  1. Some History

Once they’ve been shown the red carpet by the legislature, the finger-wagging, moralizing, prohibitionist plops don’t stop…. they never stop. The harebrained “ideas” just keep on coming.

Legislative attempts to restrict access to tobacco usually come with some overheated rhetoric. But nothing comes close to the language in a Hawaii bill that would raise the state’s smoking age to 100, effectively banning the sale of cigarettes.

“The cigarette is considered the deadliest artifact in human history,” declares HB 1509. The product, it continues, has “killed one hundred million people in the twentieth century and is likely to kill one billion people in the twenty-first century,” giving the tobacco industry roughly the same body count as global communism.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Richard Creagan (D–South Kona/Ka’u), aims to halt this menace by raising the legal age for buying cigarettes to 30 in 2020, rising from there to 60 in 2023 and 100 in 2024. Retailers who sell cigarettes to underage Medicare recipients would be subject to fines of $500 per violation.
Cigars and e-cigarettes would be spared from these age restrictions. The bill would not prohibit those over the age of 21, the state’s current smoking age, from merely possessing cigarettes.

Try vaping. It’s good. I’m back on it with 12 mg e-juice.

    Don’t need to anymore.
    Also Vaping looks pretty gay.
I think it’s a great idea and very helpful and not smelly or anything, but it looks very very gay.
The only people who look acceptable doing it are Asians for some reason.
    They look cool.

Nicotine treatments to fight Alzheimer’s, ADHD, and Schizophrenia?

    Just comparing notes with Marilyn.
We first read about the beneficial effects of nicotine in the treatment Alzheimer’s back in 1991 when we were researching alternatives to surgery for her Melanoma.

The Wheels of God grind slowly. But medical science is even slower.

I wonder how long before they “discover” the beneficial effects of psilocybin mushrooms?

A day before former FBI Director Robert Mueller accepted the appointment to be the special counsel probing Russian meddling in the presidential election, President Trump met with him to talk about taking another turn as FBI director.

The interview was first mentioned by Trump friend and Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy in an interview on PBS’ “NewsHour” Monday evening.

Mr. Trump, Ruddy said, “was looking at [Mueller] potentially to become the next FBI director. That hasn’t been published but it’s true.”

Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Tuesday night to reporters that Mr. Trump interviewed Mueller “I believe the day before he was made special counsel.” Sanders said that while Mr. Trump has the right to fire Mueller, he has no intention of doing so.

    Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence

They’ve told you marijuana has many different medical uses. In reality marijuana and THC, its active ingredient, have been shown to work only in a few narrow conditions. They are most commonly prescribed for pain relief. But they are rarely tested against other pain relief drugs like ibuprofen—and in July, a large four-year study of patients with chronic pain in Australia showed cannabis use was associated with greater pain over time.

Even cannabis advocates, like Rob Kampia, the co-founder of the Marijuana Policy Project, acknowledge that they have always viewed medical marijuana laws primarily as a way to protect recreational users.

After an exhaustive review, the National Academy of Medicine found in 2017 that “cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses; the higher the use, the greater the risk.” Also that “regular cannabis use is likely to increase the risk for developing social anxiety disorder.”

research from Finland and Denmark, two countries that track mental illness more comprehensively, shows a significant increase in psychosis since 2000, following an increase in cannabis use. And in September of last year, a large federal survey found a rise in serious mental illness in the United States as well, especially among young adults, the heaviest users of cannabis.

Nicotine treatments to fight Alzheimer’s, ADHD, and Schizophrenia?

Already trialled in Alz. Fail. It is probably preventive but need to start in the 40’s at the latest. It is most certainly preventive in Parkinson’s but the data states only for men(might be a statistical artefact). Men should avoid lots of dairy because milk @>600ml a day may increase the risk.

ADHD is mostly bullshit. It does exist but in very small numbers.

    Schizophrenia

Neurodevelopmental condition. Nicotine use is prevalent possibly as a stress management strategy.

I wonder how long before they “discover” the beneficial effects of psilocybin mushrooms?
    Again.

They already have. There is even a foundation in Britain arguing for the use of psychedelics in various mental health conditions. Microdosing shows promise. Timothy Leary effed everything up, prior to him there was plenty of research then the government got spooked then the general public started believing any old nonsense about street drugs. The most ignorant critics of street drugs are often those who have never used them.

Children who were in what the researchers characterised as a “fragile family”, where parents were cohabiting or there was a lone parent, were twice as likely not to graduate from high school.

Prof McLanahan said the data showed that even a child in a stable single-parent household was likely to do worse on some measures than a child of a married couple.

We have known this for at least the last forty years. Study after study has shown this in both the UK and US. However, the majority of sociologists, policy makers, and the like simply don’t care. They have been pushing forward an agenda of no-fault divorce, mixed-parenting, single parenthood, cohabitation, and same-sex ‘parenting’, and so on, in the face of the evidence that this harms the outcomes for children raised in these circumstances, both as the grow-up and later in life.

Sounds similar to the UK hushed up attacks on girls by those Muslims.

The Wall Street Journal reports the appalling story of Dr. Pat Weber, a pediatrician who apparently preyed on young Indian boys for decades without being held accountable. The story caught my attention because it featured, in a positive role, one of my closest boyhood friends:

At first, officials at the U.S. Indian Health Service overlooked the peculiarities of their unmarried new doctor, including the children’s toys he hoarded in his basement on the reservation. They desperately needed a pediatrician at their hospital in Browning, Mont.

By 1995, after three years, they became convinced Stanley Patrick Weber was a pedophile and pushed for his removal from the government-run hospital.

“You’re going to have to leave,” Randy Rottenbiller, its clinical director at the time, recalled telling the doctor after learning a child patient had stayed the night in his house.

But the Indian Health Service didn’t fire Mr. Weber. Instead, it transferred him to another hospital in Pine Ridge, S.D. He continued treating Native American children there for another 21 years, leaving behind a trail of sexual-assault allegations.

The villains of the story are Dr. Weber, of course, and the Indian Health Service. My old friend, Dr. Mark Butterbrodt, was a fellow pediatrician on the Pine Ridge reservation and tried repeatedly to turn Weber in:

On Dec. 2, 2008, Mark Butterbrodt, another pediatrician at Pine Ridge, contacted the South Dakota medical board alleging that Mr. Weber “selectively cherry-picks young teenage boys in clinic,” according to a copy of the complaint described to the Journal and Frontline. The board investigated. It declined to comment on its findings.

The following year, Dr. Butterbrodt documented the allegations in a letter to his IHS bosses, including Jan Colton, then the hospital’s clinical director. She appointed a panel to investigate. “There were suspicions, but they could find no hard evidence,” said Dr. Colton, a dentist who is now retired.

When the Annunarki created us, our sole purpose was supposed to be to find and collect gold for them. (The Epic of Gilgamesh). Unfortunately we developed interests in other pursuits, which is why their Commanding Officer, Anu, decided to destroy us (the Biblical Flood) and start again.

Lucky for us two of Anu’s subordinate officers, Enlil and Enki, stepped in to save us (Noah’s Ark).

There are various versions, all interesting reading.
But collectively it is supposed to be why we continue to have a desire to accumulate gold.

Try being a sociologist who argues against mothers working up until the last few weeks of pregnancy or single parenting. Anyone else have a problem with ants?

They destroyed the thermostat in my hot water system, only a couple of months after the previous one had broken down and been replaced. I was angry at crappy spare parts but when ripped apart turned out the little black ants had gotten in there and thrown themselves across the live contacts … over and over. Must have taken several hundred ants to burn it out … but they kept going until it was dead.

Mind you, a better quality thermostat would have been sealed so ants can’t get inside.

Maybe you can kill the entire nest by designing a pair or electrical contacts that is just the right distance apart that they keep throwing themselves into the gap.

Most of us know that it may be franking credits now but next it will be slapping extra tax on super over a certain amount

    Death duties will be next.

“It’s just not fair that the big end of town can leave money to their children, when your average wukka just doesn’t have the opportunity.”

Right, they set up trust funds for their progeny while I need my money to live on and what’s left the kids can have when I’m gone but first Chris Bowen or Josh Frydenberg will take their cut. There is nowhere to go but minor parties when the two majors are the same.

there is certainly a high degree of of disenfranchisement from both sides of the political isle.

An Abbott/Latham team, with preferences swapped with AustCONs, SFF, ALA and ON could sweep a lot of outer suburban and regional seats, and do well in the Senate.

AUSTRIA REELING FROM MIGRANTS’ MURDER OF WOMEN
When patriarchy and misogyny among foreigners spawn killings.

In a bloody start to 2019, four women have been brutally murdered in the peaceful Alpine nation of almost 9 million people in just over two weeks, shaking the country to its core.

With an additional two murders of women committed last December, the tally of this “femicide,” as it is being termed, stands at six in a little over five weeks. (There have been no male murder victims.) And this in a country with the very low murder rate of only .66 per 100,000 people! (The United States, by contrast, has 5.35)

What is conspicuous to Austrians about these terrible tragedies is that all the women-killers, except one, are not native Austrians. (Non-Austrians are only 15 per cent of the population.) Another visible factor is most murders were committed by partners or ex-partners of women who were about to leave, or had left, relationships with their killers.

“It is striking that many foreigners and asylum seekers are found over proportionally among the suspects. That suggests that this group is particularly misogynistic and patriarchist oriented,” said social scientist Birgitt Haller of the Institute for Conflict Research in Vienna.

    ‘Cattle are still dying today’

Grazier William McMillan from Mt Roseby Station, 65 kilometres north of Cloncurry, said cattle are stuck on dry patches of ground between the water, with minimal feed.

“The cattle are that buggered when you fly up to them in a helicopter they don’t even move, they’re just exhausted from standing in the mud and cold … 11 days straight now,” Mr McMillan said.

This is the way Australia works. The chances of native animals, reptiles and birds surviving in the worst hit parts is minimal, but the feed that grows in response to the storms will see a breeding frenzy of replacements.

Funny enough, not a lot of animal activists making much effort over the millions of domestic and native creatures dying even now as a result of the queensland floods.

A new Democratic Congress, a lost shutdown battle, a criminal investigation closing in on his inner circle — by all accounts, many would think that President Donald Trump is on a clear path to defeat in the next presidential election. But if you look at the massive organization his campaign is building online, it’s Trump who’s already winning 2020.

As someone who has run Democratic communications and media programs that focus on reaching and mobilizing voters online, what Trump has been able to build for his reelection campaign terrifies me. It has also made me a firm believer that unless Democrats recognize our own strategic shortcomings and tactical disadvantages, we may never win back the White House or build long-term progressive power.

Tara McGowan is the founder and CEO of ACRONYM, a progressive c4 organization that ran over $15 million in digital programs to help elect more than 65 Democrats last cycle.

    Hey JC.

This is not your manhattan place, is it?

This apartment is very very nice.

The timber floors went in last week. Looking good for a latish May JC decampment to the US. But get this, wifey’s first family cohort is scheduled to use the place in early June, which is when we’re in Italy. Theoretically, if the place isn’t finished, wifey’s family will be “moving in” before we do. I’m not kidding. I think, the next time I’m on earth I will be marrying an only child sheila. This 5 sisters bullshit isn’t my thing.

Just to stir the pot a bit.

“Although widely used in policy debates, the literature on children’s outcomes in same-sex families has mostly relied on small selective samples or on samples based on cross-sectional survey data. This led to a lack of statistical power, misclassification of same-sex couples, and the inability to separate children born in same-sex families from children of divorce. We address these issues by using unique administrative panel data from the Netherlands: the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in the world. The results indicate that children raised by same-sex couples perform better than children raised by opposite-sex couples in both primary and secondary education. Our findings are robust to the use of Coarsened Exact Matching to improve covariate balance and to reduce model dependency. Further analyses using a novel bounding estimator suggest that the selection on unobserved characteristics would have to be at more than two and a half times higher than the selection on observed characteristics to render the estimates insignificant. Overall, children raised by same-sex couples appear to perform at least as well as children raised by opposite-sex couples in school.

Here is the link to the paper.

The good thing about NYC is that the great service you can get, but it comes at a price. 🙂

We decided to get everything done – down to the designer even buy the kitchenware such as cutlery and saucepans. etc. The sheets, blankets, towels etc… all done. We’re moving in and the place will be ready for everything. Sleeping, cooking, watching tv, internet connection so as not waste anytime for Cat stoushes 🙂

Nearly all the work is being done by the designer/architect/s office and we’ve had little to no input other than wifey choosing the furniture with them literally over the phone supported by their Fedex’ed suggestions.

We decided to do it this way, so we get a huge surprise when we arrive. I hope it’s not a shock though. 🙂

Too true John C. This year has been a real monsoon, but following on the heels of drought it’s been particularly damaging. Stock already in poor condition are particularly vulnerable, pneumonia being just one risk, always assuming they don’t drown in the initial flood, or starve when huddled together on small islands of slightly higher ground.

Much of the rest of Qld is still in drought though. Even our own area here in CQ which was in “green drought” recently (enough rain to keep the grass green, but not enough to run creeks or fill dams), is now turning grey and dead. I’m now carting water for my horses, but thankfully have no cattle to lose. Decent rain still seems to be a fair way off for us here.

It’s the 15 floor, so you can still hear the city din. The really pleasant NYC noise are the rubbish trucks around 4 in the morning. They were especially built to make to loudest racket and heavy clunking so as to wake everyone up. It’s a feature.

Never been so high there and it’s on a good corner too with plenty of views from both sides. One side looks north (uptown) and the other towards the East river…. We can’t see the river though.

Newspoll: Coalition staring at bruising poll defeat

The Coalition has held on to the electoral gains made over summer but still remains on course for a significant election defeat despite a lift in Scott Morrison’s approval ratings.

An exclusive Newspoll to be published in The Australian tomorrow shows Labor retaining a commanding lead over the Coalition with a two-party preferred vote of 53/47.

As both parties prepare for a pitched battle over asylum seekers and the economy when Parliament returns this Tuesday, Mr Morrison has maintained his lead over Bill Shorten as the preferred prime minister after widening the gap two points to 44/35 in the latest fortnightly poll.

The Liberal Party leader’s approval ratings have also lifted with a three point upswing to 43 per cent and a drop of two points in those dissatisfied with his performance to 45 per cent.

    From the Oz.

Errr….they might have a few more choices than that. Flee the country or pay the bribes come immediately to mind. I’m sure there are more. Depends on the assets.

  229. MatrixTransform

err, you know. not all private companies are high-flying well connected oligarchs?
Some, their assets pretty much amount to their house, their tools and their two-hands.
