Bog iron was the poorer quality iron used a lot by the Britons.

Lizzie, I don’t believe that this is correct, my understanding is that bog iron is very pure and can start to be forged immediately, which begins to incorporate carbon which begins to make steel.

Ma was put under investigation for corruption in 2015 and expelled from the Communist Party the following year.

I seem to remember that bog ore was low in phosphorus which is a difficult impurity to remove, and some silica helps control rusting for wrought iron. I think I was taught that in high school.

The Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof, BGH), Germany’s highest court of civil and criminal jurisdiction, has ruled that a new law that bans child marriage may be unconstitutional because all marriages, including Sharia-based child marriages, are protected by Germany’s Basic Law (Grundgesetz).

The ruling, which effectively opens the door to legalizing Sharia-based child marriages in Germany, is one of a growing number of instances in which German courts are — wittingly or unwittingly — promoting the establishment of a parallel Islamic legal system in the country.

The krauts are the first European nation to ratify child marriages judicially.

We’ve just watched Dugal from Father Ted, really Ardal O’Hanlon, now twenty odd years older but still as delightful albeit IRL fully compos mentis, taking us on a tour of Auld Ireland. It was wonderful. We both love Ireland dearly, and Ardal showed it in all of its quirky nature, such as the Irish capacity keep options open, to dissemble and circumlocute, to disbelieve while believing, e.g. I don’t believe in ghosts but I wouldn’t say they don’t exist. People after my own heart, my Celtic Welsh side is drawn to them. The delightful Matchmaker Man in this episode was a treat for the ears as well as the heart. My own Hairy has that Celtic side too; when he had a moustache it was reddish in colour, and his genes show up Irish as well as Southern English. In his youth he left his young heart with a fey Irish girl forever (till he said goodbye to her ghost one night in the shadow of Galway’s Spanish Arch not so long ago). Many Irish came up the Atlantic coast on log boats originally, dark haired mesomorphs; except that reddishness is a north-west European trait. Scotland is full of redheads too. What a gloriously confused mixture we all are, with a lot of the Scots and Irish also being Norse in origin (like me), and the East Anglian Britons also being originally Swedish or Danish. I have a lot of East Anglian genes via my dad (Ancestry declare they have an exact match for a first cousin there that I’ve never heard of). To say nothing of Devon’s Jutes being Danish.

Ardal’s show is found on UKTV, made by the BBC I think, and you should catch it next week if you’ve a hint of ‘Celtic’ in you. Celts, of course, are simply local populations pushed long ago into isolated pockets of territory, remnants of the great north-western European proto-Indo-European culture that once held sway from the Mediterranean to Norway.

Hairy brought the mail in this evening. Our Quadrant has also arrived with it. Good-o.

So I was talking to a Senegalese taxi driver , as you do.
He used to work in the oil service industry in UK, Norway and elsewhere til it took a dive. I’ve been in his taxi before so I know a bit of his backstory.

He was telling me about some of the export stuff he does back to Senegal from Europe.
Like he can sell cheap cars and the locals down there will fix them from wrecker’s parts.

So he snaps up on the internet, sight unseen, any car of certain makes (Japanese, German mainly) that is below 500EUR and gets it shipped to Dakar in his next container-load. Reckons he makes €6-700 a day on top of his taxi earnings.

What about all the computerised stuff in cars these days? I asked.
He said, Those guys down there can turn it into manual operation with a few tweaks.
They can fix anything, not like people here.

We used to be able to, I said.

Yeah, maybe twenty, thirty years ago, he said.

Then I told him about the shit roads down in (Republic of) Congo once you got out of Pointe Noire or Brazzaville, or even before then.

How are the roads in Senegal? I asked

    Pretty good, he said.
All built by the Chinese. And now they own us.

When I said run it out, Arky, I didnt mean kill yourself. Run early in the morning, or in the evening, but watch out for assassins in the evening.

The gals are being mean about your toes. They just look like blokes toes to me.

Do you ever get the endorphin hit with running? I read some of this book called run you fat bitch, or something like that, and she started off walking then walk/jogging then occasional run mixed in with the walk/jog/ run, then over time it just adds up. Apparently. I was flat out out running a poor cow we’d just dragged out of a bog yesterday. And it didnt help that I ran at a tangent to the car and then had to angle back again. Not very tactical of me. Ungreatful cow, she was.

Kerryn Phelps quiet on property rental returns

    exclusive

Independent MP Kerryn Phelps has listed her two medical clinics and a multi-million-dollar property portfolio on her first register of member’s interests but has not disclosed how much rent she receives from the clinics.

Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, who was forced to a by-election last year after a High Court ruling determined he was ineligible to sit in parliament under section 44 of the Constitution, yesterday raised fresh questions about the high-profile Wentworth MP.

Coalition figures have expressed constitutional concerns over Dr Phelps’s work as a GP since she won Malcolm Turnbull’s former seat of Wentworth in October.

Dr Phelps, who owns the buildings that house the clinics but does not directly run the businesses, declared her properties and income as a City of Sydney councillor on December 14.

The document shows no declaration of income from her work as a GP or how much rent she receives from tenants in her Double Bay and Surry Hills properties, which were bought for $1.6 million and $2.55m respectively. “All relevant information is listed on the register in accordance with the guidelines,” her spokesman said.

So if Dr Phelps was practicing she received the Medicare Rebate for seeing patients. Clearly she needs to be referred to the High Court as she would have received most of her income from Medicare rebates ie an income from the Government, exactly the same as Mr Dutton has received into his childcare facility. Refer Dr Phelps, and hopefully Dr Laming, Dr Gosling get High Courted as well.

If the internet info is correct, Toodyay has about fifteen hundred people, but at 45 miles from Perth is well within urban wanker range for weekend snobs to drop in.

43% of French Jews or 200,000 people, are planning to emigrate to Israel. Imagine if our immigration program attracted them to Australia. No, they won’t come to Australia where Jewish kids can’t go to a Jewish school that doesn’t have armed security and bomb screening at the school drop off and the kids can’t play inter school sports for security fears. How long til Austrlia’s Jewry starts thinking of emigrating to Israel. Perhaps another 5 years of non discriminatory migration will do the trick.

    Synonyms

artifice, cheating, craft, craftiness, crookedness, crookery, cunning, cunningness, deceit, deceitfulness, deception, deceptiveness, dishonesty, dissembling, dissimulation, double-dealing, dupery, duplicity, fakery, foxiness, fraud, guile, guilefulness, wiliness

The directors of the company that signed off on the structural integrity of the defective Opal building have previously been reprimanded by the building watchdog.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that McKenzie Group director Mark Cogo, whose company was the independent certifier for the Opal building, has been whacked with multiple fines and reprimands by the Building Professionals Board.

This included a fine of $11,000 in 2009 over a warehouse he accredited, where he authorised a “fire safety solution” that was deficient.

Vietnamese traders in St Albans are vowing to strike back against groups of African youths after two violent incidents before Christmas.

Threatening messages have been posted on social media by frustrated Vietnamese workers following two brawls in recent days.

“Soon there will be machetes and guns out. And they will wonder why there is blood,” a local said on Facebook.

Another said it was time to “set up the Asian patrol squad”.

“Guys, I usually don’t post much, but enough is enough,” a worker wrote on Facebook. “We gotta make a stand together as a whole and stick up to these situations.

“Local elites in Cameroon have partnered with the Chinese miners, according to the Center for Education, Training and Support for Development Initiatives in Cameroon, an NGO based in Yokadouma.

“They [the elites] are collecting photocopies of ID cards from villagers on the pretext of wanting to bring in companies that will provide water, electricity and jobs to the village,” said Victor Amougou, the center’s coordinator. “With 10 photocopies, this elite can obtain 40 artisanal mining authorizations equivalent to 40 hectares of land.”

Once the local Cameroonian obtains permission to mine, Amougou said, he or she signs a contract with a Chinese operator to run the mine. The Chinese, in turn, bribe mining authorities and other officials so they can begin work.

The law also states that mining operators must close their holes after completing their digs. Chinese companies usually abandon their giant pits, leaving behind dangerous areas where people and domestic animals might fall and drown. The Chinese companies also pollute rivers with their chemicals and mining runoff, said Moussa.”

A messy Brexit without a London-Brussels deal would land Germany a substantial bill, EU commissioner Günther Oettinger has warned. He reckons Britain’s parliament will opt in January for a formal divorce.

Oettinger, the EU’s budget commissioner, said Thursday that if Britain ended up not paying its dues into the 28-nations’ coffers in 2019 under a “hard” Brexit, Germany’s extra bill would amount to what he termed “in the mid-three digit range” of hundreds of millions of euros.

I am amused that the famous lefty head tilt is a real psychological phenomenon:

A tilt of the head facilitates social engagement, researchers say

A new study of facial “fixation” led by Nicolas Davidenko, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, boosts our insights considerably.

“Looking at the eyes allows you to gather much more information,” said Davidenko. “It’s a real advantage.”

Davidenko found that the tilt leads people to look more at the eyes, perhaps because it makes them more approachable and less threatening. “Across species, direct eye contact can be threatening,” he said. “When the head is tilted, we look at the upper eye more than either or both eyes when the head is upright. I think this finding could be used therapeutically.”

There you go. Totalitarian lefties do the head tilt thing to look “more approachable and less threatening”. So when you see a pic of a lefty tilting lefty, flee.

Excellent! Make it as hard a Brexit as possible then! Then we’ll see Angulars house of cards tumble under the weight of third world immigration, renewable energy and the plebs potentially getting narky about paying even more to Brussels. Brown vests rioting?

Youths have glassed a young man, bashed others and robbed beachgoers of their belongings during a horror night on a Melbourne beach last night, which coincided with police being pelted with rocks in the western suburbs.

A series of incidents throughout the night at Chelsea Beach, in Melbourne’s southeast, culminated in what witnesses said was a series of crimes committed by a group of teenagers of African appearance.
This saw unattended belongings stolen from the beach at about 9.30pm.

A man reportedly saw them and confronted them, before being assaulted. According to 3AW, the youths then fled.
Three men, aged 25, 28 and 30, were later approached, assaulted and the attackers stole a mobile phone.
A 19-year-old man reportedly had a glass bottle smashed over his head, and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Victoria Police are holding a press conference about the matter this morning.
This comes after six youths were arrested over an unrelated brawl and a separate robbery in St Albans, in the northwestern suburbs, that took place on Christmas Eve.

Those arrests followed Facebook posts urging vigilante groups be formed by members of the Vietnamese community to battle what was claimed to be increasing violence by youths of African appearance.

Reading “Breaking the Codes, the book about Australia’s KGB network”
    Found this:

The spy who came out as Klod By Desmond Ball
    The Australian 1:00AM September 24, 2011

WALTER Seddon Clayton was the spymaster who ran Australia’s network of KGB spies from 1944 to 1950.

He had migrated to Australia from New Zealand in 1930, joined the Communist Party of Australia in 1933, becoming a member of its central committee in 1943 and a member of the central control commission in 1944. The commission was responsible for the internal discipline and security of the party, including the organisation and operation of an undercover or clandestine apparatus for the maintenance of party activities under illegal conditions.

First, he strongly believed he had been “the most powerful man” in the CPA. He said he was “probably the only one who gave it direction”. He had not only been “in the centre of operations” in the party, but had been principally responsible for directing those operations.

Second, he described some key aspects of the operational functioning of the spy network. He confirmed that his Soviet contact in Sydney, to whom he passed the classified material he obtained from the members of his group, was Feodor Nosov, who served in Australia from 1943 to 1950 under the cover of a journalist for TASS, the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union. This has already been well documented. But he cast new light on the role of Doris Isabel Beeby and the process by which he collected classified material from his agents in the Department of External Affairs in Canberra: Ian Milner (code-named Bur) in 1945-46, Jim Hill (Tourist) in 1945-50, Dorothy Throssell (nee Jordan) (Podruga) in 1945-47, and Ric Throssell (Ferro) in 1945 and 1947-49.

From 1945 to early 1947, Beeby was his most important contact in Canberra. She had joined the British Communist Party in September 1939 and had become a full-time party organiser when she returned to Australia. She was sent to Canberra to help build a branch of the party in 1945, and in 1946-47 she lived at No 18 Myuna Flats in Braddon, near Canberra’s Civic Centre. During this period, Clayton’s agents in External Affairs passed their purloined material to Beeby for him to collect on regular visits to Canberra. The Myuna apartment became his principal collection point. In early 1947, Throssell took over the flat from Beeby; he was joined there by Jordan in October, when they were married, and remained there until February 1949. In 1949-50, it was replaced by Frederick Rose’s house in the suburb of Turner as his main collection place.

Third, Clayton remained convinced that “the socialist revolution will still happen”. He said that with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, communists had lost “the first round”. However, he enthusiastically awaited “the next round”, telling me about the next generation of covert communists, and referring me to the children of those who had been in his spy network. He and Peace had been, I think, childless. But he made me wonder about which particular members of his Klod group he might have had in mind. I have known several of their offspring, and cannot believe any of these would have served his agenda. In the end, Clayton’s “next round” was simply the wishful thinking of a deluded old man.

Elon Musk’s lawyers have asked a judge to dismiss a defamation lawsuit by a British diver who the Tesla chief executive had labelled a “p-do guy”, arguing the comments were “just imaginative attacks” protected by the US constitution’s first amendment.

In a filing with the US District Court in Los Angeles, the lawyers also defended their client by saying Mr Musk posted the comments on Twitter, where participants “expect to read opinions, not facts”.

The Royal Family of Australian Communism

The Aarons family were influential Australian communists over three or four generations. In presenting his family’s story Mark Aarons has two aims which are in conflict with each other. One is to criticise his family for being supporters of communist mass murderers—he admits some communists “betrayed” Australia, a strong word. The other aim is to salvage something from the wreckage by bignoting his relatives, particularly his father Laurie Aarons, for being close to the centre of great events, as though some of the glamour rubs off on them. He claims they wielded great influence (especially in the ALP), and had the biggest ASIO files (Why is this surprising, why an occasion for boasting?). It’s a tightrope act to reconcile these contradictory aims, and Mark Aarons falls off on a number of occasions.

    ..

Many important parts of this book involve “the case”. Venona transcripts of Soviet cables in the postwar years revealed that allied military and strategic secrets were being leaked in Australia to the Soviets by a spy ring whose members were given code names. The “case” consisted of identifying these spies and their controller, and stopping them. It was eventually found that a “nest of traitors”, Ian Milner, Jim Hill and probably Ric Throssell of the External Affairs Department, and Frances Bernie of Dr Evatt’s staff, were giving top secret intelligence to an Australian communist, Walter Clayton (codenamed Klod), who was passing it on to the Soviet embassy in Canberra. This has been clearly established for many decades by the Petrov Commission, by subsequent books on the topic, and by the release of the Venona transcripts. To say it didn’t happen is to live in fantasy land.
