The best of the bad bunch are the Kurds, who are Sunni nationalists that everyone else hates

Syriacs protest Kurdish authorities over Syria school curriculum

Archbishop Jacques Behnan Hindo has claimed Kurdish authorities in north-east Syria have made relentless attempts to drive Christians out of the region of Hassaké-Nisibi, charity Aid to the Church in Need reported.

He said the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria (DFNS), the Kurdish self-governing regional authority, have been shutting down schools that teach Christianity to children.

He said some schools that have been shut down have been operational for more than 85 years and that the reason they are forcing the institutions to shut is because teachers have refused to teach the Kurdish curriculum.

Chinese Scientist Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Steal Trade Secrets From Drug Giant GlaxoSmithKline

A Chinese national has pleaded guilty to conspiring to steal trade secrets from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to benefit a Chinese drug company he helped start that’s backed by Chinese-regime funding.

Li Tao, 45, is the second person to plead guilty in a scheme that involves five co-defendants, including his friends Xue Yu and Mei Yan.

According to the Justice Department, Xue funneled key documents from GSK to Li and Mei that contained information about biopharmaceutical products that were under development, including research data and manufacturing processes related to those products. Xue usually used email or portable storage devices to transfer the documents.

Such products usually cost “in excess of $1 billion dollars” to research and develop, the Justice Department said.

Austria’s right-wing Interior Minister pushes asylum applicants back to 2010 levels

For the right-wing party of the FPÖ currently governing alongside the ÖVP it is a big success. Austrian tabloid Wochenblick reports, that in the first 8 months of 2018, exactly 9,337 asylum applications were made.

That is a 46.3 per cent decrease from last year. During 2010 more than 11,000 people applied for asylum in Austria.

Syrians are still the largest group seeking asylum in Austria with 2,351, followed by Afghans with 1,400 and Iranians with 723. Iranians are the only group, whose asylum applications have increased by a total of 20 per cent.

The total number of asylum seekers on social benefits recipients has also decreased from over 60.000 to 48.640. Afghans are the largest group of asylum seekers on benefits. Their applications also take the longest time to process. Around 53 per cent receive a positive asylum decision.

Herbert Kickl is satisfied with these developments in Austria and pushes for faster processing and deportation procedures: “There should not be any enticements to help traffickers and their business to lure even more people to Europe.”

In 14 states, Latinos accounted for at least 20 percent of K-12 students in 2016, up from six states in 2000, according to Census Bureau data. States new to this list in 2016 are Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington. Latinos account for about half or more of all K-12 students in three states – New Mexico (61 percent), California (52 percent) and Texas (49 percent).”

Speaking of Spanish still dominates, said Pew. “English use is on the rise among young Hispanics. Still, about six-in-10 say they use Spanish,” said the outlet.

“Homer Badman” also made me angry more generally, in the way only a episode of a 90s show could. In this one, Homer is indicted by the media for “sexually harassing” a female grad student. Except he was only really grabbing a gummy Venus de Milo off of her butt, not grabbing her ass. He gets featured on a tabloid-style show that edits his interview to make him “admit” to being a harasser. While this episode does a great job demonstrating the way media can snowball out of control, the episode’s entire premise is a load of hogwash. No one, literally not a single person on. the. planet. Would protest about a female grad student getting ass-grabbed.

Shut the fuck up sweetie. It was a satire of the Clarence Thomas thing and “talk show” bullshit in general.

Great, succinct post by Capt. Capitalism:

    How the Government Outsourced Socialism

It is without a doubt that “silent-partner socialist” countries that do NOT own the means of production are better than the centrally planned dictatorial “SOCIALIST” ones.

…but socialism and socialists never stop at finances. They need to get into people’s personal lives, no matter how much they claim to value social freedoms and liberties. The money is never enough.

And if you realize that the private sector made socialism 8 times more profitable than the government ever could, you’re going to soon realize the private sector will make socialism 8 times more tyrannical when it comes to your individual social liberties and freedoms.

Yup. China has had to create and roll out the means of totalitarian control – surveillance state and the new Social Credit control mechanism.

Google and Facebook will police the Deplorables on behalf of the State for free, and with the enthusiastic denouncements of all their staff.

One thing is clear, if Phelps wins the vote and hasn’t divested the result will go to the court of disputed returns.

Unlikely scenario. Payments made to Doctors, and other Health Professionals, under the Medicare arrangements are actually payments made on behalf of the patient. They require a signed release by the patient before payment can be made. Trump orders declass of documents crucial to the FISA warrant and (importantly) interviews with Ohr. Deliberately misleading the FISA court is a felony.

    (2) all FBI reports of interviews with Bruce G. Ohr prepared in connection with the Russia investigation; and (3) all FBI reports of interviews prepared in connection with all Carter Page FISA applications.

In addition, President Donald J. Trump has directed the Department of Justice (including the FBI) to publicly release all text messages relating to the Russia investigation, without redaction, of James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr.

This will unleash a tsunami of follow up investigations, indictments and eventually charges. Is Lynch talking? If so this would mean the whole exposure of the deep state has gone up a to a whole new level. This brings into play Hillary , Bill and Obama. Tarmac meeting? Squashing the Hillary emails investigation?

The big question in my mind is how will the MSM (exc Fox) react? So far they have been totally blind and silent on the FISA lies issue. Can they really ignore all this?

I have finished helping move someone into an aged-care place, just in time for a Royal Commission I see. The person wanted to go into aged-care, not yet 65 but assessed as suitable for early entry, has a mild intellectual disability but is very very frail and has been in hospital since May with very very serious health problems.

The place is brand new, each level has its own kitchen, dining and recreation area. On arrival the staff asked for all clothes etc.. so they could be labelled, they were back within hours. Over the last week I have been there many times at all different times of the day and the people residing there all appear calm and content, having a laugh or spending time with visiting family.

Having been no doubt under-nourished, hospital food being what it is, I was so happy to see much relish in tucking into the meals, the food at this place is freshly made, with lovely veggies and a small dessert at mealtime, there is also morning tea, afternoon tea and supper served every day.

The management is very efficient but understanding and the staff members (men and women – Aussies and many other nationalities) are very kind, I spoke to one fellow who told me he was Filipino and loved Jesus and that he was so happy to live in Australia.

We’ll see what comes of this but so far so good and considering previous living conditions it’s certainly chalk and cheese. I know the person is settling in and much happier because I no longer get distressed phonecalls.

The US dollar has been rising for a number of reasons and the $AUD has lost about 9% against the $US in the past 6 months. To estimate the ‘what next’ you need to understand the ‘why’.

Basically, the US economy is doing very nicely at present and a significant factor is directly related to the Donald Trump tax cuts that came into effect early this year. As a result, US official interest rates (with a knock-on effect globally) are on the rise. This makes US dollar denominated assets attractive relative to other international assets.

But, to finance those tax cuts, the US has to borrow. This fiscal year, the US will run a Federal deficit of nearly US$900 billion. For the following three fiscal years after that, the budget deficit is projected to be over US$1 trillion.

So, a lot of debt needs to be issued to finance this budget hole and the US Treasury is flooding the global market with bonds to finance the deficit. At the same time, the US Federal Reserve is reducing its balance sheet by ‘quantitative tightening’. This goes back to the GFC when the Federal Reserve bought up huge amounts of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. It did this to provide liquidity to the system and satisfy the huge demand for cash. Over the years, the Reserve’s balance sheet swelled to about US$4.5 trillion.

But now, the Reserve is reversing that process and when the bonds move off its balance sheet, it takes ‘cash’ (Federal funds) out of the system. It is self-evident that the simultaneous reduction of liquidity and issuing of huge amounts of additional treasury bonds to finance the deficit is US dollar positive.

Your question is how long will the US$ remain strong or more specifically, whether you should buy or sell US$ ? Sorry its taken all this time to say, but nobody really knows. Currency exchange is notoriously fickle. The slightest global ‘hiccup’ can cause markets to take flight (usually to the US$). For what its worth, I’m buying US$ but my motivation and circumstances are likely entirely different to yours. Caveat emptor. (Also, I am not a professional trader).

By the way, the goldbugs would also love to know the answer to the question of US$ strength as well.

(As to Trump closing the Fed, I just can’t imagine the circumstance. No, forget it.)

The capacity factor is a measure of the electricity a power source actually produces expressed as a % of the installed capacity of the power source which is the electricity it could produce working at its maximum all the time. A great graph at WUWT showing the situation in England where solar power is 19.5% of the total installed capacity but only produces 4% of the actual electricity.

That 19.5/4% ratio doesn’t take into account when and how solar produces its power which is often at times of excess supply and in a grid non-compatibility form. Wind similar

By comparison nuclear is 13.6% of the installed capacity but produces 22.8% of the actual electricity. Same for coal and gas.

The best renewable is biomass, wood, which involves cutting down trees.

England is a renewable mature economy. Renewables are shit.

The Chalmers experiment is correctly thought of as confirming that the Dirac Sea, and in turn, van der Waals forces really do exist.

The advance is significant more because it has the potential to make truly clean, extremely cheap energy. The vacuum has an energy density that makes alternative sources totally redundant. That is the bog takeaway from this. Of course this will have applications in exotic propulsion.

It could have been a decent short.

Trump win has meant around ~ 60% higher. Crooked would most have halved stocks, so a 50% move. That’s not a bad play either, but shorting is really hard to hold on, as the long side is better. The point is that Crooked wouldn’t have been any slouch as far as moves go either.

But Trump also said something that would seem … less than ideal. While describing Cohen’s allegedly limited work for him — a “tiny fraction” of his legal work, Trump assured — Trump confirmed to “Fox and Friends” that Cohen “represented” him in the Daniels case.

Is “Moderate Islam” an illusion? Moderate Islam is a wedge that will jam open the door to Jihad, and “evil will triumph when good Muslims do nothing.” The great majority of Muslims are not adherents of the radical line. Yet, because Islamists wage their war under the name of Islam, they receive immense direct and indirect support from rank-and-file ordinary Muslims. It is this support of moderate Muslims that keeps the Jihadists alive.

  179. JC

    Cronkite,

As a top lawyer in the country, you’re more or less saying you’d go into bat for a client who paid someone, who is essentially a hooker, 130K as blackmail money

Stay with me on this one. Meanwhile the hooker informs the court she hooked up with your client at a particular hotel on the West Coast that can all be verified and you reckon you could sway a jury by arguing the payment was (say) for gardening duties in his NY apartment that doesn’t have a garden.

No wonder you’re earning the big bucks doing land transfers.

The tryst occurred on the West Coast. Agent Orange doesn’t/didn’t own any casinos on the West Coast. You even have your localities wrong. In any event, the “Hush Agreement” was all bullshit, reliant on both sides keeping quiet. If it mentions casinos, it was nonsense, written that way on the assumption BOTH parties kept silent and challenged by other parties both could point to that.

What are we to make of this? The damage will already be done and irreversible?:

Energy Minister Angus Taylor has confirmed the Morrison government will not replace the renewable energy target after it peaks in 2020, officially creating a policy vacuum that opponents say will stifle clean energy investment and lead to higher prices.

In question time on Tuesday, Greens MP Adam Bandt challenged Mr Taylor to extend the target until 2022 to avoid a disastrous plunge in renewables investment when the current target ends.

“The renewable energy target is going to wind down from 2020, it reaches its peak in 2020, and we won’t be replacing that with anything,” Mr Taylor said.

Meanwhile, back here in the increasingly Disunited Identity States of Former-Australia, we will probably soon have a First Nations Parliament sitting over the colonial-settler oppressor seat-of-nominal government ( Martin Parkinson probably has a different view as to where the real government sits ); and will doubtless require separate Female and Patriarchal Houses of Oppressor Parliament – because bullies and sad.

And if we are going to separate the Femmes and the Patriarchal oppressors, we might as well have a Jirga for the aficionados of Sharia Law.

At which point every identity group must sensibly demand its own safe zone and governments – all funded by the colonial-settler Anglophone oppressors of course.

Insomedy – a non-humorous mutation of traditional comedy where the intent is to both insult and induce sleep within, up to half of one’s audience. Parasitic by nature, insomedians often attach themselves to a public broadcaster and burrow so deeply that surgical removal becomes the only, albeit expensive, option. Conservative scientists are still seeking a natural predator or other biological solution. Hence the hopeful phrase ‘Coat me in trump and throw me to the insomedians.’

So it was perhaps inevitable that when the opera-loving justice, her record producer son and his composer wife got together, the result would be a classical music album about her life and work called Notorious RBG in Song. This is so positive and the people I know well who have already participated in performing the song cycle are getting so much positive energy from it that I think, for me, it’s bringing some real light in some rather dark times.”

Japan’s foreign minister says country to open to foreigners

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Japan is gearing up to accept more foreign workers as its own population is on the brink of a steep decline, Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Friday.

Kono told a World Economic Forum meeting in Hanoi that Japan gains “value added” by accepting foreigners, especially since its aging population and low birth rate mean the country is shrinking by a half-million people a year.

“We cannot sustain our society like that,” he said in response to a question during a panel discussion. “We are opening up our country. We are opening up our labor market to foreign countries. We are now trying to come up with a new work permit policy so I think everyone shall be welcome in Japan if they are willing to assimilate into Japanese society.”

Japan has traditionally resisted accepting migrant workers, at times easing such restrictions but then re-imposing them during economic downturns. Many Japanese are uncomfortable with outsiders who might not speak their language or conform to expectations for how to behave.

Still, there are millions of foreigners living in Japan, including those who work in technical training-related programs or labor-short industries such as restaurants, construction and elder care.

The country has gradually been loosening restrictions to enable families to hire domestic help. It also has short programs to bring in foreign nurses from Indonesia and other countries. But language requirements have made long-term employment in such jobs difficult.

Kono cited sports stars including tennis sensation Naomi Osaka, the daughter of a Japanese mother and a Haitian father, as an example of the benefits of welcoming outsiders. Osaka, who was born in Japan but raised in the United States, is being lauded by Japanese as the first from the country to win a Grand Slam singles tennis title.

“It’s good to have diversity. It’s good to have an open policy,” Kono said.

  226. Nice words by Minister Kono.
I’ve a feeling the reality will be somewhat different for those who receive a “waitress visa”
