Concrete: the most destructive material on Earth

But concreters are just returning the Earth to its previous pristine state!
    Concrete is calcium silicate.
Calcium silicate was originally rocks, until da ebil CO2 came along and ate it.
A process which is called ‘weathering’.
That turned the rocks into calcium carbonate and quartz.
    Quartz is sand.
So all we are doing is burning the CO2 out of the calcium carbonate and combining it with sand to make calcium silicate again.
I don’t know how Greens can complain when we are rebuilding Gaia’s corroded bones.

NSW election: Labor to tax luxury cars, yachts for $2.8b nurse plan
Rose Brennan & Derrick Krusche, The Daily Telegraph

Owners of luxury boats and cars will be slugged with a new wealth tax to fund more midwives and nurses in public hospitals, if Labor is elected next month.

But ALP leader Michael Daley admitted his plan to hire 5500 extra midwives and nurses would cost about $500 million over four years — way more than the $240 million over three years that the cash grab would raise.

Shadow Treasurer Ryan Park insisted the tax on luxury yachts and cars would go “very close” to covering the cost of the extra nurses despite the $260 million shortfall.

“This is a modest amount for those in the community who can afford to cruise around in a luxury yacht or drive a Maserati. They’re going to be asked to pay a little bit more to have a world class health system,” Mr Park said.

Labor promised the new staff would bolster emergency, maternity, medical and surgical and paediatric services. The ratios range from one nurse for every three patients in post-natal wards to every seven patients in medical and surgical wards.

Hehe, the left tried to do a Weekend at Bernie’s on the 9th Court of Appeals and got sprung!

Supreme Court says vote of dead ‘progressive icon’ judge does not count

Judge Stephen Reinhardt, who was seen as a progressive icon on the bench, heard the dispute and participated in a preliminary vote. The appeals court then issued an opinion in his name nine days after he passed away in March 2018.

But the high court, vacating the decision of a federal appeals court, said Monday that “federal judges are appointed for life, not for eternity.”

The identity of Lawyer X, the barrister at the centre of Australia’s biggest legal scandal, will be revealed on this website at 4.15pm on Friday.

After the Court of Appeal last Thursday rejected a Victoria Police bid to keep Lawyer X’s name and image under wraps, the force had until yesterday to pursue further action in the High Court to keep her identity secret.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton decided not to go ahead. It ends a five-year legal battle for the truth.

Violent Injury Rates Among Schoolchildren Alarmingly High, Study Reveals

Research shows that one in three tenth graders has suffered an injury from a gunshot, stabbing, or other assault-related incident.
HOUSTON — A shocking study claims that about one in every six fifth graders in the United States has suffered a violent injury — a proportion that increases as the children get older.

Researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston turned to data on 4,300 children when they were in fifth, seventh, and tenth grade. The children were students at public schools in three major U.S. communities: Houston, Los Angeles County, and Birmingham, Alabama. The children in the study were questioned over time to determine the numbers and the types of injury.

Like many on Catallaxy, we did watch Q & A last night, and like many, it was the first time in ages we had tuned into the ABC. We did so in the vain hope that a surge in viewers may give them pause to think about audiences long lost, and to begin to change their ways. Well, we did it anyway, and strangely interesting it was. Hairy and I felt much as is displayed on the relevant Q & A thread. The show was a stacked deck in which many a gotcha and near gotcha was attempted and failed. Milo didn’t do well in the clip they’d extracted from him to critique JP. Petersen was in top form and deftly fielded such obvious furphys. He does a very good line in it’s none of your business, and certainly put a few in their place for incivility and/or obscurantist questioning. Mostly he maintained a controlled and intellectual set of responses. The vibe between him and the ex-military ex-man Catherine McGregor, who gave our own areff a serve in absentia, was obvious, although the vibe was not over that. Like Petersen himself, McGregor demonstrated a history of intellectual questing and personal anguish. They met at an intellectual level far above the other commenters. A number of people ‘came out’ in various interesting ways on the program regarding their religious beliefs, including JP re his reticence to do so. It was clearly a ‘best behaviour’ night. Van Badham was hyper-excitable and the Liberal man (name escapes me; no time now to check) was at least sensible and direct, a thoroughly ‘normal’ father and man. Sitting next to the breathlessly excitable Van Badham he provided a refreshing quietude, not the fake one provided by the Labor politician on his other side.

    https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/feb/25/concrete-is-tipping-us-into-climate-catastrophe-its-payback-time-cement-tax

Nearly 6% of all UK greenhouse gas emissions, and up to 8% of the world’s, are now sourced from cement production. If it were a country, the cement industry would be the third largest in the world, its emissions behind only China and the US.

Industry leaders are now embarrassed, aware that they are in danger of being financially penalised and tarred as climate laggards who refuse to change in the face of the climate emergency. They well know that not only is it quite possible to build most structures safely without cement, but their own research has shown that green, cement-like products using recycled byproducts which are just as strong can be made from other industries, such as steel slag, fly ash from coal-fired facilities or some types of clay.

Your evangelistic lefty believes (as in has faith) that they can cross a ravine by nailing a few planks end to end and, when it is insufficient to span the gap, they can go back and take the first planks and hammer them onto the end. Any objection is small mindedness.

Persons with Histrionic Personality Disorder* are characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking. Their lives are full of drama (so-called “drama queens”). They are uncomfortable in situations where they are not the center of attention.

People with this disorder are often quite flirtatious or seductive, and like to dress in a manner that draws attention to them.

They can be flamboyant and theatrical, exhibiting an exaggerated degree of emotional expression.

Yet simultaneously, their emotional expression is vague, shallow, and lacking in detail. This gives them the appearance of being disingenuous and insincere.

Moreover, the drama and exaggerated emotional expression often embarrasses friends and acquaintances as they may embrace even casual acquaintances with excessive ardor, or may sob uncontrollably over some minor sentimentality.

People with Histrionic Personality Disorder can appear flighty and fickle. Their behavioral style often gets in the way of truly intimate relationships, but it is also the case that they are uncomfortable being alone.

They tend to feel depressed when they are not the center of attention. When they are in relationships, they often imagine relationships to be more intimate in nature than they actually are.

People with Histrionic Personality Disorder tend to be suggestible; that is, they are easily influenced by other people’s suggestions and opinions. A literary character that exemplifies the Histrionic Personality
Disorder is the character of Blanche DuBois in Tennessee William’s classic play, “Streetcar Named Desire.”

Perhaps – but then just have it registered in QLD.

Here is the process: First make an announcement that appeals to the SJW’s and, completely as an afterthought, gives them money to fund bribes to client demographics. Note that in this scheme the money is spent before it is even collected.

Then, once in government, introduce legislation mandating all kind of onerous compliance and fees.

Then they discover it did not make the amount they hoped for – partly because their calculations were based on false assumptions about the extent of boat ownership and because they thought that if you levy a tax people will line up to pay the maximum amount and never look for ways to minimise their tax obligation or even sell their boats – they will be deer trapped in the headlights.

Therefore, every instance where a person is not paying maximum taxation will be labeled a subsidy, and/or loophole demanding fresh action.

More regulations follow, which make it all more complicated for boat owners and hopelessly bewildering for bureaucrats which encourage more careful searching by boat owners for ways to minimise their obligations. But there will be a slight increase in revenue.

This will repeat and repeat until somewhere close to the original amount is raised, but the legislation is ten times more voluminous and a hundred times more onerous than originally envisioned.

    Then boat ownership will decline.

The government will blame wealthy people.

Milo didn’t do well in the clip they’d extracted from him to critique JP. Petersen was in top form and deftly fielded such obvious furphys.

Petersen was terrible re Kavanaugh. And his position re personal pronouns is absurd and a losing strategy. If you call MacGregor ‘she’ and ‘Ms’ then you already cede the field to transgenderism.

The practical problem is, how do you deal with the insane in a social situation? Do you maintain the civil conventions and pretend to treat them as equals? Or do you tell them they are crazy? Which is the kind thing to do? Which is the prudent thing to do? If, like Peterson, you are surrounded by a variety of different derangements, how do you treat them? Peterson seems to think sticking to the civil protocols and treating them, in the main, as sane adults who have got a few things wrong, is the way to go.

Given that in many cases the lunatics are in charge of the aylum, this may be the prudent response.

    Great piece –

    Letter to Trump –

‘You’re fired!’ America has already terminated Trump
    Robert Reich

    Dear Mr President,
While many of us disagree on ideology and values, we agree on practical things like obeying the constitution and not letting big corporations and the wealthy run everything.
Your 35-day government shutdown was a senseless abuse of power. So too your “national emergency” to build your wall with money Congress refused to appropriate.
When you passed your tax bill you promised our paychecks would rise by an average of $4,000 but we never got the raise. Our employers used the tax savings to buy back their shares of stock and give themselves raises instead.
Then you fooled us into thinking we were getting a cut by lowering the amounts withheld from our 2018 paychecks. We know that now because we’re getting smaller tax refunds.
At the same time, many big corporations aren’t paying a dime in taxes. Worse yet, they’re getting refunds.
For example, GM is paying zilch and claiming a $104m refund on $11.8bn of profits. Amazon is paying no taxes and claiming a $129m refund on profits of $11.2bn. (This is after New York offered it $3bn to put its second headquarters there.)
They aren’t breaking any tax laws or regulations. That’s because they made the tax laws and regulations. You gave them a free hand.
You’re supposed to be working for us, not for giant corporations. But they’re doing better than ever, as are their top executives and biggest investors. Yet nothing has trickled down. We’re getting shafted.
Which is why more than 75% of us (including 45% who call ourselves Republicans) support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed 70% tax on dollars earned in excess of $10m a year.
And over 60% of us support Elizabeth Warren’s proposed 2% annual tax on households with a net worth of $50m or more.
You’ve also shown you don’t have a clue about healthcare. You promised us something better than the Affordable Care Act but all you’ve done is whittle it back.
A big reason we gave Democrats control of the House last November was your threat to eliminate protection for people with pre-existing conditions.
Are you even aware that 70% of us now favor Medicare for all?
Most of us don’t pay much attention to national policy but we pay a lot of attention to home economics. You’ve made our own home economics worse.
We’ll give you official notice you’re fired on 3 November 2020, if not before. Until then, you can keep the house and perks, but you’re toast.
    Respectfully,
    America.

The lawsuit alleges the encounter occurred inside a campaign RV before a rally on Aug. 24, 2016. While leaving a meeting in the vehicle, Mr Trump gripped Ms Johnson by the hand and leaned in so close that she felt his breath, the lawsuit says.

Ms Johnson is seeking financial damages and a court order to prohibit Mr Trump “from grabbing, kissing or otherwise assaulting or harassing women without prior express consent.”

The lawsuit said Ms Johnson also experienced discrimination as one of the campaign’s few female and African-American staff members. She earned less than her colleagues and experienced “a larger culture of racist and sexist behaviour,” the lawsuit said.

Hells P e l l found guilty at the second trial.

Because nothing says justice like 20+ year old allegations recovered after basically advertising for payout claimants through the drugged and desperate…

Robert Richter QC, when asked by journalists if he would appeal, responded: “Absolutely.”

P el l will now almost certainly face jail time when he returns to court on Wednesday for his sentencing.

The case against P e ll centred around events of more than 22 years ago.

The jury found that in the second half of December 1996, while he was archbishop of Melbourne, P e ll walked in on two 13-year-old choirboys after a Sunday solemn mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and sexually assaulted them.

The complainant, who is now aged 35 and cannot be named, said he and the other choirboy had separated from the choir procession as it exited the church building. The prosecution’s case hinged on his evidence, as the other victim died in 2014 after a heroin overdose. Neither victim told anyone about the offending at the time.

After leaving the procession, the complainant said, he and the other boy snuck back into the church corridors and entered the priest’s sacristy, a place they knew they should not be. There they found some sacramental wine and began to drink. The complainant alleged that P e ll had walked in on them and told them something to the effect of they were in trouble.

P e ll manoeuvred his robes to expose his penis. He stepped forward, grabbed the other boy by the back of his head, and forced the boy’s head on to his penis, the complainant told the court.

P e ll then did the same thing to the complainant, orally raping him. Once he had finished, he ordered the complainant to remove his pants, before fondling the complainant’s penis and masturbating himself. The complainant said the attack only lasted a few minutes, and the boys left the room afterwards, hung up their choir robes and went home.

the earnings gap can be explained in our setting by the fact that men take48% fewer unpaid hours off and work 83% more overtime hours per year than women. Thereason for these differences is not that men and women face different choice sets in this job.Rather, it is that women have greater demand for workplace flexibility and lower demand for overtime work hours than men. These gender differences are consistent with women taking on more of the household and childcare duties than men, limiting their work availability in the process. … When overtime hours are scheduled three months in advance, men sign up for about 7%more of them than women. When overtime is scheduled the day before or the day of thenecessary shift, men work almost twice as many of those hours as women.

A certain suppression order on a trial verdict has been lifted after the DPP decided (surprise, surprise) that a second trial on separate matters didn’t have sufficient evidence to convince a jury.
So, the ABC friendly magistrate finds “case to answer” and DPP responds with “yeah … nah”.
Now for the appeal on first charge, which will undoubtedly succeed (hearsay evidence from a dead guy which never surfaced during his lifetime and was disputed by close relatives is … how you say … flimsy).

Foreign-Educated Immigrants Are Less Skilled Than U.S. Degree Holders

    Summary
While the percentage of immigrants who arrive with a college or advanced degree has risen over the past decade, the extent to which foreign education translates into useful skills here in the United States is an open question. Based on English-language tests of literacy, numeracy, and computer operations administered by the Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), this report finds that, among test-takers with at least a college education, U.S.-degree holders out-score foreign-educated immigrants by a wide margin.
For example, among those with at least a college degree, native-born Americans score at the 74th percentile on literacy, while U.S.-educated immigrants score at the 66th percentile, and foreign-educated immigrants score at just the 42nd percentile. Policy-makers should therefore be cautious in treating foreign degrees as evidence of “high-skill” immigration.

    Other key points:

-Among immigrants in the United States whose highest degree is either a bachelor’s (“college”) or a master’s or Ph.D. (“advanced”), about 40 percent received their highest degree in a foreign country — meaning they are “foreign-educated”.
-On both literacy and computer operations, foreign-educated immigrants with a college or advanced degree perform so poorly that they score at the level of natives who have only a high school diploma.
-On numeracy, foreign-educated immigrants with a college or advanced degree perform closer to the level of natives who have some college education, but not a bachelor’s.
Despite their reputation for specializing in STEM fields, about one in six foreign-degree holders score “below basic” in numeracy.
-The skill gap between foreign and U.S. degree holders persists even among immigrants who have had at least five years in the United States to learn English.
-A skill-selective immigration system could incorporate direct testing of applicants rather than rely on their educational attainment alone.

So in other words, the amino acids you have used or are currently using from other companies, are almost surely manufactured in China. Thought not…..

In tribute to the one topic.

Well, sir, there’s nothing on earth
    Like a genuine, bona fide
    Electrified, 60 year old war
    What’d I say?
    Monomania
    What’s it called?
    Monomania
    That’s right! Monomania
    Monomania
    Monomania
    Monomania
I hear those wars are awfully bad
It states the obvious like a clod
Is there a chance the war could end?
Not in your mind, my monomaniacal friend
What about us who dont care?
    You’ll be made aware
Were you sent here by the Devil?
No, good sir, I’m on the level
    What’d I say?
    Monomania
    What’s it called?
    Monomania
    That’s right! Monomania

I had her pegged as being gay, and slightly effeminate from the first time I saw her, and she was supposedly badly bullied at her last school (interstate) & therefore able to supress a lot. Now she has come “out” the full force of the “system” has swung in to support her, and she is seeking special consideration for exams because of side effects of treatment.

Do you think that applies to the bulk of cases?

The entire thing about being one gender trapped in the opposite’s body strikes me as odd.

How does someone assess their gender? A guy will have first hand access to the physical totality of being a guy. Womanhood has no such substrate and exists only as observed from the outside.

So, for example, I can imagine cases where a boy is in some sort of psychological turmoil and self-diagnoses being a girl as the solution. Particularly when he is encouraged with the idea that it is normal and acceptable. And it would not be the first case where physical pain is preferable to psychological pain.

Not saying this particularly applies to the kid in your class – I have never met them.

I suppose it would be as well to consider that feeling like a boy or a girl is a group thing. Everybody really just feels like themselves. Boyhood and girlhood is about recognising a connection to one of two groups – but it doesn’t happen at random. The boy’s individual physicality and psychology meshes easily with other boys. Not sure how that would work for a boy deciding he is a girl – looking at his shlong and deciding he should have the other thing when he has never had one.

Just putting the thoughts out there.

    LOL.

Being a leftist means never having to say sorry for socialism or communism. Or even, in the case of veteran leftoid millionaire Miriam Margolyes, mentioning socialism or communism at all.

Here’s rich old Miriam in the latest Qantas inflight magazine:

Cuba’s capital is, I think, the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to – and I’ve been to Venice and Paris and many beautiful places.

It’s unadulterated from when it was built by the Spanish in the late 18th century. It’s falling apart because the government is so poor.

H/t Tim Blair. Who else do we know has been to Cuba, recently?

“L’enfer, c’est les autres” – not simply the presence of other people one doesn’t like or respect, as it is most often interpreted, but that their presence reminds one’s self of one’s moral failures/sins.

You’ll be great fun for Notafan in heaven. Assuming you make it there. My fear is that you’ll be in hell with me, telling us hellions about your sins, for ever.

    The Finite with the Infinite??

    Yes, Tony.

In theology the saying is ‘finitum capax infinitum’ the finite is capable of the infinite…by grace.

That grace is because of Christ, in whom one might say infinity became finite, i.e. took on the nature of a human being in order to make us capable of communion with the infinite.

    LOL.
Never happened, as one of the Smolletteers admitted before he died.
