Had a chat with a medical specialist today re novel coronavirus.

He said they’ve been expecting this for years and a quarantine regime for people flying in from China should have been set up early on as a precautionary measure.

I guess our CMO was left out of the loop.

VicPol arrest man for standing under the clocks at Flinders Street Station while draped in an Australian flag.

Be interesting to know if charges were laid and how the courts handled it.

That we have’t heard anything further (?) suggests he was released without charge.

After the coppers kept him locked up for several hours…

This video has been around since the day after Australia Day and I shared it on my Spacechook page. Somebody commented that the guy is “Ericson” or something who is a bit of a stirrer. However, stirrer or not that whole thing is farsical. Avi Yemeini at least had the “Act” in his pocket when the cops tried to move him along and he warned them if he was arrested it would be illegal. Later to get arrested for “his own safety” FMD!

I Tweeted this at him several times but yet to get an answer (wasn’t getting my hopes up, I’m one fish in an ocean of many I know for a fact), but Peter Van Onselen, if this is true, has a conflict of interest being hired by various news organisations as an anti-Coalition commentator in our eyes due to the speculation that he worked for Julie Bishop a long time ago and was fired during his probation period by her. For this, he still holds bitter resentment to the Coalition and hence the reason for his commentary. An old entry from the archives dating back to 2010:

    https://vexnews.wordpress.com/2010/02/19/scrutiny-peter-van-onselens-greatest-misses-revealed/

Anyone know if there’s truth to this?

Basic detention centre protocol was everyone in “separation” for up to a month for initial screening and health checks.
So unless that changed most of what you would want is allready there. Basic hospital without an icu would be the main deficiency.
From memory we had typhoid, tuberculosis and a number of minor diseases segregated out of initial intakes.
Christmas islanders would be pretty grumpy though at being used as a plague town.

We are writing to you in relation to the recent outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus in the Hubei Province, China.

If you have visited mainland China during the holidays, it is imperative that you do not send your child/ren to school until they have been back in Australia for no less than fourteen days. You should be on the alert for fever related symptoms or respiratory symptoms . These include a cough, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, a sore throat, or a runny nose. Please visit your local GP if these symptoms are present.

    School just sent me this.

Mitch – Soon that will become very unlikely short of a collapse of civilization (which is certainly possible).

The rapidity of analysing this virus shows just how extraordinary the advances in bioscience have been in the last decade. Give it another decade and a vaccine will be produced within weeks of first identification. Or a treatment that will slow or stop it, eg like for HIV.

In feathered news, I am watching two very naughty juvenile kookaburras operating on drippers into my standard cumquats. They seem to think the black tubing as some sort of snake or worm, so have pulled them out and are trying to “kill” the spikes.

And now they are onto some large sedum leaves that look like pieces of meat.

    Worse than toddlers.

  42. old bloke

Is there any information available yet about how long the virus remains active outside of a host system? Were the Chinese developing it so that it could be sprayed on large population centres from an aeroplane? That would be a preferable way to take out an enemy state without bombing them and destroying their infrastructure.

  45. Knuckle Dragger

    Mater,

I have yet to see the footage of the flag bloke being pinched.

However, and of course based on watching eleven seasons of Law and Order, I will say this:

The only possible arrestable offence would be for inciting the commission of an offence. In this case, the incitement would equal the provocation of the crowd to assault him.

But – a) that’s stupid, and b) it’s like charging a chick with a revealing going-out ensemble on with incitement if she walked into an alley behind a pub full of horny footballers and got fixed up.

    Senseless.

You can’t incite someone to commit a summary (minor) offence like riotous behaviour.

There might – MIGHT – be a provision somewhere that lets them move someone on for breaching the peace, which might gel with the rosters inserting him into the van, taking him away and letting him go later; but if I was them I’d be wheeling in the brawler van to take the muppets away instead.

Sorta sounds like a solution of both convenience and laziness to me.

  46. calli

Okay. Just saw the footage, courtesy of stix’s link.

Yup. Breach of the peace was the given reason. You can (apparently) move someone on for that, or a potential breach of the peace.

    However.

The footage in that link didn’t show anything remotely approaching a breach of the peace, potential or not. Being kind, I suppose he could have spent the previous half hour yelling ‘fuck off Asians and mudcats’. If he’d done that, then maybe. Not yes, but maybe. If there was drama then and there, which there wasn’t.

What he got put into wasn’t a divvy van or a brawler. It’s known in trade as the ‘ice cream van’, and it’s operated by a crew of flunkies that get sent to wherever because they’re not good enough to (allegedly) operate with competence at an actual station.

Number of cops = seven by my count. I don’t know what they were expecting, but they were certainly called there by the boss.

Which brings me to – the boss, ie the bloke talking to flag boy at the start of the footage. A Senior Sergeant, which I am told is a symbol of awesomeness, and generally the bloke who gives the orders and knows what’s going on.

These blokes have usually been around forever, run big stations and everyone in them and usually only go out and about to get a feed at the appropriate discount.

So – this entire shitfight is either this Senior Sergeant’s idea, which has just cost him his credibility in the eyes of his troops, or the more likely scenario.

Which is some peanut with a commission seeing the punter under the clocks with his flag, deciding he must Do Something, and directing the on duty Senior Sergeant to do what he did.

Which doesn’t absolve the Senior Sergeant at all for following orders. He should have rightly told the brass to mind their own business and ignored the whole thing.

    Idiots.

    Wuhan wariness

Elsewhere in China, as panic about the outbreak spread, resentment aimed at people from Wuhan was also on the rise.
Provincial authorities around the country have stepped up screening for arrivals from Wuhan. In the coastal Shandong province, more than 69,000 people from Wuhan were detected between January 6 and 27. In Jinan, the provincial capital, 4,266 people from Wuhan were placed under medical observation.

Pictures circulating on mainland social media have shown people building roadblocks to prevent outsiders entering their village or area. The police have said they would crack down on unauthorised roadblocks.

Lists of hotels willing to accept Wuhan people have also been circulating online. There are only a handful of such hotels in some cities, with only two, for example, listed in Kunming, a city with a population of 6.6 million in China’s southwest.

Ma Guoqiang, the Communist Party chief in Wuhan, has urged against discrimination, saying that he hoped people in other provinces would be tolerant of those from Wuhan, given that “everyone may face a similar situation”.

    and aussie magic

Australian health officials have stressed that they have not seen any evidence of human-to-human transmission of the 2019-nCoV novel coronavirus in Australia.

“The man was mostly at home and had isolated himself when unwell but he had gone out to a restaurant called The House of Delight for a short period of time,” Sutton said.

“That restaurant has been followed up with and those who were there at the same time, whose contact details we have, we are following up with.

“But obviously that restaurant is OK to go to now. People don’t need to avoid that area or indeed anywhere else people have been, even if infectious at the time.”

Nicola Gobbo demanded a $30m payout from Victoria Police to enter witness protection and once threw a “hissy fit” when the topic was brought up on the four-year anniversary of her becoming a registered police informant.

The royal commission into the management of police informants heard on Wednesday that Victoria Police held concerns for Ms Gobbo’s mental health while her suitability for appearing as a witness was being assessed. On one occasion, the gangland lawyer stabbed herself with a pen, which she claimed was an accident.

Counsel assisting Megan Tittensor said Ms Gobbo claimed to have single-handedly orchestrated the seizure of up to $80m in assets, according to meeting notes between investigators taken in July 2009.

Ms Gobbo was seeking a percentage of the value of the assets seized or a $30m payout to appear as witness and enter witness protection.

Under cross-examination by Ms Tittensor, Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said he was aware of Ms Gobbo’s claims but said the barrister had been given to “ranting and raving” whenever witness protection was brought up.

“I actually don’t recall attaching any weight to what she was saying here,” Mr Cornelius said.

“If anything, I think I regarded what she was saying here as being, if you like, diatribe or self-interested puff.”

Ms Gobbo was a criminal defence barrister who represented underworld heavies such as Tony Mokbel at the height of Melbourne’s gangland wars.

She was also informing on her clients to Victoria Police and in 2009 transitioned from being a police informant to a witness in the murder case against drug squad detective Paul Dale for the 2004 murders of Terrence and Christine Hodson.

Ms Gobbo never appeared and a year later sued Victoria Police, settling for just shy of $3m.

The commission heard Ms Gobbo threw a “hissy fit” when she was given a letter outlining the requirements of her entering witness protection in September 2009.

Ms Tittensor asked Mr Cornelius if he was aware that Ms Gobbo was particularly upset because the letter arrived on the four-year anniversary of the gangland lawyer’s registration as a police informant.

“I can’t recall the detail of it as you’ve just outlined to me,” he said.

“I have to say I wasn’t surprised that she was upset because we were not acceding to her demands.”

Royal commissioner Margaret McMurdo said the commission was becoming increasingly “Kafkaesque”.

Breaking, from the Oz. “Kafkaesque” is an apt word.

Late to read The Oz today but just read column on the Cashman sacking.

Seems her tenure on the senior advisory group was considered untenable after the AFP identified no commonwealth offence. “Having identified no financial benefit on the material Cashman provided AFP did not probe Pascoe’s ancestry”.

Have said this before but that is pathetic. His receipt of funds based on his Aboriginality is well documented and the above is a ridiculous excuse not to proceed. Cashman would have assumed AFP could easily verify the financial gain.

Cashman is also quoted as saying “there is a group of Aboriginal elites who decide who is Anoriginal and people on the ground have had a gutful of it”. Marcia Langton and Wyatt well fit that description.

Wyatt is a disgrace and this shows there will be no integrity when it comes to the coming compensation, whether the majority like it or not, for Aboriginals for events that happened hundreds of years ago.

Perhaps Wyatt, Langton or Dodson etc can tell us now if you are 1/64th will you get the same money as a full blood ? Or if you are a Pascoe how is your compensation to be calculated.

As we all know “reconciliation” is just a case of “show me the money”. Incidentally how to distinguish who pays, Federal or State ?

Any politician pushing for payments etc should be asked to indicate what they propose as the total funds to be allocated.

another chicom official was just quoted as 10 feb
Miles Guo: Wang Qishan says epidemic will end by February
    By GM35 -2020-01-25 21:2604158
Even based on the fabricated (under-reported) infection numbers published by the Chinese Communist Party, some experts are pessimistic about the possibilities of containing the Wuhan coronavirus.

But Miles Guo said on Saturday during his live-streamed broadcast that Wang Qishan, the Vice President of China, assured a high-level Chinese official that the viral outbreak would be contained in February and asked that person to stay home to relax.

    Wang Qishan’s Optimism & Han Zheng’s Silence
Mr. Miles Guo was also puzzled by Wang Qishan’s remarks. Mr. Guo did not have further information, but he thought that maybe it explained why the Chinese kleptocrats appeared to be nonchalant about the viral outbreak in Wuhan.

Mr. Guo said that Wang Qishan visited Wuhan secretly around the time of the first “sign” of coronavirus. Wang is the top suspect of spreading the deadly virus to remove his opponents within the Communist Party in order to prolong his reign. There have been a lot of resentment of President Xi since the viral outbreak. Wang Qishan, a “hero” during the SARS epidemic 17 years ago, is expected to come to the “rescue” again.

Mr. Guo also said that the CCP top kleptocrats did not respond to any early reports of the SARS-like disease in Wuhan as if nothing had happened. The Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng’s silence perplexed the government of Hubei province who sent highly-classified reports on the outbreak to him in December.

“Contacts of any confirmed coronavirus cases now must be isolated in their home following exposure,” he said.

Anyone in Australia who has been to the Hubei providence is being told to stay at home in quarantine away from work and school for two weeks.

and To guide Australia’s future technology investments, the Government will next month release for consultation a new technology roadmap charting the way forward in areas such as: Hydrogen, Solar and batteries, Transmission and networks, Large-scale energy storage, and Carbon capture and storage.

this nambi pambi approach to the pandemic is just insane. this isn’t a slow burning SARs outbreak, this is as contagious as a common cold with a mortality rate 100 times that of influenza.

our hospital system won’t cope with the surge of patients if this outbreak gets a head of steam. there is no indication whatsoever they are able to get on top of it, if the best they can do is ask people to self-quarantine.

    how interesting

nCoV-2019 codon usage and reservoir (not snakes v2)

Raw “codon adaptation index” (CAI) was calculated for each virus sequence from SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and nCoV-2019 against each of the potential reservoir species using the command line version of CAICal (https://biologydirect.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1745-6150-3-38 16). The codon adaptation index is effectively a measure of how well the codon usage of a particular sequence matches that of a putative host.

A somewhat interesting finding from these analyses is the fact that nCoV-2019 overall has a lower CAI to almost all species tested. I wouldn’t really read too much into that though – we have seen that for other virus genera in the past.

anyone would think this virus hasn’t spent much time in the animal kingdom, the kind of thing you would expect from a lab chimera
