Inspiration for Victorians

I’ll definitely make sure I see this. The Michael Herbig-directed film tells the true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families who escaped East Germany to freedom in a home-made hot-air balloon in 1979.

Hollyweird will remake it with an all-grrl cast, who use the balloon to break into East Germany.

Should be compulsory viewing in all schools as a lesson on the horrors of socialism in its purest/basest form.

    And go where?

I saw it last week…….very good film and both entertaining and uplifting. However I walked away somewhat uneasy and pondered the reality that we are now living in a time where, here in the west, socialism in all its guises and with all its various accessories, is not only fashionable with the young but we also have our very own Stasi apparatus running amok through our institutions….you will be denounced and erased if you dare to question and if you dare to go against the current zeitgeist of political correctness and leftist thought….particularly if you dare to speak out against the sacred cows of LGBTQRSTUVS, immigration, the religion of pieces and so on. Look at what has happened to Margaret Court……they are attempting to erase her from history.

The East German streets, homes and clothing in that clip look a lot better than when I visited east Germany.

    No you won’t.
I know what you are trying to say and I know it hasn’t stopped you speaking up.

Can somebody tell me what a “hammered on Twitter” really does to you?

    Nothing.

But that wasn’t real socialism! Certainly not the kind the greens want to implement. It will work better next time than what happened in East Germany.

You’ve missed it: it played in the German Film Festival. About the last German film that ran on general release was Das Boot

Why would you want to leave the
Peoples Decromatik republic , ?you would lose your place in the waiting list for a glorious plastic Trabantand be exposed to exploitation by ruthless capitalists .

Bemused is right, where to go? The rest of Australia isn’t much better and looking around the world all I can see is lefty messes everywhere.

    Dr Fred
Your Trabant will be ready 21st November 2025.
You wont be able to pick it up until the afternoon because your plumber is coming in the morning.

“Get stuck into the Cretins and have fun.”

    Struth…I do …all the time.

I throw it back…twice as hard and I enjoy it. It’s very satisfying.

I watched a documentary about it years ago. Not sure about the needed the added dramatization to make movie about it.

I would have my sewing machine out this second if I had somewhere better to go. Unless we get some kind of circuit breaker we seem doomed to continue the downhill slide into utter chaos.

  16. yarpos

The really funny thing is people in other States convincing themselves they really all arent in the same mess.

I guess the interstate migration numbers tell the story.

  17. Bosnich

I spent three years in the RAF during the early sixties in what was then West Germany. In those days the British forces employed large numbers of German civilians a majority of whom were Displaced Persons from what had become East Germany.None that I spoke to had any desire to re locate to the “Workers Paradise” on the other side of the wire.

  18. TBH

I remember seeing a documentary about this some time ago. What a remarkable story and it always makes me smile when I hear socialism or communism apologists, because the East Germans were trying really, really hard to not let people *out*, not preventing them from coming in.

Billy P how come Dr Fred gets his Trabant so quickly? Is it because his surname is Lenin?
