Cheers all. Thanks Dr Beaugan will look at the Commbank app. OK nextly I take I am being a little too early to jump? I notice the caution in some quarters.

The trading is done through comsec which is responsible for the app and does the brokerage. It’s connection with combank is tenuous, but they both access your trading account. Start off soon but very small at first until you get the hang of it. You can teach yourself the jargon by consulting the interwebzy thingo. You can branch out into non-asx shares later.

When to get serious is impossible to say, but you’re can track the asx 200 and the dow jones industrial average by saying the names into Google. The only risk is that you’ll get people advertising their advisory services at you.

A lot of guessing what share prices will do is looking at the news and thinking “What will fuckwits do when they read that?”

Does anyone here use, or know someone who uses, one of those Bluetooth tracker apps for finding lost keys and stuff? Any recommendations (or advice on what to avoid)?

At this stage, cost is not a particularly relevant factor as I’ve just had a nightmare 24 hours looking for hubby’s lost keys and wallet. His preferred method is the “rant and rave” as he stalks around the house looking in the same places over and over. Asking when he was last sure he had them and then talking through his movements since, mostly gets me growled or yelled at.

We eventually found them in the ground just under the verandah. Genius had sweated a lot when working and had stripped of shirt and trousers and put them over the verandah rail to dry out, not noticing wallet and keys fall out the pocket.

The incident happened on the Eastern Freeway near Kew and the Chandler Highway about 5.40pm today where two on duty officers pulled over a Porsche driver for a roadside drug test.
Two more officers arrived in an unmarked car as backup, with all four then hit by a semi-trailer.

Maybe the stupid blue maggots will stop pulling people over in ridiculous places.

The last effort I saw by one of these cockheads was a U turn across solid Hume Highway traffic followed by pulling the driver over 50m from a rest area whilst leaving the cop car protruding 0.2m into the LH lane. All over someone who was doing 115km/hr. All this result in a shitload of hard braking and swerving, if a truck had of been in the mix it would have been a different story.

Found sleeping next to a car in Kensington about midday, the former AFL star allegedly had 2.5grams of meth in his possession and was taken to the local police station for questioning over a separate matter he was wanted for, according to Nine.

It’s understood Cousin became aggravated at the George Street station and was then transferred to the Perth Watch House.

The 41-year-old was refused bail and is expected to appear on a string of fresh charges in the Northbridge Magistrates Court tomorrow, according to Nine.

It has been eight months since he was released from prison after charges of stalking and threatening to kill his ex-partner was dropped.

Kensington Police were initially called to the scene after his car was reported for erratic driving in Victoria park around midday.

Not as far as I’m aware. It is heading up to Bulleen Road and also Springvale Road, but I don’t travel the Eastern often enough to know about the Chandler Hwy off-ramp.

Regarding the police cars, per the links nota posted, there were an unmarked car and a highway patrol car. The Eastern always has unmarked cars during peak hours. When I did drive on it every day I saw so many drivers pulled over by the plain police cars that I even memorised a bunch of number plates.

As for the driver, he needs to be hit with every broken law they can find. There are some absolute moron truck drivers out there and they just make it harder for the good ones to make a living and get the job done.

Four Victoria Police officers died when a truck collided with cars in Melbourne’s east after a speeding Porsche driver was detained.

One female policewoman and three men died just after 5.30pm on Wednesday on the Eastern Freeway near Chandler Highway, about 5km east of the CBD, police said.

The semi-trailer partially jack-knifed after reportedly hitting two cars on the Eastern Freeway in Kew, Melbourne
A speeding motorist in a Porsche was detained in the moments before the crash, police said.

The Porsche driver fled the scene after miraculously surviving the crash, possibly because he was outside the car at the time it was hit.

It was a Porsche 911 that had been impounded before the smash.

Two officers initially detained the Porsche driver before the second team of police arrived.

The investigation is being conducted by the Homicide Squad.

It is the biggest death toll in the history of the Victorian police.

  109. Some History

The Victoria police commissioner, Graham Ashton, said two senior constables and two constables were killed. One senior female officer was killed, along with three male officers. One was relatively new to the force, Ashton said.

He said two officers intercepted a Porsche 911 that was speeding on the freeway, and after pulling over the vehicle they decided to impound it. Shortly after two other officers were called to assist at the scene, a large refrigerated truck for a poultry company drove into the four police officers.

The driver of the Porsche fled the scene, Ashton said, and he urged the driver to get in contact with the police.

But yes outbound at 5.40 would normally be pretty slow but ATM?

    Obviously somewhat faster.

  111. Infidel Tiger King

The state’s most senior officer said those killed were one female and one male senior constable and two male constables.

“One of the officers was only very recently in the force,” Mr Ashton said.

He said police would await the results of the truck driver’s blood analysis while searching for the runaway driver, who he urged to hand himself into police.

Officers from the homicide squad and major collision units will investigate the deaths.

“We really are still piecing together what occurred here today,” Mr Ashton said.

Very inexperienced cops by the sounds of it.

The runaway driver better flame shock or he will be in strife.

One possible scenario is the rule in Viktorianistan that, when you see the red and blues you slow to 40kmh.
Causes a lot of disruptive driving in a 100 kmh zone.

    This, too.

I was behind a car + trailer as we rounded a corner at 110km/h, and there they were not 50-70 metres away. Trailer combo threw the anchors out and bloody near jackknifed but veered right and nearly cleaned up the cheese cutters on the other side of the two lanes. Cars behind going in all directions to avoid it.

If they are looking to avoid fatalities, they need to change that rule to “drop 20”, or something similar. 110 to 40 is just bloody dangerous, especially around blind corners.

  147. Knuckle Dragger

    Okay.

Inbound on the Eastern at the place nilk described above. Wide and flat – and straight. Stonking big emergency/stopping lane on the left designed for B-doubles.

At that time, even for inbound in normal times it would have been chockers. Not today, due to you-know-what. Next to nothing coming inbound, except for the Porsche using all the inbound lanes at such a speed that when the unmarked car dragged it in it was going to be impounded. The joint’s lit up with red and blues from the unmarked car.

Driver jacking up, all over the shop, wigging out. Unmarked car cops keep him in the car rather than let him out to get run over are without a roadside drug testing kit and ask another car with said kit to turn up. Marked car (both are traffic cars) then turns up. More red and blues.

So – Porsche pulled over. Unmarked car parked back from the Porsche and across a bit to the right, making a ‘corridor’ for the jacks to walk up to the Porsche without any traffic near-missing them. Marked car is behind the unmarked car and offset to the left.

The two from the latest car get out to join the first two, making four around the Porsche.

Truck veers into emergency lane, smacks into the marked car with its front left corner, the unmarked with the front right corner, throwing both straight at the jacks. Truck continues on, ending on top of the Porsche and bits of jack. There are no skid marks.

With the eternal fortune of the shitxunt the Porsche driver is able to fuck off on foot. Three dead at the scene, one dead en route to hospital. Truck driver under guard in hospital, and the Homicide Squad is running the job.

I have spoken before of cops that fail to target shit people, to keep them away from normal people. These cops are generally hated by normal cops, and it will come as no surprise to learn these are the same cops scaring sunbathers and golfers, because the normal cops still have cop shit to do.

Sadly, and although they are a necessary evil, traffic cops are these cops. If you’re going to be a traffic cop, I suppose if you wanted to go a certain way then smacked by a speeding truck would be it. Normal ones just hope for a hail of gunfire.

It is both wrong and stupid for people to come out and say (which they will) that everyone expects to come home from work. Everyone HOPES to come home, but it’s not just the cops who have jobs that have the potential to get really dangerous really quickly. Lots of other occupations are the same, and if not regulated, they’re worse.

The difference is that cops are more likely to get murdered at work, which is still highly unlikely but the bigger risk is there. Didn’t happen in this instance as far as I can tell, but it won’t make a difference to the traffic punters’ families.

This will no doubt be pored over for months, and the conclusion will more than likely be the usual.

An inadvertent fuckup of gigantic proportions mixed in with a confluence of time, people and space that had the worst possible outcome.

Disclaimer – this is not advice. See a fianacial advisor etc.

    1) Where/how to buy
    – Commsec – very intuiative, they have a great app, its cheap ~$20 a trade and they automtically every year send you an easy report to hand to your tax accountant
    2) How to construct a portfolio
    – I’d go with an index fund. Here you are buying not 1, 2 or 5 stocks that have their own risks, but 200 in the case of the S&P/Asx200 (Australias benchmark) or 500 in the case of the S&P500 (the US benchmark stock index)
    – The index fund should be the core of your portfolio. You get a diverse range of stocks, no individual failure like Virgin Australia, HIH Insurance etc will take you down.
    – I suggest getting funds out of Australia into the US. Our economy and market is not very diverse.
    – You can buy these index funds through the Commsec ASX platform. IVV.ASX is the S&P500 – unhedged, while IOZ is the ASX200.
    – Around this core holding, you can sprinkle in some individual stock names. These are companies you know extremely well. Having heard about Westpac or BHP is not knowing them extremely well. I’m talking what are their core assets – for BHP its their iron ore rail and port system, for QAN its their landing slots in Australia, for CWN is owning a monopoly licence for a Casino in Victoria.
    – Understand the key driver of the business of those. Its usually 1 or 2 factors to keep an eye on that go to revenue growth and more importantly margins. You need to get a clear view in your head what the business does and what news is good or bad for the business.
    – If you can honestly say you know what the assets are better than 99% of people, what the drivers are and track changes in these quick than others – then you should invest in those single names.
    – If not – stick to mostly index funds.
    – when looking at financial reports, look at in this order of importance 1) cashflow statement, 2) balance sheet – particularly the debt and 3) the P&L statement.

Struth could better comment on this, but truck drivers are vital part of the economy & also involved in fatal traffic accidents more often than your average motorist. They then cop prison time to set an example to the community & are invariably males.

Makes you wonder whether they do hate Trump as much as they say they hate him … if they had a few principles they would simply refuse the drug then have nothing to complain about.

    Sex Academia-Style: Let’s All Have a Tree-some
Tony Thomas Quadrant Online 22nd April 2020
Picture a climate-conscious Melbourne University arts graduate, Nancy, out of work and applying to stack shelves at Woolies.
    Recruiter: Any special skills?
Nancy: Sure. I did a lot of inter-disciplinary study with the university’s flagship Sustainability Research Institute (MSSI).
    Recruiter: Like what?
Nancy: Well, last July 8, I went to an all-day symposium on “Hacking the Anthropocene”. MSSI was an overall seed funder and major seminar sponsor, and one of the speakers was an authority on tree humping.
Recruiter: I see. What’s the “Anthropocene”?
Nancy: You really haven’t heard of the Climate Emergency and the Anthropocene? It’s “a name coined for the emerging geological era in which humans are centralised as the dominant planetary force. Perhaps intended to evoke ecological concern, it draws on settler colonial discourse, problematically homogenises all humans as planet destroyers and implies that we are locked into these petrifying ways of being.”
Recruiter: We might get back to you. This Wuhan Virus is keeping us pretty busy right now with the empty shelves. Thanks for dropping by.
Nancy’s interview was cut short before she could elaborate on that symposium with its “exciting schedule”, which featured a keynote talk on “Composting Feminism” (not a misprint).
This Do-It-Together symposium was booked out by eager academics and their students, some fretting on the waitlist. It was at the Abbotsford ex-Convent, with vegan morning tea and lunch and gender-neutral toilets. At least the morning tea wasn’t drunk from jam jars.[1] In each of three sessions, master Anthropocene Hackers described their hacks (example: “Rupturing the colonial Anthropocene”), and the audience got to “hack back”, a hip term for discussion. Some participants were “theys” rather than he or she.
The revelations were interleaved with “walkshops” where attendees “weathered with what-ever mid-Winter provides”, offset by raincoats and fleecy underwear. Those walkshops were about ‘Un-earthing. Wild concrete on living soil’, curated by visual ecologist Aviva Reed and celebrating “the sedimentation of our imaginations.”[2] Her walk notes are in need of Google Translate, but here goes:…

    As expected:

‘The senior doctor aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship has given damning evidence on day one of a special inquiry into the debacle. Dr Ilse von Watzdorf was on the ship when it docked in Sydney Harbour on March 19.

‘More than 2,700 passengers freely disembarked, several of whom were infectious with COVID-19. At least 21 deaths and 600 cases of the virus can be traced to the ship. The debacle is currently the subject of a police inquiry and a Special Commission of Inquiry which began on Wednesday.

‘Von Watzdorf gave evidence on day one, saying she swabbed passengers who had presented with flu-like symptoms. She was asked whether she thought it was “appropriate for all of the passengers to disembark en masse”.

‘Her response: “I was surprised that we were allowed to do that without waiting for the results to come through. “If it was my decision I would’ve perhaps waited like the previous time.”’

There also appears to be word coming through that the senior doctor on the Rubella Princess didn’t complete the mandatory Illness Log for passengers until the day after 2700 carriers started walking around Sydney.

    Hey Doofus… Cronkite.

    Our Pauline

“We would argue that 25 per cent should be the ceiling of where we need to go, but we need to first get to 25 per cent,” Mr Willox said.

“Everything in terms of how we tax and how we fund and how we spend must be up for grabs. This is why governments, both state and federal, will need to be courageous and act quickly. We need to give serious consideration to how we deal with consumption tax.”

But One Nation and Centre Alliance have already rejected the push to reduce the company tax rate to 25 per cent for businesses with an annual turnover of more than $50m, declaring there would not be a compelling case even following the coronavirus pandemic.

The company tax rate for businesses with an annual turnover of less than $50m is 27.5 per cent and will reduce to 25 per cent in 2021-22. For all other businesses it remains at 30 per cent.

    And Our Pauline, the economist.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who controls two crucial Senate votes, said she was determined not to give the government support for big business tax cuts.

“If we have to give tax cuts to corporations, it’s not going to give us any guarantee that they’re going to increase their businesses (here),” Senator Hanson said.

Great, we have the highest corporate tax rate in the western world now and our Pauline thinks it shouldn’t be cut, because according to her research, it doesn’t do a thing for the economy.
