Court of Two Sisters for jazz brunch.

Malcolm Turnbull to feature on Q&A special

Malcolm Turnbull will return to the Q&A set for his first media appearance since he was ousted as prime minister in August.

The former prime minister will appear on a special hosted by Q&A host Tony Jones next Thursday.

“Malcolm Turnbull has been inundated with media requests since he was removed as Australia’s 29th prime minister by his parliamentary colleagues,” an ABC spokesman said.

“Now he has decided his first major appearance will be to answer questions from the people of Australia on Q&A.”

Mr Turnbull became notorious for his appearances on the panel show, especially due to his liking for leather jackets, while he was serving under then-Liberal leader Tony Abbott.

From the Oz. Chloe Shorten might as well just start packing to move into the Lodge.

…three North Queensland crossbench MPs have decried “politically correct” attacks on a country fish and chip shop named “The Battered Wife”.

Katter’s Australian Party MP Shane Knuth said the Innisfail shop seemed popular among locals and its female owner should not be bullied into changing its name.

“She also batters fish and chips. I was passing by there two weeks ago and the place was full to the brim so there is no offence in regards to the community,” the local MP said.

“I think the big question is: are we taking political correctness so far that anything that out there now is attempted humour has to be shelved and removed completely because of some association?” he said.

Nick Dameto, also a KAP member, acknowledged the name was “not funny at all” but described it as “clever marketing”.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington today laid red roses outside parliament in remembrance of slain women.

“We’ll remember the 11 women who have been murdered in Australia in the past month,” Ms Palaszczuk told parliament ahead of the rally.

“Unfortunately, that includes Queenslander Toyah Cordingly whose death at Wangetti Beach remains unsolved. My heart goes out to the Far North community still coming to terms with her death.”

Queensland’s Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath described the name as “appalling” and out of line with community expectations.

“We’re talking about respect; we’re talking about changing culture. There’s nothing funny about a statement like that.”

Ms Frecklington also criticised the shop’s name as “absolutely inappropriate”.

The business owner, Carolyn Kerr, has previously defended the business name.

“The only trivialising part about it is that in today’s society, women are the only ones that are categorised with this degrading, belittling, shameful label of battered wife — a label that is still whispered and shunned,” she told The Cairns Post last year.

“Apart from the amazing, selfless people that work tirelessly on the front line doing whatever they can to help, society would rather not acknowledge its existence and our politicians throw little bits of money here and there that gets less and less with every new budget.”

    Careful what you ask for….

Battered Sav – could be something suspicious in the second word

Dim Sim – say no more, obviously an Asian reference

Chicko Roll – derogatory to women, who should not be called “chicks”

Scallops – I’ll think of something, or someone will

Joofish is right out (wouldn’t even let me write it correctly…)

Flake – derogatory to people who are a bit flakey

Trevalley – hurtful to people called Trevor

Barramundi – same same to people called Barry

Maybe just pictures of the products with numbers?

Bomber jackets of various sorts are very manly though. Hairy had an Italian black leather bomber jacket when I first met him. Malcolm Trumble has ruined their image now though.

Pakistan overturns Christian woman Asia Bibi’s blasphemy death sentence

Pakistan’s top court has acquitted a Christian woman who has been on death row since 2010 for insulting Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

In today’s verdict, the court ordered authorities to free Asia Bibi. Ms Bibi was being held at an undisclosed jail for security reasons. The landmark ruling is expected to anger Islamists who had threatened to launch nationwide protests if the court freed her.

Ms Bibi was arrested in 2009 after a quarrel with Muslim women. Islamists have demanded her execution. A governor and a minister of minorities were assassinated in 2011 for supporting her.

Insulting Islam is punishable by death in Pakistan, and the mere rumour of blasphemy can ignite lynchings.

    Breaking news.

“We are of course making sure that particularly children who are suffering from health issues are being removed from Nauru back to Australia to be looked after from a health perspective.

Bowers was ticked off at Trump for not being racist enough. But he sure loved Trump’s embrace of the migrant caravan story, didn’t he? It wouldn’t have been a thing if Trump hadn’t amplified it. Trump is implicated.

The evidence is Bowers is a neo nazi. Neo Nazis have little in common with either side of politics. They hate homosexuals, immigration, political correctness, free markets, multiculturalism, innocent until proven guilty and free speech. They embrace violence as a strategy and get wrapped in conspiracy theories. They are outliers that are a category all to themselves. The only reason they are labelled as alt right is because they hate the Left more than they hate the Right.

‘It’s election time here in the sleepy green sludge electorate of Northcote.’

Robber Baron, I grew up in Northcote and nothing seems to have changed, even though it was still largely blue-collar in the seventies .

In the seventies and early eighties, politics at both the State and municipal level was dominated by an extreme left Labor branch, most of them schoolteachers and most of those, err, graduates from the Maoist-run Latrobe University Education School, where you were guaranteed a pass, irrespective of your performance or lack of it. This mob professed to love the ‘working class’, flew the Eureka flag from the Town Hall and replaced the mayoral ball with a some early form of eco/Aboriginophile outdoor ritual. Sheehan was, IIRC, a Latrobe education alumnus.

In the late eighties and early nineties, the place was run by an Hellenic faction of the ALP. They changed the city colours from green and gold to blue and white and allegedly hosted Greek weddings and other community events in the Town hall at the ratepayers’ expense.

    Today, well plus ca change…

Pakistan’s top court has acquitted a Christian woman who has been on death row since 2010

The supreme court justices are going to need extremely tight security, and the court will need to be seriously bombproofed. Already two Paki politicians have been assassinated because they tentatively suggested that she should not be executed.

Riots on Friday I should think, although they may not wait that long.

  38. Like I said before I’m not defending the Queensland law. I disagree that the status of the woman is irrelevant. Remember what I said was if it wasn’t the basis of the law, it was how the law was argued for – the status of women. This is what I fear, having judgments about classes of people as a means to justify laws. It isn’t the new QLD law or even Zoe’s law I’m worried about. It is the trend in terms of legislative drafting, jurisprudence and political discourse. You’re arguing about being right and wrong. I am not; I am worried about a principle we know is right (rule of law) being eroded as I believe a trend is getting stronger.

Ok, but Zoe’s law counters that trend by recognizing and acknowledging the child in utero deserves the protection of the law.

Ipso facto that is a complication. Are you sure you want to literally apply these principles? This feels like a classic battle between the common law and equity. If a woman is run over and it is her fault (very difficult to prove legally as the presumption is that the driver is nearly always at fault) would you seriously prefer that she be charged with manslaughter if she survives and the child doesn’t? I don’t think we should make incompetence a crime. We’d be locking up a lot of doctors. Name your profession. More so, the assumptions in the law try to be rule-based, and authoritarianly-utilitarian. Even if the mother was morally and commonly understood to be at fault, in most cases, the father would still bear the legal liability.

I don’t see the complication. What you need to do is show what complication is introduced by Zoe’s law that isn’t already involved with a 5-month-old tot in the same fact situation.

My difficulty is in that you wish for each additional life taken to be a separate offence, even in cases of negligence up to the point of reckless indifference. If there was no legislative guidance, a judge ought to rule that each act is an offence up to that point, not each life taken as a separate offence, consistent with the principles of common law on applying harsher sentences where there is no mens rea (take Texan common law [persuasive law for Australia] on the death penalty for vehicular manslaughter – it was deemed invalid). I’m still undecided if there should be a separate crime for a mother and an unborn child in cases of (sometimes criminal) negligence. It seems too harsh and unfair on the tortfeasor.

Hang on, if someone kills 2 people in the same act, say driving in a reckless manner, doesn’t that person face a single charge or multiple charges? All I am saying is that whether that second person is a child in utero should make no difference.

  39. Do you think Mal is angling for the job of Q&A host?

  40. Shy Ted

And incredible life, but it’s a given it will be short.

In 1923, the mountaineer George Mallory gave an interview to The New York Times in which he famously explained why he was determined to summit Mount Everest. “Because it’s there.” He died in the attempt the following year. Alex Honnold, who last year became the first person to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan alone and without a rope, seems to have a different explanation for why he climbs. “Because I’m here.”

Honnold, who is 33, doesn’t quite put it in those words, at least not in “Free Solo,” the documentary film about his historic ascent of nearly 3,000 feet of vertical granite. But it’s what transforms the movie from one that’s about a remarkable feat of daring and athleticism into something altogether deeper.

On Tuesday I went to see “Free Solo” for a second time, after I couldn’t get it out of my head. I still can’t. The film is a drug. It causes your pupils to dilate, your palms to sweat, and your mind to boggle. Even as you know that Honnold is going to make it to the top, you can’t believe what you’re seeing — a young man, millimeters from extinction, transforming the unthinkable into the sublime. “Free Solo” is 97 minutes long and if you could hold your breath the whole time you probably would.

But the thrills of the movie turn out to be incidental to its real purpose, which is less about climbing than it is about living. Honnold, it turns out, isn’t simply the most accomplished rock climber of our time. He also has a first-rate mind, capable of thinking through both the minute choreography of his moves across the wall as well as the basic questions of his time on earth.

Questions like: Should long life be a goal of life? What about happiness? If not happiness, what about excellence? If excellence, what (if anything) should we sacrifice in its pursuit? Love? And when does the pursuit of excellence become mere recklessness?

Honnold has plainly given the questions serious thought — appropriately, since by his own count he’s climbed rope-free more than 1,000 times and free soloists have notoriously short lifespans. “Anybody could conceivably die on any given day,” he says philosophically. “Soloing just makes it feel much more immediate and present.”

Nazism is an extreme version of cultural conservatism. Is conservatism itself now leftist, in your view? You can argue that conservatism and libertarianism have differences so large that they are nearly incompatible – and that is why there is so much friction between the two in right wing political parties – but they coexist within the same coalition for the most part in Western democracies.

    Why alarmism is winning:

Mike Cannon-Brookes takes on PM with renewable energy initiative

David Swan The Australian October 31, 2018

Atlassian boss Mike Cannon-Brookes is launching his own renewable energy initiative, ‘Fair Dinkum Power’, in response to what he called a “bulls..t” video from Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The technology mogul, who topped Australia’s young rich list and is worth an estimated $7.1 billion, took to Twitter on Wednesday to lambast the PM and flag plans for what he described as a movement for renewable believers.

It’s unclear what exactly Mr Cannon-Brookes is plotting but sources told The Australian that the plans would be come clearer later on Wednesday.

The ‘Fair Dinkum Power’ reference is a cheeky nod to the Prime Minister’s YouTube pitch to voters promising “fair dinkum” power “that works when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow”.

Mr Cannon-Brookes has form in the renewables sector, famously losing a bet to Tesla chief Elon Musk. Mr Musk promised Mr Cannon-Brookes in March that Tesla would install a 100 megawatt hour energy storage plant in South Australia within 100 days of a contract being signed or it would be free.

Tesla built the plant, and Mr Cannon-Brookes later said he’d ‘never been happier to lose a bet.’

The pair struck the deal on Twitter in mid-2017 after a series of blackouts affected South Australia, sparking a debate about energy supply in the state.

Mr Cannon-Brookes has been busy on Twitter lately promoting the potential political campaign of left-wing activist Jane Caro, who is threatening to run in Warringah in a bid to unseat Tony Abbott.

Cannon fucking brookes is worth $4.9 billion. And like every other every rich prick supports it.

Lawyer Ali Abbas charged over plot linked to murder of teenager Brayden Dillon
Emma Partridge and Ava Benny-Morrison, The Daily Telegraph

    Subscriber only

SYDNEY criminal lawyer Ali Abbas has been charged with accessory after the fact to the murder of 15-year-old Brayden Dillon.

Abbas, who has acted for killer cop Glen McNamara and slain bikie boss Mick Hawi, has also been charged with knowingly participate in a criminal group and doing an act with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Police will allege Abbas co-ordinated and facilitated of the provision of false affidavits to distance key suspects from the fatal shooting and passed information relating to the murder between various people.

He has also been charged with taking a mobile phone into a jail to be used by an inmate.

The 38-year-old was arrested this morning at Surry Hills police station and was refused bail.

He is expected to face Sydney’s Central Local Court later today.

Yesterday homicide detectives raided Abbas’ office and home as part of the investigation into an alleged cover-up of teenager Dillon’s murder.

Hours before detectives turned up at the CBD chambers of the prominent solicitor, police arrived at his Monterey home with a search warrant.

But police allege Abbas drove away from his home as they arrived and he was not at his chambers when officers turned up later in the day.

Police raided his office and later forced their way into his home where they allegedly seized electronic stun devices, more than $30,000 cash, mobile phones, laptops and computers.

Homicide Squad detectives spent a few hours searching through documents in the lawyer’s level-four chambers before seizing several boxes.

The raids mark the latest development in the investigation which has already led to the arrests of six people over the 15-year-old’s death.

Brayden Dillon was asleep in his bedroom at his mother’s home in Glenfield, in Sydney’s southwest, in April last year when a gunman burst through the front door.

The gunman shooed Brayden’s mother away with his gun before creeping into her son’s room and shooting him at point blank range.

Conrad Craig has been charged with murder. Police allege Craig, who was charged with murder last year, was hired to carry out the hit.

Police allege the teen’s murder was ordered as revenge for his older brother, Joshua Dillon, allegedly stabbing another young man in 2016. Dillon has pleaded not guilty to murder.

That young man’s uncle, Abdul Abu-Mahmoud, is accused of organising and financing Brayden’s murder before leaving the country.

His brother, Mohamed Abu-Mahmoud, was arrested last week with police alleging he directed a plan to falsify affidavits that would distance his family from the gunman.

Another figure in the investigation is notorious Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy, who is suspected of helping mastermind the murder cover-up for his friend, Abdul Abu-Mahmoud. He has not been charged with any offence over the killing.

Information was passed between the suspects through conduits, police allege, including lawyers.

According to a statement of facts tendered in court, one lawyer was paid to make copies of a brief of evidence in the case.

That evidence was then allegedly handed over to Mohamed Abu-Mahmoud, a successful property developer, so he could assess the allegations against his brother, who was overseas at the time.

The facts allege Mohamed used “several legal professionals over the past year to assist” in absolving his family from the crimes and those professionals were under investigation.

MI5 to take over in fight against rise of UK rightwing extremism
Security service to handle intelligence gathering then inform police to take action

MI5 is to take the lead in combating extreme rightwing terrorism amid mounting fears that white supremacists are increasing their efforts to foment violent racial conflict on Britain’s streets, The Guardian has learned.

The switch from the police – which has always previously taken responsibility for monitoring far right extremism – to MI5 means that the ideology will now sit in the same portfolio as Islamist terrorism and Northern Ireland-related terrorism, which are both covered by the domestic security service.

The decision also means that extreme rightwing activity will now be officially designated as posing a major threat to national security.

Four extreme rightwing alleged plots have been thwarted in the UK since March 2017, compared with 13 Islamist plots. But with around 100 investigations into the extreme rightwing currently live, the threat is assessed as growing.

Calmer Cafe in Aberfeldie has been inundated with hundreds of negative comments after students were asked to analyse a bad review of “Calmer Coffee” in today’s VCE exam, which labelled the fictional shop a “soulless” franchise with coffee that “smells burnt”.

Manager Elise Jenkins said she was desperately trying to reach the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to find out what could be done.

“People are writing on our Facebook page and putting bad ratings,” she said.

“I’m just worried about what this is going to do to our business.

“People are writing that we have disgusting food — we’re just a small business.

“I don’t know what to do.”

Thousands obtained EU citizenship for €5000 in Bulgarian scam

Bulgarian prosecutors said on Monday (29 October) they have broken up a scam run by state officials which had enabled thousands of foreigners to obtain Bulgarian passports for cash — and with them visa-free travel across the EU.

The scheme allegedly involved employees of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, who are suspected of accepting bribes to issue fake certificates of Bulgarian origin, a document based on which Bulgarian nationality and identity documents can be issued.

Like a relay race: Baby carried by two mothers in IVF first

    By The Times

A baby born to two women in Texas is believed to be the first carried in both parents’ bodies during pregnancy.

One of Stetson Coulter’s mothers carried him for nearly the whole term after a fertilisation process in which his other mother incubated him for five days. The healthy boy was born weighing 8lb 3oz and is now five months old.

It was “almost like passing the baton, like it’s a relay race,” said Kathy Doody, a fertility specialist who runs a clinic in Bedford, Texas, with her husband. They developed the procedure and tried it on Ashleigh Coulter, 28, and her wife, Bliss, 36, who wanted to find a way to experience joint motherhood and said that Dr Doody’s method “made it really special for both of us”.

Why Wind Power Isn’t the Answer. As a new study confirms, turbines would have to be stacked across state-sized swaths of the American landscape.

two Harvard researchers published a paper showing that trying to fuel our energy-intensive society solely with renewables would require cartoonish amounts of land. How cartoonish? Consider: meeting America’s current demand for electricity alone—not including gasoline or jet fuel, or the natural gas required for things like space heating and fertilizer production—would require covering a territory twice the size of California with wind turbines.

    Those rabbis are nasty:

First – why didn’t they invite a real jew rabbi?

“I don’t begrudge anyone their own personal set of beliefs, but the idea that you would choose a rabbi who is not considered a Jew to deliver this kind of prayer reinforces concerns in the Jewish community that specifically Jewish concerns are not being put front and center,” he said.

Second – we find out even if invited they would ignore it!!

“She didn’t reach out to any of us. That being said, none of us would have done it. Rabbis who are members of the Michigan Board of Rabbis are not participating in political campaigns.”

Third – just because 1 person doesn’t believe you are truly jewish doesn’t make it so.

“Epstein belongs to Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, which is a Reform Jewish synagogue.”
As for Jacobs, he was not taking any questions about his brief appearance onstage at a rally in suburban Detroit that set social media aflame.

“At this time, he isn’t taking any interviews or answering any questions,” said Jennifer Goldstein of Congregation Shema Yisrael in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a Messianic house of worship. “Our beliefs can be found on our web site.”

And it’s their belief in Jesus as a divine savior that makes “Jews for Jesus” like Jacobs pariahs in the Jewish world, experts said.
