Everyone at some point has been called upon to acknowledge “Elders past, present and emerging”. I’ve sometimes genuflected to their “wisdom, courage, creativity and resilience” at conferences six times in a day. But who decides who’s an Elder, or an “emerging Elder”, an older non-elder, or just a proud member of the XYZ Nation toting a Senior’s Card?

Big Four consultant PwC has grappled with this conundrum in a report handed to the Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission (VTAC) in December. The brief was to advise how an “Elders’ Voice” top-tier structure could work with the First People’s Assembly on Treaty, representing traditional landowners. PwC spent 5000 words defining an “Elder”, after consulting 201 of them in 19 workshops statewide. More than 80 per cent of the Elders want a way to challenge spurious Elders. PwC quotes one Elder: “There is no existing process to confirm ‘who is an Elder’. It’s hard enough to confirm Aboriginality, who would confirm Eldership?” Adds another: “Eldership should be by self-identification, but I am not going to sit in a room with a 20-year-old telling me they are an Elder.”

To make money, Virgin just needs to:
    1) wipe out its debt holders;
    2) re-set its cost base.
Both are a lot easier to force feed everyone while you’re in administration.

Bern, I don’t get what the big deal is here. Virgin declares insolvency and the debtors then move down into the ownership slot. What’s the big deal here. all it means is that the old shareholders are gonsky and a new lot of freshly minted move from the debtor line to shareholder.

There will be a vaccine, it will be ”fast tracked” like the Cervical Cancer vaccine, and if you don’t get it you won’t be able to attend daycare for adults, also known as ”work”.

The Cervical Cancer vaccine took over a decade to be finished. Frazer first became interested in the HPV in 1984 … .

I don’t know why people assume a vaccine will be available for COVID. There is no guarantee, possibly because it is an RNA virus.

You have to hand it to Tim Wilson.
The only person for the last 12 months questioning the liquidity of Industry Super.

… I get the impression that C-Bus and other construction linked funds are heavily into commercial property. Fund it, build it, jobs for da wukkers, rent it out to compliant corporates or Gummint departments a bit over the odds and Bob’s your uncle.

    Until he isn’t.

CBD property might take a permanent hit after this.
Work from home might become a thing.”

Bob Askin surely was your uncle if you were Sir Paul Strasser and other prominent, successful and mostly charming Hungarian Juice who built Sydney and Canberra CBDs.

The site for 14-24 College Street, Sydney, NSW Police Headquarters, was put together by Strasser’s Parkes Developments, the biggest and most successful developer during my cadetship into the early ’70s.

The State Superannuation Fund provided the construction funding and Sir Robin Askin’s police force signed up as tenant of this 20 storey office building, beyond the edge of the city’s A class office precinct and therefore not favored by tenants. Everyone was a winner. Sydney CBD became an important business centre on the efforts of these people, thwarting the destruction favored by the communist BLF and the Green Bans movement.

During the ’70s and ’80s Skandia House in Wooloomooloo Bay had difficulty attracting tenants as did the Westfield building and others in William Street. 14 College Street deftly avoided that problem.

This was how business was done then – Askin “Sir-ed” Strasser, Strasser supported him and was a generous benefactor to Sydney’s Juice community, established Shalom College at the University of New South Wales and supported many charities such as the Children’s Surgical Research Fund.

90% of vaccine trials end up in the bin as they don’t work. But this current environment is hugely different with a countless approaches being made to come up with one. Good work by The Oz in publishing a serious analysis of the possible mistakes in estimating the effect of the corona virus.
Coronavirus: infection may be far less deadly than thought
It (the research) suggests that the large majority of people who contract COVID-19 recover without ever knowing they were infected, and that the US infection fatality rate may be more than an order of magnitude lower than authorities had assumed. Based on this seroprevalence data, the authors estimate that in Santa Clara County the true infection fatality rate is somewhere in the range of 0.12 per cent to 0.2 per cent — far closer to seasonal influenza than to the original, case-based estimates.

Study estimates a more than 50-fold increase in coronavirus infections compared to official cases but experts have raised concerns about the reliability of antibody kits.

Wyatt rules out grocery subsidy for indigenous

The federal government has ruled out subsidising Aboriginal remote community residents’ grocery bills as a means of persuading them to stop flouting coronavirus movement restrictions by heading into towns like Alice Springs.

A coalition of 13 Northern Territory Aboriginal organisations on Monday called for Canberra to pay 20 per cent of the cost of essential items to discourage remote residents from “taking backroads” into regional centres to shop.

Biosecurity rules introduced to stop deadly COVID-19 from infecting vulnerable indigenous populations are meant to force anyone who leaves the bush to self-isolate for two weeks before returning. But anecdotal evidence suggests the rules are being widely flouted and that people may also be travelling to towns to drink.

Indigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt said that while the government “appreciates there are additional financial pressures associated with COVID-19, it does not support a direct subsidy or rebate on groceries at this time”.

BTW, Elizabeth enjoys a touch of mockery herself – when it’s her dishing it out. She was vocal in discussing my ‘wooden leg’, knowing – as an informed medical expert would know – that wooden legs went out decades ago, but the term is still used to mock amputees like myself.

    🙂

The fact Lizzie is gone is a statement in itself. Read between the lines sheep!

  205. Steve trickler

    I say, MV – Peter.

    Suss this group out.

  206. Overburdened

As David Attenborough has often said (soto voce)

And now the pack has the scent of blood….

  207. Overburdened

    Fn sotto autocorrect you fucker

  208. Overburdened

And here I was trying not to swear

Doesn’t Virgin fly routes around SE Asia and get their maintenance done in Singapore or maybe Honk Kong?

And what would you be buying if Sco Mo did commit to buy it?

  210. Ellie

    You win, bullies. Be happy.

    Virgin Australia in receivership

I thought only a trading halt/debt restructure? It could pay off for a white knight if the lock-down doesn’t last too long.

  212. egg_

The Virgin mess; I was thinking it was a good idea to do a bail out. Then I read Tom’s and FTB’s posts of today so have changed my mind. An example of why I come here.

IIRC some genius on TheirABC (Insiders?) was saying a (more) budget airline should arise from the ashes.
    Would anyone use it?

You learn new stuff here every day at the Cat.

  214. Old School Conservative

    She’ll be back.

    I agree Delta.
IIRC Lizzie has done this before.

  215. feelthebern

Virgin also operates that Tiger Air thing too.

    Get off my back!

    Sophie Tucker joke:

“My boyfriend, Ernie, said to me, ‘Soph, you have a flat chest and a tight twat’

“Ernie,” I replied, “get off my back.”

    Yes, voluntary administration.

    My bad, as they say.

    I plead encroaching senility.

    Thanks Steve.
Enchanting, isn’t it? #1 Son was fourteen the first time Marilyn and I took him to Paris.
He’s been with DiL 18 years now, and he’s still trying to talk her into learning French.

  219. calli

Seriously? Have I stumbled into the Third Form locker room?

Adults may leave whenever they choose. If the hazing got too much, best to go.

And now I’ve bought into the whole ridiculous, childish brouhaha.

Look what youse maaaaaade me do! 😭

Every man tells that story. 🙂

I’m assuming such credits will be killed by going into receivership.

Unsecured creditors. Near the end of the queue if Virgin goes down.

Given Virgin’s last balance sheet, I think they would be looking at 20 cents in the dollar in that case.

  222. calli

I thought I’d add a crying emoji for effect.

Now I can give myself a card.

On second thoughts we really can’t allow open skies here because Qantas would have maintain compensation arrangements aligned to the domestic industrial relations laws and polices. It’s just not going to happen.

    Some Trivia (or maybe not)

    A Day for Everything

The US has a National Proofreading Day, celebrated each year on March 8. The day is to promote error-free writing.

We all make typos, grammar mistakes, and spelling errors when we write, especially if we are moving too fast! National Proofreading Day is an opportunity to slow down, proofread our work, and then proof it again. And if you’re lucky enough to work with an editor who proofs your work for you, National Proofreading Day is a great opportunity to thank them for always ensuring that your writing is free of mistakes.

I remarked he spoke sense about turdball. He spoke about turdball very politely which is the problem with the wimps in the LNP.

Now generate some better insults or STFU.

A militant vegan YouTuber who lives on fruit and potatoes says she’s saved a thousand dollars by ditching toilet paper for a ‘bum gun’ amid the COVID-19 crisis. As coronavirus-fearing hoarders continue to strip supermarket shelves of toilet paper, controversial vegan Freelee the Banana Girl (pictured) claims she has a solution to the shortage. The 40-year-old Queenslander revealed on her YouTube channel that she uses a bidet-style hose she calls a ‘bum gun’ instead of toilet paper.

Minchin is a spoilt-rotten little rich boy, the son of a surgeon who was himself the son of a surgeon.

I’d never known who Minchkin was apart from that crazed cartoon by Leak with a mascaraed, shoeless, piano player.
Imagine my surprise when I found out it was a for realz person.

Jeez NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant looks like a joyless trout face.
