    Very nice and as I write this of course I recognize that it is past sunset here in Adelaide on the night of Kol Nidre. It is something to hear it sung by a talented cantor/ hazan in the synagogue.

    My favorite version from a purely musical perspective though is the cello version arranged by Max Bruch and played here by Teodora Miteva. (even more soulful I think than Jacqueline Du Pre’s version and that is really saying something). The cello fairly weeps.

    It was, remarkably, a far closer-run thing than any side lets on.

    Particularly given that, after having copped such a (superbly planned and initially executed) beating by the Syrian Army and Air Force on the Golan Heights, Israeli armour was still able to regroup and push a counter-offensive deep into Syrian territory.

    I don’t know how close they got to Damascus, but the suing for peace was pretty desparate.

    About the only side that really gained any ground was Egypt, and all they git for their efforts was some more Sinai sand, and extra UN interference…

    A damn good read on the subject is Avigdor Kahalani’s The Heights of Courage. He was one of the IDF’s Armoured Regiment commanders in charge of the defence of the Golan Heights at the time. Their Centurions were actually technically inferior to the T-62s sent up against them, but superior gunnery, adaptive tactics and sheer bloody-mindedness allowed the IDF to prevail.

    Neil Diamond was a relatively unknown songwriter when he wrote I’m a Believer with which The Monkees had a big hit in 1966. It went on to be the biggest selling song in 1967. By 1969 he was enjoying success as both writer and performer.
