When I think back, he was also in the Navy during the war, supplying Tobruk, was a navy boxer, and had one of those tattoos on his forearm like bloody Pop-eye.

    Compare and contrast:

    Struth’s grandad’s navy:

The movements in and out of Tobruk during the siege were as follows:

The ships delivered 72 tanks, 92 guns, 33,946 tons of stores, ammunition, food and fresh water and 108 live sheep (food for the Indian troops). 32,667 troops were evacuated and were replaced by 34,113 fresh troops. 7516 wounded men were transported to base hospitals and 7097 captured prisoners were taken to the rear.

Twenty seven Naval ships were sunk and 27 damaged. Seven Merchant ships were sunk and six damaged. The casualties were Naval personnel killed or missing 469, wounded 186 and Merchant Service killed or missing 70, wounded 55.

    Mona Shindy’s navy.

Yes struth, we are letting your grandad’s generation down.

Zoe Daniels – the ABC’s far left-wing ‘Washington correspondent’ (that means she does stenography for the Democrats) has just filed what may be the longest and most deranged ensemble of anti-Trump talking points ever published in a single ‘report.’ The most amusing aspect is the newly-minted love and respect for the Bush family.

The liberal party did not store the refugee Dr Bill. Cory Bernardi did in an extraordinary filibuster and for that the nation should be extremely grateful to him. He need not have done that he could have done what all the other micro party crossbench fuckwits do and exploited that situation for himself. But he didn’t – he put Australia first and common sense first. His actions yesterday spoke volumes just as the destructive actions of Labor Greens Phelps and the other fuckwit s ike Derryn Hinch. We’re not out of the waters yet because that bill will come before the reps I think when parliament sits again so the Libs have the entire break to work out how to stop it but only thanks to Cory Bernardi. They won’t because they’re fuckwits which is why Cory Bernardi left them.

Finland Shocked by Migrant Grooming Gangs Assaulting Girls as Young as 10

A series of s3xual attacks against teenage and even preteen schoolgirls, with the suspected involvement by migrants from the Middle East, has shaken Finland, prompting condemnation from top-ranking politicians including Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and President Sauli Niinistö.

A group of eight immigrants suspected of brutally [email protected] and s3xually assaulting schoolgirls over a prolonged period of time have been arrested in the Finnish town of Oulu. According to the police all the men came to Finland as asylum seekers or refugees, some from the Middle East, national broadcaster Yle reported.

The alleged abusers are aged 18-40, whereas their victims were all aged under 15, with the youngest only 10 years of age. At least some of those detained have already received Finnish citizenship.

“We are talking about a period several months”, police commissioner Markus Kiiskinen told the newspaper Kaleva. “The suspected crimes are extremely violent and are exceptionally high-level”, Kiiskinen added.

Oulu deputy police chief Arto Karnaranta admitted that he has never seen anything similar in his nearly 38-year-long career as a police officer.

“It constitutes extremely serious aggression against minors. I haven’t seen anything similar in my entire career”, Karnaranta said.

Deputy police chief Karnaranta urged the public in Oulu to keep calm and not to take matters into their own hands, but instead let the police handle the case.

The police in the city of Oulu released an official message to young girls and their parents, warning them of foreign men contacting the young girls on social media and luring them in to situations where they are raped and s3xually abused.

More arrests are expected, according to the Oulu Police Department.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä condemned the terrible s3xual assault, calling the events “outrageous”, as well as an “inhuman act of incomprehensible evil” in a tweet.

In an official statement, Sipilä elaborated that a number of foreigners are suspected of “the worst crime” against children under the age of 15. Sipilä called integrity a “fundamentally important issue”, pledging that criminals will receive their due sentences regardless of their ethnicity. The prime minister also stressed that penalties for s3xual offences against children must be in line with people’s perception, stressing that a bill to increase punishment has been submitted to parliament.

This message was in effect echoed by President Sauli Niinistö, who called the crimes “shocking in their inhumanity”, the daily newspaper Ilta Sanomat reported. According to Niinistö, Finland must muster strength to fight this “evil”.

“This should not be happening in Finland”, Interior Minister Kai Mykkänen told the newspaper Iltalehti.

Mykkänen said that Finnish society must “find ways to prevent similar cases” and claimed harsher sentencing one of the ways to go.

According to Mykkänen, the authorities should take a closer look into immigrants’ attitudes.

“Education and work are of course already being done for integration, but we still have to look at what can be required more clearly in the attitudes, looking into ways in which those who move here can become committed to our values”, Mykkänen said.

“Sometimes it feels like nothing can shock you, but this case certainly does”, law professor Johanna Niemi of Turku University said.

The Finnish government is currently working on toughening punishment for s3xual crimes where children are victimised, as well as a new legislation that would allow quicker deportation of criminal foreigners.

According to Statistics Finland, foreign nationals are disproportionately represented in s3x crime statistics. In 2017, 693 Finnish citizens were suspected of [email protected], compared with 286 foreign nationals.

Struth – your post about your grandparents brought back innumerable memories to me about mine.

My grandfather was in WW1 but in many other respects he was ‘the same’ as your grandfather. Ditto for our respective grandmothers. I imagine that many Cats would have similar recollections.

The thing is, yes, ‘we’ have let them down. They worked bloody hard and created the great country Australia became. They could do almost anything – practical, ingenious, strong, resilient, resourceful…. with a bit of rat cunning thrown in for good measure.

They wouldn’t recognise Australia now. I can imagine my grandmother saying something about ‘progress’ whilst grandpa would mutter something to himself. But I also imagine there would be no hiding the despair in their eyes as they surveyed the ‘new’ Australia. I won’t bother to list the problems – we all know what they are – just as we know that the work ethic, morality, social fibre and principles of this country have changed forever, and IMO, not for the better.

Perhaps I’m getting too old and, as is common, long for what I perceive as the ‘good old days’. Maybe, but I cannot shake the feeling that this country has irredeemably squandered the stable and sturdy base built through blood, sweat and tears that was left to us by our forebears.

    Very naughty!

    Bill won’t play with Emma.

Emma’s chucking all of the toys out of the sandpit:

Shorten doesn’t want Husar to run for Labor in Lindsay

Bill Shorten says he does not want controversial Labor MP Emma Husar to run for the Labor Party in Lindsay.

Ms Husar stood aside as the party’s candidate in her marginal Western Sydney seat after she was hit with bullying and sexual harassment allegations. But she has since claimed she was defamed and wants to run for re-election.

However the Opposition Leader said today he still believes that Ms Husar stepping aside as the party’s candidate is the “best thing.”

“I said at the time when Emma wrote saying she wasn’t going to recontest the election, that that was the right decision then for her and the party. I haven’t changed my mind,” he told reporters in Canberra.

“I understand that (she wants to run). But I haven’t changed my mind.”

The NSW Labor Party will meet today to start the preselection process for the seat and it is speculated former NSW state minister Diane Beamer will ultimately be named the candidate.

Ms Husar said yesterday she would take legal action against BuzzFeed over a series of articles which levelled bullying and sexual allegations against her.

She told the House of Representatives that she was “slut shamed” by a series of articles by BuzzFeed journalist Alice Workman which detailed allegations of bullying by Ms Husar’s former staff members.

BuzzFeed also reported an allegation that the MP had made a lewd gesture in proximity to ALP frontbencher Jason Clare.

The incumbent MP told the House that she “was not a bully” and “not Sharon Stone”, in reference to the report about her interactions near Mr Clare.

Manager of opposition business Tony Burke told ABC Radio that he rarely criticised the media but said that particular allegation was “demonstrably untrue.”

“There is a frustration … there is no doubt that in at least one of those allegations, certainly the most salacious allegation against Emma Husar, it was demonstrably untrue,” he said.

“And it was published one minute before she was asked for comment. And that is a terrible way for any organisation to pretend to be informing the public.”

A BuzzFeed spokeswoman said yesterday the website was considering its position after Ms Husar’s statement and would “respond in due course”.

Ms Husar is also reportedly considering legal action to keep her preselection, as she understands she is still the endorsed Labor candidate for the seat, and she has not ruled out running as an independent.

When asked if he would be angry if Ms Husar defected from Labor, Mr Shorten said: “I’m not going to start judge Emma at all.”

The handwriting of GPs, like Karen (sic) Phelps, doesn’t matter much these days. By and large, they now use their desktop PC to print out scripts and referrals. Some specialists do hand-write scripts, but their opinions are almost invariably dictated into a handheld digital recorder and printed out by their medical secretaries.

Pierre Yang brings 500 members to the WA Labor Party

Controversial West Australian Labor MP Pierre Yang has recruited a record 500 party members — almost all of them from his local ethnic Chinese community — since being elected to parliament 18 months ago.

Some in the Labor Party in WA are worried about the rising influence of Mr Yang — whose network of associates in Perth includes figures sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party — across branches in Perth.

The WA division has about 7000 members in total, meaning Mr Yang has enlisted about one in 14 members of the party in the state. This gives him potential influence over party preselections and over policy matters at state and national conferences.

The recruitment drive has been centred on branches in Gosnells and Thornlie, as well as Churchlands in Perth’s western suburbs.

His 500 new members have brought in tens of thousands of dollars in annual membership fees for the party, Labor sources have confirmed.

Mr Yang, the McGowan government’s whip in the upper house, would not say how many members he had helped to sign up.

The Australian revealed this week that Mr Yang had failed to disclose his membership of an association that is affiliated to the Chinese Communist Party and another group that strongly supports Beijing’s military build-up in the disputed South China Sea.

You hone the cylinders, yes they do go out of shape and also they get polished to a shiny surface over time, which is not desired, compression loss.

Honing makes them round again and introduces tiny crosshatching to the cylinder walls, roughens them up sorta.

    Predictable:

Fr Philip Wilson, the former Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide, was found guilty by Magistrate Robert Stone in Newcastle Local Court on 3 July 2018 of failing to report a child sex abuse allegation. The prosecution maintained that Fr Wilson had been told that a Catholic priest was a child sex abuser in the mid-1970s and that he had failed to report this matter to NSW Police between April 2004 and January 2006 – as required by Section 316A of the NSW Crimes Act.

That night Julia Baird presented The Drum on ABC TV with a panel that comprised Dee Madigan, Stephen O’Doherty, Megan Motto and Karen Middleton. It was a total pile-on against Fr Wilson. So much so that even Dr Baird declared “there seems to be a consensus on the panel here” – having previously bagged the Catholic Church herself for what she described as “obstructive clericalism”.

The pile-on occurred despite the fact that neither the panellists nor the presenter had read Magistrate Stone’s judgment. Indeed, the judgment is still not readily available –as Fr Frank Brennan documents in his article titled “Philip Wilson’s dead letter day” in today’s edition of Eureka Street.

Yesterday in the Newcastle District Court, Judge Roy Ellis overturned Magistrate Stone’s decision. He found that Fr Wilson should not have been convicted beyond reasonable doubt. Judge Ellis, while believing that the complainant in this case was an honest witness, said that he was not satisfied with the accuracy of some of the complainant’s recollections. He found that Fr Wilson was an honest and forthright witness. Judge Ellis also held that it was possible for entirely honest individuals like the complainant to have false memories.

So what did The Drum do last night with respect to Judge Ellis’ decision? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The case was covered by ABC TV News but ignored by The Drum and 7.30.

When Fr Wilson was convicted by Magistrate Stone, the ABC reported that this was a finding of international significance and discussed the case at length. However, when Fr Wilson was acquitted by Judge Ellis, the matter was not covered by The Drum or 7.30.

The decision in R v Phillip Edward Wilson has been released with certain names redacted.

I have to say, meeting up with either of these two doofuses in a cage could be a little scary. My money is on the Russian.

I believe the non-hairy guy is English not Russian.

The Brits have a long history of boxing, usually not great at wrestling. Big guys usually aren’t too fast but muscling up does not improve the ability for your skull to take concussion and the Iranian hasn’t done a whole lot of striking so one good punch to the head could bring him down. Depends if the Englishman has his eye in… he’s taller so he will have longer reach and get first opportunity to make contact, but he might miss.

Should the US join Opec? 🙂

America turned into a net oil exporter last week, breaking almost 75 years of continued dependence on foreign oil and marking a pivotal — even if likely brief — moment toward what U.S. President Donald Trump has branded as “energy independence.”

The shift to net exports is the dramatic result of an unprecedented boom in American oil production, with thousands of wells pumping from the Permian region of Texas and New Mexico to the Bakken in North Dakota to the Marcellus in Pennsylvania.

While the country has been heading in that direction for years, this week’s dramatic shift came as data showed a sharp drop in imports and a jump in exports to a record high. Given the volatility in weekly data, the U.S. will likely remain a small net importer most of the time.

“We are becoming the dominant energy power in the world,” said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. “But, because the change is gradual over time, I don’t think it’s going to cause a huge revolution, but you do have to think that OPEC is going to have to take that into account when they think about cutting.”

The shale revolution has transformed oil wildcatters into billionaires and the U.S. into the world’s largest petroleum producer, surpassing Russia and Saudi Arabia. The power of OPEC has been diminished, undercutting one of the major geopolitical forces of the last half century.

Little River grassfire threatens properties west of Melbourne
Tamsin Rose, Peta Fuller and Sophie Welsh, Herald Sun
    an hour ago

A fire has destroyed two homes in Altona, as crews west of Melbourne battle a separate raging grassfire.

The Altona fire began in the front two bedrooms of a home in Railway Street before the hot and windy weather caused it to spread to an adjoining home.

No-one was injured in the fires.

It comes as more than 130 homes have come under threat as a grassfire in Melbourne’s outer west continues to burn out of control.

The Little River grassfire is not yet contained, with emergency services warning of structural damage, including a number of destroyed sheds.

It is not yet clear if any homes have been damaged.

An evacuation notice for the area was this afternoon downgraded to a watch and act notice.

Recent hazard reduction at Little River?

    Extremely so.
Leave it to the engine repair bloke, we tried tight tolerance once in an old engine.
Hardly room for the rings and the piston material is tough as, will not wear off the way we thought it would.

France protests: Tourist sites to close on Saturday amid Paris riot fears

Tourist sites in Paris are to close on Saturday amid fears of further street violence from “yellow vest” anti-government protests.

Across France, 89,000 police officers will be on duty and armoured vehicles will be deployed in the capital, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced.

Police have urged shops and restaurants on Paris’s Champs-Elysees to shut and some museums will also be closed.

Paris endured some of the worst rioting in decades last Saturday.

The government has said it is scrapping unpopular fuel tax increases in its budget – the original trigger for the protests.

After a heart attack, I was told to be careful of extra fat around the waist. The (very crude in more ways than one) test was whether a bloke does or does not need to suck in his gut to see the end of the old fella.
