Sweden has “got quite a long way to the same effect”

Epidemiologist Who Triggered Worldwide Lockdowns Admits: Without Instituting Full Lockdown, Sweden Essentially Getting Same Effect

People enjoy the sunny weather in Tantolunden park in Stockholm on May 30, 2020, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, whose bleak projections of future deaths from COVID-19 influenced governments around the world to institute massive lockdowns, admitted of Sweden, which did not institute harsh lockdowns, “It is interesting that adopting a policy which is short of a full lockdown – they have closed secondary schools and universities and there is a significant amount of social distancing, but it’s not a full lockdown – they have got quite a long way to the same effect.”

From here. What really happened in Sweden we may never know. But as CL points out, they have a new toy to play with so who cares?

    “Expert” got it wrong?
    I am shocked!

Not listening Neil thanks very much. How come you’ve still got your job Professor? This was about your 3rd appalling modelling and you’re “work” wreaked havoc on much of the world all the while you and your floosie broke the so called rules. Credibility shot to pieces.

  3. How come you’ve still got your job Professor?

How come all the warming worriers still have their jobs? That’s just a rhetorical question.

  4. Watch Your Back

Ferguson, dubbed Professor Pantsdown in the UK, has been wrong for most of his career. Food and Mouth, SARS, H1N1. He’s a clown, who calculates and formulates and computes his absurd models to arrive at wholly exaggerated predictions. He is a twat in twat’s clothing.

The UK has junked its economy in a mere 3 months because of this fool. He is to epidemiology what Tim Flannery (who?) is to global warming.

And yet he’s a professor in good standing on a grand salary at the UK’s most prestigious scientific institute of higher learning, an institute overseen by none other than Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg.

    What does this tell us?

That in the elite post-modern worlds of academe and politics – unlike the everyday world of business, where mistakes cost the owners money and thus usually result in repurcussions like demotion or the loss of employment altogether – nobody ever pays a personal price for their incompetence. Successes are privatised – they go on your CV – but failures are socialised – the masses pay the price.

    Welcome to the new feudalism.

Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, whose bleak projections of future deaths from COVID-19 influenced governments around the world to institute massive lockdown, should be prosecuted and put away for a long time!

  7. Tel

Professor Neil Ferguson’s report does not in any place advocate “lockdowns”.

Indeed, it’s quite difficult to find anyone who can be said to be the UK government architect of “lockdowns”.

Surely disgraced and discredited Professor Niall Ferguson …

I see how this j’ism thing works.

  9. Roger W

Amazingly. Professor Pantsdown is still advising the UK Government SAGE committee!!!!!!!

“Prof Ferguson resigned from the main Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) committee last month after The Telegraph revealed that he broke social distancing rules to meet his married lover. On Tuesday, however, a witness at the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee revealed that he is still helping shape policy, leading a team contributing to one of the most influential Sage sub-committees.”

In any set of projections from different experts, you’ll get a best case and a worst case scenario.

It’s still politicians’ job to decide and among the options are “none of the above” and “something completely different”.

Instead, they have shirked responsibility and thrust a bunch of technocrats of varying competence, aka “The Science”, into the hot seat.

These technocrats, by definition, being career bureaucrats, have no sense of human behaviour and economy and have proceeded to fuck everything up.

But the fault still lies with the politicians who empowered then

  13. Oh come on

Why are the musings of this quack remotely newsworthy? The man should be drawn and quartered, or whatever the professional equivalent of that is.

It’s hard to quantify how much carnage he has wrought upon the world as a consequence of his crack-handed, hysterical calculations. In fact, we probably won’t know with any precision for several years.

Hundreds of thousands of additional deaths – maybe millions. Hundreds of billions of additional destroyed wealth – maybe trillions.

  14. Oh come on

    Cack-handed, not crack-handed. Thanks, autocorrect.

Yet the epidemiologist behind Sweden’s no-lockdown strategy has now back-flipped.

“If we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done,” Anders Tegnell said in an interview with Swedish Radio.

Hygiene seems a big factor in CV-19 hot spots, globally.

COVID-19: William Farr’s way out of the Pandemic

Farr shows us that once peak infection has been reached then it will roughly follow the same symmetrical pattern on the downward slope.

There is a predicted time lag from infection to COVID deaths of approximately 21 to 28 days.

Once peak deaths have been reached we should be working on the assumption that the infection has already started falling in the same progressive steps. Using deaths as the proxy for falling infections facilitates the planning of the next steps for reopening those societies that are in lockdown.

In situations of high-density the course of infection may be prolonged; mortality may be extended in confined populations (e..g, in nursing homes and hospitals) particularly if distancing cannot occur and if stringent measures to prevent onward infection are not instituted. In the previous SARs outbreak, a lack of isolation facilities allowed infection of patients admitted to the same wards for other reasons: many admissions – as is the case now – did not have typical signs of SARS, which led to worsening of infection control.

In the midst of a pandemic, it is easy to forget Farr’s Law, and think the number infected will just keep rising, it will not. Just as quick as measures were introduced to prevent the spread of infection we need to recognise the point at which to open up society and also the special measures due to ‘density’ that require special considerations.

But most of all we must remember the message Farr left us: what goes up must come down.

Continuing to post comments and references that only agree with your pre-conceived ideas is known as cognitive bias. It’s right out of the leftist playbook. Are you sure you don’t work for theirABC?

  22. Watch Your Back

    Agreed Egg,

The migrants don’t observe social distancing or hand washing.

Then there’s the death rate in care homes, which is a scandal.

But as a strategy I think Sweden had it right. It has a death rate half of Scotland!

  23. Yet the epidemiologist behind Sweden’s no-lockdown strategy has now back-flipped.

That is the real story here. Sweden was supposed to be the way things should be done, according to you lot, but it was a massive failure.

Phew. I have read a number of Niall Ferguson’s books and found them uniformly excellent. Good to know I haven’t been wasting my time. Thanks. Lucky I don’t do this for a living.

  27. The woman this four-eyed twat was shagging was well out of his league and working for Avaaz – a Soros funded entity. Nobody seems to find this strange at all.

This Salome-esque slag was likely the one who asked for the West’s head on a platter and the dweeby fuck’s micro head said “yes!”

They both need locking up forever. Oh…and Soros assassinated and assets seized.

Funnily enough, egg, I work for a living and can’t be cruising around a blog all day.

    bedwetting old fart

Seriously? Is that the best you have? I am most likely younger than you and definitely more lethal.

    Keep hiding.

  29. The critical question seemingly never asked is “what then”?
Are we in a permanent state of semi-lockdown to protect the vulnerable? Are the most vulnerable also the greatest burden on finite public health resources or because poor lifestyle choices (obesity, smoking or sedentary behaviour) are a contributor to their present vulnerability to COVID-19?
Although I vehemently oppose Euthanasia, culling the herd of the weak and enfeebled is not cruel, just Gaia’s way of balancing our overall community health.
Are we looking forward to a permanent state of shutdown because the “Left” deems it appropriate?
