the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has asked for more money to increase its burning operations on the state’s crown lands and ¬national parks.

    Of course they have.
& if they don’t they can’t be held responsible for what the climate change fires do next season.
It’s all a big scam & they have no fucking shame.

Weeelll … what has not been said is that they have asked for additional money in every Estimates lead-up in every one of the past 50 or more years. And, leaving aside some relatively minor boosts following previous really bad bushfire seasons, they only ever got incremental annual increases based primarily on expected cost inflation. That’s the way the government budget and estimates system has always worked, and will always work. So … given this disastrous bushfire season, it is more than likely they will get another one-off boost to conduct more controlled burns in National Parks next year.

And, if Fat Mo © and Co want to do something really useful, they could provide a special allocation to the States for that purpose in their May 2020 Budget.

  5. Leigh Lowe

Leigh, before you buy a stock you have to know what your stop lose is. 20% is way too much to throw away.

The 20% is only against the run-up since last September.
I have had most of the stocks for ages.
That was my point … the 20% is not a loss.
It is a reduction in profits (albeit paper profits) since last September.

How many milliseconds before being offed did they cease being combatants?

Last QT answer was given by Sussan Ley about Ovarian Cancer and was supported by Chris Bowen.
What was noticeable was that all Labor members were sporting the O.C. blue ribbon.
Apart from Ley and Greg Hunt, no frontbencher was wearing the blue ribbon and neither of the women
positioned behind Morrison on the backbench were wearing it either.
No big deal, maybe they aren’t getting much value for money from their staffers and advisers?

  10. So writes a defecating far-left Holocaust denier

Show me where I denied the holocaust, my dear….
By the way, do you defecate?
    Just asking….

  11. candy

There’s too many of those ribbons floating around that they just become another ribbon day, but actually ovarian cancer is so deadly and difficult to detect because it gets mixed up with the usual female’s problems of bloating and pelvic pain etc. It’s the one that really scares women.

Perhaps a blue ribbon is not a bad idea? if ribbons translate into more awareness.

    Mercedes hit for airbag fail

In this Jan. 25 2008 file picture an employee of German car producer Mercedes- Benz controls a Mercedes C-Class as it rolls off the production line in the plant in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart, southern Germany. German carmaker Daimler AG is considering whether to move some production of its Mercedes-Benz C-Class models to Alabama from Germany, a newspaper reported Wednesday,
Consumer regulators have taken Mercedes-Benz to task over recalls on models fitted with potentially deadly Takata airbags.

So … given this disastrous bushfire season, it is more than likely they will get another one-off boost to conduct more controlled burns in National Parks next year.

If it’s such a disastrous bushfire season surely not as much fuel reduction burning is required. Just put a buffer around any prone remaining towns, tell the stupid fucking residents to deal with a few days smoke and voila! Forget about it for a few years. No more money required from tax hoovering xunts and their drum beaters.

  24. As I wrote yesterday…the racist Jooo hating Holocaust denier has a problem with the truth.

Hysterical…no self reflection there from the Holocaust denier. Everyday you come here and abuse people….everyday you make statements you can’t justify. But carry on…you’re a sicko.

  27. Struth

The way to totally discredit yourself as a reliable source is to claim National Socialists as right wing.

Tucker reckons the chunk virus will help bastard Bernie because the chunk virus may create a global recession. I would argue the opposite. Trump has chunk proofed the US economy as much as possible. All he has to do is note bastard Bernie is open borders – chunks can come in unimpeded -, will make the US energy dependent on the ME and the chunks again; Trump has brought back US companies from chunkland while bastard Bernie would send them back. Trump would also raise the commie card and note the chunk virus is a commie virus and that Trump has decreased US dependence on chunk medicine. Plenty of ammunition for Trump to defeat the old commie rat.

If you’re referring to me, I have never denied the holocaust, and would never pretend that it didn’t happen.
It was one of the most evil episodes of the 20th century, and a clear example of totalitarianism gone mad.
Whilst it involved the industrial slaughter of Joos, it also included the elimination of Gypsies, people with disabilities, and other minority groups.
Using it as a weapon in any form of discussion (especially on an anonymous blog) does nothing to respect those who died.
The Nazis referred to the victims as “untermensch”.

  84. Some History

Nurse Ratched is getting more and more of a say. There used to be indoor smoking rooms in hospitals. But, no, they couldn’t keep those. That would be “condoning” smoking. So, as a transition, they built small outdoor smoking shelters. But, no, these would also be “condoning” smoking. So they got rid of the smoking shelters. In fact, they banned smoking on the entire hospital property, i.e., including outdoors. Baseless, vindictive, spiteful bans. Why smokers tend to smoke near buildings is that buildings (verandas) offer the only shelter. The bullies are well aware of that. So they get nastier still. They now want to impose up to £1,000 fines (that’s close to $2,000 Australian) for smoking within 15 metres of buildings. And to further promote division and senseless confrontation, the medical miscreants want to doubly fine (up to $4,000 AUS) staff who fail to enforce the ban. These hospitals run by totalitarians are not healthy places, psychologically, socially, morally.

Hospital smokers face fines of up to £1,000

Doctors have backed plans to enforce no-smoking zones around hospitals with fines of up to £1,000 for breaking the rules.
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) said they were supporting the Scottish government’s fines for smoking near hospitals.
Under the proposed system those caught smoking within 15 metres of a hospital building face financial penalties of up to £1,000 while staff who failed to enforce the ban could have to pay more than twice as much.

Can someone point me to anything reliable where someone has done a NPV analysis of a smoker vs a non smoker to the state.

To the state – the benefits are
    – a smoker pays tax on cigs (A$17bn p.a.)
    – a smoker dies at lets say 70 not 80 – so thats 10 years of pension/health costs not picked up by the state

    The costs are
    – lower productivity in the economy from ill health
    – massive health costs at ~70 before they die of something horrible. But note everyone dies from something. So a non smoker also has massive health costs in the last 10 years of their life. So yes it is probably bigger for a smoker and it is brought forward – but you need to have like with like.

I presume the math would show smokers are massively NPV positive to the state. I would just like to be definitive about it. Want to stick it to people who are anti smoking when they go on and on about their taxes.

Full disclosure, I dont smoke. I just hate the state picking on people. I love booze and I know once the battle against smokers is won, Im next.

Re Bin day. Recycling is a massive scam. The councils have not come clean with the public about how most things we are told to put in the bin are not recyclable from a sustainability perspective let alone a post subsidy perspective. The only thing that is clear cut recyclable is aluminium cans. Possibly clean cardboard too – I’m referring to Woolworths clean cardboard from shipping. Not your cardboard you put in – gets too dirty to be of use.

I try to pre-sort – as it is still a good civic thing to do. But 1 bad bin in your street – ruins the whole batch.

I also do clandestine operations with rubbish. After 10pm if your bin is in the street on bind night – you no longer own the free space in it. I walk around filling it with my crap.

Great pointer. Thanks for the heads up.

They’re fucking arseholes at the local level. We had the front fence remodeled last year and subsequently found out we had to pay an 8k deposit before work commenced to cover for any sidewalk damage etc.

I recall they sent some complicated, unreadable letter vaguely related to this, but I just scanned it without paying much attention and it went straight into the bin. Neither the architect nor the freaking builder told me about this requirement and we had approval to commence.

Anyways, when the work was finished and no damage done, the canutes called my wife telling her there was a $1,600 fine for not complying with the deposit demand. I called them to sort it out and they wouldn’t budge. Of course, I lied and told them I had never received the letter and if they were serious about the deposit, why would they allow the permit to go through in the first place. I told them I’d see them in court. The slobs sent a letter of demand and I ignored it and went straight into the regular bin :-). In December we received a letter saying they weren’t going to pursue the fine. Don’t ever take any shit from these lowlifes at the local government level. They’re always promoting shit like Aboriginal recognition month or bullshit like that, when their only real job is to pick up the trash.

On August 25, 1978, Chinese troops crossed the border to Vietnam to assault officers, women, and local people. Le Dinh Chinh, a local policeman, fought back with his bare hands and was stabbed to death by a group of Chinese. Chinh is thus known as the first Vietnamese soldier who fell in Vietnam’s fight against the Chinese invasion. This incident sent an ominous signal of a looming armed conflict between the two brothers. After a few months of serious and careful preparation for a military ground campaign against Vietnam, in the pre-dawn hours of February 17, Chinese spearheads, supported by 400 tanks and 1,500 artillery pieces, concurrently attacked in the direction of Vietnam’s border provincial capitals, when residents living there were still sleeping.

Canavan all over commie albo zero emissions bullshit; ripping arden another arse (she already has 2).

Albo is a commie rat who won’t cost his crap. He doesn’t have to, it’s been done. It’s called a cost/benefit analysis. Alarmists assume there are now benefits to more CO2 and a warming world (which is all natural).

Albo simply says the cost of not doing it will cost much more than doing it and uses bushfires as an example, which is disgusting. Bandt and Brown did the same thing after the 2009 Black Saturday fires. The 2009 and most recent bushfires are not exceptional, droughts not increasing; the problem is lack of preparation based on green policies. Bandt/brown/albo use the deaths of people which green policies have contributed to justify more green policies.

There have been plenty of cost/benefit analysis. Alarmists don’t consider that extra CO2/warming = benefits: less deaths, more plants, more agriculture; ironically people use less energy when its warm
Albanese’s plan will affect energy, agriculture (livestock reduced by 60%) and transport (no petrol cars).

In 2010 a group of greenies called Zero Carbon Australia devised a plan called the Stationary energy plan which claimed Australia could be entirely powered by renewables by 2020; this plan was just for energy, it didn’t look at agriculture or transport. Barry Brook, the professor for environmental sustainability at Uni of Tasmania is pro nuclear but an alarmist and 2 engineers, Peter Lang and Martin Nicholson, 2 great, sceptical engineers, looked in detail at the greenie plan and agreed, it could be done; with 2 conditions:

Australia would have to use 60% less energy; in effect no power 4 days every week

The cost would be $4.19 trillion; that’s about4 years GDP with every cent spent on renewables; the irony is there is already enough installed renewables in Aust to supply all of Aust’s power IF they worked; they don’t.

A similar global analysis was done by Lomborg in his book, Cool It. Lomborg is an econometric expert and the alarmists won’t debate him. At figure 11, p 41 Lomborg compares doing nothing with doing what albo and the UN want: keeping the temp increase to 1.5C (as if humans can control the global average temp, GAT; FFS).

    Doing nothing:
Cost: $1 trillion (mainly sea level rise (which isn’t happening)
    Benefit: $2 trillion

    1,5C temp increase:
    Cost: $84 trillion
    Benefit: $11 trillion

This is assuming alarmism is real and humans control the fucking temp.

Albo is Australia’s Bernie Sanders and apart from a few people like Canavan, BJ, Kelly, Roberts etc there is no one on the conservative side to call these fuckers out.

They risk their lives on distant battlegrounds, from Syria to East Timor, fighting against terrorism and keeping the peace. But at the same time as they serve Australia’s interests abroad, they must strive to prevent needless loss of life.

Nowhere has the task proved more difficult than in Afghanistan, where the war against an elusive enemy embedded in a civilian population is now approaching its third decade.

Broadly, we should be confident Australia’s troops perform admirably. However, it is now clear the actions of some soldiers should prompt deep introspection about what we expect of our troops.

In his annual report tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, James Gaynor, has revealed worrying new information about a long-running inquiry into allegations of misconduct by the Special Operations Task Group in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2016.

The inquiry by former NSW Appeal Court Judge Paul Brereton is close to completing its report and this week’s update by the Inspector-General has given crucial new details on what it is likely to contain.

The annual report says 55 incidents, or issues relating to alleged breaches of the Laws of Armed Conflict, are under investigation.

They involve “unlawful killings of persons who were non-combatants or were no longer combatants, but also ‘cruel treatment’ of such persons”.

Without leaping to conclusions, the fact that Mr Gaynor has been so explicit about the nature of these allegations suggests he is preparing the public for some bad news. He did not mention these details about the Brereton inquiry prior to today.

Some have questioned whether the Brereton inquiry is justified or necessary. They say civilians who have not experienced the heat of battle should not sit in judgment on split-second, life-and-death battlefield decisions.

In fact, the Inspector-General makes clear that Justice Brereton, who attained the rank of major-general, is not second-guessing anyone. Rather, he is investigating incidents affecting people who were clearly not involved or no longer involved in armed combat.

It is not in the interests of Australia, the special forces or indeed the mental health of veterans for these matters to be swept under the rug. As the Inspector-General says, the inquiry will “provide closure for the many serving and former soldiers who have lived with concerns about the subject matter of these rumours for many years”.

Interesting – the Herald is allowing comments.

    For those mechanically minded.

    TOOLS EXPLAINED

DRILL PRESS : A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL : Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, ‘Oh sh*t’

DROP SAW : A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS : Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER : An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW : One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle… It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS : Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH : Used almost entirely for lighting on fire various flammable objects in your shop. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race..

TABLE SAW : A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK : Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW : A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST : A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER : Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER : A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR : A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER : A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER : Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE : Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

ADJUSTABLE WRENCH: aka “Another hammer”, aka “the Swedish Nut Lathe”, aka “Crescent Wrench”. Commonly used as a one size fits all wrench, usually results in rounding off nut heads before the use of pliers. Will randomly adjust size between bolts, resulting in busted buckles, curse words, and multiple threats to any inanimate objects within the immediate vicinity.

Son of a bitch TOOL : Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling ‘Son of a b*tch’ at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

A number of people have commented on the new Recycling 2.0 introduced by Hobsons Bay Council.

From the information we received the whole thing was predicated of 48% of the contents of the 120 litre rubbish bin being garden and food waste with most of it being food waste. Based on the removal of the garden and food waste the rubbish bins don’t need to be collected weekly.

    Two points on this:
They are saying that there was 60 litres of food and garden waste in the bin, with the majority of it being food waste. Line up 3 10 litre buckets and see how much food waste it would take to fill them. Sounds like crap to me. It seems that people like us with a garden waste bin and no food waste were left out of the analysis.

The second point is they have dramatically reduced the amount of stuff that can be put in the recycling bin. Only plastics 1 and 2 are allowed and no caps, no cardboard milk or juice cartons, no arenol cans and a few other incidentals. They have actually increased the amount of stuff going in to the rubbish bin.

The unintended consequences should be interesting.
