I’ve just finished watching Mr Jones on Netflix about Gareth Jones, the Welsh journalist, who reported on the Holodomor when almost every other journalist was sucking up to Communism and Stalin. It’s a good film…I can highly recommend it.

    Wealthiest Countries in the World

Wealth is measured in many ways. Some see it purely as the money you have, while others may look at net worth or your overall quality of life. The same goes when measuring the wealth of countries. Some countries, like Indonesia or China, may dominate the world in gross domestic product but have unlivable wages and poor living conditions for most.

To help wade through all the numbers and find the wealthiest countries in the world, we combined three metrics of wealth to see what countries deliver the best overall balance of gross domestic product (GDP), average income and Social Progress Index (SPI). Here’s our methodology.

Keep reading to see what countries landed on our 50 wealthiest countries list.

Hundreds of families ‘face eviction by Ministry of Defence’

Residents in an estate in Pembrokeshire are among those affected, and say the notices have caused them “sleepless nights”.

The MoD said tenants had been given 12 months’ notice to leave.

Far-right activists are attempting to “fuel hate” in areas where asylum seekers are being housed in former army barracks, a council official said.

It said it had a duty to dispose of properties not required for future service personnel. But the owner of the land says the MoD could dispose of 11,000 empty properties instead.

Far-right activists are attempting to “fuel hate” in areas where asylum seekers are being housed in former army barracks, a council official said.

    ‘Accommodation crisis’
The decision was “made rapidly” due to a severe shortage of accommodation created by the coronavirus pandemic, Home Office director Deborah Chittenden told the meeting.

“We needed to make some urgent decisions, as in, we have an emergent crisis in our accommodation system,” she said.

The Home Office is obliged to provide accommodation and support for asylum seekers while their claim is considered.

Are we about to witness the greatest sell-out in British political history?

The above headline is no exaggeration. There are many signs that the British people are being set up for the mother of all sell-outs by the UK Government.

Oven ready deal, anyone? Well, the government blew its own slogan out of the water thanks to the totally unnecessary statement of the Secretary for Northern Ireland, Brandon Lewis, that the Internal Market Bill would break international law – in what was clearly a set-up question and answer.

The purpose? To create, through all the predictable hysterical outrage, the perception that Boris Johnson would do anything to defend the UK’s interests – even, even break international law. Thus, when the climbdown comes, it can be heralded with Hosanna’s and triumphal horns as a hard won deal where the EU backed down and Downing Street won the day.

Well, that’s certainly one explanation for the government’s inexplicable approach.

The other explanation is a remainer plot to spike the government’s guns and stop the Internal Market Bill dead in its tracks. Funny then that the Bill has now cleared the House of Commons and will not appear in the Lords until after the expected cut-off date for EU negotiations

The final explanation is utter incompetence.

Went to the mall yesterday, and as it was a bit picalilli outside, dredged up the ancient JJJ exploding head sweatshirt to wear.

I was surprised to see some admiring looks and even got a comment from someone about the good ole daze. I don’t suppose many of them have survived.

It dates from when JJJ was more into sex and drugs and rock and roll than wokeness, hence the nostalgia. Today, I would prefer silence to listening to it.

I click in to find what may be interesting to read over coffee and find I need my Dictionary of Initials. What is “ACB”? The world sure has embraced laziness in communication – and stupidity now that I come to think of it.

Since it’s Sunday, gardening day – a while back I wrote that my housewarming present cymbidium orchid is finally flowering again after three years. The original flowers were a rusty red, but the new ones are a gorgeous honey yellow-gold, and much bigger. Why is it so, I asked.

After some research, the best explanation seems to be that commercial orchid growers do gene splicing as well as plant splicing – so when you buy a plant from Singapore or wherever simply labelled ‘cymbidium’ its parentage is impossible to establish.

There are many commercially grown ornamental plants whose seed is not guaranteed to produce the same results as the parent plant, and apparently this is a variant on the theme. Luckily, the outcome is a happy one in my case. The flowers are a bit large and blowsy for my taste (I prefer small and delicate) but they are spectacular.

Oh, and sadly the cold snap has not killed any weeds.

Western Australia’s grain growers are on track to produce 14.5 million tonnes this season.

But getting the crop out of the paddock is proving a challenge because strict border restrictions are preventing international and interstate labour from entering the state.

    https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/probability-false-negatives-positives.html

The problem is not quite as simple as the video suggests, in that you need to have an estimation of how many people actually do have the disease before you can make an estimate of the effect of the false positive rate.
However it is certainly not the case as most people assume (including many doctors) that if the false positive rate is 1% and you have 100 positive tests then there are 99 real cases. It will be much less, usually be much less.

As for Jenny Mikakos, I remember her from the TURC. She’s not very bright, but intensely loyal. Was happy to participate in dodgy activities and lie about it.

If you knew this, what did you do about it?

“Cardinal Sir Norman Gilroy was a close friend of my family.”

I bet Cardinal Norm kept that under his mitre, eh Googlery?

    Profile! Profile! Profile!

Married At First Sight ‘star’ Hayley Vernon copped herself a blister for being pinched at the recent Melbin anti-lockdown gig. Earning his or her cash, this tart’s PR flunkie then suggested she associate herself with some new friends (the Hun):

Yeah, I picked out at the time and called in the wife to confirm the sighting.
She’s as crazy as all get out but power to her fake boobs of freedom.

I think he’s about ready to.

So old mate has yet to do anything also?

Many people seem to have voters regret over Dan. Protest after the election? Why vote ALP expecting a different result?

Oh, and cheers to Spurge’s posting of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ last night.

I’ve posted it myself, the longer version. It is magic.

I usually don’t like female high voices (dislike opera) but Donna is ethereal.

I see on a quick search that the version I posted has disappeared. Youtube is gutting music videos. As I mentioned, the late Max Merrit’s ‘I Put a Spell on You’ is gone.

    Fucking vandals.

According to the brits, the Covid test has a false positive rate of .8% or .008.

On Friday, Victoria tested 12460 people and found 13 positive. Although I know it is not correct, I’m going to treat this as though the test was perfect, and say that the prior probability of having Covid in vic is 13/12460=.00104.

Then, by Bayes’ theorem, the probability of actually having Covid with a positive test result is
    .00104*.992/(.00104*.992)+(0.008*0.99806)

    Which equals 0.11.

Yesterday, they found 11 positives or 11x.11 =1.2 real cases.

Mick Gold Coast QLD – ACB is Amy Coney Barrett. Much of this thread is about her including being referred to as ACB many times. You need to practice the initials more – have a guess who MGCQ would be. Reckon I’ll be buying my next car on the GC – XDDFOHT (ex drug dealer fallen on hard times) or FSETPBBAP (formerly self employed tax payer bankrupted by Anaesthesia Parasite). It’s easy when you know how.

    I am rehearsing.

Matey matey maaaate of mine, staunch in tough situations, is about to find himself in another.

Shortly I will attend one of my local venues to watch the UFC along with several hundred other people. Not because I’m especially fond of UFC as a) I’m a purist, and b) it encourages every local shitrat to go the cheap shot followed by ground and pound, but because my dear friend is a lifelong Broncos man.

And I mean Broncos man. Breaking TVs when they lose Broncos man. Veteran of the Caxton Hotel and pics on his walls of him with various Broncos greats Broncos man.

And I’m going to white-hot roast this bloke for several hours about their first ever wooden spoon, and all the nonsense they got up to this year while doing it. And I will gleefully re-enact Darius Boyd’s gender reveal on-field at season’s end as one final cup of stinking, reheated diarrhoea delicately poured over the bucket of goat vomit that was their 2020 season.

He knows this. I know he knows this.

As Mr Case would say, the quickening is upon us. I wait. For now.
