The denuclearisation option

UPDATE: PDT’s post-meeting press conference: “sometimes you have to walk”.

You should wind the video back to the beginning of the press conference. The original post is below.
_________
PDT is in Hanoi trying to resolve the Korean War which began 69 years ago and to end the threat of nuclear escalation in North Korea and in a perfect world end all nuclear arms on the Korean Peninsula. This from here.

CHAIRMAN KIM: (As interpreted.) We had exchanged a very interesting dialogue with each other —

PRESIDENT TRUMP: We did.

CHAIRMAN KIM: (As interpreted.) — for about 30 minutes.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Boy, if you could have heard that dialogue, what you would pay for that dialogue. It was good.

So we’re going to have a very busy day tomorrow, and we’ll probably have a pretty quick dinner and a lot of things are going to be solved, I hope. And I think it’ll lead to wonderful — it will lead to, really, a wonderful situation long term. And our relationship is a very special relationship.

Thank you very much everybody. Thank you. See you tomorrow.

Then there’s this at the other end of the spectrum: Pakistan shoots down 2 Indian warplanes, parades captured pilot on video.

Tensions between two of the world’s nuclear powers were raised dramatically Wednesday after Pakistan’s air force said it shot down two Indian warplanes that crossed the disputed Kashmir border and captured each of the aircraft’s pilots.

In America, of course, the media focuses on Michael Cohen’s testimony about nothing. The best comment comes via Powerline.

You would like to laugh at such dark stupidity, but they are a pathetic bunch of lying scum, with Michael Cohen a perfect representation of the way they think and the way they act.

ADDING WHAT SIMON SAYS: Roger Simon, that is: Dems Reelect Trump by Staging Partisan Cohen Hearing During Nuke Negotiations.

The day the Democrats decided to schedule the House Oversight Committee hearing with Michael Cohen to coincide with Trump’s negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi is the day the Democrats ensured the president’s reelection. It was one of those rare moments of clarity you can imagine in the history books.

The Democrats revealed themselves as partisan hacks while the president was halfway around the world trying to save the lives of millions. That’s not just bad timing, it’s atrocious. And it has little to do with the success or failure of the talks with Kim. No one knows how that will turn out, probably not even the principals themselves. It has do with the priorities of the human race like global survival — what a normal person should care about….

The test for Americans of all political parties, indeed of citizens of all countries, is whether they actually wish Trump well in this endeavor. If they don’t, they are truly evil.

Reagan wanted START not Carter SALT. Usual suspects said impossible.

  2. Old School Conservative

    Spot on analysis Steve.

  3. Not Uh oh

Not much coverage of the Chinese reaction to Trump telling the Vietnamese that he’s happy they’re looking at buying some sophisticated weapons and missiles from the US. He really knows how to play the game doesn’t he?

  4. mh

Thanks, Steve. Just trying to catch up with news on Trump-Kim summit, did a Google search and it lists several stories from The Guardian.

    Sergey, you *%#t !

I note in the linked video @ :04 secs Kim does Trump’s ‘white power’ symbol.

The reason why Pakistan shot down those jets is because India was attempting to defend itself after having nearly 50 of their people murdered in a suicide attack by militants who came from Pakistan.

The MSM in America don’t like to report such things because they don’t want muslims to look bad, since the Democrats are keen on the muslim vote and have just put Ms Omar and Ms Tlaib into Congress.

  7. Roger

That CNN headline…the MSM is now doing parodies of itself! It’s beyond satire.

The reason why Pakistan shot down those jets is because India was attempting to defend itself after having nearly 50 of their people murdered in a suicide attack by militants who came from Pakistan.

It’s also not new. Twenty years ago, India and Pakistan were shooting at each other every day. All the latest incident signals is that both countries think some renewed skirmishing would play well in their respective domestic political arenas.

Scott Adams Periscopes, also available on YouTube, are very useful antidotes to the fake news coming from CNN et al. He has debunked what he terms the ‘Charlottesville hoax’, which, he says, forms the backbone of the anti-Trump narrative in the USA. He is currently investigating the climate change narrative but has not yet reached a conclusion.
As an aside, in relation to climate change, I did a quick survey of the temperatures recorded by the BoM at my local weather station. I summed the temperatures from June 1 2017 to Feb 24 2018, and from June 1 2018 to Feb 24, 2019, then divided the result by the number of days. The 2017-8 result was an average of 19.5C for high temps and 9.3C for lows. The 2018-9 result was 19.2 and 9.1 respectively. In other words, the latest temperature set is an average of 0.3 degrees lower for highs, and 0.2 degrees lower for lows, compared with the previous year.
I know yearly figures are not representative of decades long trends, nor are they representative of anywhere but my location, but one thing is for sure, you won’t hear about a cooler eight month period year on year from the ABC!

If Obama was having this success with NK broadening their outlook about the world and trade and denuclearisation, he would be given 10 more Nobel peace prizes.

But it’s Trump, and the Left media in America must destroy this good thing, even though it is good for the world. Trump must be destroyed at any cost.

You just know they are awaiting the final solution of a bullet in Trump’s direction, and getting impatient for it too by the sounds of Cohen and Pelosi.

  12. Dr Faustus

Always reliable, their ABC’s Zoe Daniel gets crayon onto butchers’ paper:

Donald Trump risks political backlash if he leaves Hanoi without a denuclearisation plan

After detailing Trump’s considerable progress since 2017 in trying to land the Work Nuke issue, Zoe identifies the real problem:

But those steps are mere symbols in the eyes of US media. They want to see missiles pulled apart and launch sites decommissioned within a specific timeframe.

Howler monkeys on the side lines…

  13. But those steps are mere symbols in the eyes of US media. They want to see missiles pulled apart and launch sites decommissioned within a specific timeframe.

Just like what they demanded from Obama, and then pilloried him for not achieving.

    Didn’t they?

  14. If you read nothing but the Australian MSM, notably The Age and Their ABC, all that you’ll see is how Cohen is going to destroy Trump and his fanciful allegations. Even CNN is calling Cohen a liar. But our ‘unbiased’ media just writes what suits their narrative, Orange Man Bad.

  15. duncanm

That Cohen result would be hilarious if it wasn’t so stupid.

No evidence of anything criminal or collusion.

TLDR: “I’m a tart with no morals (I did work I didn’t like, but hey, I’m a lawyer and I’m weepy), and said some nasty things”

  16. duncanm

hey want to see missiles pulled apart and launch sites decommissioned within a specific timeframe.

and when that happens, it’ll be ‘nothing to see here’

    No mate, no.
The Tesla dude was a doctor from Maryland, so wrong Awan.
The spy Awan has long flown the coop and is spending his millions in Pakistan somewhere.
He will never be brought to justice because he has the dirt on EVERY Democrat in Congress and many more from The Kenyan’s White House.
The man was given unfettered access to all secure computers operated by Democrats. A top notch spy in other words.

There’s been a lot of talk of another civil war, but it’s mostly hot air.

However, if Trump gets assassinated, then all bets are off.

  19. Mother Lode

You realise that if Trump comes back from this meeting without a signed agreement the MSM will denounce it as a failure.

They did that last time they met.

There is no such thing as progress or negotiation unless it happens over 30 minutes in the same building as the press but briefly secluded from them. Taking proposals back home and assessing, evaluating and devising counter-proposals is just for show.

Real peace happens when a leader stands on the tarmac and waves a piece of paper.

    Ask Neville Chamberlain.

  20. Mother Lode

There’s been a lot of talk of another civil war, but it’s mostly hot air.

Talk of a civil war is just the indulgent hyperbole.

Republican and Democrat voters live by and large side by side. They socialise, work, borrow each other’s lawn mowers etc. The furious spectacle you see being played out in the media is one thing, but it is not the same fury all the way down to communities.

Not every Republican voter is a warrior for Trump (although they may enjoy what he is doing they odn’t feel the need to antagonise their neighbours), and not every Democrat voter receives instructions by plugging their brains into some Demo-Net.

In most of the things of their daily lives they are more in agreement than disagreement, and where they disagree they will respect the disagreement because they respect the person.

  21. FelixKruell

You would like to laugh at such dark stupidity, but they are a pathetic bunch of lying scum, with Michael Cohen a perfect representation of the way they think and the way they act.

What does that say about the man who would hire such ‘lying scum’ for over a decade as their close, personal, lawyer?

Happy to judge Trump on his outcomes with North Korea, once he has some. Up until then, I’ll just reflect on someone (anyone!) calling Kim a ‘wonderful leader’…

  22. Dr Fred Lenin

Any success Trumo has with the Norks will be due to the ceaseless work in that field ,just as any success in the economic field ls allso due to by obammer the groundwork he did woth his regulations and green agenda is the reasob for Trumps success . If it hadnt been for saint hussain , pope frankie is going to cannonate him the first half black socialist saint..

  23. What does that say about the man who would hire such ‘lying scum’ for over a decade as their close, personal, lawyer?

It says the man knew how to deal with corrupt criminal elements in the property development field, especially in New York. Sometimes you need a pit bull.
What does it say that Cohen begged for a job in the White House, but Trump would have none of it?
It seems to me that a Cohen type character was suited to the work he had to carry out and Trump made the right calls.

Cohen’s wife was a co-signatory to the fraudulent loans Cohen received. The word is Mueller threatened to put her away for 30 years if Cohen didn’t sing what was composed for him. Cohen had no choice as his father in-law is a heavy duty crook who would have made sure Cohen slept with the fishes if he didn’t save his daughter. (recall Cohen had a broken arm recently hmmmmm).

It’s a crooked World. Trump knows how to navigate it.

India need some decent aircraft as an alternative to the older Russian stuff they are using, and are apparently considering a new version of the F-16.

Trump is one of the reasons it is a crooked World.

What does it say that Cohen begged for a job in the White House, but Trump would have none of it?

That seems to be in dispute. But given the dodgy history of other people Trump has let into the Whitehouse, I’d be surprised if he drew the line at Cohen.

do you think its just possible that what some of what Trump says in public is carefully crafted to inflate Kim’s ego and bring him on-side?

History shows us that Trump tends to use a big stick first to tenderise, then comes in with the ego-stroking to seal the deal..

  27. Brian

It might be good to reflect on Rwanda – to paraphrase some ideas above.
“Hutus and Tutsis lived by and large side by side. They socialised, worked, married, borrow each other’s lawn mowers etc. The furious spectacle that then played out in the media led to the same fury all the way down to communities and individuals.”
Of course Africa is a basket case, particularly when society fractures on tribal lines. But the main things that held western societies together are rapidly disappearing. I wonder what we would have thought of civilised Germany in the days leading up to the Nazi takeover – or even civilised Russia before they were conned by the Communists.

  28. FelixKruell

do you think its just possible that what some of what Trump says in public is carefully crafted to inflate Kim’s ego and bring him on-side?

It would require us to believe that Trump thinks before he speaks, and follows carefully crafted plans for engaging people. All the evidence points to this being unlikely.

  29. duncanm

Apologies for trying to engage the troll.

  30. It would require us to believe that Trump thinks before he speaks, and follows carefully crafted plans for engaging people. All the evidence points to this being unlikely.

This is absolutely correct! This is proved by Trump’s consistent inability to get finance and approvals for his development projects and his failure to get voters to elect him as President….

    or something like that.

  31. FelixKruell

This is absolutely correct! This is proved by Trump’s consistent inability to get finance and approvals for his development projects and his failure to get voters to elect him as President….

You don’t get finance and approvals based on what you say – you get them based on what you write, and what your attorneys say.

As for getting elected, he did that (in part) because he doesn’t follow carefully crafted plans for speaking. The difference between his auto-prompter speeches and his off the cuff speeches is amazing.

This is patently false. A person who doesn’t think before speaking and doesn’t carefully plan his engagements to people would never ever have become a multi billionaire and multi successful in various fields.

  33. You don’t get finance and approvals based on what you say – you get them based on what you write, and what your attorneys say.

This is absolutely correct! No government decision has ever been influenced by an individual’s persuasiveness, or anything else other than strict logical pursuit of the public interest!

Cohen, cohen, cohen ,lies lies lies fake fake fake . The derangement syndrome goe on and on and on like a communist dictators speeches ,hitler castro etc . Not a word about the possible positive act of actually ending the 70 year old Korean War . These people are the very definition of Traitors .

Trump is one of the reasons it is a crooked World.

An evidence free mentally deranged statement from a diseased and limited intellect. Hell, you probably still read newspapers and watch TV.

Everything Trump does is highly calculated and meticulously planned. An hour of research would confirm this if you bothered, but you won’t because you’re bone lazy and pretty damn thick.

  36. Empire 5:5

One revelation for those who have been following the Korean situation since 2016 – Trump’s Korean language proficiency has improved rapidly.

  37. Empire 5:5

What does that say about the man who would hire such ‘lying scum’ for over a decade as their close, personal, lawyer?

A super dumb fakestream talking point served up as truth. No rational thinking person makes a statement like this in 2019.

I think that’s a bit naive, Mother Lode.
Look what happens when riots occur in a US city – the first things that get trashed are the neighbourhoods where people burn down the stores that sell them food, loot the shops for goodies, and try to kill the cops and firefighters who attempt to stop the carnage.
A mob has an IQ of the dumbest person in it.

I agree this was no attempt at distraction by Trump. Much worse than that, it was an unmitigated foreign policy disaster, that has now guaranteed a nuclear North Korea.
Having a US President, meet with one of the worlds most pathetic dictators, with no preconditions (not that it would’ve made it any better) only to faun over him, in the most pathetic way imaginable, is a massive coup for the NK regime. What a disaster. What a “great” negotiator.

  45. Iampeter

Also, I guess this means the end for poor ol’ Slayer of Memes.
Look, because I’m a good guy and because you had to be a real imbecile to make such a bad bet, I’m not going to hold you to it.
We can treat this as a learning experience.
