Thanks Stimpson. Better go tell the pope that Jesus (and Christianity) endorses prostitution. Next you’ll be justifying the kiddie f**ders.

    Ha ha ha ha ja!

Did they even watch any boxing before choreographing that shit?

I personally think Rob Schneider is amazing in it.
    Just breathtaking.

NASA ain’t going anywhere, let alone Mars. Failed organisation.
Meanwhile SpaceX is welding together stainless steel Starships (OK they won’t go interstellar but their distant descendants might) in tents in Florida and Texas SHIP yards. Arthur C. Clarke did say once that if the human race survives long enough, the word “ship” will mean “spaceship”.
Port Canaveral is allegedly where boats, including SpaceX landing barges, dock. I reckon it really is where Falcons take off and come back to harbour.
Morro would have been smarter to buy a small stake in SpaceX (they are available) with the $30 mill.

  9. areff

Stallone is really good (in non-Rambo/Rocky mode) in Cop Land

What is the stage between Socialism and Communism called? Alcoholism.

Boxing movies? If you haven’t seen The Set-Up (1949) you should. Robert Ryan is fantastic, as he always was until The Wild Bunch. Then he died.

Look let’s be honest I may have been a touch “prolific” in my posting today.

    Shall I go?
    I feel like I’m annoying.

Yes, you have overdone it today.

Stimpson, it’s a pity that Doomlord can’t read and not surprising that you can’t read for yourself either. Do not wonder why we have an innocent Cardinal in jail.

Ending scene from Rambo: First Blood. It sounds/looks like English 🙂

Colonel Trautman: It’s over Johnny. It’s over!

Rambo: Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don’t turn it off! It wasn’t my war! You asked me I didn’t ask you! And I did what I had to do to win, for somebody who wouldn’t let us win! Then I come back to the world, and I see all those maggots at the airport, protestin’ me, spittin’, callin’ me a baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me?! Huh?! Who are they?! Unless they been me and been there and know what the hell they yellin’ about!

Colonel Trautman: It was a bad time for everyone Rambo. It’s all in the past now.

Rambo: For you! For me civilian life is nothin’! In the field without a code of honor. You watch my back I watch yours. Back here there’s nothin’! Col. Trautman: You’re the last of an elite group. Don’t end it like this. Rambo: Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment. Back here I can’t even hold a job PARKING CARS!!!! UUHHHH!!!!! (Throws M-60 at wall and then slight emotional pause. He drops to the ground in a crouched position out of breath and very upset) Wha…I can’t…oh, I jus–omigod. Where is everybody? Oh God…I…I had a friend, who was Danforth. Wha–I had all these guys man. Back there I had all these fucking guys. Who were my friends. Cause back here there’s nothin’. Remember Danforth? He wore this black head band and I took one of those magic markers and I said to Feron, ‘Hey mail us to Las Vegas cause we were always talkin’ about Vegas, and this fucking car. This uh red ’58 Chevy convertible, he was talkin’ about this car, he said we were gonna cruise till the tires fall off. (upset pause) We were in this bar in Saigon. And this kid comes up, this kid carryin’ a shoe shine box, and eh he says uh ‘shine please, shine.’ I said no, eh an’ uh, he kept askin’ yeah and Joey said ‘yeah,’ and I went to get a couple beers and the ki–the box was wired, and he opened up the box, fuckin’ blew his body all over the place. And he’s layin’ there and he’s fuckin’ screamin’, there’s pieces of him all over me, jus like–! (frustrated he grabs at his bullet chain strapped around his chest and yanks it off) like this. And I’m tryin’ to pull em off you know? And ehe.. MY FRIEND IT’S ALL OVER ME! IT’S GOT BLOOD AND EVERYTHING! And I’m tryin’ to hold him together I put him together his fucking insides keep coming out, AND NOBODY WOULD HELP!! Nobody help me. He sayin’ plea I wanna go home I wanna go home. He keeps callin’ my name, I wanna go home Johnny, I wanna drive my Chevy. I said well (upset and breaking down) WHY I can’t find your fucking legs. I can’t find you legs. (softly now) I can’t get it out of my head. I fuc..I dream of seven years. Everyday I have this. And sometimes I wake up and I dunno where I am. I don’t talk to anybody. Sometimes a day–a week. (Almost inaudible) I can’t put it out of my mind…fucking…I can’t…….(totally sobbing now)

But out there with these natives, it must be a temptation to be god. Because there’s a conflict in every human heart, between the rational and the irrational, between good and evil. The Danes were relatively brave, dickhead. To repeat the Royal family hung in there and they didn’t give up their minority population to the Nazis. That’s unlike the Netherlands who actually didn’t just hand over J**ws , they did so willingly. And to repeat, more Dutch J**ws were killed than anywhere else, including Germany.

Dutch held out for Four days against the blitzkrieg.

    Wow. Impressive.

Denmark gave up after two hours. It took twice as long as that to then get the message to all German forces.

Denmark’s population in 1940 was 3.5 million people, Holland was 8 million. Also, you innumerate swine and geographical klutz Denmark’s, position made it impossible to hold them back. They were on the wrong side of Germany. It was useless to try and hold back.

    From Socrates’ link above:

Prominent MP Andrew Hastie, a former SAS Captain and Afghan veteran, along with two SAS insiders, called on the Australian public to back the work of the defence force Inspector-General who is investigating alleged war crimes.

You can get fucked Andrew. Here’s what Hastie wants us to back:

federal police detectives had travelled earlier this year to Afghanistan and gathered eyewitness testimony from people in and around the village of Darwan that implicates Australian special forces soldiers in the alleged brutal assault and murder … the AFP is undertaking an exhaustive search for witnesses … defence force Inspector-General sent Supreme Court of Appeal judge Paul Brereton and investigators to Kabul to also gather evidence about events at Darwan.

Spending millions of dollars to send groups of investigators to get ‘evidence’ from the enemy in order to prosecute Australian soldiers is disgusting and vile. Here’s who they were talking to:

Ali Jan’s wife, Bibi Dhorko, said: “I want justice because I have been widowed … my children are now helpless.” She said Ali Jan was a family man and a farmer with no involvement in the violence in the badlands of Southern Afghanistan. “He didn’t side with anyone and never had a gun. He was living in the mountain and doing his work, only going occasionally to the village if we needed any supplies.”

Seriously. Why would anyone believe a single word she says?

Mr Hastie also backed the defence force chief Angus Campbell for calling the inquiry …

Hastie has been in Canberra too long.

… and the SAS witnesses who had given evidence. “This has been driven from the ground up. This isn’t some witch hunt from above. It’s operators with moral courage who’ve spoken up.”

    Bollocks on stilts.

Mr Hastie’s comments have been backed by serving and former members of the SAS, who said most soldiers in the regiment welcomed scrutiny and accountability.

Yeah right. “Oh please come and scrutinize us. Send investigators to talk to the enemy. Maybe even send a feminist academic to report on our toxic masculine culture”, said no soldier ever.

The AFP’s trip to Afghanistan is the first time the agency has ever deployed detectives overseas to investigate alleged war crimes involving Australian soldiers.

An absolute disgrace. Everyone involved should hang their heads in shame. That includes Hastie after these quotes. Rather than backing this abomination, Hastie should be railing against it and the length of time it is taking to conduct it. Four years and still counting.

Official government forms that now have boxes for people to tick sex as male female or intersex are actually engaging in a form of doxing. Intersex, which is a chromosomal disorder is quite rare, less than 1% of the population, and it manifests itself in many different ways sometimes quite mildly and ranleigh visibly. It is very personal and nearly all intersex people never discuss the matter except with those who are very very close to them. To be confronted now with a form where they have to check male, female or intersex with a grand old stipulation that there would be a severe fine or other consequences should they make a false declaration is hugely unfair. Most intersex make a decision as to how they wish to present themselves and live accordingly. It’s only the very rare ones who decide to become fuckwhit activist who make a song and dance about it and those people need a psychiatrist. (In fact the very name intersex actually presupposes sex categories. Crank queer trans and intersex activists have actually created a nightmare for the majority of intersex people who prefer to get on with their lives without such busy body intrusion.

Just caught up with day’s thread. Sexy Sunday this morning, but good to see such a range of views civilly expressed; I think areff commented on that. None, darlink, I must correct an impression; all that Catallaxy knows of my intimate arrangements with my darling Hairy Ape is that our activities in that regard fit pretty much into the National average in terms of frequency. Hardly a stunning nor a porny revelation, that Hairy and I get it on with the frequency of Basil and Sibyl Fawlty these days. Exactly what we do is entirely our business and not for Catallaxy at all. I’ve always carefully said that. Where congress occurs, oh dear, I did once mention years ago the coldness of our erstwhile kitchen floor. Bad me. So young and naïve at that time. Actually, like most women, I find lurve far more significant than what Kae (a female commenter here from long ago) used to call ‘bumping uglies’. However, as an important part of life, brief allusions occasionally here from others to the glories of our reproductive imperatives brought into other realms than baby-making are hardly going to sink this good ship.

They were 3.8 million people and essentially blocked by geography from receiving support.

Explain, how you would prepare for total war in six months against a massive fully mobilized next door neighbor without any possibility of gaining assistance from others.

Well let me see, the capital city is on an island, and the British Navy at the time was the best in the whole world and the Danes had been a seafaring nation for at least a thousand years. The weakest aspect of the German military was their navy and they mostly had submarines which are useless for an invasion.

So my first priority would have been defending the capital. Also getting population and supplies over to the main island early would help a lot, leaving only harassment troops behind to place mines and disrupt the German tanks on the peninsula.

They actually had guns, but they never trained to use them. So I reckon I would have, you know, made that pretty high on my list to at the very least sink a few of the invading ships.

Norway and Sweden were both reasonably friendly powers at the time, with decent naval forces … might have made sense to get some help from them. Given that they knew they were next to get hit, they could have provided both ships and perhaps some aircraft. Supplies would not have been an immediate problem, because back in those days it was normal for people to keep stores for the Winter. Longer term supplies of course could have been brought by ship which is normal for people living on an island.

Forcing Germany to fight on the ocean so early in the war would have provided an excellent opportunity to put them at a disadvantage. Sweden was nominally neutral but that was a useless position, they ended up getting screwed anyhow, so Norway and Denmark should have pushed them into formally joining the allies.

Struth, you were speaking a lot of good sense earlier on today about what good men do. I think you are in essence right. Men respect women in social life and they do curtail their own excesses in our presence and set a certain tone to discourses (not always the same tone of course; there are varieties depending on when and where and context, but courtesy always forms part of it). Women may be ‘God’s Police’ in certain ways, but men will be the ones to get embarrassed and say ‘hold on, now’ with the Voice of Authority pulling up the crowd. (Just watched ScoMo and Trump, two blokey blokes who would call it if needed).

We saw a wonderful example of men being proper men today. We were on our way to visit our darling little grandchild boy aged 5 months and just back from London: a real Charlie Chuckles, which is what we used to call our son, his father, when he was a bub too. We were stuck at traffic lights on New South Head Road heading towards Bondi, so I had time to observe something going on over the road. An aggro Aussie bloke standing at the back of his white ute was just starting to lay into a little Asian guy and his girlfriend, both on a parked motorbike behind the ute. Obviously there had been some problem between these, involving both vehicles. Things were looking decidedly ugly turning.

Suddenly, down the road belts a big darkish bloke and holds the ute guy away from the cycle guy, and also prevents the cycle girl from going around the back of her guy and delivering a belt back. Sheer male power at work. He obviously didn’t know them, but was just stepping in, using brute force and male power to talk to and calm the ute guy while enforcing separation. However, he wasn’t enough, and it was becoming apparent that the situation would still break. Again suddenly, a big white guy in a t-shirt rippling muscles hoiks across the road in front of us and joins darkish bloke in holding the situation apart, adding his calming voice to the Asian couple and letting darkish bloke push ute guy back along close to his ute cabin.

Situation then under control. Normal exchanges of details etc about to commence, under firm supervision, the lights changed an we moved on. No two women could ever have done what those two
blokes did, saving both sides of this dispute probable GBH and much stupid court action.

    Men, at work.

It needs an official statement that with the benefit of hindsight, going to war in Afghanistan was a stupid idea and the soldiers were put into an unwinnable position. That does not, of course, justify war crimes but the individual troops cannot be blamed for mistakes made by their commanders.

The mission was to train up local troops who would become a military force supposedly loyal to the government that Western powers had set up in Kabul. Problem being that corruption is endemic, many people didn’t much like the government in Kabul, and some of the troops being trained were more interested in turning on their trainers. It’s always been a dumb mission, and it’s still a dumb mission. If you want accountability, ask about that.

After all the lying shit they have thrown at Trump, can you remember one moment of genuine actual anger from him?
    No. Cool as fuck throughout.

    ‘He never had a gun’

An Afghan villager who worked with livestock 24/7 and lived in an area notorious for flying lead from about six different directions, and who spent most of his time high in the hills, ‘never had a gun’.

And no-one’s antennae were raised by this? Nobody’s?

This is the equivalent of Kath Pettingill saying Dennis ‘Mr Death’ Allen was a good boy and never hurt a fly.

  190. Rex Mango

KD that is good point. Not many folk in country Australia never had a gun.

  191. Oh come on

Grigs is no longer with us. Or if he is, he has failed entirely. If he is with us, his current persona is inoffensive to the point that he hasn’t been spotted. If he’s here, we’ve shaped him into what we want him to be. If he’s here, well…you’re welcome, Grigs.

  192. Arky

I wonder if the “whistle blower” was actually targeting Biden? A Pocahontas agent?

Louise Milligan needs to write a book about the war crimes.

I’m sure she thought about it. Or has the same ammo. Spend of few years ripping somebody’s reputation plenty of slurs and innuendos and investigation without a complaint blah blah blah . I am sure she has thought about it. Except she has some slight problems with Ben rsr. One, he’s quite happy to sue and two; he could snap her neck with his little finger.

Would love to audit the cost of the AFP trip to Afghan. Could all have been done via video.

You’re arguing Denmark could have constituted a navy in 6 months? For what purpose when Germany walked over the border.

Did you read what I said? Any of it?

Denmark + Norway + Sweden + British Empire between them had plenty of ships, and were all opposed to German invasion. Sweden wanted to sit around and be neutral but could have been slapped out of that if the others had their act together.

Germany was fighting a war on many fronts with limited supplies, and very little liquid fuel. Admittedly, the allied powers didn’t know at the time how meager the German supplies were, but at any rate Germany had no capability for a long war of attrition and they knew that having already lost WWI that way. They certainly could not afford to lose a significant percentage of their troops in the frozen North.

Well said, K.D., but I’m standing by my original point that an envelope of “Long Green” under the lady’s nose will solve all her problems – I won’t even go down the path “Resettlement in Australia, on compassionate grounds…”

A half-decent Pope who wasn’t an older, nuttier version of Greta Aspy would have avenged Pell’s incarceration by now.

He’d have gone full Opus Dei on Milligan, The (Lying) Kid, the OPP, at least three judges and about half the strength of VicPol’s commissioned officers. Lots of punters taking early retirement, and having a nap under four feet of dirt somewhere.

But we don’t have a half-decent Pope. Christ, those blokes incited entire Crusades once upon a time. Weak as piss.

  202. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

But there are also plenty like me you find you weird. Unfortunately the cloak of anonymity seems to strip people of any notion of boundaries.

None. Hush a little. I don’t find you weird at all, and I know that there are many very discreet and sober folk on Catallaxy. I am one of them myself. I am not actually completely anonymous any more either; a few people who post here have met me IRL and can vouch for me in various ways.

Posting here for many years leaving the implication that I was younger than I am (a necessary foil to being doxed at the time, and very very useful that was when someone here was trying to ‘out’ me) but otherwise telling no lies about the incidentals of my life, means that I need to explain that I do indeed look much younger than I actually am. Thus it is not beyond the bounds of reality that I might still be able to be something of a flirt in the fifty-year old range. That’s all I mean now by ‘swimsuit’ photos etc. lol

In ten years, without covering too much that is personal, but with a few late nite conversations, those incidentals do tend to crop up in the chit-chat. That’s all.

None, you and I have had some good exchanges here on matters of real import. So how about you read my whole post rather than turn off on the first sentence?

  203. None

Tel, in 1945 there were still over 400,000 Cherman troops in Norway.

Literally Hitler refused to bring them back as it would be taken as weakness, and by the time he wanted them the Kriegsmarine couldn’t get the job done because 90% of it had morphed into artificial reefs.

  206. Oh come on

Biden ought to be toast. He’s clearly not up to it. HOWEVER if the DNC is as corrupt as it was in 2016 and Biden is the anointed one, we might find a lot of candidates inexplicably dropping out for various reasons and Fauxcahontas playing the role of Bernie in 2016.

Unfortunately for the DNC, its influence doesn’t extend beyond the primaries, and then its candidate will be on their own. Good luck!

  207. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Did anyone catch Paul Murray’s brief interview with Trump?

Yes. It was a breathless meet-the-headmaster moment for the most part. Murray shiningly happy. It could hardly have been anything else; Trump simply wanted a quick walk-by ‘greet opportunity’ to the Australian media, and Murray obliged, having been recommended and vetted. He did however get in one strong question, asking whether Trump felt trade with China or China’s aggression was uppermost in his mind. Trump said trade, soft-pedalled on Chinese aggression. Also said he was coming soon to Australia.

  208. Tel

How are you going to prosecute our rulers in a democracy, Tel?

Maybe the rule of law isn’t quite dead yet.

Even if the mistakes are not up to the level of which prosecution can take place, at least admitting bad strategy and demoting people might be a start.

Let’s imagine how government and courts might react in a similar disaster but with an industrial setting. Suppose there’s a factory fire and one worker hits the button and closes and locks a fire door with two other workers behind the door who die in the fire. Other workers escape the factory. After the fire the management say they have all the paperwork to show the factory was in compliance with regulations and government guys had been through there a month ago, ticked the boxes and signed off.

    Who would get blamed:
    * The workers who died because they didn’t get out.
    * The worker who closed the door locking the others inside.
    * The management because greedy capitalists.
    * The regulators and inspectors who signed off.
    * The government who came up with those regulation.

Now translate that to a military scenario and figure out who gets blamed.

  209. JC

Did you read what I said? Any of it?

Most certainly, which is what makes it so amusing.

Denmark + Norway + Sweden + British Empire between them had plenty of ships, and were all opposed to German invasion. Sweden wanted to sit around and be neutral but could have been slapped out of that if the others had their act together.

Britain had declared war by 1940, so what should have Denmark have done to entice the Brits into helping them even after the war declaration? Sweden was not going to war to help Denmark. It didn’t ally with Britain at any time.

Tel, the German invasion didn’t require a navy. You understand this, right?

Germany was fighting a war on many fronts with limited supplies, and very little liquid fuel. Admittedly, the allied powers didn’t know at the time how meager the German supplies were, but at any rate Germany had no capability for a long war of attrition and they knew that having already lost WWI that way. They certainly could not afford to lose a significant percentage of their troops in the frozen North.

If Britain had declared war, why do you think they didn’t help Denmark?

Current football finals ADF ad campaign has the logo ‘Do what you love’.

Memo from recruiting – the new campaign is paying off. We have reached our quota of young women, including single mums, wanting childcare and a career that combines both. Young men, ready to accept that they may die in serving their country? That’s a remarkably old fashioned view, isn’t it?

The lesbians (including the female ones) who now run the ADF have been after a pretext to destroy the SAS for several years. But they are only taking advantage of another cultural stand-off. I’ve written about this several times. There is a sour battle in the contemporary ADF caused by the fact that all of the combat over the past 20 years – all of the war fighting – has been done by special forces. These men now have as much – if not more – experience of war than all of the top commanders of the ADF combined; some have more combat experience than returned servicemen from Vietnam, Korea – even WWII. Meanwhile, the garden variety fake soldiery in the sheltered workshop ADF has spent those two decades being humiliated by feminists. Needless to say, they feel a bit short in the trouser department. They wear the uniform but the big dogs in special forces do all the fighting. That mystique – that masculine, Spartan mystique – is what their enemies are now trying to destroy. Roberts-Smith is the means to an end. These malicious turds will win if nobody speaks up for the SAS. It’s an eminently winnable campaign given the respect held for these men in Australian society.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_Denmark#/media/File:Denmark_islands.PNG

Although the peninsula (Jutland) would have not been defensible in the long term, some harassment and guerrilla warfare would have been possible … especially given the ability for the defenders to cut-and-run at short notice and scoot across to an island to take refuge.

  225. Knuckle Dragger

    Rex,

Yep. Chartres, in 1095. Urban II was supposed to be some sort of great master of oratory, and quite a few nobles and Cross-takers were surprised to find he had a reedy, thin stuttering voice.

  226. Oh come on

I don’t totally buy that, Lizzie. I mean, it’s perfectly acceptable to feel like a prospective cheerleader meeting the star quarterback for the first time. However, if you’re a journalist whose job it is to cover and sometimes meet important political figures, I think you have a professional obligation not to act like that when you do meet the star quarterback.

I didn’t find the news that Trump was coming to Australia “soon” to be much of a scoop, either. I could have told you that. An American President is always coming to Australia soon.

When you think about it, there has been a huge campaign to get girls into grunts and now that a couple of them are there, turns out Special Forces are the only ones in combat anymore, so the goal posts have shifted. There is huge incentive there for the career minded feminists to take down Special Forces.

James Cook University has lodged an appeal against Judge Vasta’s ruling of unlawful dismissal and subsequent costs in favour of Peter Ridd.

It appears that they have engaged Brett Walker – probably the most expensive solicitor in the country – and the one who lodged the High Court leave to appeal on behalf of George Pell.

It is extremely disappointing that Walker has taken this on, but I guess he has a family to support.

JCU has just engaged the highest paid counsel in the country to defend the reputation of their Vice-Chancellor, at your expense.

Weeding. The process of removing weeds from one’s garden.

You mentioned earlier the city of Copenhagen is an island. Part of it is. The other part sits about 100 meters from the mainland. You have to be kidding to suggest the Germans needed a navy to capture the other side of the city.

The Øresund is more than 100 meters across and besides that, the other side is Sweden not Germany.

The Swedes and Danes have been whacking one another across that stretch of water since prehistoric times but it’s also been a major trade route. If they had it in their heads to work together against the Germans, they were in an excellent position to do so. Like I say, they had 6 months to get their shit together, and more than that if they had been reading the tea leaves a bit. Even while Chamberlain was signing treaties he was also upgrading all the arms industries as a precaution. There was a pan-European arms buildup starting around 1937, so the Scandinavians at least had time to load a cannon or two.

  240. Oh come on

The weakest aspect of the German military was its logistics, not its navy. Just saying.

I don’t want to accidentally meet one of you one day and think oh s*** I know nothing about them except that they shave their pubes and like giving head.

Well, None, those are two things you will never know about regarding me should we meet over afternoon tea sometime. I have never mentioned either of them here, nor anything like, and never will. My fingernails or hairstyle and the perils of maintaining them, we can discuss those. Or my couture. Or my diamonds. So I am at a loss as to which ‘aspects of my intimate life’ you refer to. A common statistical instancing that Basil Fawlty was quite prepared to share with someone dining in his hotel? That’s about as far as ‘intimate’ has ever gone here with me. A little light-hearted this and that at times, nothing more. Others operate mostly in the same mode, although sometimes the Libertarian edge on this introduces a strong theoretical note into more raunchy talk. And why should it not?

Over tea, my dear, not needing to envision me in behaviour you find disreputable, you might however already know quite a lot about what I think about political and social issues. We could converse on that level. And if desperate, we could always discuss King Arthur.

    He’s fairly safe. 🙂
