Are you hallucinating? I gave Turnbull a chance by having an open mind about him, as I really thought he’d learned his lesson when he was dumped the first time as opposition leader. I subsequently walked away in disgust. That’s it.

    Good stuff from Peter Dutton:

I*l*mic State brides in Syria could cause ‘mass casualty’ attack in Australia if rescued, Peter Dutton says

Peter Dutton said he had received advice that some of the women were as “hardcore” as the male I*la*ic State fighters they spent time with.

“These are people that would, in our judgement — not all of them but some of them — have the potential and capacity to come back here and cause a mass casualty event,” Mr Dutton told 2GB.

“So I don’t think it should come as a surprise when we say we’re not going to send our soldiers to rescue people of this nature.”

The Home Affairs Department has confirmed at least 17 dual-nationals who fled Australia to join IS have been stripped of their citizenship, but they declined to identify all the individuals affected.

Now we need the SFL government to unite behind Dutton.

Really, there’s only one solution. One tried and tested over 60,000 years.

    All-out tribal warfare.

Spearing the men. Roping, kidnapping and enslaving their women, and hearing their lamentations. Staking the infants on anthills and leaving them to die in the sun.

    All that cultural stuff.

    Damn straight, Mr Dutton.

Unsurprisingly, the SJW commo equalideeee nincompoops are squealing ‘but but but but wymyn’ when in this case they’re just as great a danger, if not more so than their ever-so-slightly more hirsute male counterparts.

I might suggest it is not really ‘ground up’ if it is done from reaching down from on high.

Jupes I tried to open your link on Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and I got a WordPress site.

Yeah it is but it should be the AMT article. It is when I click the link.

The original was published in the Herald Sun last Friday or Saturday. The interview was with Hamish McLachlan. It was reprinted in the Sunday Times in Perth, hence I use Press Reader to access the article as I don’t have a subscription to News Limited or the Sunday Times.

Worth the effort to find it if the link doesn’t work.

Lessons from Australia’s original water industry

The modern water sector could learn a lot from Australia’s traditional owners, who have been caring for the environment for the past 60,000 years.

“It was a sustainable and successful industry that balanced efficiency and equity quite well, which is something the modern sector struggles with,” Frangos said.

Indigenous Energy Australia aims to incorporate this knowledge into its work delivering ‘enabling infrastructure’ like water, wastewater and energy to communities across Australia.

Every project is based around contributing to outcomes such as reducing the unemployment rate or creating a sustainable revenue stream, and is offered – not given – to the community.

“Whether we’re working with an apartment block in the middle of Sydney or a small community in Alice Springs, it’s about engaging with people and assessing the capacity and capability for the community to be involved,” Frangos said.

“We’d then look at the skills required to build and operate the project and the existing skills within the community and try to match them up.”

Indigenous Energy is looking at how the site’s diesel generator can be upgraded to a renewable energy source using solar power, a battery and anaerobic digestion.

“There’s also a drive towards renewable energy; it aligns with the Indigenous concept of custodianship and care for country.”

Far-right activists are exploiting concerns about the safety of women and children to target M00slims and ethnic minorities, an official report has found.

    Your tax dollar at work:

A former Wallaby and a one-time cocaine smuggler are among 15 defendants named in a multi-million-dollar liquidators’ lawsuit alleging breaches of duties and voidable transactions following the collapse of a children’s care charity.

Glen Ella, who played rugby for Australia alongside two of his brothers in the 1980s, served as chief executive of Guardian Youth Care from 2014.

The NSW Government paid the charity millions of dollars each year to look after troubled teenagers full time in homes across western Sydney.

But Guardian Youth Care went under in June 2017 after its funding was cut off by the NSW Government.

The Department of Family and Community Services said the charity had been outsourcing the bulk of its services to for-profit companies without permission, which was not allowed under the funding agreement.

Liquidators have been appointed and are seeking to recover funds from the charity’s directors and associates claiming breaches of duties and that some transactions are voidable under corporations laws.

The liquidators main target is former boxer Roy Bijkerk. He is known for serving jail time in the early 2000s for conspiring in the 1990s to import cocaine with underworld figure Warren Richards.

The charity engaged companies associated with Mr Bijkerk to provide it with all goods and services except for staff wages and the companies were paid millions in “management fees” for the work and services they performed….

Ontario human rights tribunal orders employer to pay $120,000 in damages to worker it didn’t even hire

A recent award from Ontario’s human rights tribunal should have employers carefully reviewing their HR policies and emailing their employment lawyers.

[email protected] Haseeb, a university graduate in engineering, has been awarded over $120,000 by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario in a discrimination in employment application against Imperial Oil. What makes this case particularly interesting is that Haseeb never actually worked for Imperial Oil. The discrimination in question was the company’s reneging on a job offer.

The case involved a hiring policy requiring applicants to prove they were eligible to work in Canada on a permanent basis. Haseeb would have been eligible for a work permit for a job at Imperial Oil but he was neither a Canadian citizen nor permanent resident. In his application, he stated — falsely — that he was in fact eligible to work on a permanent basis. This led to a job offer. But when Imperial Oil asked for proof of citizenship or permanent residency, he could not provide it. As a result, Imperial Oil rescinded the offer.

Before the human rights tribunal the company argued that the offer was rescinded because of Haseeb’s dishonesty, not his lack of citizenship. The tribunal held that although Haseeb may have been dishonest, the discriminatory policy the company followed was enough to constitute a violation of Ontario’s Human Rights Code. What discriminatory policy is that, you may ask? The employer distinguished between candidates based on whether or not they were Canadian citizens. The tribunal ruled that this distinction was not a bona fide occupational requirement. Though it is legitimate not to hire someone because they lied, if the reason they lied was to avoid discriminatory treatment, the tribunal held, the lie is justified and the question illegal.

You support centrally planning an economy and don’t believe rights exist, but think you’re a capitalist.

Neither of these accusations is true or supportable but figments from your the fever swamp of your brain.

    From Arky yesterday:

Rights and freedoms don’t exist, so can’t be violated.

And I shouldn’t have to explain on a capitalist blog that someone who doesn’t believe in rights but “responsiblities” is someone calling for central planning.
So the only question for thefrollickingmole now is:
    A) Did you not read the thread before coming in like an expert making a fool of yourself?
    B) Thought other people couldn’t just read the thread and see you’re wrong?
    C) Don’t give a shit anyway because you’re slimy and dishonest?

Sinc, can we get a Fat Check on N.S.W. Catallaxy Posters please?

  34. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

” When good people are silent, and do nothing, evil triumphs. That sentiment is attributed to English philosopher Edmund Burke, and he may or may not have said it, but it is true nonetheless. ”

    Also

“First they came …” is a poem written by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984). It is about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis’ rise to power”

Occasionally something happens in our own small world that gets these words attributed to Burke, and Niemoller’s poem, into front of mind.

As our Catallaxy world is small, the issue bringing these words to mind may be very small too. Its seeming inconsequence though does nothing to diminish its absolute seriousness. I am writing to draw attention to precisely that fact.

I speak, of course, of the axing of regular commenter None by the blog owner here for expressing what many here as well as None have already termed an opinion, backed by some evidence in its support; an opinion many others here agreed with. None’s opinion may have been incomplete, even wrong, but she did express it on a site where robust debate is the raison d’etre and it was not illegal as expressed. No violence was requested, indeed the opposite was made clear, no harm was hoped for the person to whom the opinion referred.

Many have already argued in support of None on this matter, None’s opinion was very acceptable, well within community standards for debate regarding assessing the ACTIVITIES of a political public figure. The blog owner thought otherwise, found the opinion offensive to his understanding of matters, demanded an apology, and when it was not immediately forthcoming, he effectively banned the commenter. To return, she MUST issue an apology. In other words, she should recant on a sincerely held opinion.

Enforced recantations have a very long and ugly history. Especially against women.

So this issue brings our favorite blog into some very dangerous ground. None has been effectively 18C’d on home ground, a paradox in an arena working fiercely to dismiss 18C from our country’s Statutes concerning the public space. Some here have said None has commented in ways they dislike, so they don’t object to or may even applaud, this ban, which occurs anyway on private territory. But that is not the issue here. If the blog owner wishes to moderate None for other comments that are rude or irrelevant rather than opinion then he should go ahead, and state his objections and perhaps give her some warning about this too. It’s his blog and he is responsible for its public face.

But a non-debatable enforced APOLOGY for ‘wrong-think’? On Catallaxy? This is Sword of Damocles stuff, hanging over all genuinely held and widely debated opinion here now. It becomes difficult to comment here now in good faith. I feel I am treading on eggshells. Other regulars I have personally discussed this matter with feel that too. The fun has rapidly disappeared too, which is a loss. Catallaxy has always been so good at maintaining a light touch.

I’m writing this here now for the public record, because you don’t have to apply to read this blog, thus it is public in that sense. I’m signing my name to say the owner’s behavior in this instance doesn’t stand for me, and for the things I believe in on what is otherwise a commendable site. I also hope that it comforts None to read this here if she still lurks, and to know that the women on Catallaxy especially are both dismayed and hurt that she has been fairly brutally strong-armed by a powerful man from whom we might expect better. Women are not men. We are all in agreement with that on Catallaxy. Women cry when men don’t, even as we rise to fight injustices done to us. Women are few enough on this blog, and robust women we are in general. A blog consists too of its commenters, not just its owner, of their time and intellectual energy, so I think it is fair that commenters can have advisory input into a blog’s management.

After a second bad night worrying about this, about how to act according to my principles, I have discussed this post with Cassie via email and she supports it entirely.

The world will know that good women have spoken and support a sister pulled down.
If this post gets disappeared, I’ll write a bigger and better one for Quadrant Online.
An earlier comment by areff suggests that he hasn’t been too happy about the peremptory and unjust banning of None either. As if there isn’t enough failed justice in the world, we are now eating our own.

In the 1940s some in Canberra were not fully supporting the war effort.

Indeed. How many Spitfires and Hurricanes were flying in defence of northern Australia in early 1942? Given the Battle of Britain had seen them defend southern England quite nicely they would have been an ideal choice.

    The answer is none.

Instead, the only air defence was flown by the United States.

That is exactly the issue. Blog management of any blog, not just this one, can ban people for any reason or no reason, and are certainly not compelled to justify it.

‘The women on Catallaxy especially are both dismayed and hurt that she has fairly brutally been strong-armed by a powerful man from whom we might expect better.’

I only see your name at the end of this dirge, and not all the other women here you’ve just characterised as weak, flailing fragile creatures who deserve special treatment.

To repeat: I neither applaud nor condemn the banning of None, who clearly if you had your way would be canonised as a martyr by the weekend.

She was on thin ice. Everything led to men lusting after adolescent girls. Management don’t need reasons.

KYIV. Oct 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden received $900,000 for lobbying activities from Burisma Group, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada member Andriy Derkach said citing investigation materials.

Derkach publicized documents which, as he said, “describe the mechanism of getting money by Biden Sr.” at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine’s press center in Kyiv on Wednesday.

“This was the transfer of Burisma Group’s funds for lobbying activities, as investigators believe, personally to Joe Biden through a lobbying company. Funds in the amount of $900,000 were transferred to the U.S.-based company Rosemont Seneca Partners, which according to open sources, in particular, the New York Times, is affiliated with Biden. The payment reference was payment for consultative services,” Derkach said.

He also publicized sums that were transferred to Burisma Group representatives, in particular Hunter Biden, a son of the former U.S. vice president.

The blog owner thought otherwise, found the opinion offensive to his understanding of matters, demanded an apology, and when it was not immediately forthcoming, he effectively banned the commenter. To return, she MUST issue an apology. In other words, she should recant on a sincerely held opinion.

None said that Tim Wilson does not stand up for freedom of speech.

None offered that opinion by providing a number of examples where she felt that Tim Wilson’s ACTIVITIES had seemed far more to arise from a self-serving of his own interests rather than any concerted efforts to improve the freedom of our in general. His work on the AHRC was a particular bone of contention. Naturally, all of this is debatable, and much debate was later added by those appalled by Sinclair’s immediate requirement of an apology from None for holding this opinion.

I have kept my Record of Events to more abstract terms because I am concerned with principle rather than individuals. I am however concerned with individuals when it comes to the matter of how a woman known to us may process what seemed to me to be rather hostile treatment. Making what I suspect was a great effort given her usual excitable style of argumentation, None kept admirably calm and firmly reiterated her take on Tim Wilson (ironically elected to champion free speech) as a validly held opinion for which she owed no apology to Sinclair or others on the blog. I would have been flushed and crying later. I cannot speak for None, but I can hazard a guess she was very upset. Being abruptly banned from a place many regard as intellectual home ground can have a physiological impact, especially on women.

Explain to us what individual rights are?

I tell you what, Imploder. I will answer this question, but here on in I expect you to begin answering questions too, you dishonest, dissembling lunatic.

Individual rights mean that a person has a right to a peaceful life, free from regime harassment. A person has a right to being free to pursue his or her life quests, which is also unencumbered by the governing regime. Also, a person has a right to his or her property without interference from the regime.
No one can bestow these rights because they are natural rights afforded to all. Yes, they are given by God – even if you don’t believe in God. 🙂

    I don’t call myself a libertarian.

Of course you aren’t. Now stop trolling and fuck right off.

None has done nothing wrong, apart from expressing an *opinion* (as opposed to fact) Sinc disapproved of.

That’s not quite true, Delcon. For some weeks None has been growing increasingly belligerent towards other Cats who happened to have a different point of view to her. Eventually Sinc requested, not demanded but requested, that None tone down the sometimes quite obnoxious vitriol she had started to dish out.

Rather than take the hint, None doubled down and started abusing Sinc for daring even questioning her right to be obnoxious as she wanted, towards whoever she wanted, whenever she wanted. Sinc’s requests for civility on her part became ever sterner, and None’s attacks on both Sinc and other posters, increased. That situation continued to escalate for over two ot three weeks.

I think Lizzie means, my interpretation, is that the demand for an immediate apology was somewhat overbearing over such a small issue, that perhaps would not have been demanded of a male blogger as a lady may capitulate more easily.
If a male poster said the same opinion about Tim Wilson, would they get the same treatment, so to speak.

  73. Oh come on

  90. M0nty – It would be a breach of the treaty to place US troops in a position where conflict with Turkey would be likely to take place, which sure as eggs would be the case if Turkish troops attacked the Kurdish units the US forces were embedded with. Therefore Trump de-embedded them.

If as a result of Trump’s actions the alliance between Turkey and the US is breached then Trump could be legally impeached.

Bruce, this is still a moronic talking point. No, it’s not a breach of NATO treaty to put US troops in potential harm’s way of a sudden conflict. Why do you think America has had military bases dotted all over the world on foreign soil for fifty years or more, including in most EU nations? Don’t come the raw prawn.

In your scenario, Turkey would effectively be declaring war on the US, and of course Trump would not be impeached. Which is why embedding those troops is a classic blocking manoeuvre, which is the sort of thing that smart world leaders do. De-embedding them starts a war. So much for Donald the Dove!

  102. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Stimpy, there is a very good article in Quadrant magazine this month about exactly what you have just done. Deliberate misrepresentation and obfuscation by removing an item from its general context. The article is titled “Words as Weapons, Words as Smokescreens”, and it’s by Nicholas Parsons. Even more pertinent is Sam Leith’s piece ‘You know what I mean – so don’t pretend otherwise’, in this week’s Spectator Magazine, about how ‘decontextlised fragments’ become ‘textual objects rather than part of a conversation ‘ and become used by opponents to twist meaning in arguments.

Hence: a few uncircumcised Joosh men does not invalidate a general observation about Joosh traditions.

Such literality. Autists are prone to it.
A friend of mine once gave a gee up to a young man sitting shortly for the HSC. Time now for you to get on your bike, he said concerning the young man’s lack of studious intent.

    Dear Sinc
On December 2017, an Amendment to the Marriage Act was moved in Parliament, to protect religious freedoms (and, to anyone who doesn’t realise it, religious freedom and freedom of speech are one and the same).
Here is what the hansard says, that your champion for free speech, Tim Wilson, had to say about this Amendment:

Mr TIM WILSON (Goldstein) (17:15): I rise to say that I cannot support this amendment, very much in the spirit of the remarks that have already been made by the Leader of the House.

So, Tim Wilson stood up to speak against protection for freedom of religion, which, IMO, means he stood against freedom of speech.
So I hereby re-iterate, based on the above, None’s position:
Tim Wilson is no friend of freedom of speech.
I will not apologise (even if I change my opinion about the above, just because I don’t think *anyone* should apologise for expressing their opinion), so don’t bother asking me to.
BTW, this is what Abbott said in that debate:

Mr ABBOTT (Warringah) (16:49): I’m very happy to support the amendment that’s been moved by the member for Corangamite—very happy indeed.

The guy *you*, Sinc., called “Freedom of Speech traitor”, namely Abbott, supported this amendment to protect religious freedoms (i.e., freedom of speech), which your friend, namely, Tim Wilson, opposed. Now, what would that, logically, make Tim Wilson?
Is your comment about Abbott being “a free speech traitor” any more “true” (as much as it is ridiculous to judge such opinions as “true” or not) than None’s, which was (to the effect that) Tim Wilson being one? So, do you, Sinc. need to apologise based on the above?
Feel free to ban me at your pleasure.

    Monty

The onus was on Trump to say no when Erdogan asked him to move those troops. If he had said no, then the bombings would not have happened, and Erdogan would have done nothing. The war is a direct result of Trump’s action.

Who elected the US as custodian of the Syria/Turkey border?

Congress can authorize military ventures, just because they have been self serving enough (over very many years) to instead allow Presidents to do so they avoid any blame doesnt stop them from doing so now.

Why doesnt the US congress follow its procedures and commit US troops to a possible war with Turkey?
    https://history.house.gov/Institution/Origins-Development/War-Powers/

Id pay money to see Occasional-Cortex & Bernie have to line up and vote for a potential war involving US troops on the say so of Nanna Pelosi.

Declarations of War and Authorizations for the Use of Military Force

Since 1789, Congress has declared war 11 times, against 10 countries, during five separate conflicts: Great Britain (1812, War of 1812); Mexico (1846, War with Mexico); Spain (1898, Spanish-American War, also known as the War of 1898); Germany (1917, World War I); Austria-Hungary (1917, World War I); Japan (1941, World War II); Germany (1941, World War II); Italy (1941, World War II); Bulgaria (1942, World War II); Hungary (1942, World War II); and Rumania (1942, World War II).14 In each of these 11 instances, the President appealed to Congress for authorization either in person before a Joint Session or in a written request.15
Far more common, especially in the modern era, have been congressional authorizations for the use of military force (AUMF) abroad. Historically, AUMFs have been much narrower in scope and much more limited than formal declarations of war, such as when Congress gave the President clearance to protect American ships against French aggression in 1789 and against Tripoli’s navy in 1802. After World War II, however, AUMFs became much broader, often granting Presidents sweeping authority to engage America’s military around the world.16 Take, for example, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution of 1964. As communist forces in Vietnam took increasingly militaristic actions against U.S. forces, Congress authorized the President, in sweeping but vague language, “to promote the maintenance of international peace and security in southeast Asia.”17

In fact, despite engaging in conflicts in places like Vietnam and Iraq over the last 70 years, Congress has not declared war since 1942. Rather, the individual congressional AUMFs have been interpreted “as fully empowering the President to prosecute the wars,” according to law professors, Curtis A. Bradley and Jack L. Goldsmith.18 Although the concept of the AUMF has existed since the start of the Republic, the specific use of the term became commonplace in the 1990s during the Gulf War.

Cowardice by the elected reps to take action they traditionally (till the end of WW2) had and instead empower the President.

All but two were from your first essay.

The one where you spoke on behalf of an entire gender, and made very strong inferences that they be handled with particular care.

I wish to make it clear that I speak only for me. If someone else claimed to speak for all men on the Cat* on any topic, my response would be far more vigorous.

*Almost said ‘Cat men’. Cat men. That’s just silly.

‘this is not a gender debate’

Like the Lawyer on Teh Dumb who couldn’t win the ‘female leadership’ debate: “more females are entering Law than males… we have in NSW a female Premier, a female Opposition leader; the most successful business person in Australia is a woman and we have a female head of state in the Queen…”

Response from the female panelistas: “but they’re the elites! (cackle, cackle, cackle…)”

This is not a gender debate. The key issue is freedom of speech

Bespoke, I quite like this quote from Sam Leith, reference above. Apply it to your reality.

You have to do the work of interpretation, in other words – not only in terms of your own language but how you read that of your opponents. And if our political discourse is to survive, you damn well have to do it in good faith.

In other words, we do have to try to understand each other. And not just in language, but in motivations and in actions. It is of course a moral enterprise. It has to be.

Have to go now and feed Attapuss. Double click on my Gravitar to see how sweet he was was as a kit.

    Something worth watching on Netflix.

3 Series, each circa 8 episodes. ‘The Last Kingdom’, based on the novels of Bernard Cornwell about England’s wilder men in the ninth century. Blood, guts, gore and action. Vikings redux.

Gee this is a bit close to home: Indonesian security minister Wiranto stabbed in ISIS linked attack

Indonesia’s security minister Wiranto was being treated for a stab wound to the abdomen on Thursday night after he was attacked by two suspected ISIS sympathisers in Pandeglang Regency, a notorious centre of Islamic extremism with links to the Bali bombings.

The 72-year-old former Indonesian general was airlifted to Jakarta’s Gatot Subroto hospital shortly after the attack, which occurred just before noon and as he was preparing to leave Mathla’ul University, 90 minutes west of the capital.

A Banten police officer, Daryanto, and another local man sustained injuries to the back and chest as they attempted to pacify the assailant.

National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said the Co-ordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs was returning to his car after opening a new university hall when he was attacked. Amateur footage shows Wiranto, in green and blue batik shirt and traditional black topi hat, falling to the ground after being approached at the passenger side door of an official black SUV as his aides rush to assist and police wrestle his attacker to the ground.

He was rushed to the local Menes Medical Centre before being airlifted back to the Indonesian capital with injuries suspected to have been caused by scissors.

“We have brought in two people, one man and one woman. They are being questioned by Banten police,” General Prasetyo told reporters Thursday.

“So far, from what we have received from Banten police, we suspect the man has been exposed to radical ISIS ideology.”

“Banten police will be assisted by (counter-terrorism unit) Densus 88. We want to find out their motives and background,” he added.

General Prasetyo said the minister’s security detail had followed standard operating procedures but “public officials who want to interact with the people/community can do so”.

The two suspect assailants, both 21-years-old, were later named by police as Fitri Andriana Binti Sunarto from central Java and Syahril Alamsyah, alias Abu Rara, from North Sumatra. Little else is known of the couple.

But regional terrorism analyst Sidney Jones said Pandeglang regency had been a centre of Islamic extremism dating back to the 1950s and the Darul Islam movement, a group dedicated to establishing an Islamic State in Indonesia.

Pandeglang was the birthplace of Iwan “Rois” Dharmawan, a field coordinator for the 2004 bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta who helped organise the 2016 central Jakarta attacks from his death row cell in the maximum-security Nusakambangan prison in Central Java.

“Ring Banten, a militant factio of Darul Islam based in Pandeglang and Serang, also participated in the 2002 Bali bombs,” Ms Jones said.

The group had since split, with one faction pledging allegiance to ISIS in 2014. That same year a Ring Banten member and former minor figure in the Bali bombings became one of the first Indonesians to die fighting for ISIS in Ramadi, Iraq.

Several other Ring Banten members have since been arrested for involvement in the Indonesian Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an Indonesian ISIS affiliate believed to be behind the 2018 Surabaya suicide bombings by several radicalised families and their young children.

General Wiranto’s 2016 ministerial appointment by President Joko Widodo was highly controversial because of unresolved accusations that he presided over serious crimes against humanity in East Timor during his time as Indonesia’s armed forces chief.
