Actor, director Penny Marshall dies at 75

Penny Marshall, who starred in Laverne & Shirley before becoming one of the top-grossing female directors in Hollywood, has died. She was 75.

Marshall’s publicist, Michelle Bega, said Marshall died in her Los Angeles home on Monday due to complications from diabetes. “Our family is heartbroken,” the Marshall family said in a statement.

Marshall starred as Laverne DeFazio, the Milwaukee brewery worker, alongside Cindy Williams in the hit ABC comedy Laverne & Shirley. The series, which aired from 1976 to 1983, was among the biggest hits of its era. It also gave Marshall her start as a filmmaker. She directed several episodes of Laverne & Shirley before making her feature film directorial debut in Jumpin’ Jack Flash, the 1986 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg.

A group of young men cut a man on the throat with a knife at a service station and carjacked another man in a night of terror on Brisbane’s southside.

The drama began about 10.13pm when a man at a service station in Fairfield Rd, Yeronga was confronted by the group, described as of African appearance and in their 20s, who demanded his car keys.

A fight broke out before one of the group produced a knife and used it to cut the man on the neck, leaving him with minor cuts.

Police seize taxi, fine driver and passenger under NT Liquor Act
    NT News
    December 18, 2018 6:32pm

A TAXI has been seized and its driver and passenger fined after allegedly delivering grog to an alcohol protected area.

Alcohol Policing Unit officers reportedly saw the taxi enter a drive through liquor outlet in Millner last Friday morning.

Police say the passenger then purchased a two litre box of wine in clear view of the taxi driver.

The taxi driver then continued with the woman and the booze to Bagot Community.

The community is an Alcohol Protected Area.

At this point police officers stopped the taxi and seized it.

The NT Police Alcohol Policing Unit seized the taxi under Section 95 of the Liquor Act.

The driver, a 29-year-old man and the passenger a 44-year-old woman, were issued infringement notices.

Bagot Community is an Aboriginal community in Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was formerly known as the Bagot Aboriginal Reserve. It is now the largest Aboriginal community in Darwin, home to nearly 400 Aboriginal people.

I remember when I bought a small farm back in Canada in 1973. Had a half hour chat with the local bank manager.

    Melbourne visits Brisbane:

The victim of a carjacking in Brisbane last night has recounted the terrifying ordeal.

Police are hunting the attackers, who are also behind a separate stabbing.

Saurav Raul said he was reversing his red Toyota Yaris out of his driveway in Paragon Street, Yeronga after 10pm when he was assaulted.

He said a group of men dragged him from his car and punched him in the head before stealing his vehicle.

“So they start beating me and I tell them, ‘Take everything, just leave us’. But they didn’t stop, they just kept punching me in my face and they kicked her in her neck,” Mr Raul told 9News exclusively, pointing to an unidentified woman off camera.

The stolen vehicle is described as a red 2006 Toyota Yaris with Queensland registration 180-WVP.

Just minutes before, the same group of men stabbed a man in the neck at a 7-Eleven nearby, police said.

The group confronted a Mercedes driver at a petrol station in Fairfield Road about 10.15pm.

Police said the attackers demanded the man’s keys before cutting his neck with a knife during a fight.

Shocking footage shows the attackers grab the man by the neck before his terrified partner runs inside for help.

7-Eleven attendant Harsh Kuruntel told 9News: “He got stabbed. They hit him with a knife so he had blood all over. That’s why we brought out a first aid kit afterwards.”

The men are described as African and being aged in their mid-20s.

Virgin Australia flight seconds from crashing after engine ‘flamed out’ on route to Canberra

A Virgin Australia plane was seconds away from crashing near Canberra Airport after both of its engines cut out mid-flight last Thursday.

Flight VA660 was en route from Sydney to Canberra on 13 December when the plane’s right engine “flamed out” at 11,000 feet, causing the engine to completely stop working for five seconds.

After descending a further 1000 feet, the aircraft’s left engine also “flamed out” before restarting moments later.

The crew were placed on standby to manually restart the engines from the cockpit for the rest of the descent into Canberra Airport.

No one was injured in the ordeal.

    No.
No they weren’t “seconds away from crashing”.
Assuming it was a 737 or similar, it would have a glide ratio of about 17:1 to 18:1.
That means it would glide 3 miles for every 1,000 feet of altitude lost, or 30 miles from 10,000 feet.
OK, it is not ideal to have both engines quitting, but I do wish kiddie journos would not assume that engine failure means dropping like a brick to terra firma.

Two Brains Are Better Than One: AI and Humans Work to Fight Hate

It started with a conversation. About two years ago, Claudia von Vacano, executive director of UC Berkeley’s social science D-Lab, had a chat with Brittan Heller, the then-director of technology and society for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The topic: the harassment of J3wish journalists on Twitter. Heller wanted to kick the offending trolls off the platform, and Vacano, an expert in digital research, learning, and language acquisition, wanted to develop the tools to do it. Both understood that neither humans nor computers alone were sufficient to root out the offending language. So, in their shared crusade against hate speech and its malign social impacts, a partnership was born.

Makes you wonder what brought that on so suddenly.
The greatest, saddest irony of the Democrat-financed Wussia panic is that the institutions of the US government (including its courts and media) are now indistinguishable from the old Soviet nomenklatura.

To repeat something I have said before, the only peaceful solution that I can see for the US is a vote by county (by state is too coarse grained, catching up rural areas in states dominated by a few large urban centres) on the questions:

    a) Do you wish to join a federation of counties governed under the Declaration of Independence and the current Constitution?

    Or

    b) Do you wish to join a federation of counties governed by the principles of progressivism and social justice?

Divide the territory and government resources accordingly, allow free movement each way for a year, tghen each goes its separate ways.

The alternative is starting to look like civil war.

These people deserve to be treated violently:

US man who refused to bake for gay wedding faces fresh lawsuit over transgender cake.

The US baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple on religious grounds is facing a fresh lawsuit — this time for refusing to bake a cake celebrating a gender transition.

Lawyers for Jack Phillips, of Colorado, argued the state was treating Mr Phillips with hostility because of his Christian faith and pressing a complaint that they labelled an “obvious set-up”.

Transgender lawyer Autumn Scardina called Mr Phillips’s bakery, Masterpiece Cakeshop, in 2017, requesting a cake that was blue on the outside and pink on the inside.

Mr Phillips’s shop refused to make the cake after [Mr] Scardina revealed she wanted it to celebrate [his] [“]transition[“] from male to [“]female[“].

“[He] believes as a matter of religious conviction that sex — the status of being male or female — is given by God, is biologically determined, is not determined by perceptions or feelings, and cannot be chosen or changed,” his lawyers said.

But the Colorado Civil Rights Commission said Mr Phillips had discriminated against [Mr] Scardina because [he] is transgender…

The Supreme Court ruled in June that the Colorado commission showed anti-religious bias when it sanctioned Mr Phillips for refusing to make the gay wedding cake, voting 7-2 that it violated Mr Phillips’s First Amendment rights.

But the court did not rule on the larger issue of whether businesses can invoke religious objections to refuse service to people who are part of the LGBTQ community.

PROFESSOR GUILTY OF VANDALISING NRA LOBBYIST’S HOME
    19 December 2018

The firearms debate in the US has become even more rancorous with an anti-gun activist convicted of spraying fake blood on the front steps of the home of the National Rifle Association (NRA) chief political lobbyist.

Chris Cox, who lobbies the US administration and politicians on behalf of the NRA, wasn’t at home when University of Nebraska-Lincoln sociology professor Patricia Hill sprayed a red sticky substance outside his house in Alexandria, Virginia. But his wife and two young children were.

The matter wasn’t actually described as blood. Mr Cox said it was “some sort of blood-like substance” while security guard Wyatt Delaney, who witnessed the offence, likened it to a “red gel-like substance,” the Washington Post reported.

AFL star Majak Daw, who is in a serious condition in hospital after plunging from the Bolte Bridge into the Yarra river on Monday night, recently spoke out about confronting his demons.

Daw, 27, told a documentary crew: “I have always believed that, you know, tough times won’t last. But if I can just ride it through, I’ll come out stronger, and I’ll look back on those experiences and say, ‘I’ve been able to go through that, I can go through anything.’”

You have no understanding of gaming odds. None. zilch.

Shut up yourself head prefect. You haven’t got a clue about legal process. Flynn was set up; his conviction was based on his confession which was made under duress. Flynn had plenty of ammunition to take to the Judge and it is very unusual for a charge to invite a withdrawal of a guilty plea. If, as is supposed Mueller had something on Flynn’s son which was used as coercion that could have come out too because one thing for sure if an arsehole like mueller had something he would use it eventually.

Now try and say something sensible twit.

Leave aside all the bluster. Flynn pleaded guilty to a charge of da lying to the FBI, whatever the fuck that means. He was pretty much given comfort that with his guilty plea and also giving evidence the the mullet, he will not face jail. Why then would he reverse his plea and take a big chance in an open court with all sorts of obstacles… like ummm.. winning the case.

As I said, you have no understanding of odds and how it pertains to legal jeopardy. None. Zero. Zilch. In fact, it’s embarrassing for you. You’re such an idiot at times.

You’re such an idiot at times.

You’re just projecting head prefect. Flynn was coerced; he didn’t lie; he got some facts wrong and wasn’t given the opportunity to correct his statement which is standard process. Then mueller put the weights on his family after Flynn had gone bankrupt defending against the fbi.

Judge Sullivan gave Flynn the opportunity to retract and present the reasons why he was forced to plead which every one including comey who has boasted about it know to be the case; except you apparently.

    He has missed an opportunity.

Now I know you’re just being a dickhead but stop it because it’s tedious.

    China is worried;

Their words were guarded, their tone sober. At a Politburo meeting to discuss economic plans for 2019, China’s top leaders agreed that they should be ready for problems and must, above all, maintain domestic stability. It was a striking contrast with the same meeting a year earlier. Then the Politburo oozed confidence, concluding that China was the world’s economic engine, with a new level of power.

This nervous, inward turn explains why, after a year of eye-for-eye fighting with America, China is determined to bring the trade war to an end. The view, once commonly heard in Beijing, that it could outlast America in a grinding tariff battle has given way to the realisation that, as the country with the huge trade surplus, China has more to lose upfront. Optimism that the government could fight on two fronts—taming its heavy debt burden at the same time as taking on America—has also cracked. The economic outlook has darkened. Analysts are debating whether the government will, once again, deploy a big fiscal stimulus to prop up growth.

Myrrdin, that stuff in Venezuela is our future. Socialist paradise indeed.

The trash bags here are also in low supply. People dump other people’s trash on the ground, so they can reuse the bags. There are no shampoos, no new clothes, no razors, no toothpaste, no baking soda, no lice sprays, no personal items, no condoms, no tampons, no maxi pads available in any store. Lice and crab infestations are everywhere. In the public toilets, you can see dead ones and some still alive on the toilet seat from the previous person using it.

The trash bags I brought were used to store clothes that you got from pretty much anywhere. You store them in the trash bags for months to allow time for the lice, crabs and the eggs to hatch and die. It’s a must. There were whole families I saw shaved from head to toe, and not because they are getting cancer treatment. It’s because it’s the only way to get rid of the lice and crabs. Hygiene here means having no hair. The good news is that there are no fleas, which used to be the problem before the collapse. The reason is there are no dogs, cats, or small animals left. They’ve all been eaten.

    Horrendous.

The very same Strzok who testified under oath that after being warned TWICE back in 2015 that Hillary’s email server was hacked … he couldn’t remember a thing about how he responded.

    No really.

    https://gohmert.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=398647

Gohmert: You said earlier in this hearing you were concerned about a hostile foreign power affecting the election. Do you recall the former Intelligence Community Inspector General Chuck McCullough having an investigation into an anomaly found on Hillary Clinton’s emails?

Let me refresh your memory. The Intelligence Community Inspector General Chuck McCullough sent his investigator Frank Rucker along with an IGIC attorney Janette McMillan to brief you and Dean Chapelle and two other FBI personnel who I won’t name at this time, about an anomaly they had found on Hillary Clinton’s emails that were going to the private unauthorized server that you were supposed to be investigating?

Strzok: I remember meeting Mr. Rucker on either one or two occasions. I do not recall the specific content or discussions.

Gohmert: Mr. Rucker reported to those of you, the four of you there, in the presence of the ICIG attorney, that they had found this anomaly on Hillary Clinton’s emails going through their private server, and when they had done the forensic analysis, they found that her emails, every single one except four, over 30,000, were going to an address that was not on the distribution list. It was a compartmentalized bit of information that was sending it to an unauthorized source. Do you recall that?

    Strozk: Sir, I don’t.

Gohmert: He went on the explain it. And you didn’t say anything, you thanked him, you shook his hand. The problem is it was going to an unauthorized source that was a foreign entity unrelated to Russia and from what you’ve said here, you did nothing more than nod and shake the man’s hand when you didn’t seem to be all that concerned about our national integrity of our election when it was involving Hillary Clinton. So the forensic examination was done by the ICIG — and they can document that — but you were given that information and you did nothing with it. And one of the things I found most egregious with Mr. Horowitz’s testimony, and — by the way Mr. Horowitz got a call four times from someone wanting to brief him about this, and he never returned the call.

So explain to me again who is the traitor here?

    Symbolism matters Mother Lode.

The thing with symbols is that we can’t be sure that two people put the same associations on any of them.

To the extent they are used communally there will be agreement – birthdays, for example. We all wish people happy birthday. But not all people feel the same about their birthdays. How we dress is another example.

I am hesitant to demand others put the same value on things I do. And I don’t mean value as in just ‘good’ and ‘bad’ – there are myriad dimensions.

I don’t know everything going on in people’s heads when they say ‘Happy holidays’ but can see they mean well. Unless I understand them to be ostentatiously kicking against ‘Merry Christmas’, which seems substantially (rather than symbolically) pathetic. I read more into the symbolism according to what I perceive as their intent.

If I wanted to encourage people to observe the Christian message of Christmas, I would do it not by telling them that they were in or out, but by showing them the richness of it; bringing them in not kicking them out.

I again emphasise I do not intend this as a challenge or stricture upon any one else.

We all know President Trump has his flaws and detractors, which is 90 percent of the media. But for discussion purposes, in what way, shape or form would President Hillary be better?

    What are you talking about?
    It was her turn.
    We needed a woman President.

Christmas is for children. And the joy of seeing the sparkle of acquisitiveness in their beady little eyes.

Please tell that to my wife.

I’d expect nothing less from a devout, observant Muslim cleric.

Christmas celebrates the incarnation of the eternal Son of God, the very idea of which is anathema to Islam. Any Muslim who celebrates Christmas is denying a fundamental Islamic doctrine.

The real question that arises from this is:
Can a Western society tolerate such intolerance in its midst?
Or, is Islam compatible with the West?

Flynn is a fucking idiot; the Judge begs him to withdraw his guilty plea and the dumb fuck refuses.

Flynn is broke. Continuing to fight against the bottomless pockets of the DoJ costs big bucks.

He can’t afford not to plead to a lesser charge and get this over with.

Intentional or not, he has just created the most solid basis for appeal in legal history.

    No.

She is, perhaps, more sentimental than me.

    Most people are.

Flynn is gonna sing like a bird for the next 3 months

The thing that distinguishes the stupidest trolls from the dumbest people ever born is that the stupidest people ever born aren’t as clueless and invariably wrong as the dumbest trolls, like Our Googleory.

    Just watch.

There is something very strange about this man’s behaviour.
Just days ago he was gunning for Mueller over that first missing, then doctored/phony 302.
It looks very much like he was told certain information about himself could become public.

This has horrible echoes of rumours about J Edgar Hoover having cabinets full of sordid information he could use against politicians and senior others in DC.

Now that the Demorats are leading the Deep State, they are comfortable using the tactics they once excoriated.

Our pet fascist is completely comfortable with this kind of blackmail, as well as entrapment being used against enemies of the (Deep) State. Watergate was far worse, don’t even bother to ask him, he will tell you anyway.

    Islam is incompatible with everything.

    Flynn is a registered Democrat.

    Islam is incompatible with everything.

Syria is holding together somehow. Admittedly their structural model is very close to Fascism, but they make it work (not exactly ideal, better than Venezuela).

I grew up saying Happy Christmas and not Merry Christmas. It has stayed with me. My mother taught us that merry was indicative of intoxication. She used to say listen to the Royal Christmas Message, e.g. 2016 and 2017. Always ‘Happy Christmas’.

  225. Helen

Imam Twahidi has no problems with wishing a Merry Christmas

Waleed Aly nodding admiringly on The Project as that Aquaman actor speaks of the importance of his brown-ness for audiences in brown countries. But nothing – not even the colour brown – will ever elevate Aquaman. He always sucked.

Islam is not even compatible with Islam. Just put members of the different sects together, and watch the fireworks!

  228. Roger

    Islam is incompatible with everything.

The fundamental issue the West is yet to face is that Islam is as much about civil polity as it is about religious belief.

    It is a totalitarian system.

It is not the Church of England in exotic, Eastern garb, a quaint artifact from a bygone age of faith that can be safely acknowledged but largely ignored for all practical purposes.

Actually, I think ordinary people realise this more than our politicians and intellectuals.

    Islam is incompatible with everything.

It’s not incompatible with toilet paper! Oh wait a minute, 3 stones….

Ok, it’s incompatible with everything. Even itself.

Once islam has ascendency, the next stop is endless murder and mayhem between various factions of islam aiming to prove who’s the best goat fucker of them all.
