loved it (as I did with ballet), pushed along by her godawful mother. Ma is a bundle of resentment, cynicism, cigarette breath and hostility, very well played in ‘so-what?’ mode, anger unmanaged. Ma ends up as a receptionist in a bawdy house, but not before Tonya does the world’s first triple axel for a woman and goes on to the Olympics, stopping on the way to become involved in the bust-up of fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan’s knee, a job done by Tonya’s hubby’s incredibly incompetent wannabe criminal friend. How much did Tonya know about the plot to scare up Nancy a bit. Not to scar her up, pleads Tonya. Maybe scare her though? The proverbial hits the Olympics fan and her dream is shattered; she ends up a Boxing Queen ‘cos she’s used to the knocks. That’s before she marries, has kids and becomes a landscape designer. They make ’em tough, these landscape gals like our gardener lady, and certainly Calli, who is fixing the Middle East somewhere still, I think. See that movie, Cats, it has balls.

The other movie wasn’t about up from Struggle Street, because our heroine was a Grade A student from a middle class home, where daddy is the difficult parent in this case. Young woman is a champion Olympic standard skier, chasing her dream just like Tonya, but breaks her spine in a bad move and loses that dream. S’ok, because Harvard Law School calls, but first she’ll take a gap year and find herself. She finds herself a job as a low-rent croupier, but moves to higher things. She opens her own game, with style, at the Plaza, and builds a group of players whom she investigates not quite as much as she should, so she’s soon enough knee-deep in various Russian mafia doings and other stuff, she’s taking drugs to cope with the high life, and the FBI are coming calling ‘cos suddenly her game is not as ‘legal’ she thinks. She has her fall, and confronts daddy, who is a clinical psychologist and gives her a Jordan Peterson moment: he’s not the problem after all. It’s her. She teams up with a, you guessed it, black lawyer who exudes probity but she refuses all plea-bargaining and takes her medicine like a good girl. It cures her. Fin. Not a great movie, about a third too long and it gets tedious, but watchable although not a patch on Tonya’s.

Seems girls from both sides of the tracks can go bad. Who knew?

  38. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Oh, second movie is called ‘Molly’s Game’. Heroine calls herself Molly Bloom.

On the references to evangelicals and Israel, Paul talks about it in Romans 11.

If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.

You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

The Church has been “grafted in” to the good things God promised to Israel.

The BBC has a spasm on a regular basis about those awful right wing governments in Eastern Europe, like Hungary or Poland. This time, hosting a panel show in Prague, it had the Czech Republic in its sights. Winning an election convincingly is no defence against the accusations of awfulness – like controlling the media.
Now you’ll have to forgive me for thinking that controlling the media is a good idea when so much of it in the world is left leaning and bent on the tearing down of western democracies and fostering the gadarene rush towards unsustainable socialism while pleading for “sustainable” energy that is neither sustainable or effective.
But what is most striking about these repeated smear campaigns against eastern european governments at the moment is the comparative lack of similar criticsms of places like Turkey, where the Erdogang is doing awful things (long list, won’t do it here and now), or Iran, or any number of other places. It looks to me like as long as the regime/government is either left leaning or islamic it gets a free pass.
Or did I simply miss their panel shows this year blasting Turkey and Iran?

Yesterday’s BBC Hard Talk was another Israel-bashing session. It’s also noticeable that reports by correspondents who sometimes go to Venezuela do “bottom up” analysis. They stress the hardship faced by the ordinary people, but don’t do the “top down” approach that they should do, putting the government on the spot as they do with regimes/governments they really don’t like.

You’re right. I’m mostly based in the UK these days and see a lot of BBC (and the commercial networks news are as bad or worse – planet Earth to channel 4?)

BBC is seemingly hoping that viewers seeing Israel attacking Iranian positions in Syria won’t notice that Iran is there for no purpose other than supporting anti Israel positions and attacks.

” Language complexity is another tool used by the S&P analysts. They look at factors such as the average number of words used per sentence and the complexity of the word used (number of words with three or more syllables). The logic here is that companies have a duty to disclose negative news to the market but are tempted to use long-winded and complex explanations to try and temper the bad news.

Many market participants are aware that companies often have “favoured” analysts – often those with a positive outlook on the company’s prospects. The AI process can look at the time given to these favoured analysts over others on a call.

As noted above, companies often use longer and more complex answers when giving bad news. The AI driven process is thus able to also pick up on the length of answers compared to averages”

For our purposes, the important thing is that the Obama administration infiltrated the Trump campaign with a spy. That’s the important thing. Who it is, we will eventually learn, but we don’t need to know who it is to know what the FBI did. and when I say the FBI, I mean the Obama administration, they infiltrated the Trump campaign with a spy. Aand while they have that spy implanted, they were unmasking and leaking and obtaining FISA spying warrants and conducting criminal investigations of Trump advisers.

This is a big deal, it is a gigantic big deal.

Who the informant was will eventually be learned, as will some other details.

THEY say that how we treat our most vulnerable is a measure of who we are as a society.

If that still holds true, then you’ve got to despair for where we are today. Last week’s report by the Northern Territory Children’s Commissioner into the alleged brutal [email protected] of an indigenous toddler in Tennant Creek outlines a litany of failure by the very system that should have been protecting her. As hard as it to read the facts of her abuse, it should be compulsory reading for the hundreds of bureaucrats in departments of family and community services around the country. After all, she is the result of a system that preferences the colour of her skin over her right to live in safety, even if it is outside her family and her culture.

This little girl was [email protected] so severely that she was transferred to Adelaide and underwent surgery for her injuries. She needed a blood transfusion and tested positive for gonorrhoea. She was two and half years of age for god’s sake, and wore a nappy. A 24-year- old man has been charged with her assault.

Sadly, she is not a lone case; there’s been similar sexual assaults of preschool children this year, as well as last. And unless we ask ourselves the tough questions about how we’ve allowed this sort of depravity to take hold in indigenous communities, then there will be more little ones that suffer.

I am not so naive as to think indigenous homes alone suffer these crimes. But the utter failure of child protection services to discard cultural policies in order to save lives makes them a constant feature of dysfunctional indigenous communities.

How many reports must we have before we declare this issue a national emergency? It took Malcolm Turnbull a mere 12 hours after a Four Corners story into the Don Dale detention centre to establish a Royal Commission, but here? Nothing.

Canberra after all, signs most of the NT’s cheques and indigenous affairs is in the PM’s own department. Not even a joint press conference from the large number of indigenous MPs now sitting in our federal parliament either. They’re quick to raise their voices about Australia Day, and new constitutional rights, but what about the right of this toddler to her innocence?

Of course, no minister in the NT government has lost their job; no public servant has taken responsibility. If you’re as angry as I am about this cultural cop-out, please, don’t let the colour of her skin silence you too.

In July, he will travel to Britain to accept one of the highest honours in his field – his election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the world’s most prestigious and oldest continuously running scientific academy…

After completing a Sydney University arts degree and nabbing the University Medal in pure mathematics, his studies took him to Germany, England and Japan.

Who was the other bloke who had cancer? Haven’t seen him around lately, either. Although maybe he just feels awful from the chemo and doesn’t feel like commenting right now.

  164. nemkat

LOL seriously guys IT just pulled that out his butt (although it’s probably true)

Your old mate IT has done a number on you, Mem, er, i mean Oh come on.

    Memory Vault died.

He said a couple of months ago that he had to decide on whether to have cardiac surgery. No death or funeral notice that I can find.

Mike of Marion, started treatment for a brain tumour. He hasn’t been here for a couple of months.

No spoilers FYI. So I saw the latest superhero movie. It has avengers in the title. Not my choice but went with friends who chose. In my view it is the worst movie I have ever seen. Really long. There’s fights all the time, next to no story. Just crap from start to finish. Youve been warned.

    Yeah, nah.
Prentice only got the gig because of her husband, who represented Toowong in State Parliament in the 1980s.
Interestingly [or not], Charles Porter, grandfather of the present A/G, preceded Mr Prentice in Toowong.
    The takeaway?
Vagina don’t matter, it’s who you are related to.

Nothing about gender in this decision by the membership. This was much more about age. They simply saw Prentice as past it and wanted to insert someone who could make a significant contribution to future Coalition governments.

Prentice could have still won despite the age factor if:
    1. She kept a sttong connection to her local membership instead of treating them as an afterthought
    2. She wasn’t seen as a Turnbull loyalist only put in an assistant ministry due to her support of the PM and being a female. As a result she is seen as being past her peak and the membership gelt she should hand over.

  183. Oh come on

A useful reference in case someone says ‘there have been no mass shootings since 1996’.

Weird how those same people insist mass shootings were relatively common before 1996.

Look. The fact is that Port Arthur was an outlier, a massive one. We had never seen anything like it before and haven’t since. Where some nutcase went postal and murdered a whole bunch of strangers who simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Port Arthur was different from two criminal gangs going at each other with guns. Port Arthur was different from a bloody internecine murder-suicide.

And let’s not kid ourselves – a Port Arthur-style massacre could happen again. Someone determined enough could collect the arsenal required through legal or illegal means and do it again. We know that people who do this kind of thing don’t just wake up one morning and decide it’s a good day to shoot a bunch of people. They think about it for a long time, plan it for a long time. Getting the weapons needed would be a part of that planning.

Here’s Jordan Peterson shilling for the Drug Companies.

So you’re hoping nobody actually clicks through that link and watches what really’s in the video and finds out you’re talking cobblers?

Spoiler alert: in that video Dr. Peterson’s daughter says she went on a diet and was able to cut out her anti-depressants completely, then Jordan Petersen tried the same diet and cut his antidepressants in half.
Claiming how much better he felt by reducing use of drug companies’ products is a rather strange way of “shilling for drug companies”, don’t you think?

After he had nearly run the table I apologized to the blokes and dragged him outside and we bolted in his car.

There was a bloke who did that for about a week, IIRC at the Exhange Hotel in Kalgoorlie. Gun player, but he’d play by covering every pocket and then would clear the table – even if he missed one, his penalty shot would enable him to keep going. No one would play him because his aim was to drink free and hold the table. Management wouldn’t tell him to piss off so the pool table would basically sit for about three hours each night whilst this prick got a free beer and a game from strangers.
