Western De-civilisation

Demonstration of progress:

In 1964, 15 of the 50 premier universities in America required students to take a survey of Western civilization. All 50 offered the course, and nearly all of them (41) offered it as a way to satisfy some requirement.

By 2010, none of the 50 top universities required Western civilization, and 34 didn’t even offer the course.

What are the numbers in Australia?

Bueller?  Bueller?  Bueller?  Bueller?

In an age of unparalleled availability of knowledge our universities have decided to teach people how to knit pussyhats.

I think that is both the failing and the answer. The failing is the Left have so conquered the centralized education system that they can now successfully prevent students from getting a meaningful education – thereby having no one else to turn to but the Left for understanding the world.

The answer is that knowledge is now so available that no person needs a university any more, except to provide a piece of paper that gets them a job. So as soon as employers realise that university graduates are exactly the sort of people they shouldn’t be employing a new education system will blossom.

I’m sure there is a business model there for the taking, for an intrepid educational software developer not handicapped by political blinkers.

  3. Pyrmonter

As recently as the 1980s, when Pyrmonter was an aspiring student, matriculants to Australian universities (though not CAEs) were expected to have decent understanding of at least one maths/science subject and at lest one humanities/languages/music subject. Not a bad comparison I’d suggest. What’s the use of a superficial survey of the horizon, at the cost of a decent foundation in calculus or competence in a foreign language?

If so, they’re taking a bloody long time to deliver it to market, and if they don’t hurry up, it will be made illegal. No Gramscian would allow an alternative to flourish.

a new education system will blossom

This is happening already. For example, see https://mic.com/articles/188569/jordan-peterson-is-creating-his-own-online-university-to-destroy-college-indoctrination-cults#.zLorXoNpb

What with 4th gen nuclear energy, a near costless education system, online medicine, courts that consider the Constitution worth following, regulation pruning, and oh so much more, the USA will be transformed over the next 6 years, and will be as strong in the world as ever. By the time the Dems get a chance at the White House, there will be such a buzz that Democrats will have to re-strategise. Their current strategy is built on continuing the enervation of the country by the endless regulation, high tax, big government, divisive politics of Obama, and a bag-full of lies.

Trump’s changes have not been bedded down yet, and the new freedoms are only just beginning to bear fruit. One thing you can know about Americans, if they see an opportunity, that opportunity will be developed. Americans know how to use their unleashed energy.

Just read that attack on Jordan Peterson.

t’s just extraordinary how the same people who support BDS can have the gall to claim that opposition to post modernism is secret anti semitism (and in the same article attack Ben Shapiro).

    Must for brains.
