Gab was the 5% the default platform donation fee?
After you donate you get a screen which says all our platform is free but you can give us a tip and they have pre filled the form with some amount which you can change to a higher amount. If I recall correctly it is in multiples of $5. To get around that you actually have to select other amount and then manually overwrite the $5 or whatever it is to 0. I can understand some designers using pre filled in forms for use as convenience but I find the gofundme design very dishonest.

Folau – heading strongly towards $550k from 7,000 contributors.

A poor effort. On Instagram he has over 360,000 followers. Less than 2% are prepared to support his request for other people’s money.

Are they still taking that 5%?

I recently donated to a couple of other causes and gfm charged me 5% so I was surprised when someone upthread said they don’t charge.

Just change the tip to “Other” and then zero it.

  4. Gab

Guys, they are a for-profit organisation, they state that clearly.

  5. Gab

Btw, I don’t have any issue with that. It’s not a free service, although in some countries and for certain causes it is a free service. They choose.

Imagine watching your beloved child beaten to death in front of you and then giving a TV interview in which you appear calm and relaxed and completely and utterly self centred.

Remains one of the creepiest things I’ve seen.

I remember that footage well, and how I felt watching it. That was before she became Rosie Batty. Since then all her ‘campaigning’ has consisted of delivering speeches someone else has written, showing up for photocalls and puff profiles, and receiving awards.

  7. Gab

At one stage, gfm decided they would not support any platform raising money for legal fees. They revised their position after that and they decide which are okay and those they won’t allow.

  8. Tintarella di Luna

GFM took a 10% tip which I didn’t realise until I got an email telling me that so I sent them an email to say that it was an inadvertence and wanted to tip a much smaller amount and they sent the entire tip back but kept the donation. I’ll keep an eye on it though

Yes and I keep thinking more and more that Folau certainly ran everything past a lawyer and/or GoFundMe before starting that campaign. Hence the very specific disclaimer.

I never read anything by that vacuous gobshite Nikki Germell so didn’t know about this but here is a magnificent response to the spiteful spitoon-content written by Ms Germell

How is this not a job for a man?er choice is hurtful.
    By GREGORY MCGRATH

Nikki Gemmell wonders why male obstetricians and gynaecologists choose their specialisation and cites examples that indicate perversion and misogyny.

For more than 40 years, I have been an obstetrician and gynaecologist.

I have a degree in medicine from the University of NSW, a diploma in obstetrics from the University of Auckland and a masters in reproductive medicine from the University of NSW.

I have always strived to treat the women and men in my care professionally and with respect. I found the column hurtful and inaccurate. However, it did cause me to reflect on my career and, in a broader sense, my life.

In large part I became an obstetrician and gynaecologist because my mother died during childbirth. My baby brother survived.

This event had the flow-on effect of forcing my father to defer his medical training. The demands of a young family meant he never became a doctor. I was drawn to my vocation out of respect for both of my parents. But my motivations were not only personal: they were social and professional.

This was a particularly exciting time for maternal health. The women’s rights movement and social progress brought improvements in the liberalisation of abortion laws while scientific advances in reproductive endocrinology presaged the development of infertility therapies and access to hormonal contraception.

Because of these changes, the maternal mortality rate has declined by a factor of 10 since my mother died in the early 1950s. The safe and open provision of this care to Australian women, while not perfect, is world leading and something I was honoured to contribute to during my career, even in my own small way.

There are few greater rewards than supporting a patient and her family through pregnancy following a previous difficult pregnancy experience.

Furthermore, I take great satisfaction from those patients who have trusted me on more than one occasion to care for them during their pregnancy and, in some cases, delivering the children of the children of my original patients.

I do take the view that by the time I was delivering the children of children I delivered, it was time for me to retire.

When I started my training, partners were not present in the labour ward during their child’s birth, let alone in the operating theatre during a caesarean birth.

This progress and advances in the treatment and prevention of cervical cancer are outcomes of which all Australians should be grateful.

It is this progress that has allowed my two daughters to give birth safely and enjoy a standard of healthcare not available two generations earlier. Obstetrics and gynaecology is a great privilege and I love my job because life is never more plentiful than at the beginning.

I would note that the two egregious cases of malpractice identified in the column occurred at regional hospitals. I would hope this causes politicians to give regional health the focus and funding it deserves. I also hope it encourages young doctors to see the importance of and embark on a career in regional medicine.

Gemmell’s column also asks if you would ever find a gay gynaecologist. I know many gay gynaecologists and they are some of the finest clinicians with which I have worked. Their sexuality is irrelevant to the quality of their work, as is their gender.

I am on the executive of the Hunter Postgraduate Medical Institute, which oversees continuing medical training. I am proud of the work I have done to mentor junior doctors, the vast majority of whom are now women. (According to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians, of which I am a life member, in 2017 83 per cent of trainee O&Gs were women). One of the great developments during my career has been the growth in the number of female doctors choosing this specialty.

Obstetrics and gynaecology doesn’t exist without collaboration between men and women, other O&Gs, doctors and midwives, patients, hospital support staff — and the list goes on.

In the end I believe it’s about how you treat your patients and the outcomes you deliver for them. That doesn’t happen without a team effort.

Next year I turn 70 and my time as a practitioner is coming to an end. I am proud of the progress of my profession during the past 40 years, though more needs to be done in the areas of stillbirth, miscarriage and endometriosis.

I have had an amazing career and a wonderful life. I have a beautiful wife, three children and their spouses and two grandchildren.

I would not have reached this place without the support and love of my stepmother, who raised my brother and me as her own, as well as my four other siblings.

While I can speak only to why I became an obstetrician and gynaecologist, my life’s experience is that if someone is lucky enough to be able to choose their profession, and this is especially true in medicine, they do so to do good, not to do harm.

Of all the things I have done in my career, the one of which I am most proud is that because of the quality of my training and the skills of my colleagues I have never lost a mother during childbirth.

And of that, I hope my own mother would be proud.

Gregory McGrath worked as an obstetrician in the NSW Hunter Valley from 1983 until 2017.

  13. Tintarella di Luna

I missed this bit under the headline How is this not a job for a man?:

My mother died in childbirth. To suggest misogyny and perversion motivated my career choice is hurtful.

  29. cohenite

Tucker is a bit twisted on Bolton. Bolton recognises the Persians for what they are and it begs the question: which is this time was not the time, despite 2 blown up ships, a blown up drone and crews being taken hostage for a couple of days to do a retaliatory strike, but when is the right time.

Tucker throws the usual shibboleths such as we got rid of saddam and it’s still a shit-hole without understanding why which is the RoP; that’s why the ME is a shit-hole: wherever the RoP is, is a shit-hole. You can’t remove one RoP and expect a success when another RoP takes its place.

So, that is the question for Tucker: when do you fight; if he says never he’s a fool; if he agrees there is a time for fighting then all he’s doing with Bolton is disagreeing about the timing; which is a crucial point admittedly.

  30. dover_beach

Tucker really doesn’t like John Bolton. Good call.

Tucker took to Bolton in that interview with a spiked baseball bat. I don’t think anyone on Australian TV has been this brutal to a member of the political class.

How’s this for trolling by the media — really bottom of the barrel but no surprise there used to be journalists now there are mostly j’ismists. Oh my mistake Eric George is a podcast producer so I guess it’s too much to expect anything remotely resembling ethics.

Folau strife threatens to engulf wife’s game
The Adelaide Thunderbirds have found themselves in a very tricky — if entirely predictable — quagmire after star Kiwi shooter Maria Folau joined her husband Israel in a public fundraising campaign as he fights his former employer Rugby Australia.

The netball community in Adelaide has been nervously watching Maria’s social media feeds for months after the Israel story exploded in April. Maria speaks frankly and is hard to predict.

Although she had supported her husband in the past, Maria has stayed silent in recent months.

The scenario was complicated by the sense that Maria wasn’t enthused by the situation.

When The Australian turned up to Sydney’s Truth of Jesus Christ Church to watch Israel preach, Maria was reluctant to pose for photos with her husband, and did so only at his insistence.

Collingwood star Ash Brazill recently told The Saturday Paper that Maria had supported her marriage to long-time partner Brooke Grieves in 2016.

Maria, apparently, has “always been lovely” to the couple, further muddying the picture.

But now she has taken the initiative, sharing Israel’s Instagram post, and linking to his crowd-funding campaign on her own profile. In doing so she has dragged the Thunderbirds, the Super Netball league, and the New Zealand Silver Ferns into Australia’s biggest sporting controversy.

The big question now is how netball responds to the situation.

Netball SA declined to comment. Ditto Netball Australia.

In April, Netball South Australia chief executive Bronwyn Klei, in an interview with The Advertiser, said that netball was an inclusive sport that rejected discrimination.

“We champion netball as a sport for anyone and everyone, from the players to umpires, spectators, clubs, and volunteers,” she said.

But it’s difficult to square that with the growing catalogue of comments Israel Folau has made regarding gay, trans, and gender-fluid Australians.

There are several gay players in Super Netball, all of whom enjoy the support of their club and teammates. Their presence in the sport has been entirely free of controversy for years.

More broadly, one of netball’s strongest and most marketable assets is its clean track record.

Themes of inclusion and support have driven much of the growing commercial appeal in women’s sport, too.

Coca Cola Australia’s current NRL advertising campaign includes the famous photo of NSW Blues forward Vanessa Foliaki kissing her Maroons partner Karina Brown after last year’s inaugural State of Origin match.

Netball South Australia must now assure fans its commitment to inclusion is sincere.

Failing that, will the Super Netball league step in? This is exactly the kind of issue the new league commission is suited to address.

What about Netball New Zealand? Folau figures as an essential part of the Silver Ferns’ World Cup campaign next month, and the story has been keenly followed across the ditch for months.

Many Adelaide fans, and the Australian netball community, reacted angrily when the Thunderbirds signed Folau last year. That anger has bubbled up again.

This news cannot have come as a surprise. Maria has backed her husband in the past, and the longer Israel’s saga goes, the less likely she was to stay silent.

If there was a contingency plan in place, so far it seems to be to batten down the hatches and hope netball can skate through a controversy that would engulf any of Australia’s major winter codes.

Maria Folau is at the end of her career. She has aleady said her next appearance with the Silver Ferns will be her last. She probably wants to start a family soon. But as you can see the media is hellbent to seek out and docs anyone who might not subscribe to their side honest agenda. That person shall not have the right to earn their living even if it is something as harmless as playing netball. I do not call these people gaystapo for nothing. Even atheist pro gay rights people like Brendan O’Neill have been warning for years 4 years about the authoritarianism which drives the gay left agenda and note that many Gaystapo are not actually homosexual themselves but what the gaystapo should remember is that 98% + of the population is not gay and never will be.

I’m simply expressing mine. Namely, that he’s a theological knucklehead who hates Catholicism. Heard any Pentecostalists denounce the Pell prosecution? Of course not. They love it.

I support Folau’s right to express his entirely correct view of homosexuality (though it is sinful to pronounce who will and won’t be damned by God). I support his legal action and hope he wins. I loathe the Pocockian ARU. But here’s the rub: if the only thing between him and the settlement of his legal bill is the sale of one of his properties, get stuffed. The honourable thing is to pay the bill himself. The comparison to Pell’s fighting fund is ludicrous. George Pell has had nothing but a clerical stipend for 50 years. That and the fact that nobody has imprisoned Israel Folau. (I know – they’d like to).

That would great. First you would put temporary bollards around them and signage saying ‘detour – work in progress’. That would need heavy machinery to transport the bollards from the depot. Then you’d have to have a meeting to determine the best approach to take for the job, after a smoking ceremony and welcome to country of course. After that a MS Project plan would be developed, and signed off by council engineers. Job safety analyses would be carried out and the paperwork submitted. A threatened species study and a carbon emissions offset plan would be developed. The proposed equipment would need to be safety inspected by certified mechanics. Then the job could proceed. Hopefully all that could be completed within a month, which I admit is an ambitious timetable. But freeing such selfless fighters for justice must be done with priority!

And actually I know a Pentecostalist who’s donated to Pell’s legal fund not once but several times. And frankly I also know atheists and non Catholics who have donated and in fact the ones who have been the most silent about the injustice done to Pell have been Catholics themselves.

  68. Leigh Lowe

C.L., my point about Pell was that it was the j’ismlamists at the Telly putting values on Folau’s assets, and deliberately jacking them up.
The reason I raised Pell is that the SMH article I linked to earlier today talked about “crowd-funding being problematical”, but didn’t describe how or why.
Who do you think they are talking about?
Folau for sure, but also Pell.
They are fuming that he was funded to a level that he could afford Richter (who managed to flatten all but one charge) and Walker for the appeal.
    Watch this space.

Thank you to all those who have given to my Legal Action Fund so far.

I am humbled and overwhelmed by the support I have received, for which I am very grateful.

Unsurprisingly, I have been criticised by Rugby Australia and some sections of the media overnight.

I decided to take legal action when Rugby Australia terminated my employment contract and ended my playing career after I expressed my religious beliefs on social media.

I have received thousands of messages from supporters who believe discrimination in the workplace is wrong and has no place in Australia or anywhere else.

Sadly, Rugby Australia have said that they will devote significant resources to fight me in court.
This shows I have a long and hard battle on my hands, which is why I am asking for your support.

The money that is donated will be used to fund my legal battle, which could take years.

Any strike on Iran will focus initially on command and control capabilities (no doubt assisted by allies with targeting information , as someone referred to above). The resulting paralysis, if executed swiftly and effectively, will reduce the need for follow-up strikes that may claim a greater loss of life. It is unlikely Iran will be able to respond significantly in a conventional sense, though proxies elsewhere may seek to save face.

Denying the Neuroscience of Sex Differences:

Imagine your response to picking up a copy of the leading scientific journal Nature and reading the headline: “The myth that evolution applies to humans.” Anyone even vaguely familiar with the advances in neuroscience over the past 15–20 years regarding sex influences on brain function might have a similar response to a recent headline in Nature: “Neurosexism: the myth that men and women have different brains” subtitled “the hunt for male and female distinctions inside the skull is a lesson in bad research practice.”

Turns out that yet another book, this one with a fawning review in Nature, claims to “shatter” myths about sex differences in the brain while in fact perpetuating the largest one. Editors at Nature decided to give this book their imprimatur. Ironically, within a couple of days of the Nature review being published came a news alert from the American Association for the Advancement of Science titled, “Researchers discover clues to brain differences between males and females,” and a new editorial in Lancet Neurology titled “A spotlight on sex differences in neurological disorders,” both of which contradict the book’s core thesis. So what in the name of good science is going on here?

Is he really a vegan IT? Whatever for ? In any case Christians have traditionally fasted by adopting a vegan diet on fast days – with fish and oil and wine permitted on some special faSt days. Eastern churches still maintain Wednesday and Friday as regular (vegan) fast days while in the west most churches have even abandoned their fish Fridays which was their version of traditional fasting. So Izzy may morph into a traditional Christian yet.

On that note, cradle born Christians on this blog should remember that Folau was raised Mormon and only left it a few years ago and you don’t just undo a lifetime of mormonism overnight. He may yet even escape pentecostalism I don’t know but I have observed this process often enough in others over the years as they leave one faith and adhere to another of the same or different sort. While converts of any sort tend to be more zealous than cradle born they also take a longer time to mature in their faith. That journey can take many many years. One of the most interesting aspects of this saga for me is watching non Pentecostal Christians’ reaction to the somewhat heterodox Izzy Folau. In some senses he has been a better Christian example then they have. And I certainly don’t share his veganism or his pentecostalism or his love for the King James bible except on aesthetic grounds as a great monument in the development of English language and literature.

The USA stayed out of WWI until most of the shooting was over and then got involved, but didn’t stick their neck out. Result: Europe destroyed itself, and the USA upgraded all its industry. Then along came WWII and the USA stayed out for as long as they were able and allowed Europe to destroy itself again. Result: the USA cleaned up … that’s what Made America Great the first time around.

Shooting down a really, really expensive US drone is first-class brinkmanship by the I ran ians – credit where credit is due, and all that. I think the loss of American life in that theatre due to I Rahn Ian activity would be a red line (which ought not be declared, incidentally).

But retaliation, if it comes to that, should be limited to neutering [email protected] nian capabilities in the Persian Gulf. And give the Israelis a pass to take out Eye Ran’s nuclear sites. No silly regime change, nation building stuff.

  228. None

Nota pentecostalism is just made up of self founded churches. They have no historical foundation to speak of all those some American ones may go back 100 years. I don’t think all of them spend much time preaching about Catholic theology even if easeys church does. I said right at the outset when Izzy first posted 1Cor 6 – but also based on a quick look on his Instagram feed – that he is not well catechized but then, how could he be? He is certainly a mature man with a desire for God but I wouldn’t call in the mature Christian. Very much a work in progress and it will be interesting to see how he goes in the next few years especially if he becomes a father.
I long ago decided that if there is a god and not just any god but a God who has some personal claim on Humanity ( because any other guys just doesn’t matter) then that God must be perfectly capable of dealing with Humanity and addressing individuals in a manner which they can understand ( otherwise that God doesn’t matter either because on first principles alone it is impossible for finite man to comprehend a non finite god and if that God is not non finite or infinite then he couldn’t be a God by definition). It is for this reason that Jooodaism and Christianity make the most sense to me whereas most other religions don’t. You can certainly appreciate aspects of other religions or find commonalities but you can never for example get me to accept anything like the caste system in Hinduism or the utter lack of anthropology in the ROP all the indifference to suffering in Buddhism etc etc.
