A very gruinaid selection of suggestions in their letters page (remember, these are the ones they think are intelligent enough to be worth printing) on how to “solve” knife crime/stabbings.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/07/knife-epidemic-should-surprise-no-one

Can anyone guess the only apparent non cause of stabbings as its not mentioned in any of the letters.

    Heres some highlights.

It is generally the points of eight- or 10-inch kitchen knives that cause fatal or life-threatening injuries, not the blades. In the longer term, injuries and deaths would be reduced if retailers sold such kitchen knives with rounded ends, not points.

Further legislation is always a last resort, but why can’t manufacturers, shops, police, local authorities and the government act together to reduce the sale of long pointed knives and provide an alternative of knives with rounded ends? It might be that an agreed pricing differential – say increasing the price of long pointed knives by £5, in comparison with rounded knives – would reduce the number of lethal knives sold.

Staggering school closing times to reduce numbers of pupils allowed out together categorically limits aggressive behaviour

How about putting pressure on central government to urgently reverse the awful funding cuts borne by local authorities over the last 10 years, so that the many closed-down youth centres, youth sports clubs, school counselling professionals and youth mental health services could be reopened and adequately staffed?
    ….
It is common sense that if we allow children to play these virtual reality games involving killing and all sorts of brutality, it will then be a small step to carry a knife and to use it. They have been carrying out “virtual” brutal acts from a young age.

If you close down youth services and take away opportunities and space for young people to be creative and develop skills and interests, should we be surprised when things go very dangerously wrong?

If true, it was a story worth keeping for an advantageous future time, just between the two of them.

I also have a view on who decided to leak it earlier this year.

As to the possible future outcome of Foley’s action for defamation, he’s already briefed counsel and sounds very fired up. Maybe he has witnesses prepared to swear it didn’t happen. Loss of a current Opposition Leader position and a future as NSW Premier now gone should be worth a very tidy amount as compensation. Maybe as much as the whole of the ABC’s annual budget.

    From Robert Spencer:

A Pakistani Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy eight years after being sentenced to death has is being flown out of the country for security reasons.
Amid tight security, Asia Bibi left a detention facility in Punjab province for a flight to the capital city Islamabad, officials said. Troops guarded the roads leading to the airport from which she departed.
Her lawyer Saif ul Malook said that she was being flown out of Pakistan with her immediate family but he did not know where they were going.
Authorities last month said they arrested two prisoners for allegedly conspiring to strangle her and since then additional police and troops have been deployed to the facility in Punjab.
Antonio Tajani, the president of the European parliament, tweeted: “Asia Bibi has left the prison and has been transferred to a safe place! I thank the Pakistani authorities.
“I look forward meeting her and her family, in the European Parliament as soon as possible.”
Ms Bibi’s move comes a week after the high court in a landmark ruling acquitted her and ordered her released.
It triggered nationwide protests and Ms Bibi’s release was put on hold on Friday after authorities held talks with radical Islamists who want her publicly hanged….

Exactly. They may hire more officers, more likely more bureaucrats to record reams of reports as a ‘response’, set up more task forces, and create outreach programs and propaganda explaining that mainstream society needs to change – but one thing they do not want is more arrests: bad statistics and showing that there is a problem after all, as well as alienating a voting demographic they want to keep.

  47. Old School Conservative

The two Anglican private schools I know a little about have had a lot of negative feedback for their support of the Anglican Synod letter to MPs.

The feedback has been fiercely negative, very loud, and delivered by many people. School kids have been part of this fierce backlash. The key message in the original letter was the right of Christian schools to hire staff who supported the ethos of the school. This important narrative has been ignored by media, protestors, and the school communities. No steps were to be taken to sack gay teachers, expel gay students, or prevent the hiring of gay staff.

The depth of vitriol against the headmasters who signed seems to be based on wanting to defend gay kids and staff against cruel decisions to sack or expel and this is misplaced. It is as though the good intentions of people who support the employment of gay staff has been hijacked into a rough justice against the Headmasters as part of a society-wide push to tear down Christian values.

Judging by the explanatory letters and meetings being held by the Headmasters, their original position has been swiftly walked away from. Diversity, inclusion, the love of Jesus for all, and removal of the religious exemptions that relate to LGBTQIA+ individuals – all take first place over the ethos of the schools.

Some may see that as a poor path to take.

Enhanced voting rights, proposed bill in Sweden’s parliament

    Voting rights for foreign nationals
One of the fundamental rights of a parliamentary democracy is the right to elect its representatives in free and universal elections. Today, there are many people who are permanently resident in Sweden and who are only able to influence their everyday lives through democratic elections to the municipal and county councils. The people denied today to exercise a democratic influence in referendums, parliamentary elections and EU parliamentary elections include those who came to Sweden as refugees who are spouses of Swedish citizens or who immigrated to Sweden for example studying or working.

The Left Party believes that the inhabitants of our country who are not Swedish citizens should have the same opportunity to vote in referendums, EU parliamentary elections and parliamentary elections as they have in municipal and county elections. We are convinced that this would involve a greater sense of participation, togetherness and increased self-esteem. We also believe that voting among these people will increase in municipal and county elections if they are given the confidence to also influence their own everyday lives and the future of the country through voting rights in parliamentary elections. Vallag en (2005: 837) should be amended so that voting rights to the Riksdag follow the same system as voting rights in municipal elections. This should be the Riksdag’s backing and to make the government feel.

    No.

Lol even better. He’s been booted from the WH on Fake News. Sweet justice for the fake news a/hole.

  90. Old School Conservative

    Thanks M0nty.
Now everyone has seen Acosta push the intern’s arm down and away so he could ask his umpteenth consecutive question.
The man’s a Democrat through and through. And him without his press pass now.
    Sad.

DID JIM ACOSTA ASSAULT A WOMAN?

    No.

Of course, he didn’t. That would have been to invite a third person into the tête-à-tête that he desired with Trump. Every single goddam time. The truly teenage levels of self-regard and self-reference in Acosta are completely off-the-charts. His desperate pathological need to be seen as the great fearless objective reporter, speaking truth to power, as if Jimmy Stewart is playing him in the movie of his life that is going on in his own mind. A nakedly partisan Democratic hack using the cover of “reporter” and “doyen of the White House Press Corps” to shill and campaign and agitate for that party 24/7/365. It is nauseating. And Monty’s hero, it goes without saying.

  92. mh

Sarah Sanders should hand over Jimbo’s press pass to Alex Jones.

  93. C.L.

Acosta’s minor physical assault is secondary in this case.
What’s more important is that a powerless intern whose lowly job is to pass the microphone to each new questioner was deliberately humiliated by him. It might be a lowly job but she is empowered to do it by the President of the United States. Acosta – Cuban banana boat trash – stood over her. In all modern sports – including all Australian sports – physically checking an official this way results in automatic suspension and penalty.

  94. C.L.

For example, if an NRL player refused to hand over the ball to a female ref (there are now one or two) after a knock-on and aggressively chopped her arm away, he would be sin-binned, placed on report and probably suspended for multiple games. Such an incident would also, inevitably, occupy the ‘minds’ of every left-wing and feminist sports reporter in the country for at least a week.

Hmm, seeing reports that the California shooter used a handgun. That would make a change from the usual AR-15.

There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms, and this number is not disputed. U.S. population 324,059,091 as of Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Do the math: 0.000000925% of the population dies from gun related actions each year. Statistically speaking, this is insignificant! What is never told, however, is a breakdown of those 30,000 deaths, to put them in perspective as compared to other causes of death:

    • 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws
    • 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified
    • 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons – gun violence
    • 3% are accidental discharge deaths

So technically, “gun violence” is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100. Still too many? Well, first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation?
    • 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago
    • 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore
    • 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit
    • 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington D.C. (a 54% increase over prior years)

So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause.

This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation, or about 75 deaths per state. That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others. For example, California had 1,169 and Alabama had 1.

Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California, of course, but understand, so it is not guns causing this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So if all cities and states are not created equally, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths.

Are 5,100 deaths per year horrific? How about in comparison to other deaths? All death is sad and especially so when it is in the commission of a crime but that is the nature of crime. Robbery, death, rape, assault all is done by criminals and thinking that criminals will obey laws is ludicrous. That’s why they are criminals.

But what about other deaths each year?
    • 40,000+ die from a drug overdose–THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!
    • 36,000 people die per year from the flu, far exceeding the criminal gun deaths
    • 34,000 people die per year in traffic fatalities(exceeding gun deaths even if you include suicide)

    Now it gets good:
    • 200,000+ people die each year (and growing) from preventable medical errors. You are safer in Chicago than when you are in a hospital!

    • 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. It’s time to stop the double cheeseburgers! So what is the point? If the anti-gun movement focused their attention on heart disease, even a 10% decrease in cardiac deaths would save twice the number of lives annually of all gun-related deaths (including suicide, law enforcement, etc.). A 10% reduction in medical errors would be 66% of the total gun deaths or 4 times the number of criminal homicides……Simple, easily preventable 10% reductions!

So you have to ask yourself, in the grand scheme of things, why the focus on guns? It’s pretty simple.:
Taking away guns gives control to governments.

The founders of this nation knew that regardless of the form of government, those in power may become corrupt and seek to rule as the British did by trying to disarm the populace of the colonies. It is not difficult to understand that a disarmed populace is a controlled populace.

Thus, the second amendment was proudly and boldly included in the U.S. Constitution. It must be preserved at all costs.

So the next time someone tries to tell you that gun control is about saving lives, look at these facts and remember these words from Noah Webster: “Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword, because the whole body of the people are armed and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. A military force at the command of Congress can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power.”

Remember, when it comes to “gun control,” the important word is “control,” not “gun.”

  104. Zulu Kilo Two Alpha

Umm, largely because the military version of the AR – 15 was the M-16, which was the standard rifle of the U.S. military for many years, and the market is awash with them. I’m still struggling to understand whatever point it is that you wish to make?

  105. • 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. It’s time to stop the double cheeseburgers! So what is the point? 107. C.L.

Angry white loners are still a long way behind angry black gangsters when it comes to shooting and killing people. It’s not even close, actually. That said, there is a multi-faceted pathology in the United States that cannot be denied: it involves guns, perpetual adolescent rage, payback, mass casualty violence as a sport, a morality rendered so absolutely subjective in the wider culture that useful, efficacious fear of consequences and guilt no longer exist in the minds of perhaps millions of young citizens (thank you, leftists; thank you, Hollywood; thank you, Planned Parenthood); add to all of that guaranteed, media-provided notoriety and what you get is a sickness which, at its core, is as nihilistic as anything perpetrated by Himmler or Pol Pot. In some ways, the more frightening scenario is what happens to the ones – let’s call them ‘shy shooters’ – who decide against a massacre but turn their rage instead to more survivable, enduring careers. Antifa, foe example, is like a colander for such people.

Mass shooters should not be named in any part of the web. If the name surfaces it should be scrubbed. Their history should also be deleted. 112. JC

Read a great point should always be used against leftists. You can even see the failure of socialism from space.

  113. Really? Explain the logical fallacy cocksucker!

The Economist did it for me.

SOVIET propagandists during the cold war were trained in a tactic that their western interlocutors nicknamed “whataboutism”. Any criticism of the Soviet Union (Afghanistan, martial law in Poland, imprisonment of dissidents, censorship) was met with a “What about…” (apartheid South Africa, jailed trade-unionists, the Contras in Nicaragua, and so forth).

It is not a bad tactic. Every criticism needs to be put in a historical and geographical context. A country that has solved most of its horrible problems deserves praise, not to be lambasted for those that remain. Similarly, behaviour that may be imperfect by international standards can be quite good for a particular neighbourhood.

But it can be overdone—and in the case of Soviet propagandists, it was, and gave rise to subversive jokes For example: A caller to a radio program asks, “What is the average wage of an American manual worker?” A long pause ensues. Then the answer comes: “U nich negrov linchuyut”” (“Over there they lynch Negroes”) — a phrase that, by the time of the Soviet collapse, had become a synecdoche for Soviet propaganda as a whole.

No wonder you lot use tu quoque so much, it’s a Russian thing.

Democrats would rather hold the House given a Republican president. They wouldn’t get moderate judges approved if they held the Senate, so they can at least use the House committees to achieve their goals. They can also start impeachment proceedings from the House, but wouldn’t be able to do so from the Senate.

The key here, OCO, is that nothing took place. There was no assault. There are no bruises. The intern tried to grab the mic back, Acosta held onto it. That’s it.

If Obama and his WH had lied about such a non-incident and posted doctored video from Daily Kos or similar, then yes I would join the criticism. But they never did anything like that, because they are not constant shameless liars like Trump and his minions.

  130. Oh come on

It wasn’t a blazing victory. That is clearly obvious. I’m certainly not claiming it was. What would have been a blazing victory would have been the GOP holding congress.

The result has complications for both sides. The GOP and the Trump brand has problems with suburban voters. The Dems have problems with their crazy hard-left base which could very easily box the party into an electoral oblivion.

Overall, I think the Dems lost because there was no clear, indisputable repudiation of Trump. Dems bet big on a couple of races that they normally wouldn’t be competitive in, or wouldn’t normally be a big deal. Sure, they lost these races by small margins but they needed to win at least *one*. They didn’t. If Beta won in Texas, that alone would have been pretty devastating. If Gillum beat De Santis, the mainstream punditry would already be unfurling the Trump obituaries. These things didn’t happen.

There isn’t a single Democrat pickup that is particularly indicative of anything negative wrt Trump. Nothing that the Dems hoped and hyped would prove to be indicative of something negative wrt Trump actually happened.

  131. Oh come on

The House has been dysfunctional ever since the Freedom Caucus started acting as a veto on just about everything, exploiting the Hastert Rule to bully the GOP moderates out of doing anything constructive. The Democrats aren’t going to get much legislation through if any. That doesn’t mean the House majority is meaningless, though.

If you think House committee hearings on Trump’s crookedness and the Russia stuff isn’t going to rate, you might want to look into some of that old Watergate history. Especially if they get hold of the tapes that Mueller has, like the ones Cohen made.

If there was anything to go after Trump, it would have been leaked by now from the intel apparatus. There’s zilch.

As usual JC, you haven’t been paying attention. This take of yours, it’s not going to look good in a week or two. More indictments are coming, and they will be further and further up the chain. Maybe even starting tomorrow.

  142. C.L.

Aware that Obama was headed for defeat – it turned out to be a 63 seat catastrophe; the worst humiliation for a first-term president since 1938 – the New York Times published this in late October, 2010:

In Losing the Midterms, There May Be Winning.

    Ahahahahahaha.
    But seriously …

The reality of presidential politics is that it helps to have an enemy. With Democrats controlling the White House and Congress, they shoulder responsibility for the country’s troubles. No amount of venting about George W. Bush or the filibuster rule has convinced the public otherwise. But if Republicans capture Congress, Mr. Obama will finally have a foil heading toward his own re-election battle in 2012.

“The best possible result for Obama politically is for the Republicans to gain control of both houses,” said Douglas E. Schoen, a Democratic pollster and strategist who helped President Bill Clinton recover from his own midterm Congressional defeat in 1994 to win re-election two years later. “That’s what Obama should want.”

Read the whole thing. Based on several precedents – most especially Truman and Clinton – a convincing argument is made that, for our purposes, proves Trump triumphed very bigly yesterday.

I can see that Ruth Bader Ginsburg has suffered serious injuries most likely under the pressure and stress of her very demanding job which she is desperate to be relieved of. She must be given early retirement, it is simply inhumane that a frail old lady like this be forced to work such absurdly long hours. Time for RBG to spend more time with the ‘fam before it gets any worse, you’d agree with that right, m0nster?

Poor old Ruth Bader Ginsburg. What a disgrace that the Left forced her to stay on SCOTUS, one of the most mentally draining jobs imaginable. The right and humane thing to do is to retire her after a lifetime of honourable service. She’ll be a hard act to follow! Fortunately there’s lots of very young judges out there, in their mid-to-late 40s at most, who could be persuaded to emulate RGB’s lifetime of selfless sacrifice on the Supreme Court.

The Dems sweeping the House but getting thumped in the Senate is a fantastic outcome. Paul Ryan was a total loser who will probably Flake out in his retirement and brag about blocking Trump’s wall. Pelosi couldn’t be much worse than that. On the other hand, Cocaine Mitch now has two good years to stack the judiciary from coast to coast, with thousands of hardline anti-Leftist judges. The Left could win the Presidency for 20 straight years and it will count for SFA, because every piece of law will be overridden!

  174. Fisky

The coming 7-2 SCOTUS majority must update their “originalist” legal doctrine, to mean that ANY piece of legislation that the Founding Fathers wouldn’t like must be abandoned, because it goes against the spirit of the Constitution. It’s time to make Leftism impossible. Forever.

Feminists offer ribs, organs to Ruth Bader Ginsburg

After news broke that 85-year-old Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized Thursday morning after falling and breaking three ribs, journalists, actors and authors took to Twitter to offer their support right down to their bones — literally.

Lauren Duca, a liberal columnist for “Teen Vogue” who once wrote President Trump was gas lighting America, took to Twitter offering her own body parts in order to keep Justice Ginsburg healthy.

Actress Leslie Grossman also joined in, “If Ruth Bader Ginsburg needs any of my bones or internal organs I don’t need mine.”

Something odd is occurring in Florida’s Senate race. Republican Gov. Rick Scott has declared victory over incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson. At the time, Scott led Nelson by a little over 34,500 votes. It’s now been cut to around 18,000. We’re heading into recountterritory, as Scott’s lead has swindled to 0.2 percent; less than half of one percent triggers an automatic recount. Yet, in two Democratic bastions—Palm Beach and Broward counties—they’re taking their sweet time counting the votes and not telling how many are left outstanding. The state was recently hit by a category four hurricane and yet every county in the state, including the ones slammed by Michael, have all counted their votes. In Broward, the supervisor there isn’t keeping regular reports on the ballots that need to be counted. She also appears to not know, and has been dumping thousands at a time in the late night hours.

Victoria state election Labor candidate was an ALP hating Green

EXCLUSIVE: A TWO-time Greens candidate who once slammed Labor for being “fake” and “scandalous” will run for the ALP in the state election.

Fiona Mackenzie is the Labor candidate in the seat of Bulleen — held by Opposition Leader Matthew Guy on a 10.6 per cent margin — where she ran in 2006 and 2010 for the Greens.

As a previous candidate she described former federal Greens leader Bob Brown as a “guiding light for the Gillard-Labor section of the government” and slammed the North East Link, which Labor is promising to build to link the Eastern Freeway to the M80 in Greensborough.

Isn’t this cultural appropriation, or something?

The cakewalk or cake walk was a dance developed from the “prize walks” held in the late 19th century, generally at get-togethers on black slave plantations after emancipation in the Southern United States. Alternative names for the original form of the dance were “chalkline-walk”, and the “walk-around”. At the conclusion of a performance of the original form of the dance in an exhibit at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, an enormous cake was awarded to the winning couple. Thereafter it was performed in minstrel shows, exclusively by men until the 1890s. Link

Anglican Archbishop apologises for letter pushing to give schools the right to discriminate against gay staff and students
    CHRISTOPHER HARRIS, The Daily Telegraph

    Subscriber only

A LETTER pushing to give Anglican schools the right to discriminate against gay staff and students had caused “hurt and pain”, Sydney’s Anglican Archbishop said as he apologised yesterday.

Archbishop Glenn Davies issued a formal apology to staff and students, saying he was “deeply sorry” for the unfortunate consequences of the letter sent to federal MPs last week.

“There were fears that gay students were going to be expelled or gay teachers sacked,” Archbishop Davies wrote.

    “This really saddens me.

“The letter was addressed to federal MPs and the intent was to promote religious freedom for Anglican schools but I realise that it had the unfortunate consequence of affecting many gay students and teachers in our schools, for which I am deeply sorry.”

He said he had now approached the government and opposition seeking a bipartisan approach to create new religious freedom legislation, rather than isolated anti-discrimination exemptions for religious institutions.

Anglican schools faced a backlash from students past and present over the letter.

The heads of individual schools, including Tara Anglican School for Girls, Shore School and Mosman Preparatory School for Boys, have already issued apologies to their school communities.

The big story of the wool market up until the last few weeks has been the strength of the short staple wool shorn at six months instead of shorn at twelve months for a longer staple.

the chicoms have just bombed out the short staple carding wool price.

Sold some short staple stuff a couple of months ago for a river of gold, but had some of the same description up for auction this week and even passed in some high vegetable matter pieces at half valuation.

The industry has seen a big swing into shearing more than every twelve months to supply the demand for short staple, now the chicom demand has evaporated, what will be the response?.

Easy to just wait and watch the market and let the wool grow longer.

Have shearing booked in for next week, but will just shear the crossbred lambs now, for grass seed control and a healthier lamb more than woolcut. Plus some old crossbred ewes where the wool value isn’t as important and the price moves not as strong.

When the chicoms are a hundred percent of the buying market for short staple, you are over a peoples liberation army barrel. think about that mr belt and road Andrews.

  227. Helen

Lizzie, I think most people simply don’t care, or aren’t aware and feel no need to be aware. They get their food, they have warmth and shelter, their needs are met and that is the end of it. Most wouldn’t / couldn’t take a helicopter view and to the best of my knowledge, like civics, agriculture or where our food comes from is not taught in school. I don’t think anyone would be interested in a book unless maybe the farmer was a transgender trying to raise one X sex kid with their transgender partner at the mercy of da seasons, markets, etc. And their kid who doesn’t know what sex it is yet integrating in the local school and trying to use all sets of toilets.

Something along those lines might make a book, and a mini series. The risk would be the message re the farming side of things would be lost in the social justice focus.
