Support Facebook

Now I realise that many haters hate Facebook – Fascistbook one person called it when I was singing the praises of  their currency Libra – but right now they are making a spirited defence of free speech.

Jim Steyer, the chief executive of Common Sense Media, one of the groups behind the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, lambasted Sir Nick and Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder.

“Nick Clegg is full of BS [bullshit]. He and Zuckerberg have a sophomoric approach to free speech that would see them flunk fifth-grade civics with their libertarian ‘free speech trumps all other values in society’ approach,” Mr Steyer, who is also a professor of civil rights and civil liberties at Stanford University, said. “Facebook and Nick Clegg continue to amplify hate, racism and other messages that are undermining our democratic norms.”

“Professor” denigrates the lived experience and basic understanding of rights that ordinary people have. That is a very ugly look. It is always a very ugly look.

Facebook does not amplify hate etc. Those people being ‘hateful’ on your Facebook page are the people you have chosen to ‘friend’ – by definition they are your friends, your family, your associates.

For those people who think Mark Zuckerberg is the fascist here, that somehow  Mark Zuckerberg is the villain in this story – just imagine what life will be like when the Jim Steyer’s of the world are telling you what you can say and think in public and private.

  1. Yesterday I was siding with a personal injury lawyer from St. Louis – who was defending his home.
Today I’m siding with Zuckerberg & Facebook.

The world has turned upside down.

    Hear, hear.
There should be a lot more posts like this at the Cat.

This is why libertarianism and conservatism are doomed. You don’t defend the enemies of civilization, even if they look to do one right thing. That is not how you win wars.
I wonder how many “conservative voices” have been deplatformed from Facebook, and then Zuckberg comes out in defense of free speech and you buy it hook, line and sinker.
Not to mention that “free speech” is a non existent right that never existed at all except as a way to further the progressive dream of destroying western civilization.

Facebook “are making a spirited defence of free speech.”

Hilarious; funniest thing I have read all year.

Mr Steyer, who is also a professor of civil rights and civil liberties at Stanford University,

Pardon me, since I’m an uneducated yob, but the Prof Steyer’s statements make it sound like civil rights and civil liberties are at war with each other. How can he be a professor of both?

  6. NoFixedAddress

“They” have been trying to get rid of Zuckerberg for some time.

Search – shareholders want zuckerberg gone

Interesting take on what is taught in 5th Grade Civics these days, though!

How about posting the full text of this “spirited defence.” The link tales me to a paywalled page, with three paragraphs which don’t inspire confidence.

There’s more of this happening as the elite techies start to realise that the horde of barbarians they’ve let loose will soon come for them. First against the wall and all that. Very hard to make yourself look like a prole when you’ve tens of billions to your name.

Yep, even 10 year olds get it.

The choice is freedom or slavery.

While it’s fairly unlikely(…..) that they could take on Facebook and conquer the social media world, it’s amusing to think that a privatised ABC, open thus to (horror of horrors) commercial advertising could probably do quite nicely as a safe place for easily triggered Strayan snowflakes in this febrile world.

They’ll be too busy keening and plotting revenge to think of such things, of course.

“For those people who think Mark Zuckerberg is the fascist here, that somehow Mark Zuckerberg is the villain in this story “

I think that Zuckerberg does believe in free speech…but he is weak…..very weak so watch Facebook cave to these fascists. As for Clegg….I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him. He’s a snake.

I would like to know when Bezos is going to get the ‘Seattle chop’ treatment for his blatant disregard for cultural sensitivities in having the ‘hide’ to name his piddling company the same as one of the greatest Gaia sites, The Amazon, and continuing to publish a paper with the name Washington.

    For shame Bezos.

    White privilege much!

Hasn’t stopped Facebook removing Trump videos and users for having wrongthink.

They are just as bad as the rest.

    Break big tech up.

Facebook like Google probably has Antifa staff amongst them. Excellent jobs for youngish white middle class kids with wealthy parents, able to influence society through Facebook etc and thriving on some kind of psychopathic power. But won’t show their faces. Zuckerberg is caught in between.
In fact, he is probably scared of their power.

Antifa members are not street people. They belong to good families in well off suburbs and are mostly white.
    But kind of disturbed generation.

Incidentally, Stefan Molyneux has been banned from YouTube, in another spirited defence of free speech.

Lefties hate Zuckerberg. He is seen as a supervillain. Right now he is under intense pressure to censor hate speech:

Major multinational companies including Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Verizon and Unilever have joined forces to boycott Facebook ads, saying the company doesn’t do enough to remove hate speech.

  22. Cynic of Ayr

    Is Sinc for real?
It’s only a while since he posted some bullshit that got him lambasted from pillar to post for it, now he says Facebook is a goody?
I gotta admit. I dunno if I’m being trolled or not. I hope I am.
Facebook, and moreso Twitter, are a reasonable idea that was let loose for profit. If Zuckerberg – of “the dumb fucks” fame – kept it as a social chit-chat medium, and only made a few million dollars, it’d probably still be fine. But no, he had to get all self important, and had to get in on the politics and push the Dimocrat propaganda. Now both sides have the shits with him, and I couldn’t care less how much trouble he’s in.

Meanwhile, it is disturbing but not surprising that Facebook has just appointed a former editor of the Guardian and former socialist Danish PM to their board of “content moderation” which apparently is “independent”.

There’s a word in the headline that would have gotten you automatically blocked. Maybe you can figure out what it is.

Journalists, politicians and judges to sit on Facebook’s free speech panel

Sounds like a smart play by Zuckerberg.

In the meantime, Coca cola, Starbucks, Verizon, and Unilever are boycotting Facebook because it allows too much hate speech.

  27. Boris

Good post Sinc. I was saying the same thing on lone threads
