“Mann-made” global warming shown to be a fraud

I remember meeting Tim Ball because it was on the day that Donald Trump was elected and so it was a double pleasure to have shared the moment with him. And now he has won his libel lawsuit against Michael Mann, the inventor of the “hockey stick”, who sued Tim because he described Mann’s science as fraudulent. Let me fill in more of the details via Powerline: MICHAEL MANN REFUSES TO PRODUCE DATA, LOSES CASE.

Some years ago, Dr. Tim Ball wrote that climate scientist Michael Mann “belongs in the state pen, not Penn State.” At issue was Mann’s famous “hockey stick” graph that purported to show a sudden and unprecedented 20th century warming trend. The hockey stick featured prominently in the IPCC’s Third Assessment Report (2001), but has since been shown to be wrong. The question, in my view, is whether it was an innocent mistake or deliberate fraud on Mann’s part. (Mann, I believe, continues to assert the accuracy of his debunked graph.) Mann sued Ball for libel in 2011. Principia Scientific now reports that the court in British Columbia has dismissed Mann’s lawsuit with prejudice, and assessed costs against him.

What happened was that Dr. Ball asserted a truth defense. He argued that the hockey stick was a deliberate fraud, something that could be proved if one had access to the data and calculations, in particular the R2 regression analysis, underlying it. Mann refused to produce these documents. He was ordered to produce them by the court and given a deadline. He still refused to produce them, so the court dismissed his case.

Beyond even that, with Tim Ball, Mark Steyn, who has also been sued by Mann, and myself all Canadians by birth, it is an indefensible case of cultural appropriation for Michael Mann to have used the hockey stick for his imagery.

  1. I hope Mann is bankrupted – any idea how much this will set the prick back?

  2. Does this end the 1.5 TRILLION dollars wasted every year on this fraud?

    Nope.

    Keep knitting them ropes then.

I hope Mann is bankrupted – any idea how much this will set the prick back?

Alas, he dipped into a “scientific defense fund” for all his lawfare claims – because he doesn’t have to pay, it’s better to “lose” this way and not have the court rule that what Ball said was true and therefore not libel. His take, and the alarmists in general, will be that Ball didn’t win the case, Mann toughed it out and refused to give his proprietary “intellectual” property away.*

    * scare quotes because IMO, Mann is not in any way an intellectual, and most certainly not a gifted competent one.

    Yes.

The dogma lives loud with this type.

  5. Keep knitting them ropes then.

We don’t need ropes. What needs to be done is set aside a some remote area in south-west Tasmania that has absolutely no modern conveniences whatsoever and lock the lot up there to fend for themselves in the caveman lifestyle they want everyone else to endure. And then forget about them.

David Attenborough stated that he became convinced of Anthropogenic Global Warming after viewing Michael Mann’s hockey stick graph.

    If no-one sees a hockey stick self-combust in a forest … it didn’t happen.

Truth, evidence, etc., mean nothing. The skillful use of propaganda will dominate, and in the short to medium term, will win the battle of attrition.

They have not hung themselves yet, despite a plethora of opportunity, so what makes you think that may still happen?

This will not be won by voyeurs.

Well it looks like we ought to be following the money.
Funny how the media isn’t reporting on this…

Legal actions in the USA sound expensive, so it is quite a decision to engage in lawfare only to withdraw and cop a huge but predictable bill. I guess Mann must have received a big sweetener from Gore’s royalties after his hockey stick played the starring role in An Inconvenient Truth so he has the cash to splash, but I don’t know. Maybe he’s being paid to stir the pot still. After the years of water torture he’s been putting Mark Steyn through I’ve never thought he would furnish anything, and the chart is bull anyway, but why pursue such costly and long legal actions and not follow through eventually, I don’t understand. Good news about Tim Ball though.

And then there is this climate story fraud,

I would never have thought RT might have the moral high ground,

“As protesters in London chanted “Hey hey, ho ho, Bolsonaro’s got to go!” two even bigger blazes burned unnoticed in Africa. Over Thursday and Friday, more fires were recorded in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo than in Brazil, Bloomberg reported, citing NASA satellite data. In those two days alone, 6,902 fires were recorded in Angola and 3,395 in the DRC. 2,127 were spotted in Brazil in the same period.”

And reporting tweets from Brazilians apart from the President, Gorrign Minister, Chief of Army etc who are disgusted at Macron in particular piously instructing the peasants,

    @Desesquerdizada
    Replying to @EmmanuelMacron
You’re so “worried” about climate and biodiversity that you don’t care about the thousand fires in Angola, DR Congo, Madagascar and Zambia. Maybe because they don’t compete with the inneficient farmers that your government has to subsidize.

PS. A government that couldn’t take care of a cathedral at Paris has nothing to teach about Amazon.
    It’s OUR home, not yours.

    Or reporting NASA

    NASA Earth Observatory
Editor’s Note: This story was updated on 22 August 2019 to clarify our data source.

In the Amazon rainforest, fire season has arrived. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured these images of several fires burning in the states of Rondônia, Amazonas, Pará, and Mato Grosso on August 11 and August 13, 2019.

In the Amazon region, fires are rare for much of the year because wet weather prevents them from starting and spreading. However, in July and August, activity typically increases due to the arrival of the dry season. Many people use fire to maintain farmland and pastures or to clear land for other purposes. Typically, activity peaks in early September and mostly stops by November.

As of August 16, 2019, an analysis of NASA satellite data indicated that total fire activity across the Amazon basin this year has been close to the average in comparison to the past 15 years. (The Amazon spreads across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and parts of other countries.) Though activity appears to be above average in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia, it has so far appeared below average in Mato Grosso and Pará, according to estimates from the Global Fire Emissions Database, a research project that compiles and analyzes NASA data. (Note that while the chart label says 2016, the 2019 data is listed on all of the plots as a green line. Roll your cursor over the green 2019 block below the plot to isolate the 2019 numbers.)

From now on I think it would be appropriate if an upside hockey stick could appear next to Mann’s name. Someone might be able to produce an icon we can all copy and paste in. It would be a hoot! Also it could become an insignia for all skeptics.

  19. Cold-Hands

why pursue such costly and long legal actions and not follow through eventually, I don’t understand.

Mann has been trying to outlast his critics. He doesn’t pay his own legal bills, so he’s been delaying, & delaying, trying to get his critics to concede or go bankrupt themselves. Fortunately, his opponents have established their own pool of donors to finance their fighting funds, so eventually Mann reached the stage where he had to put up or shut up. Revealing his data would have shown the world that his “hockey stick” was constructed using suspect methodology & manipulated data- losing this way means he can keep the fraud alive. He knows he can rely on his allies in the MSM to keep shtum on the judgement.

Fish, as in proper fish with gills only, never flopped out of the water and never will.
I can’t see an evolutionary path for that. What you maybe referring to is some originally dry land creatures returning to dry land due to circumstances.

“The IPCC (and CSIRO) relied heavily on the Mann paper in coming to their global warming conclusions.
The paper’s climate curve was nicknamed the “hockey stick”: relatively flat from 1550 to 1900, with a sharp rise as greenhouse warming lifted global average temperatures.”

MM> “BC Court never made any finding that I failed to produce any data. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying or facilitating a lie.
Ball got case dismissed based on:
    1. Complaints about his age and poor health
    2. Arguing his attacks on me were impotent anyway.

    My lawyer’s statement:”

  32. Mann’s lawyer has a MUCH different version of events. Ball requested the case
be dismissed. There was no finding Mann withheld data or did anything fraudulent,
and Ball’s own lawyer said he (Ball) had no credibility.

We know Tim Ball requested the data, and that’s a standard part of the discovery process.

I like Peter Robinson a lot, the weekly Ricochet podcast is a must listen. I should listen/watch his Uncommon Logic interviews more often.

  42. Dr Faustus

In reality, Mann lost the war as soon as he brought the suit against Tim Ball. If he was ever concerned to protect his professional and personal reputation, all he had to do was publish his data and workings – just like non-fraudulent scientists do as a matter of routine.

All he has achieved by delaying and defying the court order to produce is to shove along the damage snowball started by Dr Ball. He is now at the point where 97.3% of scientists know he is a fraud.

And it looks like the goose is planning to appeal.

    Good job.

These are religious beliefs. Science and in particular mathematics blow both AGW and DE faiths away instantly. Both seemed initially plausible hypothesis but when examined shown utterly impossible.

That we unaware of the mechanics of a phenomenon is not evidence it does not exist. Evolution happened, the theory is far from complete but just as we cannot predict the future of complexity nor should we expect to understand the history that gave rise to that complexity(that’s a mathematical argument).

Ball accused Mann without apparently needing to know all of Mann’s files (which have all been available on his Web site for a decade and a half, anyway.) So why did he need them in court?
