    When The Donald Met Barack

Inside the Meetings, the Snubs, and the Beginning of the Transition

WASHINGTON D.C. — President-elect Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump met with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama here at the White House on Thursday, as the president continued his stated committment to a smooth transition of power.

But behind the scenes, the White House took a less friendly approach.

btw, has anyone kept count of the times that Black President Barack Obama could have and should have calmed outbreaks of violent and even murderous rioting, but didn’t?

Because yet again he’s too busy stirring up hateful mobs by insulting the man who The People Elected to be Their next President, and … ahh, I suppose most people do have to see the enemies in their own house, before they can face taking on the next step …

The question of whether Trumpster should appoint a special prosecutor to bag Clinton over the e-mails.
    Touchy one.
It could look vindictive, and damage him for no gain.
What I think he should do is appoint an investigator to establish what happened “so we can learn from it” but give her an amnesty from prosecution for ‘negligent and careless’ behaviour, only allowing the prosecutor to lay charges for ‘wilful and malicious’ disclosure of classified information.
He will absolutely cruel the chances of her and any of her cronies (including Chelsea) of ver holding office, but won’t appear vindictive.

Anti-Trump Grubhub CEO Matt Maloney Sends Email To Employees Suggesting Trump Supporters Should Resign

Matt Maloney, the anti-Trump CEO of Grubhub, didn’t mince words in a post-election email that was sent out to his entire company. Reportedly, the food delivery service’s anti-Trump CEO wasn’t pleased with Donald Trump’s unexpected presidential victory, and he reached out to his employees on Wednesday to reassure them that Grubhub would remain a safe, tolerant, inclusive place to work for those who feel disenfranchised by President Elect Trump’s rhetoric and potential policies.

Grubhub CEO Matt Maloney equated support of Donald Trump and his proposed policies as having a “hateful attitude,” and went on to say that such attitudes have no place at Grubhub. The company’s anti-Trump CEO suggested that Trump supporters, Trump voters or even those who agree with Trump’s social stances should resign from Grubhub. Effective immediately.

Get knotted Mr Maloney. I note you’re trying to establish a presence in Oz. Good luck with that son, mung beans and tofu are not what red blooded Aussies generally consume. Nor do they like up themselves lefties like you.

That article was also just about unreadable.

It was like someone put a 1980s sociology textbook through a shredder, and made a giant papier-mache model of a Lady Part out of it, and then sold it to the Victorian Government for $1.3 million. It will be on display in front of the University of Melbourne for the next six weeks. The opening ceremony was facilitated by Clover Moore, specially invited down from Sydney, who introduced Auntie Beryl to the group of eight lesbians and some puzzled Malaysian tourists who formed the ‘crowd’. Auntie Beryl then performed the secret women’s smoking ceremony. There was a small reception afterwards at which vegan nibbles were served.

Pat Buchanan: MEMO TO TRUMP: EXPLOIT YOUR WIN!

A partial agenda: First, he should ignore any importunings by President Obama to permit passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in a lame-duck session – and let the trade deal sink by year’s end.

On Jan. 20, he should have vetted and ready to nominate to the high court a brilliant constitutionalist and strict constructionist.

He should act to end interference with the Dakota Access pipeline and call on Congress to re-enact legislation, vetoed by Obama, to finish the Keystone XL pipeline. Then he should repeal all Obama regulations that unnecessarily restrict the production of the oil, gas and clean coal necessary to make America energy independent again.

Folks in Pennsylvania, southeast Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia should be shown, by executive action, that Trump is a man of his word. And when the mines open again, he should be there.

He should order new actions to seal the southern border, start the wall and begin visible deportations of felons who are in the country illegally.

Sign the precedent-setting petition supporting President-elect Trump’s call for an independent prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton!

With a new education secretary, he should announce White House intent to work for repeal of Common Core and announce the introduction of legislation to put federal resources behind the charter schools that have proven to be a godsend to inner-city black children.

He should propose an immediate tax cut for U.S. corporations, with $2 to $3 trillion in unrepatriated profits abroad, who will bring the money home and invest it in America, to the benefit of our economy and our Treasury.

He should take the president’s phone and pen and begin the rewriting or repeal of every Obama executive order that does not comport with the national interest or political philosophy of the GOP.

Trump should announce a date soon for repeal and replacement of Obamacare and introduction of his new tax-and-trade legislation to bring back manufacturing and create American jobs.

We need to keep on winning. We need to win more!

Trump refused to allow journalists to travel with him to Washington today for the historic meeting with Obama.

There was a request for a small pool of journalists to travel with Trump, but this was rebuffed by his advisers.

His team has not put out a daily schedule, offered any updates on what he has done with his time or released information on any contact with other world leaders. Russia and London released briefings on conversations with Vladimir Putin and Theresa May respectively.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said the president-elect’s team expects “to operate a traditional pool and look forward to implementing our plans in the near future.”

“This decision could leave Americans blind about his whereabouts and well-being in the event of a national crisis,” said Jeff Mason, White House correspondent for Reuters and the The White House Correspondents’ Association president.

“Not allowing a pool of journalists to travel with and cover the next president of the United States is unacceptable.”

Some DNC staffers started to boo and some told him to sit down. Brazile began to answer, but Zach had more to say.

“You are part of the problem,” he continued, blaming Brazile for clearing the path for Trump’s victory by siding with Clinton early on. “You and your friends will die of old age and I’m going to die from climate change. It is unclear how Dimon responded, said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly. Dimon has said multiple times in the past that he is not interested in the job – most recently in September.

  50. Senile Old Guy says:

    Some good stuff going around:

Meanwhile, President Obama, who has enjoyed his highest approval ratings in years during the final months of the election cycle, saw the election become a referendum on his legacy — a point that Obama himself explicitly made on the campaign trail. His signature legislation, ObamaCare, has become such a disaster that even Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, one of its loudest proponents, called it “unaffordable” after seeing premiums skyrocket an average of 60 percent in the state.

If one wonders how the electorate got this angry, angry enough to elect Donald Trump, ObamaCare is a great case in point. Consider the pattern of Democratic disaster that unfolded after its passage in March 2010. Democrats lost the House in 2010 over it, then lost the Senate in 2014 largely on the same issue (among a few others). Obama has now presided over the loss of Democratic control over the White House, both chambers of Congress, a record number of state legislatures, and after last night, even more gubernatorial offices. Maybe refusing to deal realistically with popular opposition to government-run insurance markets had something to do with that, eh?

  51. John Comnenus says:

in 2018 23 Dem Senators are up for re-election to 8 GOP senators. 10 of the Dem Senators are from States carried by Trump.

If Trump just rolls out his first 100 days as per plan there should be a jobs and investment boom before the mid terms and the GOP could end up with 60 Senators.

Clearly there are a lot of people angry and scared as the antithesis of every modern presidential candidate won and will be our next president.

While demeaning, insulting and ridiculing minorities, immigrants and the physically/mentally disabled worked for Mr. Trump, I want to be clear that this behavior – and these views, have no place at Grubhub. Had he worked here, many of his comments would have resulted in his immediate termination.

We have worked for years cultivating a culture of support and inclusiveness. I firmly believe that we must bring together different perspectives to continue innovating – including all genders, races, ethnicities and sexual, cultural or ideological preferences. We are better, faster and stronger together.

Further I absolutely reject the nationalist, anti-immigrant and hateful politics of Donald Trump and will work to shield our community from this movement as best as I can. As we all try to understand what this vote means to us, I want to affirm to anyone on our team that is scared or feels personally exposed, that I and everyone else here at Grubhub will fight for your dignity and your right to make a better life for yourself and your family here in the United States.

If you do not agree with this statement then please reply to this email with your resignation because you have no place here. We do not tolerate hateful attitudes on our team.I want to repeat what Hillary said this morning, that the new administration deserves our open minds and a chance to lead, but never stop believing that the fight for what’s right is worth it.

    Stay strong,
    Matt

Next day, after becoming aware of the damage he’s done to the name of the firm we invariably get the grovel.

This year’s presidential election was undoubtedly divisive and left many of our employees feeling concerned. In response, I wrote a company-wide email that was intended to advocate for inclusion and tolerance — regardless of political affiliation — during this time of transition for our country.

Some of the statements in my email (please see full text below) have been misconstrued. I want to clarify that I did not ask for anyone to resign if they voted for Trump. I would never make such a demand. To the contrary, the message of the email is that we do not tolerate discriminatory activity or hateful commentary in the workplace, and that we will stand up for our employees.

Grubhub welcomes and accepts employees with all political beliefs, no matter who they voted for in this or any election. We do not discriminate on the basis of someone’s principles, or political or other beliefs.

I deeply respect the right of all citizens to vote for the candidate of their choice. In fact, I offered extra flexibility on Tuesday and encouraged all our employees to go vote. There is a place for all points of view at Grubhub. We value diverse perspectives and believe those perspectives help to create a better product and a better workplace culture.

Grubhub’s leadership team has worked for years to create a culture of support and inclusiveness. I firmly believe that we must bring together different perspectives to continue innovating. We are better, faster and stronger together, and so is America.

Today seems like a good day to repost this. At the end I’ll let you in on a little open secret.

    Enough

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the consequence of a plan held dear.
    Through the days of October, in Twenty-Sixteen;
Hardly a man remains to be seen
Who remembers those famous days that year.

One man gave voice to corruptions’ removal
    With steadfast admonishment despite their refusal;
Held the Q-beam aloft and lighted their ruse
A billionaire walked in the average mans shoes.
Elitists decried the demands to step down
    As the rallies continued in village and town;
Admonished and more they were labeled deplorable
Yet the strong brilliant faces were simply adorable.

“How dare you to challenge”, snooty voices decried
    Staying strong in the falsehood, retaining their lie;
Looming faces returned were both stoic and bold
“Is that all you have” the firm patriots told.

Here’s a little insider something for those who have been with us all along; and perhaps for those who are just now realizing what has taken place.

The reality is: Donald Trump was our Tea Party candidate.
Go back and look at the platform, it’s identical to the platform of the original Tea Party (small government, fiscal conservatism, Main Street not Wall Street, and strong immigration controls/enforcement).

Donald Trump is now our President Elect.

For those who haven’t followed politics closely, you might not remember who the real nemesis has been behind the scenes for the past seven years. His name is Tom Donohue, the President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Back in 2010 Donohue made it his personal mission to destroy the Tea Party because we represented an existential threat to his Wall Street scheme. Donohue usurped the American electorate …

The Yuan has strengthened against the US in the past decade and the dollar has strengthened on a trade weighted index basis over the same period. In fact, you moron, the Yuan has been stronger than the US dollar over this same period. Have you go that? The implication in that first stupid comment of was that the Yuan has been weak against the US dollar. It hasn’t!

Perhaps you could enlighten us? I’m happy to be educated.

I’ve tried, but it doesn’t seem to sink in.

No, because that exactly what you are trying to do. Your first comment was stupid. You then tried to cover it up by suggesting a fixed exchange is by nature manipulation and that’s what you were trying to get at. That’s just a cowardly lie.

You can manipulate a float of a fixed exchange rate.

After all I’ve said nothing about you slithering back to the Trump Train.

  104. Bruce of Newcastle says:

Then why does Trump want to describe China as a currency manipulator?

    Because they are?

China has three aims. One: to employ the serfs. Two: to screw the enemy. Three: to maintain competitiveness (which is intended to fulfil #1 and #2).

Devaluing the currency achieves all three, which is why they use a ‘managed basket’ approach. That gives them a figleaf to cover their devaluations.

Goldman Spots Odd “Asymmetry” In Chinese Yuan Fixing As Outflows Accelerate (last Sunday)

We have spent recent weeks modeling the fixing mechanism for $/CNY. In the process, we uncovered meaningful asymmetry, meaning that the RMB does not reverse declines made on Dollar strength when the Dollar weakens. This episode of Dollar weakness is a case in point, with the CFETS basket resuming its fall after a period of stability (Exhibit 4). Even beyond the trade-weighted decline in the RMB, we have argued that a rising USD makes things difficult for China, because it means that $/CNY has to fix higher (Exhibit 5), which carries the risk of accelerating capital flight. Hedging costs for RMB downside have pulled back, offering a compelling entry point should Dollar strength resume on a Clinton win.

Translated to human speak the Chinese allow their currency to follow the USD down, but when it rises they don’t follow. That is aided by da proles getting their money out, which tends to lower the yuan and raise Sydney house prices. 😀

Bruce, China has devalued the currency. Over the past decade it’s appreciated both against the US and other major currencies in a material way because it fixed to the US Dollar.

Goldman is talking nonsense. There may be days when the Yuan doesn’t totally track the US Dollar because they also have to consider the trade weighted basket.

Here’s the point though, if China floated today, the Yuan would weaken substantially and therefore ,all things being equal, China is not manipulating the currency.

  133. Tel says:

Then why does Trump want to describe China as a currency manipulator?
Come on JC, this is your field of expertise.

Because blue collar manufacturing plant workers who lost their jobs need to feel someone was behind it all!

For a while China and Japan were buying buckets of US Treasuries, but that’s really stabilized out now and they have just been keeping that pretty steady, slowly selling off. There’s some charts here showing growing foreign ownership of US debt.

    http://static.businessinsider.com/image/4f6892586bb3f72537000036-1200/image.jpg

That said, the elephant in the room is the Fed and their QE programs. If buying Treasuries represents manipulation then the Fed would be the manipulation boss… they own more than China now!

  134. JC says:

Tel, not you too with the manipulation bullshit. Come on.

If there were no treasuries .. US government debt didn’t exist- foreigners would have to buy stocks or bonds.

The US runs a current account deficit, someone somewhere has to finance it.

Stop it with that word, as it was only meant to be abused by no thing imbeciles such as Nurse Rumpole, who has no fucking idea what he’s talking about.

  135. Tel says:

Well the US debt is absolutely massive, so it’s going to have an effect somewhere… and the QE program plus foreign governments are what allowed that debt to keep growing.

Mind you, Australian government debt isn’t a whole lot better, and I would guess the Chinese own a chunk of that too, but at least we haven’t got a bunch of QE style assets sitting on the books at the RBA.

You just can’t tell me these are anything close to a free market. Government budgets should be forced to balance at least after a few years, and QE should be illegal. Then we could see what currencies are really doing. I’m sure I’ve seen you comment at times you believed the currencies were “managed”.

  136. Tel says:

The US runs a current account deficit, someone somewhere has to finance it.

That’s ridiculous, no one HAS to finance anything, the whole idea of trade is voluntary exchange.

If a currency is allowed to float then prices will adjust and inflows and outflows sort themselves out. Individual foreigners who want to buy US stocks (presuming that’s allowed) will also have a small effect on a currency (that’s the natural effect which should be happening), but institutional government programs buying trillions of dollars worth is obviously going to have a much larger effect.

  137. JC says:

    Tel

    Riddle me this

If QE functionally operates as a bond buying program used as a strategy to attain a predetermined inflation target how on fucking earth does QE increase the pool of outstanding government debt?

  138. Armadillo says:

I disagree with Jonathan Pie on a lot of things, but now he finally gets it.

Wow. He nailed some of it. Not much mention of the media and the “echo chamber”, but at least he alluded to it.

  139. JC says:

    Umm tel

The world’s balance of payments is net zero. If there are two countries in the world. One runs a current
account deficit the other country must be running a current account surplus.

  140. 2dogs says:

Can someone please show that Jonathan Pie video to Gillian Triggs?

  141. Oh come on says:

The Chinese don’t own that much US debt. Well under a trillion dollars now, IIRC. I believe Japan has overtaken China as the largest holder of US treasuries. Almost a trillion dollars owed to the Chinese sounds a lot but we’re talking about a near-20 trillion dollar economy here.

The Chinese government has a debt load of something like 250% of GDP and rising fast….AND they primarily owe that money to their own people! Sure, the Chinese population are great savers, but the Chinese government isn’t and it’s raided their banks to fuel their borrowing. If the US government ever defaulted, it’d largely be to foreigners and the Federal Reserve. Which certainly wouldn’t be fun for anyone. But if the Chinese government defaults (and it’s racking up debt at such a rate that I don’t see how it can’t at some point), there will be a damn revolution as hundreds of millions of people realise their retirement savings have been stolen by their government.

Anyway, this is tangential to your conversation. As you were.

  142. Senile Old Guy says:

Can’t help thinking that our ABC (and every other media outlet and political commentator on the planet) would have seen the Trump train coming if only they had opened their ears. Particularly pertinent was the comment that “the left won the culture war”.

    #theystilldontgetit

No, in Australia, the LNP still do not get it. Turnbull, Bishop, Shorten and others have demonstrated this clearly. Which is just a little odd, since the last election clearly demonstrated the importance of the ‘textor’ ‘qualitatively don’t matter’ and the HRC ‘deplorables’. Shorten will win the next election but not for the reasons he thinks. And if the LNP finds a leader who has clue (currently unlikely) he would lose the next.

The left have not won the culture war; the conservatives surrendered. We need new ‘conservatives’. Not right wing: Trump is not right wing. We need ‘conservatives’ who will conserve what is worth conserving and not submit to every left wing SJW meme.

  143. Oh come on says:

Current account deficits are a bogeyman. They can only exist if you have something other countries wish to invest in. If you don’t, your imports will become relatively less affordable and your current account will stabilise at a sustainable level.

  144. Tel says:

If QE functionally operates as a bond buying program used as a strategy to attain a predetermined inflation target how on fucking earth does QE increase the pool of outstanding government debt?

Because if the Fed wasn’t buying Treasuries then hardly anyone else would do either and the interest rate would go up (i.e. the “bond vigilante” scenario) then governments would say, “Holy crap! Look at all the interest payments, we gotta do something about all this debt.”

As it is now, you have people recommending governments get into MORE debt because hey, interest rates are low, what harm can it do? Like this guy:

In what amounted to a plea to the Prime Minister and Treasurer to take advantage of near-record low interest rates and borrow now that the Reserve Bank’s cash rate was close to zero at 1.5 per cent, he told a parliamentary hearing that monetary policy is “not working as effectively as it might have”.

    http://www.smh.com.au/business/the-economy/reserve-bank-governor-philip-lowe-urges-government-to-invest-in-infrastructure-20160922-grm9n5.html

So the central bank decrees that interest rates will be low, and then governments go, “How convenient for our spending programs, these low interest rates just came along because the market decided we should spend more.” They are all in the same little cozy central planner’s club together.

  145. Tel says:

But if the Chinese government defaults (and it’s racking up debt at such a rate that I don’t see how it can’t at some point), there will be a damn revolution as hundreds of millions of people realise their retirement savings have been stolen by their government.

I agree, that’s a problem. Not sure if it relates to currency prices though… if it went bang then yeah very ugly.

But wait, you do understand that the US Social Security is heading for insolvency and ALSO is going to fail to pay out ?

As for Australia, we still have our Super, until that too is stolen, probably by tax. The problem of stolen retirement savings is coming for all of us.

Remember how Putin has deliberately taken on the role of champion of the Orthodox church in Russia ?
At Christmas time Trump should set up a joint broadcast with Putin wishing the world a happy Christmas and emphasising the good that Christians do throughout the world.

    He’s way ahead of ya 😉 🙂 –

Trump: ‘We’re gonna be saying Merry Christmas’

At a campaign event on Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told the crowd that he would publicly embrace Christmas as president.

…CATHOLIC MOM TRUMP SUPPORTER: ‘MY VOICE DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE SHAMED’

Suzy Clark Carlisle is a Gainesville, Florida-based writer, dedicated wife and mother, and proud Catholic. In a post on her blog, she shares her reflections on why she, like millions of other women, voted for President-elect Donald Trump.

    From her blog:

I am white. I am a woman. I am a college graduate. I am upper middle class. I am a Christian. I am a conservative. But here’s what I am NOT: I am not a racist. I am not a homophobe. I am not a xenophobe. I am not a sexist. You know what else I am not? STUPID. Being a conservative white lady doesn’t make me a moron just because that’s not what the cool kids are into. Politically conservative does not equal hate. I am highly insulted that the media is “blaming” me for getting Trump elected. I am also highly insulted that the media, and even some of my more liberal leaning peers and relatives, are insinuating that I am a racist homophobe because I voted for Trump.

So, in closing, he won people. He won fair and square whether you like it or not. If you are an American citizen, he IS your president. No amount of hashags or tweets can change the constitution so you’re wasting your thumb strength. Redirect your energy to being the change you want to see in this country. I am a patriot. I love my country. I value the gift of freedom and the chance to have my voice heard. But my voice does not deserve to be shamed. That, my friends, is just plain un-American.

  148. Oh come on says:

But wait, you do understand that the US Social Security is heading for insolvency and ALSO is going to fail to pay out ?

As for Australia, we still have our Super, until that too is stolen, probably by tax. The problem of stolen retirement savings is coming for all of us.

But it’s going to hit some countries harder than others. Practically all forms of social security are on unsustainable trajectories. The question is whether the massive projected future liabilities are actually incurred. I don’t think they will be – no one will lend us that much money. Of course, it’s going to make old age suck for a generation. But in the developed world we’ll be a lot better off than, say, the Chinese.

Additionally, in the US and in Australia, we can flush the toilet and punish policymakers. The Chinese do not have this option.

What bemuses me is why the liberal left thought that conservatism would just go quietly into the night? New age positive thinking , and I use the word thinking purely as a literary device, has just dropped them squalling and cold into reality. Oh, time for a Friday joke.

” So the dicks fall off the stupid ones”
Just in case there are concerned lefty trolls visiting, that should top you out over 220 diastolic.

  151. sdfc says:

The US runs a current account deficit, someone somewhere has to finance it.

That’s ridiculous, no one HAS to finance anything, the whole idea of trade is voluntary exchange.

No actually it’s not, there can be no current account deficit without a capital and financial account surplus.

Assuming you don’t have a never ending supply of foreign exchange reserves.
