Red alert, we are warned! Tony Thomas on the red/green capture of councils

No respite in  sight, the culture war is being waged day and night on every front. This is the local council strategy.

You’ve probably never heard of Bryony Edwards  but she inspired Darebin which then inspired the (Western) world. She and long-time colleague and partner Adrian Whitehead now run a body called CACE – Council Action in the Climate Emergency – to help councils and agitators follow through on their declarations with supposed planet-saving action. (To hear Ms Edwards and other Darebin councilors and lobbyists detail in their own words how easy it is to get elected and what to do when seated, go here. The embedded audio files are most instructive.)

And so it goes, leftism poisons everything it touches.

Take away concillor renumeration no taxpayer money for them personally deprivation of funds usually destroys socialism they are a grasping greedy bunch invariably ,nothing for nothing from the left .

    O’Sullivans Law:

O’Sullivan’s Law states that any organization or enterprise that is not expressly right wing will become left wing over time.

It’s a given since lefties are herd animals and fanatics for whatever the current fad is. Righties are like cats and just want to be left alone. So councils end up being controlled by the Left, especially the staffers.

The “never waste a crisis” dictum strongly suggests that “naming and shaming” by the federal government of hazard reduction deniers and recalcitrants should extend to local councils.

So much of the idiocy and bastardry that stops people from doing sane things to protect themselves and their homes and businesses is the handiwork of local councils – and not just in rural and regional areas, there’s the zealotry of tree protection laws in suburbia which puts many at increased danger from fire and storms.

Calling out the worst offenders might prompt more people to take an interest in local council politics, and at least think twice before voting for Green/NIMBY and (fake) “independent” candidates because it makes them feel good about themselves, and because they assume (quite wrongly) that there’s nothing much at stake.

Good idea Prof., but there’s an additional factor.

For Labor types local councils are a stepping stone to the much greater troughing opportunities in State or Federal politics. They might well endure no remuneration (except “expenses” and graft) just to burnish their maaaaaateship credentials.

We should implement your suggestion as a matter of urgency, but to do the job properly we also need to get the snouts out of the trough in Spring Street and Canberra.

    O’Sullivans Law:

Even some bodies specifically set up as conservative or right wing have been captured by the left.

There was one organisation in the U. S. (I can’t recall the name) whose raison d’être was conservatism, but was infiltrated to a great extent by leftists, until the head or founder of the organisation realised what was going on. Fortunately, he was able to clean out all the leftists before they completely took over.

  6. Some History

Bryony has been campaigning on global warming since she was nine years old and began stuffing rubbish up car tail pipes to reduce pollution. Since 2013 Bryony has run a number of times as a Climate Emergency candidate for State and Local Government elections and regularly speaks about the Climate Emergency, supporting CACE campaigning efforts in Western Australia and elsewhere.

    Ain’t that the truth.

And they never met a costly compliance regulation that they didn’t like. The more draconian, the better.
They practically mewl with excitement when they see a householder or landowner fined or imprisoned.

Anyone who refers to “the planet” = disaster.

    Unless they’re talking about Mars.

I hope no-one’s forgotten what happened a few years back when the Inner West Sydney Council (then Leichhardt Council) had a real chance to display their dedication to wokeness….

OK, so a proposal was put before council to have the vast parklands of the former Callan Park psych hospital….directly on an arm of Sydney harbour, slap-bang in the middle of woke central inner-west Sydney….turned into a centre for Syrian Refugees. The refugees would live there until they were thoroughly-prepared to be farmed out into the “broader community”, well away from the inner west of course, but still with the chance to display one’s wokeness for a few months…or maybe years…

Anyhow, the vote was unanimously rejected out of hand by all the Greens and other assorted trendoids and it has never been heard of ever again.

So…virtue-signalling day-in day-out…but not in our backyard! Obviously these scumbags with big eye-glasses upon smug nasty faces are not idiots, since they understand that their constituents would promptly toss them out if they’d dared follow through on the virtue-signalling…and here they are again. Suffering for the cause is for other people as far away from the f*ckwit instigators as possible. Disgusting and loathsome creatures gotta disgust and be loathsome I suppose…..it’s all they know.

  13. Herodotus

The west’s freedoms become the achilles heel which the left exploits. Destruction follows.

  14. Herodotus

A ruthless left will only be defeated by an equally ruthless right.

  15. In the end, the Left will eat their own because they can’t work together indefinitely. Just look at what happened to the Greens in Victoristan and what’s her face in the federal scene. The Left’s problem is that they will always be at risk from an even more radical Left (see the Democrats in the US) and then the internecine war begins.

All that needs to be done is to keep making fun of the Left and their loony ideas and they start fragmenting. Consider Jo Nova’s recent post about climate change, now some on the Left want to revert back to global warming because climate change doesn’t sound dire enough.

The answer of course is not only is local government councillors not paid, any state or federal backbencher cannot earn more than the median gross wage. Kill the career path. Kill the very idea of politics as a career. Make it a vocation. Focus on the little people.

We need to work out a way to fix this that doesn’t involve civil war.

  20. struth

Dot and myself have argued about the existence of councils.
yes, they can exist, of course, but they are just a department of State Government at best.
You can have councillors, Mayors, all the bullshit.
What they cannot do is make Laws.

They are not a Parliament and their Laws are not proper Law passed by the governor.
Your rates are non negotiable and therefore a tax, rent on the land you thought you owned but of course don’t.
This is why I am constantly on about the UN.
It dictates councils must implement agenda 21 through 2030 , Paris and all sorts of Bullshit.
Many of the councillors implementing this shit are just little totalitarian careerists, who would force implementation of anything, eco or not, for the feeling of power and to advance themselves.
yes there are a lot of green lefties in councils, because it pays them to be.

They warn of ‘toxic personalities and spies’, oh it’s all so familiar to anyone with even a passing knowledge of history.
These people have always been around and always will be.

Agee – it’s time to act.

I think the following H.L. Mencken quote sums up the current situation:

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

At an individual level I challenge these lunatics out at every opportunity. Ask questions and demand specific answers – most can only respond with lefty slogans. The silly buggers have no idea what life will be like if the Marxists win and are blinded by virtue signalling celebs.

the former Callan Park psych hospital….directly on an arm of Sydney harbour, slap-bang in the middle of woke central inner-west Sydney….turned into a centre for Syrian Refugees

A mate of mine who lived in Balmain at the time used to sagely observe “there’s no racism in Balmain because there’s only one race”. No prizes for guessing which race, of course.

  24. Spurgeon Monkfish III

If I had my way, I’d abolish local councils. There’s no logical reason for their existence and they serve no useful purpose whatsoever.

  25. Mother Lode

And so it goes, leftism poisons everything it touches.

More to this, as each institution is turned to its new purpose, it ceases to serve its proper purpose.

Councils are a joke. Footpaths broken and uneven, branches of trees obstructing the path so you must duck and weave, smaller bins with draconian regulations you must obey but which the council leaves scattered and upturned in its wake, parks poorly maintained and with kids play equipment removed because of insurance costs, ravenous parking meters, and of course they are policing residents to make sure they are serving the council agenda.

    Lefties.

  26. areff

the former Callan Park psych hospital

A bloke I worked with, Peter Mahoney, was a dipsomaniac who ended up in Callan Park after a particularly extended bender.

After a week or so and feeling somewhat better, he was sitting in the grounds and commented to another patient that the benches needed a coat of paint and he was thinking of organising an inmate working party to spruce them up.

“Volunteer work? You can’t do that!” exclaimed his fellow nutter. “They’ll think we’re mad.”

Peter, long dead, used to tell that story against himself, so he wouldn’t mind it being recounted now.

  27. Tim Neilson

Are you thinking of the ancient Greek sort?

Top three (or whatever) vote getting candidates get their names put in a hat and the winner is drawn out?

That would help a lot, because it would make “career Parliamentarian” a very dicey vocational prospect indeed, even in a supposedly “safe” seat.
    Very good.

Excellent! Yes, kill the career path by setting a minimum age qualification for councillors (and MPs). After all, they used to be called “Aldermen” ie Elders of the locale with maturity and wisdom.

So minimum age of 40 for councils and 50 for MPs PLUS a CV representing real life experience.

All these young turks seeking to use council positions as stepping stones to the bigger trough would have to:
    a) gain at least 15-20 years of real life experience in a job or running a business
    b) face at least two local elections before they could “advance” to other political fora
    c) wait until their wisdom catches up with their age before becoming Cabinet ministers (indeed, wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone).

Except that we already complain about the remoteness of State and Federal MPs who are totally out of touch with “where the real people are at”.

Abolishing local government would only entrench the great distance between the snouts in the trough (them) and the fillers of the trough (us).

  30. Old Lefty

The really depressing thing is that, when they are not into woke Greenleft ideology, too many of them are as corrupt as all buggery.
