    It’s happening!

No one in the Trump administration had the wits stop this circus from proceeding.

Those of us who supported Trump because we thought he couldn’t possibly have been worse than Hillary were oh so very wrong.

  2. billie

Trump will go into the history books as a man who gets things done

He’ll get the Nobel Peace prize and make Obama’s look trivial

Trump has made America great again, and reduced fear in the world.

  3. RobK

No one in the Trump administration had the wits stop this circus from proceeding.
So how should he have handled this, Peter? Sixty years and war is still on.

  4. Entropy

Imp would have done what obama, bush and Clinton would have done. Send some idiot like Carter across to extract promises of disarmanent in exchange for food and other goods. Then the NKs would do what they wanted with no consequence, including distributing nuclear technology with countries like Iran.
I doubt what Trump is doing will work either. The NKs probably still think he will be like past presidents.
The most likely is no deal. But you never know.
And all along, this is really about trade with China.

  5. Tom

Things have changed when the humourless, authoritarian Singaporeans let in a clown like this:

An Australian comedian known for impersonating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he was detained by Singapore’s authorities on Friday and questioned about his political views, before being allowed into the country.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) said Lee Howard Ho Wun [who calls himself Howard X] arrived at Changi Airport at about 3.30 a.m on June 8 and was interviewed about 45 minutes later. After completing the interview he was allowed entry into Singapore.

Howard X was in Singapore late last month, posing as Kim Jong Un against a backdrop of the city’s bay which features sites such as the Merlion and the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

He said he is planning similar stunts for the purpose of political satire in the coming days, this time in tow with Donald Trump impersonator Dennis Alan. He said he is not planning any protests.

In past decades, Lee would have been turned around and sent home the minute he got off the plane.

And you can watch it live on ABC24 for most of the day. Greg Jennet & Ros Childs present special coverage, with crosses to ABC correspondent Zoe Daniel…” Maybe Zoe’ children will be giving expert opinion. Tom Bollard was in a gay toilet somewhere and was unavailable for comment.

    Zoe’s latest.

Yeah I know said this would never happen and if it did it would be a failure. But now I think as the taxi driver suggests, it will come down to how sincere Mr Kim is about changing that for the sake of a normalised place in the world order.

Trump will never get any credit from me or my colleagues even if he commits to LGBTIQ bathrooms in every home and to introduce 100% renewable energy by the end of this year.

    So there!

Those of us who supported Trump

You were a Trump supporter? Or do you mean a subset (of which you were not member) of some broader group (of which you were)?

    True.

And all along, this is really about trade with China.

It’s a bit more than that. In North Korea the Kim family have set themselves up like deities and they can impose every detail of life upon the North Korean people, every bit of available information, total top down planning. As a consequence, North Koreans are undernourished, poorly educated, isolated and constantly afraid of punishment for some minor transgression.

You imagine the consequence if North Korea suddenly opens up and these people flood as refugees into China. Firstly the Chinese don’t want them, and once those people get out from under the crushing dictatorship some significant fraction of them will want revenge. Even South Korea probably would have difficulty coping with rapid unification.

  13. struth

1 amp eter is a very dim bulb.

I believe he may be quite young.
That’s no excuse for unearned arrogance though.

  14. Struth, it’s called the arrogance of youth for a reason and it will be with us forever. It’s part of the human condition and is why we call up young men – they are invincible and bullet proof.

Slightly OT – but Congress is debating extending the draft, or at least the requirement to register, to women as women are now allowed in all combat arms. – I believe this is called an own goal.

I don’t know what’s sadder – progressives who are screaming at the sky in inarticulate frustration because they know so little about politics that they don’t realize they actually have a left wing president and they should be celebrating OR conservatives who are laughing at them, oblivious to the irony of it all because they know so little about politics that they don’t realize they
unintentionally helped elect a left wing president.

Well, yes. But Trump seems more concerned with Americans than North Korean people. At the end of the day, what does North Korea have to offer in any deal? Only the promise of stop making threats. What is the deal on the table that is actually worth doing?

  21. Entropy

And what can America offer Kim? Really? What can it offer him? A place in history as the one who brought his people out from the cold? That won’t end well for him. It never does.

I don’t understand why this theatre is happening at all.

…what we have is one helluva big government left wing administration and conservative government in America right now.

Honestly do capitalists look at things like his appointment of a skeptic as head of EPA and similar trivialities as offsetting anything in that list?

  23. struth

Struth, it’s called the arrogance of youth for a reason and it will be with us forever. It’s part of the human condition and is why we call up young men – they are invincible and bullet proof.

Invisibility yes, but we are talking here about an arrogance regarding intelligence.
When we were younger we may have thought we were invincible, but we never thought we were smarter than the adults around us.
Iampeter is showing all the characteristics of being impressed with himself intellectually while we all can see he is confusing the basics, just as you would expect youth to be, with this subject.
There is very good reason for not having young pollies, as evidence with the recent Trump little Canadian boys stoush.

Conservative “intellectuals” have found themselves Chavez-like strong men in Trump and Bannon who are just going to “get things done.” This is more likely to end in disaster than success.

  25. Fleeced

Those of us who supported Trump because we thought he couldn’t possibly have been worse than Hillary were oh so very wrong.

Oh, hi Alan. So, you say you’re a Trump supporter? Oh, do go on…

The wins keep coming, but the detractors will never admit it. They’ll always reframe everything.

The best example was the MS-13 example. “Trump is calling immigrants nimals”, they cried. When it was clear he was talking about MS-13, they changed their argument, “Nobody is animals!” They would never have defended MS-13’s “dignity” prior to that, but it was either that or admit they were wrong on Trump. That they couldn’t even do it on something so trivial – and instead would rather embrace the likes of MS-13 – tells you all you need to know.

So, no matter what happens in NK, the TDSers, the never-Trumpers and the Hi-Alanists will find a reason to declare it a failure. Or, if the result is such that they can’t credibly do that, then declare that Trump deserves no credit.

    Sad.

ABC Radio has interviewed North Korea experts on high rotation all morning.

The consensus position is that the Summit is a disaster: Kim has won; Trump is about to give away Japan and South Korea; China is about to emerge stronger and more assertive; and Trump and Kim are likely to spark a nuclear war, because Trump can’t be trusted and is humiliated.
Just ask Iran. And Justin Trudeau.

Zoe Daniel has gone to Singapore to report that although ‘Doubts remain over whether Trump can pull off NK denuclearisation goal‘ and “America has a credibility problem“, if there is any success it will all be down to Mike Pompeo.

Kim is now free to do what he wants to do, join the global leadership group.
Lessons were learned when the two Germany’s were united. West Germany wasn’t ready for the flood.
The North Koreans are like someone who might have woken up from a 60 year coma. Rushing the opening up of the North will have tragic results.
Once Trump is personally convinced Phat Boy is genuine in his wishes to join the global community, the difficult work will be managing a smooth transition.

Greg Sheridan continues to have no clue on Trump but labels the meeting as the ‘showbiz summit.’

There is some chance — not much — that North Korea will get rid of all of its nuclear weapons. It might say it will, but in reality I think I have a better chance of winning the US Ladies Professional Golf Championship than Pyongyang has of getting rid of its nukes.

    and

The big danger is that Trump makes a deal that involves a real concession from the US and in return gets a commitment to progressive denuclearisation from North Korea, which ends up being a chimera.

Despite the evidence showing that Trump’s actions have been overwhelmingly conservative, Sheridan still gets bogged down in the rhetoric of Trump and is reticent to praise trump for any success. Probably because he said this before the election.

    Can Trump do it?

I don’t think so, and I hope not, because American democracy needs Trump to be defeated.

Wow, quite a few cynics on here. Maybe everyone would like Pr. Trump to be like other leaders and do nothing with the savage North Korean threats of nuclear attacks. At least he called out the leader and he eventually backed off, plus we know they had a major disaster at their testing ground, I hope the face to face meeting goes well, I think Trump has already shown he will not back down or walk away without having a go. The mess with the G7 was principally Trump against the loony leftists who have not exactly been doing their bit financially and because they are chronically peeved with him because he left the absurd Paris Accord. Good on him, the mind bending waste of money to fight mythical climate change will go down as the worst con of this millennium. Weather is cyclic, always has been, always will be. Anyone who has taken the time and effort to study all aspects of climate for the last two thousand years would see very clear cycles. It may also be help for some critics to truthfully look at what Trump has done at home with jobs, tax, the economy etc in the light of what he inherited. One last thing, when he says he will do something, he keeps his word, quite obviously a businessman, not a politician.

It is pointless to reward Kim for promises of good behaviour, so maybe better that he knows, and his Generals know, he and they will be punished for bad behaviour.

    The Editor

On our ABC’s “Insiders” (10/6), Annabel Crabb opined that President Trump’s attention span was “about a minute”.

In the early part of ABC News24’s live coverage of the Kim-Trump meeting (12/6), one of the commentary team referred to the two leaders as “a tin-pot dictator and a real estate agent”.

Such blatant disrespect of the US leader by our taxer-funded broadcaster is simply unacceptable.

The ABC assumes American voters got it wrong and they’d be better off with Hillary. That view just isn’t reflected by reality.

  100. Stimpy, Trump has been rushing all the way through. Rushin’ here, rushin’ there, everywhere you look with the Trump administration there is rushins.

Yes, because the signing of formal peace treay between the belligerents, the removal, finally, of the DMZ, the withdrawal of armed forces from the forward areas just behind the DMZ, etc. is of little consequence.

  111. Confused old Misfit and Makka linked to this Dennis Rodman interview already but I’m going to link to it again. It’s very informative.

Basically, Phat Boy Kim tried to reach out to the US through Rodman 5 years ago, but Obama wouldn’t even bother speaking to Rodman. He was dismissed and received death threats.
Trump on the other hand did listen to Rodman and realised there was an opportunity here. He took it.

  114. Okay, just saw the signing ceremony. Surely if it included a formal declaration of peace as Tom said then Trump would have mentioned that in his remarks. My guess is that it’s not in there. We shall see in an hour or two at the latest, I suppose.

There is a formal declaration of your idiocy, Monst. You don’t seem at all happy about this meet up. Can you explain why, in a non threatening angry lesbian style?

  116. Trump has a long history by now of signing ceremonies that signify precisely rock all. He does it on a weekly basis in the White House even if there’s nothing of substance to sign, he just likes the attention.

Watched it all on Fox Newsfeed. This has all the appearances of a previously well-prepared ground, with a document ready and waiting and set to go – maybe needing a few tweaks, or maybe not even that.

It was all done with an eye on ceremonial effect. But that is how things change. Now to the business of unpacking the content of the arrangement and the process it will follow. Kim has been invited to the White House for further discussions. Both men were expressing a rock solid commitment. Kim had all the appearance of a man who was following a script he’d already decided on.

Trump is a leftist. He ran as a leftist anti-immigrant and anti-trade, nationalist. His administration is currently running things as would’ve been expected from a third Obama term. Those who support him for his policies are also therefore leftists. Leftists posting “grrrr leftists” post at the cat are pretty lol.

To be right wing is to stand for individual rights, rights protecting government and capitalism. Neither Trump nor the overwhelming majority of the conservative movement are in any way right wing.

And the only unity that will be achieved in NK by granting prestige and appeasing their dictator is that of unitinig the peninsula under NK dictatorship.

Let me be really clear: this meeting occuring is an unparalled foreign policy blunder.

On our ABC’s “Insiders” (10/6), Annabel Crabb opined that President Trump’s attention span was “about a minute”.

Trump just said he had been awake 25 hours, and here he is at the press conference totally on top of it all. Ms Crabb is a dipstick.

The Donald might not have to threaten too much to keep Kim honest. The poor starving North Koreans might, after sensing a tiny sniff of a better life, be more than willing to do that for him. I doubt that a peasants’ revolt would end well for Mr Kim.

I’ll happily join Calli with the pom poms. Even if this is only the start of years of baby steps it IS a start and therefore historic.

Won’t bother Trump not getting Nobel, he’d be disappointed in humanity if he was awarded one. He wants the world to be a better place, he has little regard for the kind of Nobel committee that gave Obama a Peace prize.

  198. Iampeter

JC, I am here for the Cat’s slowly dawning realisation that Trump is full of shyte on every single issue.

This won’t happen. Those who support Trump here do so completely uncritically and without a single idea of their own. The strong man persona of Trump is what appeals to their mindlessness as they need a leader to do all the thinking for them.
These people will become socialists if Trump were to say socialism is the way to go. They don’t care. They’ll also still pretend they are fighting “the left” as they do so.

It’s better than your only talking point, which is Shut Up Trump Is God.

There is very little to go on here, it’s all very fragile and ephemeral. One little public slight by Kim once Trump has flown out, or vice versa, and it will be ICBMs at ten paces again.

Kim got what he wanted, which was being treated as an equal. Trump didn’t even get a handful of beans.

On closer study the Norks position has changed since they made nuclear threats , the destruction of their nuclear facility in the accidental explosion , pulling down the mountain ,would have killed their nuclear technicians and many generals and officials observing the trials . This would mean starting from scratch again and they do not have the people or resources to do that . This leaves Kim in an exposed dangerous position , he and the other self preservers in the regime have decided to look statesmanlike and begin dialogue with the US . The question is would the people let them go through the whole thing again without rising and slaughtering the entire aparat? Like all aparatchiks self preservation comes first . That is a possible explanation for the reversal ,and if I know that. The US would know it too.

  210. Iampeter

The text of the signed statement is just hopeless. It basically guarantess NK dictatorship free reign to continue to enslave, torture and murder its people and proceed to rebuild their nucrlear missile program with no hassles from the US while it does so at which point the entire process will begin anew. What a deal!

Also every lunatic regime on the planet is watching this and now knows that if they want to be left in peace and even have summits with the US president no less they should start their own nuclear programs and behave crazy.

What an epic fail this is.

Didn’t they just agree to give up their nukes in exchange for an end to the sanctions that crippled them among other things.

Sounds like a plan. Develop nukes, get sent to the poorhouse by the US and others and then come begging for an end to the sanctions in exchange for the curtailment of the nuclear program and a promise not to get bombed into the stone age.

    Next step, profit!

    That is genius right there.

Full text of the U.S.-North Korea agreement signed by Trump, Kim

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) held first historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive in-depth and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting an robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of new US-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:

    1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity

    2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula

    3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula

    4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Having acknowledged that the US-DPRK summit — the first in history — was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulation in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit.

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new US-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.
