According to reporting in the Australian, Deputy Queensland Premier Jackie Trad said that:
Workers in Queensland’s coal mining districts need to learn new skills amid a global backlash against coal-fired electricity.
More specifically, Ms Trad said:
The fact is, markets are moving away from thermal coal, communities are moving away from thermal coal, nation states are moving away from thermal coal.
What we need to do as a coal exporter is understand that, and equip our communities with the best possible chance of re-skilling, and that’s why we’re focused on other materials.
One wonders how the CFMMEU and AWU members who funded the political party and campaigns of Ms Trad and her ilk feel about being told to re-skill. Maybe they can get one of this high paying green jobs that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is talking about.
But for some analytical background, this is a chart of the 10 year price history of thermal coal priced in Australian dollars (the global price of coal is denominated in US dollars).
This is a chart of thermal coal electricity plants. The pink ones are currently under construction. The purple ones are those currently planned.
The markets are moving away from thermal coal. Can’t you see the scientific consensus.
And these are the people who want to steer industry policy, picking winners and losers.
Perhaps it is Ms Trad and her colleagues who need the re-skilling.
