    national welfare fund

Oh is that MV’s pot of gold that was supposedly socked away after WW2 which has been hidden in Treasury’s accounts over the decades because the fund is now so colossal that it scares politicians?

    Yeah that’s a complete crock.

I mean, seriously. It doesn’t even pass the basic sniff test. Which politician, when discovering a hitherto unaccounted-for mountain of revenue, would be scared??

    It’s a myth from the 1980s.

Yes Menzies tried to introduce a universal pension in 1938 but it never got up.

It was considered again during the war and rejected again because it was too socialist.

The short-lived underfunded welfare fund welfare fund was not called the National Old Age Pension fund for the very good reason that it was not a national Old Age pension fund.

During the war many women found themselves to be widows with small children and after the shameful treatment of demobilised servicemen after world war one the government was concerned that people returning from armed services or war work in factories would not be left starving on the streets, hence proper unemployment benefits.

It was never primarily about age pensioners who had been looked after, more or less since before Federation.
The only age pension schemes Australia has had have always been subject to income and assets tests (except briefly under Whitlam for over 70s)

So employ some logic and ask yourself how there could be a universal pension scheme that excluded those that paid the most tax?

Like I said go find some primary sources the senate committee papers and contemporaneous newspaper accounts, from when newspapers actually reported the facts.

Don’t you love the left? Such an agreeable bunch. How could anyone possibly assume they would use their power or violence to oppress their opposition.

Does anyone know what DL thinks about alarmism, renewables and muslims?

I see his official policy on energy is predicated on this:

•That atmospheric carbon dioxide is increasing but considers the consequences of this, whether it is due to human influence and if anything can or should be done about it, as too uncertain to warrant government action.

    On muslims:

The Liberal Democratic Party believes the free movement of people, within and between countries, generally contributes to greater prosperity.

That’s a pity. DL is back behind Pauline. Depending on her attitude towards gun ownership and self defence.

  10. Roger

Yes Menzies tried to introduce a universal pension in 1938 but it never got up.

Menzies was arguably a ‘Red Tory’ (i.e. a paternalistic, communitarian minded, small c conservative).

In his historical context, that was not the worst of sins (indeed, it has a noble pedigree, including Hooker, Anthony Ashley-Cooper & Disraeli).

MICHAEL MCLAREN DR PAUL STOKES LOUISE MCBRIDE THALIDOMIDE WILLIAM MCBRIDE

The family of an Australian doctor renowned for discovering the link between birth defects and thalidomide are being forced to defend his name just days after his death.

In 1961, obstetrician Dr William McBride discovered three of his patients had given birth to babies with severe defects including stunted limbs.

He began to investigate and found the drug thalidomide, prescribed to pregnant women to combat nausea, was to blame.

But some have renewed a push to cast doubt on his discovery, labelling Dr McBride as a “flawed character” who took credit for a discovery a nurse was responsible for.

The renowned obstetrician’s daughter Louise McBride tells Michael McLaren she can’t understand why Doctor Norman Swan and the ABC are discrediting her father’s name.

“This case went all the way to the House of Lords in 1962. If there was any truth in what Norman Swan had said it would have been in evidence before the House of Lords.

“It’s just the ABC trying to justify, or Norman Swan trying to justify, a position they took which is about my father to completely discredit and destroy his legacy.”

But Louise isn’t the only one defending her father. Dr Paul Stokes is joining the cause too, saying he’s “astounded” by the allegations.

“He was a supreme optimist. I remember one day he said to me, ‘Paul, I’ve done nothing wrong so I don’t need any support.’”

Here’s the thing. Bill Clinton was known to travel to Lolita Island with Richard Epstein on Epstein’s private jet. It’s known that Epstein was using that island to have sex with young women and in some cases young girls. Epstein used to have parties there with his friends to have sex with these girls and women. Clinton traveled down there 17 times we know of.

And then they all chowed down on a hut full of pizza* (laden with pineapple) and lived happily ever after.

Menzies had entirely backed away from the idea by the early fifties.

In other news turdball is a complete bastard:

Malcolm Turnbull and Julie Bishop have smacked down Tony Abbott’s latest sortie to scuttle the national energy guarantee, with Turnbull noting that it is time to move past “ideology and partisanship and slogans”.

Asked about Abbott’s call on Tuesday night for Australia to quit the Paris climate deal as a precursor to dumping the Neg, the prime minister told reporters the government’s changes to energy policy were already having a positive price effect.

Turnbull also emphasised the Neg enjoyed “almost universal support across the country” from stakeholders who had once campaigned against a carbon price.

“I cannot think of an energy policy that has had broader support from the minerals industry, from the manufacturers, from unions, in fact, from the National Farmers’ Federation,” he said Wednesday. “The reason it has that support is because it will put downward pressure on energy prices.”

In a clear stab at Abbott, who campaigned to “axe Labor’s carbon tax” ahead of winning the 2013 election, Turnbull said “ideology and partisanship and slogans” had been “a poor guide to energy policy”.

“Engineering and economics are our guides,” he said.

Yesterday morning after hearing the ABC bleating about their exclusion from Nauru I sent this letter to the West Australian. The editor of letters to the editor rang me shortly after I hit the send button seeking verification etc. I told him where to look and he assured me my letter would run today. It did!
What I found interesting though in today’s paper was that my reference to the goings on in Nauru was the only mention in the paper on the subject. What’s the bet he claimed an exclusive amongst his colleagues at work today.

In what was a shock for employees of the taxpayer funded broadcaster the government of Nauru has announced that it will not issue work visa’s for ABC staff members wanting to attend a forthcoming conference on the island.
It would seem the ABC was totally unaware that its reporting about matters surrounding asylum seekers has seen it cross the line from journalism to activisim.
The ABC was also once the preeminent broadcaster of choice for leaders debates prior to federal elections. Their partisan handling of these debates resulted in the leaders at the last election deciding to choose a different broadcaster to do the job.
When such decisions are made the ABC tends to shout out how hardly they have been done by rather than reflect on why these decisions were made in the first place.
The lack of self awareness at the ABC seems to go from the very top to all the way down.

Magistrate Robert Stone was overly swayed in his decision in the Archbishop Wilson case by the need to publicly signal outrage at the Catholic church’s mere existence.

In that decision he opined that the accused showed no sign of remorse or contrition. Bullshit. The Archbishop is in the early stages of dementia. Why no mention of that as an explanation for his demeanour while under questioning in court ?

In effect, the magistrate accused the Archbishop of lying under oath when he (the Archbish) averred he had no recollection of the conversation in which he was told of the abusive priest. Again, is that so surprising, given the Archbishop’s mental impairment ?

The magistrate had obviously gone into this hearing with his mind made up. He should have excused himself.

‘It’s a betrayal of survivors everywhere’: Children’s advocate furious at home detention for Archbishop

MARK LEVY BRAVEHEARTS HETTY JOHNSTON PHILIP WILSON

An advocate for victims of child abuse believes home detention for an Archbishop who protected a paedophile is ‘a betrayal of survivors everywhere’.

Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson has been sentenced to just six months jail, all of which is expected to be served in home detention, for concealing the repeated sexual abuse of two altar boys in the 1970s.

The sentence has received widespread condemnation, with victims saying, “We get life, he gets home detention. It’s disgusting.” outside of court.

Bravehearts Founder Hetty Johnston tells Mark Levy it’s a missed opportunity to stop future cases of people not reporting abuse.

“It’s not good enough. I mean it’s fabulous that he’s been charged, fabulous that he’s been convicted and then they let the team down by not putting him in jail.

“The message has to be strong, don’t do it. Not just if you’re a priest, anybody.

“Do not conceal this crime because if you do, you will go to jail.

“Unless we get that message across then this is sort of like a half win and it’s a betrayal of survivors everywhere.”

    Image: AAP/Darren Pateman

Mark asks if the attention this case has received will lead to more charges against those who covered up sex abuse in institutions?

“I think so, I hope so, we have to!

“We need this to be widespread, we need states and territories across the country to make sure they follow the lead here and they continue along the path because we have to change this.

“Not as retribution but to put a line in the sand and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Click PLAY below for the full interview

The interview prompted NSW Police Minister Troy Grant to phone the program.

He tells Mark Levy he’s “absolutely appalled at this sentence”.

“This is no deterrent as a sentence, it’s appalling. The children deserve better, the victims deserve better and the community do.

“They have to be sentenced according to community standards now, not at the time of the offence.

“It also says, very importantly… the court must have regard for the trauma of sexual abuse of children as understood at the time of sentencing.

“That hasn’t been done in this case and that’s why everybody’s so disgusted.”

I noted yesterday that the usual child abuse hobbyists and carnies were “shocked” and “saddened” (yawn) that the old man wasn’t sentenced to a custodial term in solitary with hard labour. The same people – the exact same people – routinely denounce “the far right” when its spokesmen periodically insist on tough sentences and prison terms for men who have actually committed r-apes and violence. (Unlike Wilson, who has never hurt a fly).

Speaking of violence, in this week of theatrical moral panic about Wespecting Women … one of Cardinal Pell’s chief accusers was an ex-con turd who was jailed for bashing a woman (inter alia). Good enough for the Victorian judiciary.

Bones found by construction worker at North Bondi unit block
By police reporter Mark Reddie [Their ABC]
    Updated about 4 hours ago

Police are investigating whether bones found at a block of units at North Bondi this morning belong to a human.

A construction worker was clearing out rubbish from a cavity at the back of a garage when he made the discovery.

The 23-year-old alerted his colleagues, who were working inside one of the units, before calling triple zero.

Forensic police taped off the entrances to the cavity before collecting bags of evidence from underneath the building’s stairwell.

The construction worker, who did not want to be named, told the ABC that the bones looked like a hand or a foot.

“I was clearing out rubbish and then came across this hand or foot — it was hard to know what it was, but it looked like it was from a human,” he said.

“It was really shocking — I’ve never seen anything like that before. It made me feel sick.”

The bones were sent away for forensic examination, but police are treating the discovery as suspicious.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

  116. LNP insider

LNP Senate Preselection is this Friday and tbe state convention this weekend. Women’s conference is tomorrow. As can be expected there are plenty of shenanigans going on as all the luminaries descend on Brisbane.

Firstly you may have seen the Courier Mail article today that suggested Paul Scarr and Ian MacDonald were the main contenders for spot 1, while it was Barry O’Sullivan vs Susan Mcdonald for 2 and Teresa Harding was the front runner for 3 with Brad Carswell a dark horse

The Courier obviously had someone leak with an agenda, but I can tell you there is no clear cut favourite for any spot. People can nominate for any od all the 6 spots. For ecample Emerson is only going for 1, Ian Macdonald all 6.

For spot one I believe Scarr is in front while Ian MacDonald retains a core support base of northern delegates, though some have split. The final three will be these two and one of Rennick or Harding. I expect the survivor of those two to leapfrog Macca into the final two. Scott Emerson is not a real contender. He simply hasn’t got the numbers with many sceptical of him because of the state election

O’Sullivan has been in front for the second spot, but Susan Mcdonald has caught up. There is some desire for renewal. I don’t think its enough, but Barry certainly seems a bit scared. He has ramped up campaigning this week after an understated start to campaigning.

The Courier has got spot three completely wrong. Whoever misses top spot from Scarr Harding and Rennick will be two top contenders, but Theresa Craig has a very strong supporter base (Craig only nominated for spot 3). My guess is she hurts Hardings base the most and may be the favourite. Alot depends on who wins one. Say Scarr does then Craig gets up. If Harding wins 1 then I expect Scarr or Rennick to win the third spot.

Carswell is very unlikely to win 3. I think he ends up with spot 6.

Onto other matters. There are lots of challengers to policy committee chairs. These positions get spots on state council and thus senate preselections. The challenges are moderates vs conservatives. The main one is standing committee chair between Andrew Wines (moderate) and Dan Ryan (conservative candidate)

Urban vice president is also contested. Hutchison a moderate challenged by Wayne Black.

  117. Makka

If the takeaway message is that DL had an almighty blue with SHY then he’s done well.

In dis-interring the remains of our early ancestors, DPL’s arrogant message to the public is this: Our ancestors’ burial grounds won’t be respected because the money to be generated from the exclusive casino operation is more important than our ancestral heritage. Talk about arrogance and contempt for our people and our ancestors! These public officials apparently believe that they can openly commit such sacrilegious acts with impunity and get away with it. Do our public officials really think that the people of the CNMI are that stupid or are so blind so as to not understand the shenanigans that these officials are doing?”

GREENS senator Sarah Hanson-Young has given David Leyonhjelm seven days to apologise and pay her compensation before commencing litigation over comments that she claims implied she “was a hypocrite” for “hating men” while at the same time acting as a “slut, shagging men indiscriminately”.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Ms Hanson-Young last night sent the Liberal Democrats senator a concerns notice outlining how he has allegedly defamed her, in comments which she said have caused her “substantial hurt, distress and embarrassment”.

She has accused him of “malicious conduct” in continuing to reiterate the comments, saying it his “for your own self-seeking publicity and self-aggrandisement”.

P, I don’t like the idea of euthanasia either. I think it’s a cop out. However, I think adults are… adults.. and should be responsible for their own decisions even to the extent where they want their lives snuffed out. But libertarianism also means I don’t want the state to be putting stop go signs on our lives in every fucking thing we do.

I can’t agree with everything the LDP supports, but then they aren’t perfect like anyone else.

I would have seriously considered Bernardi’s party, but I just can’t forget the way he stole the seat from the libs. It was underhanded and very dirty politics. So it’s LDP for me in the Senate, which is really where all the power resides. What Perth suburb do you live in?

I have 2 children. My son is nearly 39 and my Daughter is nearly 37.

You may, or may not, have seen the conversation that I had with Mitch M. last night.

Based on the family history of my dead Wifes side my Son could contract cancer at any time.

It is my earnest hope that my mungrle bush genetics have saved him from that.

    I sleep 2 to 3 hours.

Then I wake and read books.

Obviously you know nothing of PTSD which is merely a heightened sense of protection.

Who else in parliament would tell a noxious harridan like SHY to fuck off when she’s in full flight? And double down after the event, instead of backing down? DL’s stocks have risen massively in my books. We need more people in parliament willing to stare down the finger-waggers.

DL killed it. Well done, Senator!

  151. Struth –
Apologies mate. Last night I promised to get back to you re our difference of opinion with regards to your future voting options. Regrettably I got caught up in other matters today (getting cleared to drive again). Then tonight I had the latest episodes of Salvation and Elementary to watch. Now I’m too knackered to debate anything.

Tomorrow I have rehab again until mid afternoon. We can cross swords again after that.
    I look forward to it.

I certainly don’t want someone “snuffing out” my life. But I do want the means legally available to do it myself, when and if I deem the time has come. My father had dementia, and my mother Alzheimer’s. I do not wish to inflict on my kids what my wife and I went through.

Bernardi had sufficient justification to quit the Libs.

He listed the decision to switch from Tony Abbott to Mr Turnbull, which perpetuated the revolving door of leaders in Australian politics, and a range of policy decisions, such as the decision late last year to examine a form of carbon pricing – a decision rapidly reversed – as among his reasons to quit.

The 2016 election campaign was also a factor.

“After the last election, I said there was a problem. We need to fix it. When the pollster says the base doesn’t matter, when the election campaign is lacklustre and we hang on by one seat and it is trumpeted as a great victory and no one is investigating it, we have got a problem,” he said, adding no one had been held to account for it.

This from the SMH. Of course forms of carbon pricing have been implemented.

You can, anytime and it’s not difficult. There’s no real law to stop you as laws against suicide are either balck letter or removed from the books. No one is going to prosecute you if you tried and failed, so to all intents it’s decriminalized.

GREENS senator Sarah Hanson-Young has given David Leyonhjelm seven days to apologise and pay her compensation before commencing litigation over comments that she claims implied she “was a hypocrite” for “hating men” while at the same time acting as a “slut, shagging men indiscriminately”.

    FB has called men

    pigs and morons

and in the debate said by her own admission:

putting tasers on the street isn’t going to protect women from men

The most entertaining part of DL’s interview with the head tiltee abc ponce was their argument about whether men meant all men or some men as in all men are rapists. Man means singular and men means plural which can be qualified by some, lots of, nearly all. If DL sticks to his guns, and I will be ringing his office tomorrow with some suggestions about legal representation, this will be very interesting.

In respect of voting I still place DL 3rd after Pauline, especially if Roberts gets back in, a great coal man and sceptic, and AC. In the lower house my general advice is go for the independents if they present as sane.

My post above, plus two glasses of good white, started me thinking of many things, but in particular of growing older. It reminded me of this:

“Don’t you know that love isn’t just going to bed? Love isn’t an act, it’s a whole life. It’s staying with her now because she needs you; it’s knowing you and she will still care about each other when sex and daydreams, fights and futures — when all that’s on the shelf and done with. Love — why, I’ll tell you what love is: it’s you at seventy-five and her at seventy-one, each of you listening for the other’s step in the next room, each afraid that a sudden silence, a sudden cry, could mean a lifetime’s talk is over.”

    Pure coincidence.

Sit down and pay attention you ridiculous fantasist and sockpuppet.

I’ve written the following in plain language that even a dullard such as Septimus could follow:

Hansen-Young made a slur about ALL men after she and 46 other morons voted against women having the right to defend themselves.

The ridiculous Senator Hunch actually confirmed she said it despite the M’Ladying of Hamish McCuckles today/yesterday.

She asked him to apologise after he put to her a rhetorical assertion that if she thought all men were predators, then she should stop auditions for a second husband.

He did not, then she cried to the media. He then made an innocuous remark on TV that a powerful and liberated woman would not be ashamed of. This from the same women who tried to make mileage out of a young comedienne being raped and murdered and declaring that not some men are idiots and pigs, but MEN. She wants to cry MUH MISOGYNEE! but she is an unhinged and proven man-hater (word for the day: MISANDRIST).

She then threatened to sue him for “slut shaming”, which she reckoned he did in the Senate (and on TV – wow, he can bilocate?), and she denied the remark Hunch confirmed.

Cory also asserted she has a track record of unparliamentary behaviour, and on McCuckle’s own ABC radio show, DL rattled off a list of ridiculous shit she has said to other Senators off record as rude and childish interjections. Some were completely ludicrous and otherwise shameful.

She should apologise, pay DL compensation and resign.

My grandfather, a WW2 vet, died of cancer and was in intense pain until the very last days when they finally hooked him up to a morphine drip. I was only young at the time and before the morphine, he always put on a show of everything being just fine when we went to visit him, but I knew he was suffering because of the way he couldn’t help grunting and grimacing and then smiling and winking at me when he moved slightly. I only knew how much pain he would have been in when I was older and found out how much morphine they had put him on in his final days. He was stoic in his decline. He didn’t use his suffering to guilt others into feeling bad for him.

You could learn something from him and countless others of his generation.

You are so utterly inept, m0nty. No wonder you are a failed journalist. Post a link that credibly demonstrates that this guy was “Sandusky on steroids” or retract.

Next generation giving me hope. Just saw the kids watching this:

struth, maybe zk2a will help you howl!

I got Cricket Pitch on ‘Special’ at Dan’s for 6 for $85.20 on Mon. Thought it the best I could at the time.

Just wandered out to get (another) glass of wine, and here’s the delightful Silvia Colloca doing her cooking show on the teev. Why am I not watching?

Young Richard Roxburgh had good taste, eh?

Seriously though, if you do like a shiraz that still says Gday for ten or so seconds of yumminess afer you’ve swallowed it, Nirvana by Claymore estates in the Clare Valley.
I’m down here for work but it all went to shit this week.

  234. As I said Struth. Once you mix it with soda water it all tastes the same.
I’m done. See you on the morrow.

    I resemble that remark.

  236. Oh come on

Or maybe I should say go Sandusky yourself, m0nty. Don’t Sandusky on steroids yourself, though, as you deserve worse.

May I say that both our Catallaxy PC’s, Peter Castieau and Peter Campion, write damned fine letters to the newspapers.

I resemble that remark. Being under the affluence of incahol, it’s a twelve year old single malt, and a decent pinot nior, or it’s nothing.

Well how do you think you find the good stuff.

Years and years ago me and my cousin used to enjoy this red from South Australia. Because it was good.

We laughed as the years went by and it became “the red”.

The law firm behind Steele Dossier is behind this. . . Meaning probably a real chance Fusion GPS is involved with it as well. . .

I wish I was sitting with you now and looking across the valley and sharing stories.

    But beware here in SA.
This is the state of the green death.

As a little boy living down here I know my grandpa used to drink it.
    Out of long neck bottles.
    Strangely he is now dead.
    It was salled Southwark.

You just remember that some of us respect, and admire the stand you took.
