What’s the right word for people who believe the planet is warming?

There is about as much evidence that the planet is warming because of human activity as there is that Yuri Geller can bend spoons with the power of his mind. This, too, has been validated by scientists and here is a not untypical example:

Professor Victor Weisskopf physicist who studied under Niels Bohr worked on the A bomb and oversaw the development of European atom smashers.

“I was shocked and amazed how Mr Geller bent my office key at MIT while I was holding it. The sturdy key kept bending in my hand; I can not explain this phenomenon I can only assume that it could relate could relate to quantum chromo dynamics”.

The credulous stupidity of half the population on AGW is something that those of us who have not succumbed to this mania can merely observe but find almost impossible to explain. But like Professor Weisskopf, Professor Michael Mann, the notorious fraud and inventor of the hockey schtick, remains an authority to those with the will to believe.

What we therefore need is a term of abuse for those who help to perpetuate this fraud.

If people who refuse to accept the planet is warming are called “deniers” by those ill-informed enough to be certain about something that still seems very unlikely, then what should we call those who accept climate change in the face of all evidence to the contrary? At the moment “gullibles” is the word I have come up with which I admit is not perfect. Nevertheless, the concept seems accurate even if the word does not. Here is the online definition of “gullible” which includes the synonyms found in bold below so there is something to the concept and it does seem to fit. The example of its usage, shown in italics, is also just as found on the net which also seems to be a perfect fit.

gullible
???l?b(?)l/
adjective

easily persuaded to believe something; credulous.
“an attempt to persuade a gullible public to spend their money”
synonyms: credulous, over-trusting, over-trustful, trustful, easily deceived/led, easily taken in, exploitable, dupable, deceivable, impressionable, unsuspecting, unsuspicious, unwary, unguarded, unsceptical, ingenuous, naive, innocent, simple, inexperienced, unworldly, green, as green as grass, childlike, ignorant

.

As it says here, by definition if you are gullible you are “easily deceived or cheated” and also “easily taken in or tricked”. That is therefore no doubt why such people persistently vote for the parties of the left.

Wait, didn’t they remove gullible from the dictionary?

  2. Andore Jr

Percy, I just checked, it’s still there.

  3. 70s Playboy

Can’t remember where I read it but the term “Warming Enthusiast” (was it Jeremy Clarkson?) has a nice vintage car tone with bonus patronising overtone

  4. 70s Playboy

Percy, I just checked, it’s still there.

Andore – you didn’t really fall for that old one?

  5. I like tautology so “Gullible Dupe” works for me.

P.s. Joanne Nova has been using “gullible” for some years now in the context that it is the opposite of sceptical.

  6. Sirocco

Let’s make it a noun and call them ‘The Gullibles”

  7. Andore Jr

    😉

Playboy did I just double-gullible you?

You sounded so serious Andore – but some people say I’m too trusting

Things always sound better in Italian – how about “clima scemo”?

  11. Ant

Gullible is OK, but it’s only partially adequate.

I have written before of the 3 words required to desribe AGW types: Dreamers, Deceivers & Dummies.

Gullible only applies fully to the first, and only partially to the others.

Dreamers: The ‘hug the koala’ lot who will not waiver in their faith regardless of the evidence before them. It’s their religion.

Deceivers: These people are primarily not gullible. Rather, they’re very sharp being in it for the bucks and/or power and, while some display an element of gullibility in thinking that even if they’re wrong their actions are still environmentally responsible, their primary motivator is personal profit/power. I’d probably throw public adulation in there as well – ie rock star status, as it was with somebody like Rudd.

Dummies: The most numerous and those whose attention will not be grabbed unless the material impact from all the propaganda hits their livelihoods and lifestyles right in the kisser. They’re gullible only insofar as they’re ignorant. Mostly they’re rather rational, I think, but are slaves to the messaging fed to them through all types of media – mostly junk TV, magazines, etc – not to mention the education system.

For this reason reversing the Global Warming Racket can only really ever start with fixing the media. And ‘fixing’ the ABC, they way you would ‘fix’ a dog with a terminal illness, would be a very good place to start.

  12. Mayan

“Chronically phobic bed-wetter” seems to describe the leftist mind quite well.

  13. 70s Playboy

I like tautology so “Gullible Dupe” works for me.

Always remember the National Times and Alex Buzo’s annual tautology award, usually won by the great Rex Mossop – “The man’s mechanical he’s like a machine!”

Ergo – “That greenie is so gullible – he’s almost dupe-like in his credulity!”

  14. Carpe Jugulum

    Climate-Choads, works for me

Jeremiahs? Although I think biblical references would be lost on most people these days

I agree, Ant. But we also need to address our woeful education standards.
I did physics and chemistry at high school in the 60’s. No need for anything more to refute claims like “ocean acidification” and “missing (atmospheric) heat is hiding in the ocean deeps”.

Yet these days people allegedly with university degrees accept such nonsense as “scientific fact”, just because some paid shill like Flannery, Steffen or Chubb claim it to be so.

What the hell do they teach the kids these days, in twelve years of compulsory education?

  17. Percy

Andore – you didn’t really fall for that old one?

I’m glad I walked away after posting, I might have gone into explanation mode. Nice poker face you’ve got there Andore.

  18. Rabz

What’s the right word for people who believe the planet is warming?

Further to Ant’s points above – given the now overwhelming evidence that there is no such phenomenon as “catastrophic human induced climate change”, it really depends on where an individual is situated in relation to the operation of the “climate change industrial complex”.

So, your average suburban idiot who is too stupid and/or incurious to learn more about the scam and accepts what they’re told through the FMIC* is “gullible”.

Someone like Michael Mann is not gullible, they know it’s a huge scam, it’s now on the verge of collapse (possibly through the Steyn action) and there is too much at stake for them, in regards to both “professional reputation” and the ongoing smooth transit of the “climate research funding” gravy train.

As for the politicians flogging the scam and ripping off the public, my greatest venom is reserved for them. Arrogant, wilfully ignorant, criminal idiots who are unfit to be in various legislatures across the globe and who quite frankly, should be languishing in gaol.

    *Via Tom.

The useful idiots: TOBEMs (there’s one born every minute)

  22. stevem

To me gullible suggests a certain level of naiveté which is certainly not merited given the deliberately dishonest tactics they use. I think we need a less forgiving name.

  23. Rabz

Sorry – there’s another important group I omitted – inner urban leftist fuckwits who also know that “catastrophic human induced climate change” is a scam, but use it as an excuse to peddle the worst excesses of socialism as the “solution” – you know the drill – more taxes, more laws, more regulation, massive hikes in fuel and energy prices and of course, reduced personal freedom.

And in many ways, they’re just as culpable as the frigging politicians.

What’s the right word for people who believe the planet is warming?

    God, that’s an easy one.

    IMBECILES (archaic version).

Psychology. (no longer in technical use; now considered offensive) a person of the second order in a former and discarded classification of mental retardation, above the level of idiocy, having a mental age of seven or eight years and an intelligence quotient of 25 to 50.

  25. Percy

    Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming .

    CAGWits?

Too many big words. Best to keep it simple: Fucking Useless Clowns. Or FUCwits if you prefer.

  26. Faye

    CLIMATE CHANGE SUCKER
    Collins English Dictionary
Slang Person who is easily deceived or swindled.

“Sucker” (slang/of the people) is a noun. It immediately brands and insults the believer perfectly.
“Gullible” has all the right meanings but it has no sting. You need a word you can use as a noun.

  27. Eddystone

Jeremy Clarkson has used the term “ecomentalists” to describe hysterical greenies.

I like the implied insult coupled with plausible deniability.

It’s hard to confront someone whose just called you an ecomentalist without digging a politically correct hole for yourself.

  28. Rabz, I was stubbornly holding out for ‘gullible’ but I bow to your superior intellect – “climate change industrial complex” is the perfect fit.

  29. Mr Skeletor

    Suckers is the best.

  30. Fred Lenin.

How about Warmtroopers? Extreme fascist s always like to sound tough, visualise the Inner City Poofters ,in green shirts ,marching to the “Poofter Brown Song” ,the mind fair boggles. Oh and don’t forget the Crack Leso Brigade ,singing”Penny Wong” .

  31. mareeS

I have searched through Roget’s, the OED and my gardening encyclopaedia to find a word for base-stupid-gullible-ignorant-just-plain-dumb-as-a-chook, but I couldn’t find one.

“Green” is the next more stupid word to describe a process that’s so far from rational it’s at the outer end of the universe, along with virgin birth and Allah.

  32. Tom

Gullible clowns for sure, but, to me, they’ll always be The Steve From Brisbanes.

However, I am compelled to acknowledge that, technically, CL is not 97%, but 100% factually correct:

The truly awesome aspect of CAGW is that the subversion of the Western education system and the subsequent neutering of the Western media’s 200-year tradition of scepticism of official information puts the nation-building propaganda of the Third Reich in the shade.

What’s the right word for people who believe the planet is warming? Scientists.

What’s the right word for people who caused millions of others to unwittingly lose their houses, jobs and shirts during the GFC? Economists.

    Dot / Symbol

I did not, and cannot, compare you to Janet Yellen. A symbol tells me nothing about you for comparative purposes. Based on available evidence, I can only compare you to Prince. He used a symbol for a name for a while too – perhaps you are related?

    Where’s the fucking evidence??? GO!!!

The institutions that f#cked up are well documented (both the regulators and the finance industry). Presumably the regulators were holding a gun to the heads of the economists as they progressively developed and traded in dodgy financial instruments with no understanding of the real risks. After all, any sensible economist would not voluntarily allow the GFC to happen would they?

People with training in economics (and too a lesser degree law) dominated both the regulators and the banks / finance houses. Barely a scientist in sight.

Suggest you use ‘Gull’ the second meaning in the Oxford is a noun meaning “A person who is fooled or deceived”.

I read on social meeja (on a Greens page, if that helps) the following claim:

Um yes because we’d want a Mycologist telling us how to regulate banks? How about an Icthyologist? Can Dr Matt Hooper save us from the Carcharodon carcharias as well as another financial disaster?

The institutions that f#cked up are well documented (both the regulators and the finance industry).

No Jim, it was the government. They set the regulations, they forced the CRA rules, they wrote the HUD directives, they ensured FHA PMI was available to any deadbeat (the lynchpin of the NINJA loan), they printed too much cash, they legislated for no recourse loans…how did a worker in the SEC or the banks (say Wachovia) do this?

Please don’t tell us you’re an anti banking crackpot.

Hell no! Everyone has one, and needs one….. like a bum. I’d just prefer they focussed their efforts on transactions relating to actual economic activity, rather than continuously try to play (and beat) markets when there are unnecessary consequences for everyone if they f#ck up. Perhaps a smarter person like you might be able to tell us the % of the total value of transactions that actually relates to real transactions. I suspect it is pretty small.

And no, I wouldn’t want a mycologist regulating the banks. Just economists and lawyers who actually thought about the risks of the markets they were regulating.

I think Heinlein would have called them “marks”.

You mean like lending money to buy or build a home?

rather than continuously try to play (and beat) markets when there are unnecessary consequences for everyone if they f#ck up

They always beat the market because of day trading mugs.

Perhaps a smarter person like you might be able to tell us the % of the total value of transactions that actually relates to real transactions. I suspect it is pretty small.

Quite a lot. Maybe you should see how heavily invested banks are in real estate. This isn’t a good thing.

Maybe you’re too sheltered to realise that banks also have insurance, and this requires the insurer to not only hedge their losses, but to earn capital market returns. Investing in “useless” derivatives and earning equity returns greater than lending our money. A loan book is also an asset with massive risk and so engage in these policies anyway.

The alternative is to expect regular bank failures.

Just economists and lawyers who actually thought about the risks of the markets they were regulating.

No need. The Cayman Islands banks are highly UNregulated, didn’t fail and didn’t need a bailout.

The people who believe the planet is warming are called “scientists“. There is no disagreement that the planet is warmer now than it was 100 years ago.

The people who believe that this is definitely man-made and the only solution is world government and higher taxation are called socialists.

  105. Yobbo

Of course, world government and higher taxation are socialists’ solution to everything, so this latest thing is really just business as usual.

    I quite like Catastropharians too + 1
    Climate Scientologists + 1

Depending on audience. Catastropharian for people who really really want something BAD to happen with the climate so the can feel all warm and gooey inside and possibly, moist with the excitement of being, you know right, and talk about the need to do something.

    Climate Scientologist for the preachers.

There’s some benefit in posting late…..so many great offerings…….so many choices !
    My six penneth :- ” Ecoterd ” or ” Ecoterdologist ” ?
Simple, flows off the tongue, captures the topic & colourfully characterises the target as anally challenged.

The term Ignoranus seems to capture the stupidity and unpleasantness of the warmists.

Damn I thought that I had found an original name in GoreBore because it sounded like a combination if Gore and Goebbels but I find that Bolt has already used it. Bugger.

Jeremiahs? Although I think biblical references would be lost on most people these days

Sadly Playboy, that won’t do, as your Biblical knowledge is somewhat lacking.

Jeremiah was the realist, while all his listeners were kidding themselves that no disaster would befall them.

The metrology of Model T era glass bulb thermometers to present day AWS and satellite data… not much wiggle room to massage the data there, eh?
