They’re responsible for a policy demonstrably, quantitatively shown to increase the number of people making that decision. So the choice is between a policy that stopped the boats (and hence saved lives) and a policy that doesn’t stop the boats (and costs lives). To spite John Howard, Labor chooses the latter. The only reason they’re comfortable with the death toll is that, to them, hatred of Howard and Abbott is worth the price.
Sure, but the reason for the policy is that we don’t want to deal with the problem or expend the public resources cleaning it up. With regards to their welfare it’s all care but no responsibility. Or at least it should be. There’s no reason for guilt on our part if they put themselves at risk.
CL: you’re wrong about there being no eastern religions pursuing missionary activities in slums. I personally did a bit of voluntary work in such a place – a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Mongolia that wasn’t a missionary in the catholic sense of the word, but they did missionary-like work ie. feeding the poor of the area, taking in abused women, etc; as well as providing a monastery for Buddhist nuns. I know there are many similar places such as this around Asia. Certainly, Theravada (yellow hat) Buddhists don’t tend to do much “missionary” work because of the nature of their beliefs; however, Mahayana (red hat) do because of the additional compassion angle they hold as part of their concept of karma.
As for Tibet, I’m not saying that pre-Mao Tibet was a paradise, but much of the information regarding that period emanates from the Chinese, and I think you need to be very leery about what they claim about the issue. To say they have an agenda would be the understatement of the decade. Furthermore, I’m not sure that you could say Tibet has been massively better off post-invasion, when you consider the impact that it’s had on Tibetan society and culture. It takes more than a few highways and railways to make up for the depredation of the Cultural Revolution, to give but one example of gross Chinese misrule in Tibet, which to Tibetan religion really was the equivalent of thoroughly sacking the Vatican.

Hasn’t this account of events been contradicted by witness statements? For instance, a witness report suggests that in fact Zimmerman was not chasing Martin when confronted, but rather had lost contact with Martin. This was partly corroborated by Zimmerman’s phone conversation with police. The witness then reported seeing Zimmerman approached by Martin and king-hit, and then wrestled on the ground. Whether this is in fact what happened will have to be determined but by why is the disputed report that Les repeats continually reported as if it were a fact? Much of it appears to be nothing more than a concoction of the media.
