To see ourselves as others see us

It’s an old story here, but there is quite an interest across the world in the Melbourne version of the lockdown. See, for example, this from Zero Hedge: Melbourne Police Surround & Arrest 2 Elderly Women Resting On Park Bench For ‘COVID Violation’. They find us absurd. They think we’re idiots. Who’s to say they’re wrong?

“Victoria Police have lost all commonsense,” one Australian eyewitness quipped upon posting a video showing police telling a 38-week pregnant woman she can’t sit down due to coronavirus and social distancing enforcement measures.

It’s one of many recent viral videos to come out of Australia’s southeast state of Victoria, home to Melbourne, showing absurd “crackdowns” by police for alleged coronavirus policy violators. “As a pregnant woman I can’t sit in the park?” the incredulous woman whose story was covered widely in local media asked the couple of officers who harassed her.

Apparently not… because COVID. “You can only be out of your house for one of four reasons,” the officer responded. “One of those would be exercise. Sitting in a park is not one of the four reasons.”

They’re laughing at us. I don’t find it quite so funny.

    ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING TERRORISTS!

  2. Roger

5 police to arrest two elderly women.

Perhaps they travel in groups for protection, because they all seem to be overweight and hence unfit.

  3. Bronson

Do Vicpol give their recruits any training or are they just like the hotel quarantine fiasco and contract out to a bunch of carpetbaggers that then sub it out to a bunch of no nothings? It would appear that the child officer in the video has not got a clue about either the made up law or the reality of trying to interpret and enforce it. Obviously his superiors haven’t got a clue either and haven’t been able to issue him with any explanations of his role. It is just another sign that Vicpol is an agency in free fall with no leadership and little control over its officers.

  4. Bad Samaritan

I often go hiking in Kosciuszko NP and across into Victoria into the Alpine NP. At the end of three weeks hiking I also often drive through Victoria to Albury to visit friends thereabouts….

Ok, it’s a fact that on average the Victorians I meet at random are none-too-bright. That they voted for Dan proves this. That they still support his fascist police also proves this. They know how totally corrupt and nasty VicPol is (see Pell case, Gobbo, Nixon and Overland and Ashton and Neville etc etc, the fake RBTs and speed cameras….plus all this hoax CV stuff) and they know the fish rots first from the head, and still they love him. Then the redshirts corruption or whatever it was called makes them happy.. And so on….

Now, if Dan’s CV ineptitude had not lead to several hundred deaths, plus the house arrest of every normal person in Melbourne, then maybe there could be some kinda explanation of the Danomania which sees him at 165% approval. Maybe.

Any Cat got an idea for why Victorians on average are dumb as dog-turd?

BTW: Yeah i know it’s not possible to have a 165% approval rating, but do Victorians know this?

  5. Derp

Are they robots incapable of discretion or reason?
Does not exercise, especially for the fitness compromised, also involve rest periods?
Who are they to determine that.. or is there a little red book of approved exercise methodology?

No wonder their ADF companion is standing a distance away.
    In shame.

  6. Vagabond

Once the virus has burnt itself out the trashing of Vicpol’s reputation will linger on for many years and will be the worst outcome from this whole sorry mess. I’ve written here before that Andrews and Sutton will come out of this smelling like roses with Orders of Australia etc but the stench of fertilizer around those rose bushes will be a reminder of Vicpol’s behavior for a very long time. The memories of officers taking the knee, the porcine assistant commissioner and their treatment of pregnant women and old ladies will propel them quite rightly into a reputation as Australia’s home grown gestapo.

    Dickless Traceys?

“Dr.” Falsey would have conniption if he knew that UV light from the big thermonuclear device in the sky is utterly lethal to viruses (virii?), and lots of bacteria.

A sun-drenched park bench or rifle range are about the safest places to be. Probably why the “experts” are so down on them.

  9. Ubique

Of course you can exercise while sitting on a park bench. The VicPol cops are too dumb to have heard of isometrics.

And the politicised, partisan Labor-led Police Farce has absolutely swallowed it, hook line and stinker!

  11. Ubique

Please, don’t be unkind. There are plenty of smart Victorians. There are even smart South Australians and Tasmanians. They just all happen to now work productively and live in Western Australia.

  12. the sting

Note how the soldiers turn their back on the police harassing that pregnant woman .

BTW: Yeah i know it’s not possible to have a 165% approval rating, but do Victorians know this?

It seems possible to use unsolicited polling to obtain such inflated results. The US Democratic Party presidential election campaign has thereby pinned its hopes.
Perhaps there’s a bit of what makes Victoria in all of us.

  14. Spurgeon Monkfish III

it’s not possible to have a 165% approval rating, but do Victorians know this?

They definitely wouldn’t if they were “taught” mathematics by Syphilis von Spuddentropp.

  15. Eyrie

I wouldn’t bet that the voters in any other State would not go along with an Andrews style totalitarian dictatorship just as enthusiastically and the coppers behave in the same thuggish manner.

Because so many of them moved here from Queensland.

Maybe Fatty Ashton has grown a beard in retirement in the hope people won’t recognise him.

Luckily we hardly ever see the plod around my way (except when they’re collecting their takeaway coffees) but the other day I saw two divvy vans’ worth of plod assembled to deal with an incident involving just one very sad, small and unintimidating homeless man.

  19. Econocrat

Like the ADF providing overwatch on the interrogation of the pregnant women.

  20. Rabbi Putin

It is a joke, in a city that’s always desperate to make itself look smart and posh and serious to the outside world, we look dumb as dogshit. I hope the luvvies take note and it hurts them enough to change tack.

  21. alan sivkoff

the ADF need to distance themselves as far as possible from Andrew’s storm troopers. In fact, why aren’t they taking them on?

  22. The legal academic, James Allan, just admitted (in the Spectator) that he was ashamed to be an Australian. So am I.

I’m not ashamed to be an Australian, but I am ashamed of our politicians, on all sides, in every state and Federally.

Kids playing basketball in my local park on Monday. Vicpol officers patrolling, but say nothing. Took my 9 and 11 year old grandsons (looking after them whilst essential worker mum is working, if you are wondering) to shoot a few hoops next day, but basketball hoops are chained up, with a sign banning use. My grandsons sincerely expressed to me their thanks for the thoughtfulness of the police in protecting them (or words to that effect!).

  24. Mother Lode

I think Dan Andrews has in mind a way to bounce back from Covid.

    Tourism.

Not forests – lots of places have those. Not splendid heritage architecture – you can see more and better in Europe. Not beaches – that is a QLD thing. Not the arts – they are so hopelessly parochial no one from anywhere else will have the slightest interest. Not the food – the only stuff not found anywhere else is the lame ‘fusion’ stuff which in a Venn diagram would be the hollow ring where the set of ‘foods’ has had had the subset ‘good food’ removed.

    No.

Idiot safaris. People will be able to go to Melbourne and watch the police, watch the press conferences, watch the Karens etc.

  25. Damon

“I’m not ashamed to be an Australian”
Fair enough, but I’m unwilling to travel around the world (was it still possible) apologising for the opinions and actions of dickheads. And I’m ashamed of them.

  26. Zulu Kilo Two Alpha

the ADF need to distance themselves as far as possible from Andrew’s storm troopers. In fact, why aren’t they taking them on?

Be interesting to see resignation figures from the A.D.F. after this fiasco. “I didn’t join up to be a stromtrooper for the Andrews regime!”

  27. Damon

As an epitome of stupidity, for months, the dog parks have been chained shut -to prevent spread of COVID.

  28. Robbo

Those lucky people who are not subject to the moronic rules being imposed on Victorians by the incompetent and mendacious political lunatic Dan Andrews and his mob of black garbed police thugs may well laugh. I would laugh too if I lived outside the ruins of Victoria. But everyone outside of the shit heap that Andrews has created should remember that the rest of Australia is propping him up through the taxes they pay. Andrews should be in jail and he should be accompanied by at least 6 of his disgraceful lying incompetent Ministers. Only stupid people will defend Andrews. Normal people despise him for the damage he has done to businesses and lives.

  29. H B Bear

Considering the usual suspects who suffer an attack of the vapours at the slightest hint of opprobrium from the UN the silence is deafening.

  30. Hay Stockard

Well this will,do,wonders for tourism in future.
I don’t have any need to go to Victoria since I found out there are Sambar north of their border.

  31. Damon

I would advise every pregnant woman in Melbourne to go sit in a park, and if required to move, ask the officer to sign a statement that he or she ordered it. Then, in the case of a complication, sue them.

  32. Many don’t seem to realise that metropolitan Melbourne is where the majority of Andrews’ supporters live, just consider Melbourne’s demographics (really, have a look). Go a reasonable distance outside of the metropolitan boundary and things are very different. There have been so many times in the last 10 years where I’ve been grateful that I moved out of that cesspit.

  33. I feel so sorry for that young policeman, the ADF member is also ashamed.

Surely there must be consequences for the trade union party for this abuse of power.

The older police that turned a blind eye to child abuse have long retired.

  34. HT

And now the Victorian government has claimed Crown Privilege in the Supreme Court to a challenge to the legality of curfew.

    These c^ts know no shame.

  36. Megan

I’m still trying to figure out why, even if you are moronic enough to think the Danimal is doing a great job, you would accept the complete overreach by VicPlod.

I’m a Victorian and I despise what is going on. I don’t know how you can watch these videos and not feel revolted by them. Yet even here on the Cat, where I value the analysis and varying opinions of so many, there were still those who were blaming it all on the victims.

Even more revolting to me than the videos is the fact that you could ever justify police brutally treating anyone but the most hardened, out of control, or desperate criminal in the ways shown in these videos. Let alone pregnant women, old ladies or blokes at the beach.

Just to remind you that two young lads with baseball bats tried to stop James Gargasoulos before he killed anyone. Unlike the police who stood around and did SFA.

  37. Even more revolting to me than the videos is the fact that you could ever justify police brutally treating anyone but the most hardened, out of control, or desperate criminal in the ways shown in these videos. Let alone pregnant women, old ladies or blokes at the beach.

Just look at the photos of those police. How many of them, individually, could take down a hardened criminal? How many, if there were just two, would contemplate taking on a very angry man (without guns drawn).

Pregnant women and old ladies is all that they are able to handle with any confidence, as a group. They can then tell their grand children stories of how they single-handedly took on rebellious activists during the pandemic of 2020. These people will probably be issued with medals for their courage and valour under extreme danger.

I’m in regional Victoria so we’re allowed to take the grandkids to the park now. But a few weeks ago our parks were chained up too. Mrs HT once asked me why I thought the 18V tools I have been collecting in the workshop we’re “so awesome”. Now she understands, and appreciates the portability they provide.

I am a very long time lurker. Cat is the first site I go to every morning. I love the (mostly) intelligent comments and discussion here and have decide it’s time to join in.

Any Cat got an idea for why Victorians on average are dumb as dog-turd?

As a Victorian who lives in Melbourne, I agree that the moron quota is higher than average here, but I don’t know why. It’s bizarre how many Melbournians are not only unable to see how corrupt Labor are, but will even find 100 ways to justify everything that Andrews and his band of halfwits stuff up. Obviously the higher than average ‘dumb as dog turd’ portion of the population correlates well with Vic being the most left wing state. That being said there are many of us that have known that Andrews was a worry right from the start and see him for exactly what he is.

    Steve Kates:

“They’re laughing at us. I don’t find it quite so funny.”

Now Steve, I see the comments at Catallaxy get shrill and maniacally hysterical at times, especially this year, however I really don’t think what San Franciscans think of Australia is important – that is where they camp on the CBD streets (like in Bourke St or Pitt St or Market St, Sydney) in mini Soweto townships because enjoying the richest nation in the world is still not enough to get them off their lazy backsides.

The opinion of Congressional representative Ilhan Abdullahi Omar’s african migrant constituents is similarly unmoving – those are the primitives for whom the Minneapolis CBD footpaths are where one poos, and the city ordinances were amended to allow them to do just that – defecate where they stand, shake their bum a bit and walk on.

What do the Pekingese think – the people who continuously spit where they walk? The Manchester people, who enthusiastically imitate the finest traditions of the Black Olives Matter freedom fighters, tearing down statues and burning the libraries of their generous white fella hosts? Does it really matter what they reckon about Collingwood coppers? You do understand they would regard the statues at the MCG of Ron Barassi and Keith Miller as evil and definitely demolition worthy?

The first link is to some world-wide-whinge-mock-and-amuse-about-everything site for people who are supposed to be diligently performing their clerical work for the insurance company from home.

Correspondent hitherandyon says “Same sort of stuff happens here in the uk” and Nona Yobiznes thunders threateningly “Last year I was thinking about spending a couple years living in Australia. That idea is definitely off the table permanently.” Diplomatically damaging stuff that!

Your second link is to a broadsheet in the city or state or country of Caldron Pool, where the shocked media piece – a dozen short repetitive paragraphs – has attracted 3 comments in the 13 days since it was front page news. One of those is from Bunyip Bill and I’m fairly sure he wouldn’t be from Buenos Aires or Harare – more likely he’s a Centrelinker from Tim Blair’s Werribee. 😁

I’m retired military and I don’t understand what the hell the ADF are even doing there. Seriously, what are they for, muscle? If they were to use “muscle” defending a VicStasi from being righteously beaten to a pulp, the ADF member is at hazard of being charged with assault because the ADF has no legal protections that VicStasi enjoy.

Logistics? How is walking the beat with the VicStasi helping with logistics?

Communications? Nope, they walk behind and say nothing, no radio comms, nothing.

    Public Relations? Your kidding, right?

My bet is their RoE is say nothing, do nothing, and above all do not get into an argument or altercation with a civilian.

-What the hell are the ADF even doing there, anyone???

  43. -What the hell are the ADF even doing there, anyone???

No one other than the state and Federal government knows the rules of engagement. I suspect that they are there merely as a show of force and, maybe, to give the overweight plods a chance to escape in case they get chased by a couple of angry grannies.

Their problem is they don’t have some inane slogan on their visivest. The security guy who told me to move on had “Spread kindness not virus”. Catallaxy should have a competition for the right slogan.

“Eat Shit and Die Andrews” is one slogan that works for me. I have others, less subtle.

  46. Mustapha Bunn

H.T. @ 4.37 pm. My sentiments exactly. In the Melbourne suburb that I live in police numbers have always been 25% lower than the average across the city. I could go anywhere around my district, into Geelong,Melbourne and not see one single police car for weeks on end. Now they are everywhere in the shopping strips etc..Always 3 or 4 and always accompanied by ADF blokes. Why ? It was noticeable that at the two recent “protests” at the Shrine and Queen Victoria Market there were no ADF present just the usual dickhead plods and even the Ninja Turtles who have never been seen previously anywhere that I have noticed.

  47. Squirrel

Maybe they’re just laughing at the fact that the (supposed) land of bronzed Aussies has so many pasty, fat-arse cops waddling around in ill-fitting uniforms.

  48. Bruce

    @HT:

“-What the hell are the ADF even doing there, anyone???”

Being deliberately and systematically degraded and demoralized, for starters. From trained Infantry, etc., to (occasionally) armed social workers, to street-theatre extras in quick order. I think most of them are getting the message.

As also an ex-Digger (RAEME), I have seen this degradation before.

A good mate from my unit put his hand up for a tour of Rwanda under a blue helmet.

Interesting ROE setup. He was there for the massacre at the Kibeho refugee camp. He and his detachment were forced to watch and wait until the shooting and chopping ceased, then they had to walk through the blood and guts, using pace-counters to click off the body count. Nice!

Another night he was part of a vehicle patrol in the city when all the occupants were witness to one “local” demonstrating applied machete technique on another. He was silly enough to ask for a refresher on the Rules Of Engagement. Answer? Unless being attacked PERSONALLY with deadly force, stay out of it.

He came home a different man; bailed from the Army and then the entire country and now lives on the other side of the planet.

UN “peacekeeping” at its finest, then again, some of the stories I heard from those sent to “peace-keep” in Cambodia are at least as bad.

  49. e all ready knew it but now it’s confirmed. Victoria Police have lost all commonsense. Apparently 38 week pregnant women can’t stop for a breather on a park bench.

No no, that women killed 763 nursing home residents by sitting down.

What this shows is how quickly we can slide into a police state. I hope we can get out.

  50. HT

Hey. Rice. We used to call UN Peacekeeping “UN PieceWatching”. I never served on UN Misdion, but my last ten years employment, when Australia was on the SC, gave me deep insights into the organisation. It’s putrid. Why Australia and our allies participate in the stinking, putrid shit-show that is UN is one of life’s great mysteries.

I hear you and fear greatly for the once excellent tradition that was Australian armed forces.

Blithered if that’s a word by gender quotas and God knows what else, aah I cannot speak my thoughts of disgust at the so called leaders.

  53. Rabbi Putin

The ADF in Victoria now seem to represent the Federal branch of the Liberal Party’s tolerance of all manner of humiliations which they pay for sitting at their doorstep:
    -the ABC
    -the tent embassy
    -the art/uni grants
    -the State Government of Victoria.

In Australia we pay for leftists to humiliate us. That’s the name of the whole game and it’s been going on for at least 50 years. I think had Peter Dutton gotten up in the last leadership spill he might have targeted some rollback of this crap but the left even managed to have their own inside-plant Malcolm Turnbull foil that aswell, hence why we ended up with Jellybelly Scomo

  54. HT

Sorry Bruce. My damn iPhone autocorrected you to “Rice”. iPhone spell checker must have been designed by a UN Committee…

This. Axeman is correct. I know so many people who agree with what Chow Mein Fuhrer is doing. They think that the police are only doing what they have to because it’s for everyone’s safety, and those who are dragged out of cars or hectored by roaming gangs of VicPol orifices deserve what they get for not obeying the laws.

I have to bite my tongue every day because these people can’t be reasoned with. If I disagree with the mask mandate then I just don’t care about other people getting sick.

Actually, I don’t much care about other people getting sick. If it’s someone on the other side of the city, why should I?

I care about being an adult who takes responsibility for herself and doesn’t need some tinpot dictator wanting to hold her hand (or else) for her own good. I’m not that weak.
