Like most upper class lefties, he’s a total hypocrite of course.

  2. Thomas Ray

So, PRIVATE clubs can no longer be PRIVATE? Can women only clubs exist? Of course, but men only clubs need to allow women to join. Any liberal (or libertarian) person should respect privacy and property rights. He was also correct to tell her not to interrupt him. Interrupting is RUDE, even if you are correct. It made her argument less forceful, as she got emotional. The Senator was stating the facts, she had absolutely no right to hound him. In my opinion, Jane’s behaviour was reprehensible for a Journo.

Jane is not a journo – she is a Liberal Senator for Victoria. Burnside is a candidate at the next election for the Greens.

  4. miltonf

Suspect that they are as bad as each other.

  5. Thomas Ray

My misunderstanding about Jane being a journo. As a Yank, I am usually out of my depth understanding the politics here since we have 2 major parties and both are left of centre. I thought DLP was OK until some of DL’s latest speeches.

Anyway, you are missing the forest for the trees, Mr Davidson, this is about PRIVATE clubs and property rights, and Jane (sadly) falls on the wrong side of the argument for any libertarian.

  6. Sinclair Davidson

Actually No. You are missing the point. Neither Jane nor I have expressed an opinion on men only clubs. She pointed to his hypocrisy on the issue – he is a Greens candidate at the coming election and the Greens are opposed to male only clubs.

Do try keep up. The rest of us are not actually stupid.

  7. thefrolickingmole

Lucky he wasnt wearing the wrong colored tie when he wank-splained (like mansplaining only more so) she should shut up.

Burnside is a deeply damaged person covering his own self loathing with the “cause of the day” to maintain a sense of self worth.
1200 dead bodies in the sea is a small price to pay for the soothing balm of self regard.

  8. Thomas Ray

That wasn’t what I got (obviously) from what Jane was saying. If I missed her point, well, I guess it is all in presentation, as it does appear (to me and probably some of the lay voters) she is going after him for it being a men only club, not for him being a hypocrite. And, she lost the point by rudely interrupting him, much like a child. That is sad, because if that were her point, she could have really grilled the bugger. He essentially made the point for her, she just needed to drive it home. This fellow only needs enough rope and he will do the rest.

Neither would probably earn my vote anyway (if they were in Queensland).

    Cheers

What self respecting woman would really want to be a member of any club he was a member of ? A bunch of boring old snobbish farts with class lssues ,betcha George the Plumber would be nlack balled if someone put him up for membership.

Interesting comment above about the 1200 deaths by the frolickingmole. I suspect this doesn’t really resonate much with the electorate. I was at the country music festival in Tamworth the year after the 1200 drownings and a comedian made a comment to the effect that he wouldn’t have cared if the whole lot had drowned. Everyone in the pub cheered and the cheering made its way down the Main Street of Tamworth as the comment got passed on. Admittedly, the Tamworth country music festival is pretty much redneck territory but I suspect the silent Australian majority share a similar view!

Somebody in the media made the point late last year (after a longstanding men’s-only club was opened up to women), that considerably over half (I forget the exact percentage) of all single-gender clubs in Australia were women-only!
What have the hypocrites Burnside, the Greens, and all the other feminists have to say about that?Crickets.

Nine Newspapers are reporting that Burnside has resigned his membership of the Savage Club%

    Angry old white man.

  14. Nob

It’s nice to see Burnside hoist by his own petard but otherwise I agree with Thomas Ray.

    The exchange
as far as that clip goes, doess nothing to promote liberty.

  15. Nob

Which is a polite way to say it promotes an authoritarian view in order to score a (deserved) point.

Julian Burnside of the p….dos in speedos comment about Tony Abbott.

A rich chap feeling privileged to say anything he likes about people he does not like, even it is nasty and false. Probably bragged about his Twitter credos at the club for the elites.

Of course though he has a right to attend a club of his choosing like anyone else who wants to join a club for some amusement or friendship with like minds.

  17. Linden

Or as Sarah Hanson-Young said about that, accidents happen. So I take it she didn’t give a fuck either.

Induction Night at The Savage Club

    I’m sure it’s full of ex-SAS guys!

  20. Tombell

I’d like to hear from a principled Green about the need to confront women’s only clubs, gyms etc.

  21. candy

I’m now starting to feel a bit sad for him. He’s given up the Savage club.

He’s an elderly chap who wanted to hang out with other elderly rich chaps enjoying beautiful paintings, music and literature. His wife said “go, it’s fine”, wanting that little bit of time to herself. All good, a good marriage, where each do their own stuff as well. I can see that.

  22. Jef

This Burnside, I hope he will just go away and not to be seen again. He can go and live with the illegal immigrants in Nauru though.

  23. Up The Workers!

A certain Mr Julius Henry Marx – better known as “Groucho” (he’s the more popular younger brother of Mr Karl Marx – better known as “Commo”) once famously said: “I refuse to join any club that would admit me as a member!”

Pity Burnside didn’t have the same attitude – but then, he’s a Karl fan – not a Groucho fan.

  24. Linden

Well that’s it, Mr Burnside make a lot a money representing asylum seekers. It would be very interesting to know how much he gets paid from the public purse for providing his fine services. He wants the golden goose to keep laying them $$eggs

  25. Burnside is a pompous ass. The greens are welcome to him and it won’t be long before he is wanting to assert himself over the minions (as he sees them) as he considers himself to be the smartest MAN in the room.

  26. PK

Groucho’s oft quoted remark about refusing to join a club that would have him as a member comes to mind.
What a storm in a teacup. Who cares? Why would any self respecting woman want to join a men’s club anyway?

The Martin Trumble of teh Grunenfuhrers.

  28. Shy Ted

He and Trumble could have been separated at birth. Fraternal twins but identical personalities.
