“Despite his elitist background and his party seniority, Masisi is seen as relatively weak and vulnerable by political observers, who say his Achilles heel is that it is not clear what he stands for and that he is over-reliant on other, sometimes younger, members of the BDP.

The party’s 42-year-old secretary general, Mpho Balopi, is an important member of his inner circle.

Masisi has maintained a worrying silence about spreading corruption within government. And he and other close confidants appear hostile to the independent media.

In the build-up to the 2014 general elections, for example, he was reported as having told a closed party meeting that the press, especially “the big five” (Mmegi, Botswana Guardian, Midweek Sun, The Monitor and Gabz FM), needed to be severely punished. He has never disputed the report”

Peter Hitchens has written a brilliant new book on Britain’s romantic, bullshit stories about WWII – most especially regarding how Britain lost the war hands down (or, rather, hands up).

He’s rehearsed most of those topics in his regular column over the years, which is excellent value considering it can be had for free!

This morning’s includes a very justified dispraise of the Archbishop of Canterbury after his latest misadventure in social policy delivered with Hitchens’s usual droll wit:

I pray every day for Archbishop Justin Welby, though with no very great hope of success. Christians are supposed to pray for their enemies, and he seems to be one of those.

I will never forget the panic-stricken look on his face when I said a friendly hello to him at a Lambeth Palace reception, to which I had obviously been invited by mistake. I suspect – judging by his open dismay – that he would have preferred to have had Satan at his party. I left very soon afterwards…

Police Officer’s Widow Slams Nike in Open Letter: ‘You’ve Got This One Wrong’

A police officer’s widow posted an open letter to Nike on her Facebook page slamming the company’s latest ad campaign featuring former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, and her response has since gone viral.
Sherry Graham-Potter, an Arizona woman whose late husband, Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Graham, died in the line of duty in 2005, penned an emotional letter to the company speaking of how she wore a Nike cap while she grieved for her husband, and how that symbolized her husband’s “strength and sacrifice.”

    Sherry Potter
    4 September at 21:05 ·
    Dear Nike,
I want to have a conversation about this hat. It’s over 13 years old. I don’t remember when I bought it exactly, I don’t remember where I bought it. But what I do remember is why I wore it.
On August 10, 2005, I was a newlywed with two young sons. My husband Tim and I had toasted our one month anniversary the night before, and I was enjoying a rare evening to myself, catching up on reading and relishing the quiet. Until there was a knock on my door. I had no way of knowing that the small act of turning a knob was about to shatter my life into a million pieces. I sat numb and in sheer disbelief as I was told that my husband, while in a foot pursuit and subsequent struggle with a suspect that ended up in the road, had been struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle. He took his last breath lying in the middle of the street. What I lost in that moment is indescribable. I had to watch his mother be dealt the most agonizing blow a parent can face, and I couldn’t comfort her because I was in my own hell. I had to find a way to gut my own children in the gentlest way possible, and tell them that this man they had come to love, who they looked up to, who cared for them as his own, would never walk through our door again.
I don’t know if you’ve ever attended a police funeral, but watching grown men who’ve seen the absolute worst things a civilian can imagine, break down and sob over the casket of their brother is an image that never leaves you. The bagpipes haunt my dreams to this day, but it was the faces of my children, the innocence that abandoned them at such a tender age that brought me to my knees.
I had no choice but to move on. We trudged zombie-like through our days for weeks and weeks on end. I never left the house except to drive the boys to school, or buy food we barely touched. I realized that I had to do something. I had to move my body or I was going to crawl out of my own skin. So I put on the only cap I had and I went for a run. It was short, it hurt and it was ugly. But I felt, just for those few moments on that road, like a normal person. So I kept doing it. I put that hat on and I ran every day. Sometimes I had to stop and sit down because I was sobbing so hard. Sometimes I was so angry I ran until I thought I my heart would stop, sometimes I would just scream over and over again, but it still felt better than doing nothing.
That black cap became a symbol to me, it is sweat stained and it’s shape is gone, the buckle in the back barely closes; but that hat represents my family’s rise from the ashes. It stands for the strength and the sacrifice we made loving a man who had a job that we all knew could end his life, every time he walked out that door. And it did. And I accept that.
I still wear this hat, I wore it on my run this morning.
And then I heard about your new ad campaign.
Colin Kapernick has the absolute right to protest anything he damn well pleases. I don’t dispute that for one second. My father, my husband and many, many friends have all served this country and were willing to fight for his right to kneel.
But that right goes both ways. I also have a right to express my disgust at your decision to portray him as some kind of hero. What, exactly has Colin Kapernick sacrificed? His multi million dollar paycheck…? Nope, you already gave him one of those. His reputation? No, he’s been fawned over by celebrities and media alike. Funny, Tim Tebow was never called courageous when he knelt.
This man, whose contempt for law enforcement fits him like a…sock, has promoted an agenda that has been proven false time and time again, in study after study. But facts don’t seem to matter anymore. This man has thrown his support behind divisive anti-police groups, and donated money directly to a fugitive from justice who escaped prison after killing a police officer. I question the judgement of anyone who would put someone this controversial and divisive at the head of an advertising campaign, but it isn’t my company to run.
I don’t know if I’ll have he heart to ever get rid of this cap, but I will tell you this, I’ll never purchase another Nike product as long as I live. You got this one wrong Nike, terribly, terribly wrong.
Sherry Graham-Potter, surviving spouse of Deputy Tim Graham

The only thing that appears to be in agreement is that govt debt is bad. But I will continue to believe that funding govt debt from foreigners is worse than funding it from local sources until I understand what JC is trying to say

This is my summary of what JC is saying: yes government debt is bad, but our exchange rate is floating so regardless of where the debt comes from it’s all a wash in every other aspect. That’s because everything automatically adjusts around that floating exchange rate and Johnny Foreigner takes the risk on currency devaluation, so no one in Australia should care about where that debt is held.

My argument is that in any country (or any group decision making situation) if there’s a problem then the first step towards fixing the problem is recognizing said problem exists, and even better if you can understand the nature of the problem. Let’s look at recessions: these are indicative that either not enough investment has been done in the past (i.e. we have a shortage of capital) or the wrong kind of investment has been done in the past (i.e. we have plenty of total capital but a shortage of genuinely useful capital). For that reason, a recession should “FEEL” like a recession… it’s important for people to stop and re-evaluate their consumption decisions in the light of trying to identify what has gone wrong. It’s an Hayekian information discovery process, so when government borrows from an effectively infinite pool of overseas credit it causes the local currency to get stronger than it would otherwise be, and it makes the people feel wealthier than they really are. Consumption goes on as normal and the information discovery is destroyed.

The NBN is a good example, there’s a genuine entrepreneurial difficulty deciding whether to put the vast expense into ripping up copper lines to replace with glass fibers, or just do minimal maintenance on the copper and keep that “good enough” solution ticking over with a future transition to 4G, 5G, etc mobile data networks. Governments are exceptionally bad at this kind of decision making… but if they have the ability to hide the consequence of their bad decisions for a long time (i.e. keep pumping the thing with foreign borrowed money) a lot of people will happily believe the is no problem (especially if they get some free stuff and somewhere someone else has to pay for that).

Qantas QF9 forced to turn back to Perth over disruptive passenger
Staff writer, News Corp Australia Network

A QANTAS flight from Perth to London had to turn around about two hours after take-off due to a disruptive passenger last night.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner took off from Perth at 7.03pm (9.03pm AEST) and was due to land at 10.54pm in London after a 17-hour flight.

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/tony-newman/attractive-undercover-cop_b_1277330.html

Last year in three high schools in Florida, several undercover police officers posed as students. The undercover cops went to classes, became Facebook friends and flirted with the other students. One 18-year-old honor student named Justin fell in love with an attractive 25-year-old undercover cop after spending weeks sharing stories about their lives, texting and flirting with each other.

One day she asked Justin if he smoked pot. Even though he didn’t smoke marijuana, the love-struck teen promised to help find some for her. Every couple of days she would text him asking if he had the marijuana. Finally, Justin was able to get it to her. She tried to give him $25 for the marijuana and he said he didn’t want the money — he got it for her as a present.

Seducing 18-year-olds to fall in love or pretending to be friends and then tricking them into procuring small amounts of marijuana so they can charge them with felonies is beyond slimy and diametrically opposed to the officers’ charge to “serve and protect.”

  97. Confused Old Misfit

THE US elite got scuppered once again and they can’t take it politely.

Naomi Osaka, 20 years old, just became the first player from Japan to win a Grand Slam.

Yet rather than cheer Osaka, the crowd, the commentators and US Open officials all expressed shock and grief that Serena Williams lost.

Osaka spent what should have been her victory lap in tears. It had been her childhood dream to make it to the US Open and possibly play against Williams, her idol, in the final.

It’s hard to recall a more unsportsmanlike event.

Here was a young girl who pulled off one of the greatest upsets ever, who fought for every point she earned, ashamed.

At the awards ceremony, Osaka covered her face with her black visor and cried. The crowd booed her. Katrina Adams, chairman and president of the USTA, opened the awards ceremony by denigrating the winner and lionizing Williams — whose ego, if anything, needs piercing.

“Perhaps it’s not the finish we were looking for today,” Adams said, “but Serena, you are a champion of all champions.” Addressing the crowd, Adams added, “This mama is a role model and respected by all.”

That’s not likely the case now, not after the world watched as Serena Williams had a series of epic meltdowns on the court, all sparked when the umpire warned her: No coaching from the side. Her coach was making visible hand signals.

“I don’t cheat to win,” Williams told him. “I’d rather lose.”

She couldn’t let it go, going back multiple times to berate the umpire. At one point she called him a thief.

“You stole a point from me!” she yelled.

After her loss, Williams’s coach admitted to ESPN that he had, in fact, been coaching from the stands, a code violation. The warning was fair. . . .

Osaka, a young player at the beginning of her career, showed grit, determination and maturity on that court and off.

She earned that trophy. Let’s recall that this wasn’t Osaka’s first victory over Williams — she beat Williams back in March, causing a hiccup in that great comeback narrative.

Osaka earned her moment as victor at the US Open, one that should have been pure joy. If anything was stolen during this match, it was that.

    Shameful.

Although psychiatric manifestations in the form of delirium, confusional states, and psychosis have been commonly reported in relation to hypoglycemia, association of hyperglycemia with psychiatric manifestations has been less commonly reported. In this case report, we present the case of a 36-year-old woman suffering from Type 1 diabetes mellitus who developed recurrent episodes of psychosis following poor adherence to her insulin therapy, leading to significantly high levels of blood glucose. Adequate control of blood glucose levels by improving the adherence with insulin led to lack of recurrence of psychosis.

Another tells the war history and the latter treatment of a Belgian volunteer and his service on the Russian front. Interesting political background – I ‘d never heard of ‘Rexists.” I was aware og Leon Degrelle and his Fascist organisation, but this novel puts a little flesh on the bare bones. There is also the earliest reference I have ever heard of “Antifa” as an organisation under the control of the Communists in about 1944. The things these stories have in common is the political and social dimension from where the stories arose.

    John Hoskins (officer)
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vice Admiral John Madison Hoskins (October 22, 1898 – March 30, 1964) was an officer and aviator in the United States Navy. Four years after graduating the United States Naval Academy, Hoskins entered flight school and served his entire career in naval aviation, eventually commanding aircraft carriers in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Despite losing his right foot in an explosion aboard USS Princeton (CVL-23) in 1944, Hoskins refused retirement and went on to serve as the first commanding officer of the new USS Princeton (CV-37). After the war, Hoskins became a leading proponent of jet aircraft on carriers, was assigned to training command of the first naval aviators designated for carrier assignment, and himself flew as commanding officer of the flight demonstration which convinced the Department of the Navy that jet aircraft should be a part of the aircraft carrier’s fixed-wing complement.

In 1955 Republic Pictures released The Eternal Sea, a biopic taken from Hoskins’s life and written by Allen Rivkin after a story by William Wister Haines. The film featured Sterling Hayden as Hoskins, Alexis Smith as his wife Sue, Dean Jagger as his friend Thomas Semple, Hayden Rorke as William Buracker and Virginia Grey as Dorothy Buracker. The New York Times noted John H. Auer’s “deceptively simple direction”.[16] The reviewer especially praised “… some of the best and most unobtrusive photography of aircraft carrier scenes ever made”.

Serena Williams’ camp should be ashamed after ruining Naomi Osaka’s US Open fairytale

OPINION: Entitled Serena Williams should take a long hard look in the mirror after forever tainting a young devotee’s US Open fairytale.

…The Japanese-born star — who is 16 years Williams’ junior — stood silent at her end of the court as the circus unfolded. She proceeded to serve out the match 6-4 to take the first grand slam title ever won by a Japanese tennis player.
The saddest part of the fiasco is that young Osaka stood with her head bowed in tears at the post-match presentation.
It should have been her moment of glory after spending her entire life dedicated to raising one of the most revered trophies in tennis. Instead, she looked like an embarrassed kid not knowing where to stand in an hour when the stadium should have been hers.
Booing from the crowd — a phenomenon rarely seen after a grand slam final — will likely remain tattooed on the 20-year-old’s memory reel for the rest of her life.

    D DAY: THE LANDINGS

THE SELECTION OF D DAY was governed by several factors, complicated by the need of satisfying Allied requirements in five different landing areas, each with its own problems. It was desirable that D Day fall during a period when the days were long, for maximum use of Allied air power; when the moon was near the full, for better maneuver of ships and for easier night landings of airborne troops; and when tides were strong, so that beach obstacles would be fully exposed at low water and the landing craft could be floated far up the beach for convenient unloading at high water. Further, D Day must be selected with reference to certain requirements for H Hour, the moment when the first assault units touched down on the beaches. These were: that there be an hour of daylight before H Hour so that the preliminary bombardment would be as accurate as possible, and landing craft could be more easily organized into formation for the assault; that the tide should be near half-flood, so that obstacles would still be exposed, but rock ledges near the shore in the British one would not be dangerous; and that the tide be rising at H Hour, insuring two high tides during daylight to facilitate maximum unloading of supplies. Certain groups of days came nearest to satisfying all these requirements: 21-22-23 May, 5-6-7 June, and 19-20-21 June were closest to the target date of 1 June. On 8 May, D Day was fixed at 5 June.

In her first press conference since the Liberals lost the seat of Wagga Wagga, the NSW Premier also said “she doesn’t blame” voters for being angry at her government and that “she would have had the same response”.

“I don’t blame the people of the Wagga region for having the response they did. I would have that response if I was a person trying to raise a family, trying to make sure they have a good quality of life,” she said.

“If you see Governments focusing on themselves rather than the electorate of course you’re going to get that result, and I take that on board. I accept it.”

Ms Berejiklian said she had spoken with Prime Minister Morrison this morning and that they were “on the same page”.

“I have been in touch with the prime minister this morning and we’re both clear on the fact we need to work hard to regain the trust of the community,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Read it several times. There have been several claims that the work is fiction, but the maps and battles tend to give his story credence. I accept the book as being authentic based on ‘feel’ – the daily life detail seems well described without being overly detailed which is what happens when a novel tries to be a personal history.
Whilst on holiday in Toormina, I picked up some of the stuff left in my sisters place. Included was my old webbing which still had coffee sachets left in the pouch. Time hasn’t improved it – still undrinkable.

Australia’s IVF rates revealed: one in every 25 births an IVF baby

Just under 18 per cent of all initiated IVF cycles resulted in a live birth.

For the first time, there were more frozen embryo transfers than fresh cycles, with almost 60 per cent of IVF babies born via frozen embryo transfers in 2016.

    No mention of this

Thousands of IVF babies are being used as “human guinea pigs”, one of Britain’s most eminent experts warned yesterday.
Professor Robert Winston said test-tube babies could suffer terrible health problems because clinics were using IVF techniques which had not been properly tested.

Can you give Scouts canoe lessons while wearing a full Islamic veil? Absolutely not, says Brian, who devoted a lifetime to the Scouts but was kicked out after saying a Muslim Scout leader looked like Darth Vader

As a devoted Scout master, Brian Walker has spent decades teaching children how to canoe and climb hills, abseil down cliffs, pitch tents, build fires and cook bangers.

But last year – after more than half a century since he first joined the movement – he was thrown out, he says, like ‘an old slipper’.

What had he done to deserve summary expulsion?

Well, in an outburst which may be considered incendiary in our politically correct times, the British Canoe Union instructor had dared to suggest that a fellow leader, a Muslim woman, might endanger children by taking them out on the water in her niqab face veil.

How could she jump in to rescue a Scout in difficulty? How could she navigate her own canoe properly beneath her veil? How could she be sure her instructions were being seen and heard?

They’re questions many people might reasonably ask.

But Mr Walker went on to say Zainab Kothdiwala, the respected head of a thriving all-girl Scout pack in her home town of Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, looked like Darth Vader.

And he added that the sight of someone doing adventure sports in a full face veil would be incongruous enough to scare children and animals.

60-70% of our budget deficit is funded by foreigners.

They have always been problems with that count. No one knows for sure what the foreign holdings amount to. JPMorgan for instance runs a nominee account. How does anyone know who owns what.

It would be interesting what would happen if for some reason the govt was banned from borrowing overseas.

Interesting in what sense? If as you say 60% of the debt is foreign and the government banned foreigners from the Australian market, rates would shoot up to the stratosphere causing a depression. By your own account, foreign debt is 60% of the $800 billion owed by the states and federal governments etc. Borrowers would have to find $420 billion domestically thereby ratcheting up interest rates. In order for that to happen the balance of payments would quickly have to move to a surplus. The Australian Dollar would be absolutely crushed and interest rates would go through the roof.

The stated purpose of SBS is “to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia’s multicultural society”.

I don’t know why, but Martin Durkin’s fabulous essays on the very subject are no longer on the web and don’t know where they’ve gone. Durkin argues that the German aristocrats were the enforcers of a great deal of hatred because they felt threatened and didn’t want to participate in full scale industrialization. They loved their serfs. German industrialists got on the Nazi bandwagon because they believed the nazis would protect them from competition and as long as they took their margin, they didn’t give a rats.
