bern: Dilmah make a pleasantly mild black tea in bags, won’t have the centuries old aged tannin of a teapot. Some people find is a bit too weak though.

The local Asian grocery generally has a selection of Jasmine pearl tea … get a larger than average mug and drop a couple of pearls in the bottom. It takes a while to soak out the tea … you drink the top three quarters and throw away whats in the bottom. Worth a try, maybe you like it.

We have a problem. The problem is that Islam is incompatible with our society.
We can deal with this problem by:
    1. Ignoring it – that ain’t working.
    2. Making excuses for the problem makers – makes the problem worse.
    3. Using methods to deal with the problem that don’t work but make us feel as if we are dealing with the issue.

Vic engineer loses fart bully case appeal.

A Melbourne engineer who claims his colleague repeatedly farted near him and “thrusted his bum” at him has lost his bullying case on appeal.

But David Hingst, 56, has vowed to take his case to the High Court.

He had sought $1.8 million in a suit against his former employer Construction Engineering, but a judge blasted the case out of the Supreme Court last year.

Mr HIngst applied to appeal the case, saying “flatulence was a form of bullying” and his ex-colleague Greg Short was a serial farter.

The Court of Appeal ruled against Mr Hingst on Friday, refusing to grant him leave to appeal and ordering him to pay the defendant’s legal costs.

“The application will be refused, with costs,”Justice Phillip Priest said.

In response, Mr Hingst promised to take the case to the nation’s top court.

“I’m taking it to the High Court,” he told the judges…

On Monday, Mr Hingst gave details of the alleged bullying, saying Mr Short would come into his small, windowless office several times a day and break wind.

“He would fart behind me and walk away. He would do this five or six times a day,” he told AAP outside court.

ABC stained by link to Al Jazeera sting of Pauline Hanson

    Chris Kenny

Mocking Pauline Hanson and One Nation is neither difficult nor original. And it has proven to be counter-productive over the past 23 years.

Sure, it can be fun; it is a folly I have slipped into myself at times. But it merely confirms the us versus them, insiders versus outsiders and Canberra bubble versus the mainstream dynamic that fuels the popularity of fringe parties or even anti-establishment politicians such as Donald Trump.

Remember “Please explain?” and how the political/media class denigrated Hanson for not knowing the word xenophobic? The word has little relevance in the daily lives of mainstream Australians but is drummed into undergraduates — or certainly was in the 70s and 80s — as they are instructed in the Manning Clark version of Australian history.

If commentators and politicians insist on ridiculing One Nation as fools there is every chance they play into their hands. Voters will watch the Al Jazeera tapes and make up their own minds about the hypocrisy and gullibility of what James Ashby, Steve Dickson and Pauline Hanson were caught doing and saying.

For all the silliness of Hanson entertaining Port Arthur conspiracy theories it is the offensive that cuts through most. The idea insults the victims, our country and the intelligence of anyone listening to her.

The rush from many who should know better in the media to endorse the entrapment practices of Al Jazeera is a worry. There is no doubt the One Nation team was lied to, deceived, set up and entrapped.

This is a disgraceful style of gotcha journalism that is certainly unethical and possibly illegal. Yet senior journalists at the ABC and elsewhere have effectively been saying that the ends justify the means — that anything goes when it comes to attacking One Nation.

Again, this runs the risk of galvanising their support as the anti-establishment party.

It should be possible to maintain our condemnation for the hypocrisy, poor judgment, transactionalism and foolishness of One Nation while also objecting to the practices that have exposed this. Al Jazeera perhaps spent all their time and money hoping to snare a bigger prize, but One Nation stumbled along.

It was a sting, where they set up a false organisation and then facilitated meetings so that the mistakes the political players made were in response to artificially created situations. It doesn’t excuse their behaviour but it explains much of what went on.

And if Al Jazeera was prepared to do this, what else about its reporting ought we be wary about? Many of us have argued for years that is wrong for the ABC to have formal content sharing arrangements with Al Jazeera. It is not good for our public broadcaster to be associated with this episode.

For people who like feeding wild birds here is a study of people who like feeding wild birds.

Observations at backyard bird feeders influence the emotions and actions of people that feed birds (25 Mar, via Phys.org)

It finds that people who like feeding wild birds like feeding wild birds. Which if you think about it is very logical. I’m amused that it also says:

Lastly, we suggest cross‐cultural research, particularly in countries where feeding is discouraged (e.g. Australia) compared to those where it is largely encouraged (e.g. United States and the United Kingdom).

The Media Left rides through the Mueller truthiness storm as though nothing significant happened.

President wrongly claims special counsel’s report fully exonerated him as he woos voters in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Though Trump told the crowd multiple times that Mueller found “no collusion and no obstruction”, the attorney general William Barr’s four-page summary of Mueller’s report only stated that it found no proof that Trump criminally colluded with Russia. Barr’s summary said Mueller had reached no conclusion about whether Trump had obstructed justice, but Barr wrote that he decided there was insufficient evidence to pursue an obstruction charges against Trump.

So, after a good look around, Mueller found no proof of collusion, or obstructing justice.
But wrong to say Mueller found no collusion or obstruction.

Trump’s more outlandish claims came in an attack on progressives’ Green New Deal, which he falsely stated called for the elimination of airplanes and cows.

AOC:We set a goal to get to net zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren’t sure we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”

So, if the Green Nude Eel plans to take more than 10 years to “fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes” it is “false” and “outlandish” to call it out.

The percentage of underrepresented minority tenure track faculty in Harvard’s Sciences division has increased 10 percentage points to 13 percent in the past year, according to Dean of Science Christopher W. Stubbs.

At the end of the pipeline, the Sciences departments — most recently including Math — have broadened their faculty searches in intellectual scope in order to identify candidates who are both “outstanding” and “representational,” according to Stubbs.

“If I did a faculty search in a very narrow sub-sliver, the likelihood of an underrepresented strong candidate landing in that narrow field is small,” he said.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa House of Representatives received the ‘fetal homicide’ bill Wednesday morning after it passed the senate Tuesday afternoon.

If it becomes law, this bill would increase the penalty for a person who causes the death of an unborn fetus.

“When a domestic violence situation occurs or a vehicular homicide, those type of incidents, in which a mother and her unborn child are killed or murdered the charge for the baby is the same as the mother. So instead of receiving one count of felony murder they would see two counts of felony murder,” Iowa State Senator Jake Chapman, R-Adel, said.

That means whoever is found responsible could be sentenced to life in prison for the deaths.

The bill also gives a definition for “unborn person” something which is not defined anywhere in Iowa law.

Planned Parenthood representatives said they weren’t involved in this bill until that definition was added.

“The problem lies in inserting this language into code. So this specific bill does not bring us to a ban on abortion right away, however, it then writes in our code, a definition of person that could interfere with private medical decisions,”Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Public Affairs Manager Jamie Burch Elliott said.

She said “personhood language” is dangerous.

“When you define a person, in this way, then you could ultimately end up with bans on birth control bans on in vitro fertilization attempts at criminalizing a miscarriage or criminal investigations for miscarriage,” Elliott said.

Chapman said the definition is important because in his opinion it humanizes the unborn.

“I think it’s important that we recognize the dignity of not only the born person, but the unborn person and I think it’s extreme to view an individual who has been murdered at 38 or 39 weeks as any different than a one week old,” Sen. Chapman said.

The bill now moves onto the house for discussion.

We need a second amendment like we need a national hole in the head.

Numbers visceral response on the topic of gun ownership, his use of made up facts and statistics, his unwillingness to engage on a discussions based on real facts and statistics most probably means one thing:

Numbers has very poor self control. Numbers essentially doesn’t trust himself with a gun therefore he doesn’t trust anyone with guns. He projects his lack of self control onto everyone else, therefore high levels of gun ownership automatically equate to murder and mayhem regardless of what any statistics or logical analysis might say. This assessment is further supported by his apparent view that government ownership of guns is completely safe. Not one comment on Vikpol’s purchase of 800 Assault Rifles.

As someone who works in remote areas I don’t see a point in the ABC anymore. They have largely outsourced all the programming to FM coastal centres spouting swathes of Green Left Arts type programming that is largely boring & repetitive. Even the gardening segments are shade of their former selves…

The old days especially in the Galillee Basin I would tune into 640KHz on the AM (I think) and I would get everything from the usual biased views of Politics to Foreign Affairs to farming & weather to sport and local matters which was always good to get a knowledge of when trying to strike up a relationship with the local station bosses whose land we were often drilling on. Lately have found myself trying to tune into the likes of 4HI and such only to have to endure Ray Hadley’s epic ad/rantfest for the morning session but still a marked improvement on the ABC.

It’s a philosophical objection, not religious, and the objections are not to the ‘freezing’ of fertilized eggs alone, is to the severing of the sex act from procreation, to the deliberate creation of multiple embryos that will be destroyed, to the commodification of children, and the like.

Ever considered that this might have something to do with the National Firearm Agreement?
That was, after all, the intent of the legislation.

If you weren’t a complete idiot you would already know that the ABS data shows that a downward trend in gun deaths in Australia started in the early 1980’s. The commencement of this trend is not linked to any changes to gun laws and in fact the origin of this change remains largely unexplained. This trend remained unmoved by events of 1996 and the subsequent NFA and has continued on the same downward trend regardless of the NFA until recent years.

Anyone who starts discussing Australian gun death data only from 1996 onwards is either unqualified to discuss the matter or understands the data and has decided to misrepresent the true picture by selecting 1996 as a start date.

Heres a question for numbers and his gunnereagh* infection which is plagueing him.

Gun control is just another erosion of their power vis a vis the rich, powerful and well connected. The issue is not that there are too many guns, and that it’s dangerous. We all know that there are indeed too many guns and it is dangerous.

The real question is, if we restrict gun ownership, who are we restricting? Not everyone certainly: Middle Class, poor people, blue collar, lower class, and regular old Joe’s, with normal jobs, and suburban lifestyles.
Criminals will still have guns. Gangs will still have guns. The underworld will still have guns. Law enforcement will still have guns. AND THE RICH AND WELL CONNECTED WILL STILL HAVE GUNS OR AT LEAST THEIR BODYGUARDS WILL HAVE THEM, WHICH IS THE SAME THING.

So all that restricting guns accomplishes for ordinary Americans is that it makes them more vulnerable, more dependent, less able to defend themselves against criminals, law enforcement, the military, and the rich and well connected should the need arise. It is another take-away. A slow erosion of their independence in favor of the connected classes: dependence on someone else to protect and sustain them.

When we say we need to give up guns it has to be everyone or no one. Michael Bloomberg can’t decry the insanity of gun violence in America, lobby for “sane” gun laws, and then have his bodyguards carrying guns.

Why does numbers support crims & the rich over the average person?

gunnereagh*: A near terminal STD infection of the brain brought on by excessive self love while holding oneself superior to “Damn Yankees”.

How about medicine? Two interesting articles today:

Bacteria partners with virus to cause chronic wounds, study finds (28 Mar)

A common bacterial pathogen called Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a virus that substantially increases the pathogen’s ability to infect us, according to a study by investigators at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

When a phagocyte encounters bacteria, the appropriate response is to gobble them up, chew them up and call in more troops. But phagocytes’ response to a virus is different, Bollyky said. “If you’re an immune cell, ingesting a virus is absolutely the worst thing you can do, because now you’ve let it get inside of you—you’re infected by it.”

The Pf vaccine might turn out to be effective against other pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which can also carry Pf and tend to co-infect wounds colonized by P. aeruginosa, Bollyky said.

This beastie kills a lot of people. Turns out it is like an aircraft carrier that uses squadrons of viruses to blow a path for the main vessel to infect you. So a Pf vaccine could be a very major advance in ulcer treatment and similar problems.

Copycat fungus deceives immune system and deactivates body’s response to infection (28 Mar)

Fungus can imitate signals from our immune system and prevent our body from responding to infection, new research from the University of Sheffield has found.

Life-threatening fungal infection is a major killer of people with immune system problems such as blood cancers, HIV infection or following organ transplant.

“We found the fungus was activating a normal immune pathway that prevents overstimulation of the immune system, but is essential in stopping infections.

“Opportunistic infections like Cryptococcus—which normally pose no threat, but are potentially life-threatening in those with weakened immune systems—are an increasing problem and are often very difficult to treat.

Again this critter is hacking the immune system to tell it to go away. Hundreds of thousands of people die of it. So stopping it doing that could save a lot of lives.

Two nice papers on the arms race between the immune system and nasties trying to bypass it.

Omarjan Azari yells Allahu Akbar, refuses to stand as he’s convicted on terror plot

A Sydney man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison over his role in a horrific plan to kill random Australians in the name of and organise funding for the Islamic State.

Omarjan Azari, 24, continued his behaviour of refusing to stand for Justice Natalie Adams in the Supreme Court room at Parramatta on Friday afternoon.

The Afghani-born Azari shouted “Allahu Akbar, Takbir, Allahu Akbar” — an expression to the effect of “God is greatest” — after Justice Adams informed the court he would be eligible for parole on March 17, 2028.

His sentence will be counted from September 2014, when he was arrested days after a 20-minute phone call where he discussed a plan to kill random Australians and video the act with the Islamic State flag in the background.

He has been imprisoned in Goulburn correctional facility since.

In addition to the 12 years for planning an attack, he received eight years for his role in organising funding to be sent to Islamic State in Syria. Two years of the sentences will be served concurrently, bringing his total effective sentence to 18 years

  184. Anyone who starts discussing Australian gun death data only from 1996 onwards is either unqualified to discuss the matter or understands the data and has decided to misrepresent the true picture by selecting 1996 as a start date.

What “true picture” are you talking about?
It doesn’t matter what point in time you start, the stats are the stats.
The study that sheds the best light on whether or not the NFA made any difference is Firearm related deaths in Australia, 1991-2001 – Jenny Mouzos & Catherine Rushforth ISSN: 0817-8542 Published: 2003
It contains a lot of useful information, which I suggest you read and digest, but as far as the issue of the effect of the NFA is concerned, there is a graph which is instructive. It graphs the number of deaths by year. It initially shows a steady decline from 1991 until 1996, when the rate of decline increases steeply from 1996 until 1998. There is a slight rise in 1999, and a similar fall in 2000. Something caused the change in trend in 1996, and it is most likely the NFA.

The fact that the trend was steadily downwards prior to 1996, is important, but what is more significant is the change in trend.

Suicides and accidental deaths are also graphed. The NFA seems to have influenced the suicide rate which dropped between 1996 and 1998, mirroring the homicide rate. Accidental deaths haven’t changed much – https://aic.gov.au/publications/tandi/tandi269

Another useful chart is from Alpers, Philip, Amélie Rossetti and Mike Picard. 2019, covering the period 1987 until 2016 shows a similar trend, with a major dip in the graph after the NFA in 1996. The rate has remained largely unchanged since 2005.

Numbers has been rabbitting on about gun control comparisons between the US and Australia most of the day. He has rejected comparisons with US states like New Hampshire and nations like Canada and Switzerland as “outriders” (sic), but doesn’t see Australia as one.

Perhaps he could stick with the US, but compare the national statistics with regions that have very strict gun laws. I am not too familiar with the US, but I understand that Chicago and Washington DC both fit that criterion. Perhaps other Cats could add to the list so that Numbers can compare the US as a whole (generally lax laws) with culturally similar internal regions.

That is not what I’m saying.
There are two issues, one relevant to the USA, and one relevant in Australia.
In terms of the USA, they have a public health problem because there is almost unfettered access to high powered weapons. If they had any sense they’d do something about it. That “something” doesn’t mean that law abiding people couldn’t possess a weapon for self defence. It might include the need for background checks and licensing, something that the majority of law abiding citizens in the USA actually support. It might also include restrictions on weapons like AR-15s and Bushmasters. In the end, that’s up to the septics, and none of our business.
