Obama’s no carbon tax moment

This is how Greg Mankiw sees it:

As someone who has previously worked for a President, I am fascinated by how the White House staff let President Obama so consistently and so publicly make a false statement. Presidential speeches undergo a painstakingly thorough review process. It seems that there are only three possibilities:

1. The White House staff did not know the statement was false. That is, they did not understand the law the administration was promoting.

2. The White House staff knew the statement was false, but they decided to keep this fact from the President. That is, they let the President unwittingly lie to the American people.

3. The White House staff knew the statement was false and told the President so, but the President decided to keep saying it anyway. That is, the President consciously decided to lie to the American people.

These are the only three possibilities I can envision. None of them reflects particularly well on what has been going on in the White House.

From the Wall Street Journal:

The millions of Americans who are receiving termination notices because their current coverage does not conform to Health and Human Services Department rules may not realize this is by design. Maybe they trusted President Obama’s repeated falsehood that people who liked their health plans could keep them. But Americans should understand that this month’s mass cancellation wave has been the President’s political goal since 2008. Liberals believe they must destroy the market in order to save it.

How long until the lamestream media in Australia report on this?

And how will they spin it so it isn’t The Great One’s fault!

    ‘I know nuthing’

You can’t make a universal healthcare omlette without cracking a few skulls I always say.

Obama gets away with it because the leftist media class allow him to get away with it. They know he lies and they expect him to lie. But, being highly charged political operatives, kinda like the ABC/Fairfax axis here, they are programmed to look the other way and adopt diversionary tactics to protect their leader.

For me the most outrageous thing about Obamacare are the waivers Obama illegally he has granted to his big labour buddies and his crony corporatist mates in business and favours he granted to congress members, their staff and departmental heads where their health care will be subsidised up to 75% by taxpayers.

Totally corrupt. And the media lackies feign outrage like they care.

As The Great One says: The Affordable Care Act is unaffordable and they don’t care.

    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

“But we have to pass the [health care] bill so that you can find out what’s in it….”*

Well, it seems pretty much no one knows what’s in the ACA, so not really surprising that President Empty Chair’s flacks don’t know – because I think they all enjoy an exemption from having to have Obamacare ?

    2. The White House staff knew the statement was false, but they decided to keep this fact from the President. That is, they let the President unwittingly lie to the American people.

Well – based on recent form – that does appear to be the case. The Sun King doesn’t like receiving bad news – so his daily briefing is apparently largely only about the weather outlook for the golf course. This is the guy who was tucked up in bed with his teddy, ‘Reggie’, and couldn’t be disturbed when the definitive 3:00 am call came through that Al Qaeda was storming the US mission in Benghazi. So distilling ‘000s of pages of the ACA to Bambi – not so much.

    3. The White House staff knew the statement was false and told the President so, but the President decided to keep saying it anyway. That is, the President consciously decided to lie to the American people.

See 2. above. You could tell the Sun King a giant asteroid was on a collision course with the Earth, but if he is studying the weather forecast for the golf course – in one ear out the other.

    * the linked WaPo article is of course an apologia for Nancy. Her closing comment just looks splendidly ironic now:

“We’re prepared for every eventuality,” Pelosi said, “including success.”

The left has not yet worked out there is a penalty for lying. Gillard had a lesson in this. Obama hasn’t yet.

They may no longer believe in a vengeful God, but a pissed-off electorate also has some say in the matter.

The Democrats probably still will win the 2014 Congressional elections, because the electorate will forgive liars who give them stuff. Never stand between a food stamp recipient and a bucket of money.

As you’ve noted in the past the Sun King regularly admits he doesn’t know what senior officials are doing, including his speech writers…

…remember yhe way he threw his speech writers under the bus for making him say to business owners “… you didn’t build that…”

I’m surprised that he hasn’t claimed it was a composite promise, in the spirit of his composite girlfriend who he turned into a racist (though she didn’t know it)

    I know nuthing’

He doesn’t have the build to be a believable Barack Hans Shultz-Obama

Hey, if you got a website that doesn’t work work well…you didn’t build that!

As noted in Steve Kates’ mirror-image post:

What a pity that I beat you both by almost 14 hours (9.45pm Tuesday 29, 2013)

    Snap, indeed. 😉

  10. The cracks in the dam wall are spreading, and it may all come unstuck soon. And you know what the code-word for the breach of the Moehne Dam was, don’t you?

  11. Brian of Moorabbin

    perturbed,

Not only that particular code phrase, but the last word of all the people living in the villages that were swept away by the water from the burst dam was “Obummer…”
