Physicist John Reid has a new post at http://blackjay.net
    Intro;

    Fluid Ideas

    John Reid

Over the last four centuries the Newtonian description of the physical world in terms of differential equations has been brilliantly successful. It began with precise and accurate descriptions of the motion of the planets and their satellites and found further application in the design of the machinery which became the basis of industrial civilization. At first General Relativity appeared to undermine Newton’s ideas, but in effect it amounted to only a minor refinement of the Newtonian system.

A more profound threat to the Newtonian hegemony was the quantum theory which followed the “Ultraviolet Catastrophe”: the realization that some physical quantities are granular and require a radically different approach. At about the same time, the Second Law of Thermodynamics was proposed leading to the concept of entropy which describes how matter and energy are ordered and which requires the Universe be granular rather than continuous.

Newton’s ideas were successful when applied to the dynamics of planetary motions because friction and turbulence are negligibly small at planetary scales. Planetary motions are, to all intents and purposes, deterministic and amenable to a description in terms of differential calculus. Machinery is intentionally designed to minimise friction and turbulence and to be amenable to a deterministic description. This even applies to semi-conductor design where so called “race conditions” are eliminated in order to preclude any possibility of stochastic behaviour in electronic components.

But it is not true of fluids. Stochastic behaviour in the form of turbulence clearly plays a major role in the dynamics of fluids. The Navier–Stokes equations, which describe fluids in purely Newtonian terms, fail in high Reynolds Number regimes where turbulence is generated. This is the “Fluid Catastrophe”. In effect the Quantum Revolution bypassed Fluid Dynamics, whose practitioners still cling to the 19th century idea of the continuum.

The belief that any real fluid can only be dealt with as a deterministic, Newtonian continuum has had a stifling effect on development. Fluid Dynamics has become the province of Applied Mathematicians who are skilled in the manipulation of partial differential equations but in very little else. They are not trained to perform experiments. They do not have an empirical, “Popperian” outlook. They are mathematical Rationalists who only pay lip service to the scientific method. They are not really scientists at all but they they think they are.

Fluid dynamicists might argue that there is no alternative, that only a Newtonian approach to fluids will work. The way to break the stranglehold of determinism is to regard the mathematical expressions of physical laws, such as the Navier–Stokes equations, not as immutable, deterministic Laws but, rather, as constraints. The future state of a fluid is then predicted as that state which maximises the entropy within constraints determined by conservation of mass, momentum and energy. Because of our imperfect knowledge of the initial boundary conditions and the existence of bifurcation points in the evolving trajectory of the system, future states can never be known with certainty but, rather, a most likely state is predicted and its variance estimated. Russian physicists and mathematicians such as Kolmogorov, Monin, Obukhov and Kitaigorodskii laid the groundwork for this approach, but their work has been overshadowed by the advent of the digital computer which favoured fully deterministic numerical models. These now dominate the discipline. The current fad for running “ensembles” of deterministic models with randomized boundary conditions is naive and simplistic. Internally such models are kept stable only by means of unrealistic parameter values and smoothed topography and bathymetry. Garbage in, garbage out.

Science is not a collection of given“truths” like religion; it is a work in progress. This applies as much to Fluid Dynamics as to any other branch of science. What is needed is for Fluid Dynamics to become, once again, the empirical science that flowered in the 19th century. A simple experient with a cubic metre wax block could test the reality of the liquid-in-solid convection. If successful, new insights into Mantle dynamics would be gained. The wave-wave interaction algorithms, presently used in numerical wave models, were initially borrowed, second-hand, from Quantum Mechanics. This accounts for the poor performance of these models. What is needed are empirical studies of those wave-wave interactions which really do occur among gravity waves on a fluid surface and which involve entropy increases due to wave-breaking. Initially such studies could be carried out with the wave tanks and hydraulic basins presently used by naval architects. This would open a new field similar to the field of sub-atomic particle interactions which followed the development of the cyclotron. These experiments are not expensive; they are within the reach of a small university department.

It is time for Fluid Dynamics to recognize its “catastrophe”, to put its house in order and to become an empirical science once again. Until that happens, its predictions of future states of the Earth’s atmosphere must be taken with a large grain of salt.

There’s more. I think he is on the right track.

  11. C.L.

We’re told he addressed everyone on set, saying …”I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls. I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you, you are my family. I swear to God, I did not do this.

The innumerable challenges of raising a feminist boy

My husband and I have been more than just conscious about raising a feminist boy, we have been deliberate. Where possible we buy clothes that are gender neutral, regularly shopping in the girls’ clothing section as well as the boys.

Our AFL obsessed kid is encouraged to watch the women’s matches as well as the men’s and loves to put on a tutu for “twirling”. I change the genders of characters in songs like Five Cheeky Monkeys, so that it is daddy who calls the doctor and the doctor is a woman.

We’ve taught Rafi to tidy up after himself, rather than expecting his parents to do it. Even though he is abominably ineffective, I still feel a flush of pride when he attempts to wipe up his messy placemat after dinner and puts his bowl in the sink.

He thinks helping me take washing off the line is fun and asks inquisitively about how daddy’s iron works. I hope this early modelling sticks and that he never assumes it is the lot of women to clean and take care of him.

Yet more and more, I cannot seem to shut out the avalanche of influence that exists beyond the walls of our home. Television, child care, kids at the park, neighbours, extended family and friends are unwittingly starting to sway the views and expectations of my son.

Gender stereotypes become entrenched and along with them, Rafi’s world begins to narrow. Like all three-year-old kids he parrots back what his parents teach him. My son calls himself a feminist, but his actions don’t reflect that in the way they used to.

Rafi moved child care centres a few months back and since then the names of the kids he plays with are exclusively male. His interest in girl playmates has all but disappeared. It breaks my heart. He is no longer keen on dressing up or playing house. It’s all dinosaurs and footy and Transformers and outer space.

Now, of course, none of these things are inherently bad and I want to encourage his passions whatever they might be. Yet, I question how many of Rafi’s interests are genuinely his own and how much is being imposed by the structures and settings around him. As his parents, we worked hard to free him from those gendered confines and yet as he grows up it seems all but impossible to maintain.

Gender awareness begins early. By the age of two-and-a-half a child can accurately identify a person’s sex. In the following three years of life this consciousness converts into something more; a set of expectations, assumptions and rules.

My son is living through that critical period right now. He is still in the first five years of life, the time when 90 per cent of his brain development will occur. His values, his beliefs and his view of the world is being shaped right in front of my eyes and I fear for what they will be.

I want to raise a feminist for several reasons; for the betterment of our community, for my own peace of mind. But most importantly? I want to raise a feminist to help secure my son’s own happiness. I am determined that Rafi will be comfortable in his own skin and utilise his emotional intelligence rather than stuffing his feelings down where they can’t be seen. I want him to be brave and strong but also vulnerable, kind and gentle. I will tell him again and again not to whine but always validate his willingness to cry if he’s hurting.

In the past decade we’ve made great strides in pushing back against the stereotyping of little girls. Shops are full of t-shirts bearing slogans like “The future is female”, and “Call me brave not beautiful”. Girls are encouraged to pursue their dreams no matter what, told they can be whatever they wish and dress as they choose. We’ve banned “bossy”. We’ve embraced the assertiveness of the girl child and learned to applaud it.

What we haven’t done is expand the scope of possibility in the same way for boys. Their world of opportunity is still small. It’s because as a community we still consider traditionally male behaviours and interests as culturally superior. The status and wealth associated with “feminine” roles and jobs remains lesser. This means when girls push into the typically male domain, it is considered ambitious and exciting. When boys do the same, they’re diminishing themselves.

It’s worthy of commendation that a girl says she wants to be prime minister but there isn’t the same applause for a boy who wants to be a nurse. Breaking the mould is hard no matter what and yet, we don’t celebrate boys who break gender stereotypes.

My son’s possibilities remain stagnant while his girl peers are expanding – and that hurts everyone. As Gloria Steinem once said, “I’m glad we’ve begun to raise our daughters more like our sons, but it will never work until we raise our sons more like our daughters”.

It is with frustration but also resignation that I’ve come to realise my greatest ally in the feminist fight for my son’s future … is a man. It’s the man who lives in my house. The truth is that I can speak about equality until my tongue falls out but right now? It’s my husband’s words that will have the greatest impact on the shared feminist project that is our kid.

For better or for worse, I am my son’s carer, nurturer, enforcer, teacher, devoted partner in puzzle solving and dressing up – but at this particular moment in time I am not his chief role model. At three years old he isn’t ready to grasp the complexities of gender norms and stereotypes. His hero is his dad and that is who he wants to grow up and be just like. It pains me to write those words. Yet at the same time, I pat myself on the back because I couldn’t have chosen a better role model to marry.

Daddy is proving that girls are cool, that they’re worthy of admiration, aspiration and imitation – and that pretending means you can be whoever or whatever you wish.

Feminist fathers are going to help save us, and the day.

Bishops at Vatican summit cannot ignore homosexual roots of abuse crisis

Let it be said emphatically that it is morally wrong to blame all gay priests or to bully someone who is gay, be he a priest or a plumber. It is also wrong to call on all gay priests to resign: such a sweeping recommendation is patently unfair to those gay priests who have never violated anyone.

However, it is not helpful to the cause of eradicating the problem of sexual abuse in the priesthood to dismiss a conversation about the obvious. We can begin by talking honestly about who the victims are.

Notice that the New York Times says there is no connection between homosexuality and abusing “children.” This is a common way of framing the issue, and it is a deceitful one. Most of the victims were adolescents, not children. In other words, the problem is not pedophilia.

We know from one report after another, in both this country and abroad, that approximately 80 percent of the victims are both male and postpubescent. Ergo, the issue is homosexuality. This does not mean that homosexuality, per se, causes someone to be a predator (Cupich is technically right about that), but it does say that homosexuals are disproportionately represented in the sexual abuse of minors. We cannot ignore this reality.

    [……]

Finally, every honest observer who has examined this subject knows there is a homosexual subculture in the Church. Two months ago, Pope Francis said “homosexuality is fashionable and that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church.” Previously, he spoke about the “gay lobby” in the Church. Moreover, a 2016 decree on training for priests spoke about the “gay culture.” Also, it was Father Andrew Greeley who used the term “lavender mafia.”

Pope says on eve of abuse summit: Those who spend lives accusing Church are ‘relatives of the devil’

Trees groing near a coal fired power station grow as much as three times faster than trees growing elsewhere.

That’s a good link, very interesting.

It’d be a funny pollutant that made trees grow better.

Well Nitrate and Phosphates are great for trees, but if you eat the fertilizer it won’t do you much good. It’s entirely a matter of suitable application. Carbon particulates are unpleasant for humans if you have to breath them in; but in the bigger scheme of things aren’t going to do any harm if spread over a large forest area.

You are raising an effeminate boy.

She’s doing her best. I doubt if it will work. Her boy is programmed by nature to be male, and it works in around 98% of cases. He may spend his adolescence even more confused than usual, but eventually he will likely figure out his mother was a brainwashed fool.

The plantations in both locations had been established for 10 years, would have experienced a similar climate history, and the soil at the 15 km distant location looked quite rich compared to the soil near the power station.

It would be great if those two soils could be sent to a lab for analysis. Sometimes what looks rich is deficient in something-or-other. Soils ain’t soils, Sol.

I would be concerned about mercury getting on things near the coal-fired plant. But you would expect superior growth. Trees capturing minerals in the air. Carbon getting in the ground. Life following that carbon into the ground. Since microscopic carbon produces small creature apartments. Higher CO2 levels in the air meaning greater plant fertilization. Higher CO2 means plants do better on less water ….. their leaf stigmata not opening as much. Needing to transpire less water.

But the kids doing less well because of the mercury. Back in the day when only vaccinated kids got autism, the exception was those kids who lived near coal fired plants. Now there are more compounding factors and its harder to be doctrinaire about the vaccine thing.

The innumerable challenges of raising a feminist boy

You can’t raise a feminist boy. Try to smother his gender, and you will merely raise an extremely confused boy; a timid and whiney boy who thinks there is something fundamentally wrong in his life And he’d be right.

With luck, he’ll work out soon enough that he and his dad (lucky to have one) are different from his mum in some very interesting physical ways. As he grows up in the world he will see that those ways are important for a lot of things even though he is told they are not. After pre-school he will most likely be attracted, as is normal developmentally, to mixing more with others boys, people who have bodies like his, and he will share their interests in rougher play and big action ‘projects’ which largely will not interest the girls; they too have their own developmental tracks involving a lot of talking and assessment. These forms of gendered development are set by nature, not culture; only the artefacts (toys) used differ. Evolution has ensured that this is so, or our ‘feminist’ female and her pandering male would not have produced little Funny Name at all by the amusing process that New Zealanders call six.

When puberty hits like a ton of bricks, girls will suddenly become interesting again to our little chap. And big surprise, he will notice that he is starting to become interesting to the girls. Thus he, and the girls, will spend a lot of time in front of the mirror looking at their faces, wondering about it all. (In one study, adolescents were the only tested individuals who readily identified themselves in a special upside-down mirror; they knew their physical features through and through; most likely because at this stage in their development adolescents are more prone than adults to be besotted with working out who and what they are becoming, anguishing for hours about the various hopes and interactions they are currently testing in preparation for adulthood.)

With good luck, and some parental despair at the abject failure of their project, this is what will happen to little Funny Name too. If the luck is bad, little Funny Name will be too confused to cope with it all, especially if the official school visiting Gimp gets hold of his adolescent head and fills it with garbage about what is happening, fully supported by his admiring parents, who are already organizing his transition. Good luck from me in that case, little funny name. You are going to need it, with parents like yours.

Supporters of Anjem Choudary’s al-Muhajiroun group carried out atrocities including the London Bridge attack, 7/7 London bombings and murder of Lee Rigby, and many have fought for Isis, al-Qaeda and the Taliban abroad.

Choudary is among several activists released from prison in the past six months, as well as men who canvassed support for Isis on Oxford Street and members of a terror cell that plotted to bomb the London Stock Exchange in 2010.

Federal prosecutors broke law in Jeffrey Epstein case, judge rules

Federal prosecutors, under former Miami U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, broke the law when they concealed a plea agreement from more than 30 underage victims who had been s3xually abused by wealthy New York hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

While the decision marks a victory for crime victims, the federal judge, Kenneth A. Marra, stopped short of overturning Epstein’s plea deal, or issuing an order resolving the case. He instead gave federal prosecutors 15 days to confer with Epstein’s victims and their attorneys to come up with a settlement. The victims did not seek money or damages as part of the suit.

It’s not clear whether the victims, now in their late 20s and early 30s, can, as part of the settlement, demand that the government prosecute Epstein. But others are calling on the Justice Department to take a new look at the case in the wake of the judge’s ruling.

“As a legal matter, the non-prosecution agreement entered into by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida does not bind other U.S. Attorneys in other districts. They are free, if they conclude it is appropriate to do so, to bring criminal actions against Mr. Epstein and his co-conspirators,’’ said lawyer David Boies, representing two of Epstein’s victims who claim they were trafficked by Epstein in New York and other areas of the country.

For years now, the findings of Ostrer and several other scientists have stood virtually unchallenged on the genetics of J00ws and the story they tell of the common Middle East origins shared by many J00wish populations worldwide. Armadillo said last night they should turn the Tower of London back to it was.

LGBT+ histories can be found in the stories of all our palaces. However, same-sex love and desire and non-binary gender identities have been understood in different ways throughout history. Our modern understanding of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans identities are very recent, dating from the late 19th Century and continuing to develop up to the present day.
When we try to look for these identities in the past we struggle, but if we look for love, desire, and the way people presented themselves, we find a rich history everywhere. People in the past saw sexuality as something you did, rather than something you were. Stories abound of people dressing and living their lives in ways that crossed the gender boundary of male and female. We sometimes use a ‘+’ as part of ‘LGBT+’ or the word ‘queer’ to represent the many ways people lived their lives.

The Smollett Family Business: Acting and Activism

The members of the Smollett clan have made good on their childhood promise. Mr. Smollett, 32, is a singer and a breakout star of the hit drama “Empire,” in which he plays Jamal, the most talented member of the Lyon hip-hop dynasty. Ms. Smollett-Bell, 29, who made her mark as an actress by the age of 10, with the 1997 film “Eve’s Bayou,” is one of the leads in “Underground,” a new WGN America show about a group of slaves who try to escape from their Georgia plantation; her brother guest-stars. Though it’s their first project together in 20 years, it’s clear that the more creative freedom they have, the more their tastes will converge.

The Smolletts have also been outspoken politically and, since their school years, devoted to causes like H.I.V./AIDS prevention and ending apartheid. They were raised in the orbit of the Black Panthers and, lately, have lent their voices to the Black Lives Matter movement. Their trajectory, from child stars to successful adults, is born of their family and its history of activism.

“Their sense of justice is very strong, and it permeates everything that they do,” said Alfre Woodard, who has known Jussie and Jurnee since they were children; they worked with her at the nonprofit Artists for a New South Africa. “They’re like a model sibling unit. They look out for each other, all the time. And they all reach across and say, ‘O.K., I got my foot in this door; here, grab my hand, we’re going in together.’”

Raised on a diet of classic films (they’ll gladly quote the 1945 version of “Mildred Pierce”), Jussie and Jurnee still count their mother, Janet Smollett, as their only acting coach. An African-American from New Orleans, Ms. Smollett met their father, Joel Smollett Sr., a Russian-Polish Jew, in the Bay Area, where they campaigned for civil rights. “My mom was in the movement with Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, and one of her first mentors was Julian Bond,” Mr. Smollett said of the Black Panther founders and the civil rights leader. “To this day, Angela Davis is one of her dearest friends. We’ve spent Mother’s Day with Angela.”

Two friends are interrupting their honeymoon to get married next month, and I have been asked to give advice on the wording of the ceremony. During this, I saw the suggestions of the celebrant. They were appalling hippie drivel and an embarrassment to all. The girl is doing it herself from scratch and her ideas are sensible, except for a long excerpt from a certain literary work at the beginning, and the idea of a poem at the end. The actual vows are sensible. Since they are both atheists, this isn’t going to be a church wedding, the Catholic parents of the bride notwithstanding.

I had a look at the C of E service which is what I had at my first marriage, and it’s not bad, but when you take out the goddy bits it’s fairly close to what she plans. The new modern language C of E service is awful.

Weddings are strange things. A couple make promises to each other in public, and that’s a serious matter in our culture. And yet there’s something joyous and happy about the connection with the future in there too. It ought to involve a contradiction between the solemn and the happy, yet it doesn’t.

I’ll let you have Dawkins as an atheist. He’s pretty genuine. He believes in truth, but not in God. There’s a serious lack of evidence there, which is a worry for atheists. AFLX is further testament to the Footy Wreckers’ vaulting ambitions and unbroken record of failure. They plant teams in places where wogball and rugby rule the roost and squander gazillions while denying Tassie a team of its own. Tassie, where Peter Hudson, Baldock and scores of other greats have torn themselves away from their sister long enough to make a name for themselves!

Obviously, AFLX is designed to wean ignorant foreigners off soccer and conquer the world. As if.

Delusional to the nth degree, they just don’t get that foreigners get off on watching girlymen writhing whenever they break a nail. When that gets boring they can jam flares in each others’ eyes, wreck the stands and complain on SBS how wrong it is that no one likes surly wogs.

He is still dealing with the grief of leaving them behind with their grandparents, on a one-way trip to the same euthanasia clinic where Australian scientist David Goodall ended his life last year.

For Goodall, at the age of 104, it was all about choice. He was tired, he said, of being old. He simply did not want to go on, having outlived so many of his friends and family members. He was choosing to die on his terms.

And so it will be for Troy when he keeps his own appointment with death, because for him, the alternative is unfathomable.

He admits to a strange mix of gratitude, sadness and an inevitable fear about presenting his arm to Swiss doctors who will administer the lethal injection.

So he doesn’t really want to die and he’s going to die alone because no one is allowed to touch him when he takes his own life. What a sad sad fucking idiot. Too proud to admit he is wrong and no way will that evil ghoul Nitschke tell him to go home. Hitler really did win the war.
