Fully concur that most mining towns are dumps that no family would see as a long term residence.
Facilities are generally sub-standard and expensive, medical and educational are third world standard and housing run down or decrepit.
Then top it off with unemployed and feral locals who spend their time drinking, doing drugs and terrorising or mugging people and burgling residents’ houses.
By contrast, the majority of FIFO accommodation camps, while basic, are clean comfortable and well run, most have good meals and recreational facilities supplied.
FIFO wages are good, expenses are few, but the lifestyle can be lonely and hard, and is better suited to young singles than family men, especially in the longer term.
I am not surprised that most FIFO workers never set foot outside of their camp off shift and rarely interact with the locals.
I also suspect DG is operating from rented premises. Or he’s a squatter.

Just got back from a late arvo game drive on the Maasai Mara (two a’s if it is the place, one a when it is the Masai people). Mara means ‘a spotted place’ and that is what the thousands of Wildebeast pouring in to the amazingly lush yellow on top and green underneath grasslands look like, spotting the landscape. Great bunches and trails of these animals everywhere slowly advance over these wide lands and skies with sunlight glowing the grass a Van Gogh yellow against the darkening advance of tonight’s rainstorm. The rain at this time is unusual and explains why the migration this year is late. A few days earlier and we might have missed it. East Africa has had good rains everywhere this year and the animals have not been driven by hunger till now as the Serengeti has been more lush than is usual at this time. This arvo we noted the many Zebra who also migrate as do many others who all join in the great migration to the Mara and Ngorongoro Crater (more than a hundred miles wide not thousands as I misrecorded earlier).
We also saw a lioness on a rock, and stopping to watch her saw one cub (half-grown up) point up his little ears in the grass and then another and then a third. Oh’s and ah’s all round as from a steep dip leading to a small waterhole surrounded by bushes emerged a fourth cub and then growing amazement from watching safari vehicles and a slow whispered count from four to seven, as seven cubs lined up next to mum, geared up ready to learn from the easy pickings of young Wildebeast and Zebra, as we noted too that the few Mara trees, spindly but with no vegetation below giraffe height, and with flat tops, were absolutely bulging with big grey blobs: vultures waiting. It’s on, said this universe of expectation.

Husar case is whiffy and voters expect it to be dealt with

Like the image of Bronwyn Bishop emerging from a sleek and expensive helicopter at taxpayers’ expense, one similarly grating image will dog Labor MP Emma Husar until she leaves parliament: the photo of one of her employees leaning over to pick up the excrement of Husar’s dog reeks of a publicly funded boss who has lost sight of what’s acceptable in the real world.
Bishop was in parliament for almost 30 years, so maybe that’s her excuse for failing the pub test. It’s no excuse, of course, but it happens. Husar is a rookie Labor MP who won the marginal NSW seat of Lindsay at the 2016 election. What explains her snout seemingly being so deep in the trough of entitlement that she thought it appropriate to expect her staff to pick up her dog’s excrement?
It’s bad enough that MPs misuse taxpayer-funded entitlements. Husar is being investigated for misusing employees. So far, the claims against Husar are unproven and the ALP has appointed Jack Whelan to investigate the allegations internally. While Whelan’s report may be referred to the state party’s administrative committee, all eyes are on how Bill Shorten will deal with this.
In the lead-up to the Super Saturday by-elections, the Opposition Leader did everything to deflect Husar’s troubles so she wouldn’t interfere with saving Labor MPs in Longman, Braddon, Perth and Fremantle. In a case of out of sight, out of mind, Husar went on leave. But with Shorten’s win behind him, will he now try to save Husar, too?
That will surely depend on whether serious claims against her are found to be proven. In an office that has seen staff turnover of more than 20 in just two years, one former staff member claims “everyone had a turn in being her slave”. There are claims Husar called staff members “f..kwits” and “c…s”. One ex-staff member said people in her office were afraid to go to work. Husar reportedly instructed one male staff member to do the dishes so he could learn about “white male privilege”. It is also claimed that staff members were expected to babysit her children, perform other household chores and pick up after her dog. Another staff member described Husar as “rude and aggressive and intimidating and just cruel”. A Labor volunteer claims that as a direct result of “constant verbal abuse” by Husar, he spent a month in a psychiatric hospital.
Husar says many of the claims are “lies”. But if serious allegations of bullying are proven, she should be sacked because the voters of Lindsay deserve better than her. At the workers’ party in particular, misusing and abusing your staff ought to be a heinous crime that attracts heinous penalties.
So far, Labor’s defence of Husar has been riddled with nonsense and hypocrisy. Labor MP Mike Kelly said he has no problem with a single mother of three using staff with taxpayer-funded salaries to help her juggle life as a federal politician. “It’s a small price to pay for having a truly representative democracy and facilitating the ability of women to participate in our parliament,” Kelly told Sky News last week.
It is an insult to single mothers doing it tough to suggest they would do what Husar, who earns about $200,000, is claimed to have done to her staff. Single mum or not, employers should not expect staff to clean up after the boss’s dog, or bully their staff.
Kelly’s defence of Husar is also an insult to representative democracy. If allegations against the Lindsay MP are proven, and we follow Kelly’s argument about representative democracy to its logical conclusion, does that mean we must fill parliament with a representative sample of bullies and crooks?
The Opposition Leader’s defence of Husar was equally dopey. True to form, Slippery Bill stretched credulity by claiming he knew nothing about this political train wreck until 10 days ago. And then Shorten asked voters to remember that this involves a “therapy” dog for her son, as if the mention of therapy makes Husar the bigger victim.
And on the weekend Husar took victimhood to another level. She told The Daily Telegraph that we needed more women in parliament and that she was “deeply concerned that the pile-on we’ve seen over the last week will scare off some young women from political careers”. Husar is right that we need more women in parliament. But her attempt to be the victim of a “pile-on” and then to turn this into an issue for other women is low-rent politics. If Husar wants to make this about gender, let’s turn it around. If a male MP were accused of bullying his staff and treating them like slaves, he would be cut adrift. A therapy dog would not save him. Gender aside, an employer has been accused of bullying staff and it deserves scrutiny. End of story.
If Husar’s predicament scares off some people from political careers, then it’s a safe bet those people — men or women — shouldn’t be in parliament.
Unfortunately, the Husar mess may have further to go yet. Questions are being raised quietly about whether her alleged abuse of staff started only when she became an MP or whether it occurred in her previous jobs. Her ex-husband, whom she has accused of domestic violence, doesn’t want to discuss family issues. “My priority is protecting my children and their mental wellbeing but I’m sure the truth will one day come out,” he said.
The prospect of more sordid details makes one wish this was just another routine story of an MP misusing taxpayer-funded entitlements. Husar has been accused of that, too: there are claims she used parliamentary entitlements to buy household groceries and charged taxpayers more than $2000 for limousine travel outside of the Comcar rules.
At least we’re used to this kind of vanilla — and very bipartisan — abuse of entitlements, if proven. It earns an eye-roll until news of the next rort, like reports this week that the Victorian Labor government has asked Victoria Police to investigate whether the Victorian Liberal Party misused taxpayer-funded entitlements by using government staff as campaigners in the lead-up to the 2014 election. That comes just days after we learned that Victoria Police’s fraud squad is investigating whether Victorian Labor MPs or staff misused parliamentary allowances heading into the same election.
Or news last month of another newbie MP, senator Lucy Gichuhi, who repaid taxpayers because she billed us thousands of dollars to fly a few members of her family for her “50th birthday plus GST” party last October. Would an ordinary worker think it appropriate to bill their employer to fly some family members to their birthday? Would it cross your mind? Cue another eye-roll. Maybe some in the class of 2016 missed the induction program about keeping snouts out of troughs.
Husar’s dilemma is altogether different. If claims of her abusing staff are proven, her political career should be over.
Even the most diverse and inclusive kind of representative democracy should not include this.

Emma Husar skipped NDIS hearing for concert

Federal Labor MP Emma Husar went to a Bruno Mars concert in Brisbane with a close friend who is a police officer, months after other officers from the same area command in western Sydney were called to her house over an alleged incident involving a family member.
The Australian has confirmed from large deleted portions of Ms Husar’s personal Facebook page and parliamentary expenses records that she skipped the second day of an NDIS parliamentary hearing in far north Queensland in March and travelled instead to join the friend at the concert in Brisbane.
Ms Husar’s friend, Chief Inspector Tracy Stone, a police officer from the MP’s western Sydney electorate, took leave from her position in the Nepean area command, flying north for the musical rendezvous. Ms Stone called her Brisbane trip “adventure time” in a post on Facebook. Ms Husar commented: “Come at me baby.” Ms Stone replied: “On my way.”
The Australian is not suggesting Ms Stone was involved in investigating the incident at Ms Husar’s family home nor that she knew the officers.
After the March 14 Bruno Mars concert at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, the two dined at the city’s riverside Blackbird Bar & Grill, according to a deleted Facebook post.
Facing an internal party investigation into alleged staff bullying and misuse of entitlements, Ms Husar appears to have expunged all material before April this year from her personal Facebook account but left a second, official MP’s Facebook account intact.
Ms Husar had attended the first day of NDIS hearings in Cairns, before flying to Brisbane to meet Ms Stone. Ms Husar’s parliamentary colleagues remained behind in Cairns and travelled to Townsville for a second day’s NDIS committee proceedings. A spokesman for NSW Police said Ms Husar and Ms Stone had been friends since attending school together.
The Australian has learned Ms Husar’s ex-partner, Peter Fenton, has made an official complaint to the permanent internal investigative unit of the NSW Police Force about the conduct of western Sydney police officers in relation to an incident involving Ms Husar.
The Australian understands Mr Fenton has asked the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, which replaced the Police Integrity Commission in NSW, to investigate the behaviour of senior police linked to an incident at Ms Husar’s home in November. Police were called to Ms Husar’s home on November 19 following the reporting of an incident, but no action was taken.
The political future of Ms Husar, the federal Labor member for Lindsay, remains unclear while an internal inquiry is conducted for the NSW ALP head office by barrister John Whelan into allegations she bullied staff and misused her parliamentary entitlements. Ms Husar has denied these allegations.
Mr Whelan’s report, which follows interviews with up to 20 former staff who have worked for Ms Husar over the past two years and since left, is due to be handed to the NSW ALP’s administrative committee late next week. The separate referral to the LECC follows what is believed to be the unhappiness of Ms Husar’s former partner about police follow-up after the alleged incident at her home in South Penrith in November. The Australian understands the LECC referred the matter to the Nepean area local command, and one officer may have been counselled over the issue.
Ms Husar has not charged taxpayers for the cost of two nights’ travel allowance for time spent away from home around the Brisbane trip, suggesting she was perhaps not on official business.
But she did charge $570 for a Comcar before leaving Sydney, $114 for a Comcar on arrival in Brisbane, and $186 for another on arriving back in Sydney.
A spokesman for Ms Husar said last night: “Of course no work expenses were used to attend a concert. Any assertion otherwise is preposterous. Emma was in Cairns on 14 March to attend a day-long committee hearing on the National Disability Insurance Scheme. She also met with Ruth’s Women’s Shelter in Cairns on the 13th. On 15 March, she attended meetings in Brisbane with two organisations — The Micah Project and DV Connect — to discuss domestic violence policy matters, specifically the development of consistent best-practice national standards for women’s shelters.
“These meetings were relevant to Emma’s role as secretary of the opposition status of women caucus committee and noting her involvement in domestic violence policy development.”
The spokesman said the concert tickets were a birthday gift.
After the Brisbane engagements, Ms Husar boarded a flight for Sydney and attended an Ed Sheeran concert at ANZ Stadium.

Given their unquenchable interest in the RC investigating churches surely they will have three articles per day for the next year on predatory sexual behaviour by NGO employees. Surely.
I’ve redirected my not inconsiderable alcohol purchasing budget to the local independent “Little Bottler” for a number of reasons but the baggy fiasco was part of that. It might be some time before I consider coming back. I want to make sure it has sunk in that the shop exists to serve the customer, and not the other way around.

Likewise. Hard-working Chinese family run the local thirsty camel franchise. Prices are a little higher, but they give you a bag for free and the plonk, for the prices they charge, is a better quality.
At the Coles bottle shop I took $84 worth of grog to the counter, which was rung up, then I was asked if I wanted a bag to put the booze in. Upon learning there was an extra charge, I told them to put the plonk back on the shelves and I’d shop elsewhere.
Haven’t been back since.

+1000. Moranbah like most mining towns during the boom was grossly overpriced and heaving with pretention by some of the less aesthetically pleasing ladies that would rival some inner city areas. We found it cheaper to send one worker including half a days wagers to Mackay to source anything as the Cental Highlands either didn’t stock it, had a substandard cheapie at full price or had the fit for purpose item at eyewatering prices even managers with cashed up budgets would baulk at. I have noticed in the last few months prices in Mackay on the rise again as the pick up gathers pace only a matter of time before it spreads.
Not only that accommodation was at such crazy prices a worker on $150K would be forking out well over half to live in a weatherboard Queenlander style house if you could get it. As someone above mentioned services are sub standard due to the tyranny of distance, travel can be a nightmare if you are paying for it try booking a flight Moranbah-Brisbane for anything under $400 one way on a Qantaslink Dash 8. A pedant strikes! Having camped on the floor of the Ngorongoro, I think it needs further paring down. It is 2okm in diameter and the area within the collapsed caldera is 300 square kms. Thieves steal Swedish crown jowels, flee in motor boat, chase ensues

Thieves have made off with priceless Swedish crown jowels, in a daring heist reminiscent of a Hollywood movie.
According to Swedish radio the offenders took two crowns and a royal orb known as a ‘riksapple’ from the ancient cathedral in Strangnas, west of Stockholm, around lunchtime on Tuesday.
They were the funeral crowns of Karl IV and his wife Queen Kristina, who died in the early 17th century.
Thieves have made off with priceless crown jowels in a speedboat moored below the ancient Strangnas cathedral.
Two men were seen to jump into a motor boat moored just below the church.
Police quickly mobilised and pursued the thieves by sea, on land, in helicopters and planes.
“We are on land, in the water and in the air,” a police spokesman said.
But the pair somehow evaded pursuit and vanished.
The spokesman said they could have left the motorboat and jumped in a getaway car heading west into the hinterlands, or east to Stockholm.
“We are spreading out in all directions.”
Police chief spokesman Thomas Agnevik told Swedish TV the lost objects were “invaluable objects of national interest”.
By 9.30pm there had still been no arrest.
The royal regalia were originally buried with the couple but were later exhumed and put on display.
At the time of the theft the church was open and staff were on duty. A spokesman said no-one had been injured “physically or mentally”, but they had decided to keep the church closed for the rest of the day.
