I’m not down playing service in Vietnam (well, maybe yours, a little bit). Every conflict and operational technique requires a unique approach. Bad guys evolve, and, hence, so must we.
Every war is different, and generally speaking the last war was worse than the present one. The Anzacs did not want the WW2 Diggers to join the RSL, because “they weren’t in the trenches”. The WW2 blokes denigrated the Korean and Vietnam vets. The SVN war blokes denigrated the Timor, Libya and Afghan Vets.

I was flown up to Darwin to give a talk to the 5RAR blokes before they deployed to Iraq. About 6 of us I think.
The reason being that I had stood at Binh Ba and that was the last time the Army fought in an urban environment. I gave a bit of a talk about my experience but the blokes weren’t responding, then I told them that they were “the new spear”. The way they fought ,the training they had,and the technology they deployed was so far in front of what I had used that it seemed like a completely different Army.
I then said that I knew they would do us proud because they were Diggers.
That night we had a Regimental “Do”. I wore a Tux.
Afterwards we had drinks and a bullshit session and quite a lot of the Senior NCOs and Officers thanked me for what I had said.
Tip for old Diggers, do not try to keep pace with young Diggers, especially if they are buying.

    Johno,
I’ll let you in on a secret. I grew up with the legend of Binh Ba and ‘Blake the Butcher’. It was used as a demonstration of effective Infantry/Armour cooperation, amongst other things.

For anyone who doesn’t actually understand the significance of the Battle of Binh Ba, the Royal Australian Regiment was awarded a Battle Honour for it, which takes pride of place on the Regimental Colours…along side such battles as Kapyong, Maryang-san, Long Tan and Coral-Balmoral.

    A truly historical event.

  6. Johno

Maybe this is why I despise the bin chicken, I have been in the company of young men, middle aged men and old men who all served with honour. I would not drink with this clown.

  7. Arky

I would not drink with this clown.

Hayne and De Belin might be pigs, but there was no forced sexual assault.

My disappointment in Hayne is not in the bloke himself. It’s directed at those folks who tried to turn him into a Christian poster boy a few years ago.

Hayne isn’t and never was a Tim Tebow but the seductive pull of celebrity is irresistible to some otherwise good people.

I’ll let you in on a secret. I grew up with the legend of Binh Ba and ‘Blake the Butcher’. It was used as a demonstration of effective Infantry/Armour cooperation, amongst other things.

Murray Blake was the best Coy CMDR I had in SVN.Hard Bastard, but it was war, brutal and unforgiving.
Jimmy Cairns said it was a massacre of civilians, a few died, but not at our hands. On the second day I was out on the right flank and a ton of shit was going down.We had cleared a bit of area but every now and then something sounded “off”. I was an M60 Gun and I advanced my position, peeked around a corner and saw a couple of NVA with a group SVN civilians, a bitch would shoot them in the head with a pistol, she wore civilian clothes, then the NVA would strip the bodies, don the clothes and fuck off. I had great delight in putting a well directed 5 round group in her chest. Need more than a couple of Dispirin and a Wonderbra for that shit.
Come on Sniffy tell us a story.

    Way to go, ACB!

WASHINGTON—A 5-4 Supreme Court blocked New York from imposing strict limits on attending religious services to combat Covid-19. New Justice Amy Coney Barrett cast the pivotal vote to depart from past cases, which deferred to state authorities on public-health measures against the coronavirus.

Cuisine report; put it by mistake on another thread:

The asparagus wrapped in prosciutto was good enough but I won’t take another American recipe from the internet. I did a test run of five, and the timing was wrong; they got a bit burned, not too bad, but I don’t think I much go for cooked prosciutto. I left those for Hairy for lunch. Add a boiled egg, I advised as I left. The other fifteen were reasonable, better cold too, and there were none left after the lunch so I guess that’s a pass. Fun lunch anyway, by the pool, but the heat forced a retreat indoors to the aircon to eat.

Tomorrow I will make some more just for us, as I have plenty of makings left. I will quickly par-boil the asparagus so that it is still crisp, but done, oil it, wrap it in the Prosciutto just as it is, and we shall eat well. Will consider adding crushed garlic and/or chopped capers.

Much better, I think. More flavoursome. No cooking needed to go wrong.
Someone else bought watermelon cubes with a toothpick holding a half slice of cucumber and some sheeps’ milk cheese, drizzled with a balsamic. I might pinch that recipe. Useful for entertaining.

  14. Johno

    Mater,
We fought 33 Regiment at Binh Ba, but we also fought them across Long Binh and Long Kanh province previously they then disappeared and reappeared in the Long Green. We were exhausted and depleted as a result, we went back to the Dat . We were the Ready Reaction Coy at the time. The strength of a Coy at that time was supposed to be 134. When we mustered to Binh Ba we were all ranks 68.

  15. Johno

This all happened 50 years ago, or more , and the only reason I say this is because, well ,the idiot of Toowoomba can’t be allowed to gibber shit without a reality wake-up.

    Johno,
One day we’ll catch up for a drink (sans Vodka).

  17. calli

When you pull the asparagus from the hot water, plunge it into a bowl filled with ice cubes, water and a bit of lemon juice, Lizzie. Then wrap it with the proscuitto, twirled down the stem.

All you need is a dressing of good olive oil, cracked pepper and maybe a squeeze of lemon.

    Bellissimo!

For the cricket fans. Just received a message from a Kiwi mate :

“not sure if this will make the news in Oz but it’s big news here. The team has been playing up since they arrived and can’t believe the tour hasn’t been canceled and the team sent home.

Cricket: Six Pakistan players test positive for Covid-19, breach rules while in managed isolation in Christchurch.

  21. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Our response invites a one- two punch: a covid feint to the guts and then a knockout to the head from influenza or bird flu.

Mass vaccination will probably move in to stop anything getting too serious there Arky. We’ll just lose a platoon or two of young revelers before that happens and the gummint will get serious; influenza is the sleeping biggie still and you are right, we are lessening our herd immunity to it amongst the young by keeping it at bay a year or two with Covid measures.

  22. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Thanks, Calli. That recipe is what reason suggests. Why ruin a $100 a kilo Prosciutto with putting it in the oven to go hard while the asparagus cooks? I won’t be doing that again.

  23. This all happened 50 years ago, or more , and the only reason I say this is because, well ,the idiot of Toowoomba can’t be allowed to gibber shit without a reality wake-up.

And I wouldn’t drink with any psychopath who brags about killing women, in war or peace.

Wangs hot take on killing an enemy combatant who was witnessed killing a civilian is to do nothing.

And claim it has the moral high ground by not acting while witnessing the commission of a war crime.

We are witnessing the complete moral disintegration started 50+ years ago when it dogged on its mates.

No wonder they stuck it where it could do the least damage to kids brains.

20 weeks is much tougher than first trimester.

I have a friend who found a loss at late teens very difficult, the baby had severe disabilities so was never going to be viable, but she had years of pain about losing it. Another mother had a perfectly healthy boy that strangled himself with the cord, that would be dreadfully hard, twenty weeks gestation there has to be a funeral in Victoria.

  33. Dot

Interesting conundrum, Johno. My Lai is condemned, and rightly so, as a war crime, and an atrocity, but I’ve never heard any such condemnation of the murder of several thousand South Vietnamese civilians after the capture of Hue, by the North Vietnamse Army in 1968.

  37. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

But most women don’t “announce” – let alone via social media – that they’ve had a miscarriage.
    Right?

Most sensible women wait until they are past week twelve to make any announcement at all, because the first twelve weeks are where miscarriage is most likely. News of miscarriage is usually shared sadly with only close family unless the pregnancy is well along and friends have been giving their congratulations.

It is a difficult thing to cope with at a later stage, as is a stillbirth, but most women see it as a personal thing and perhaps seek support if they need it. Support groups for miscarriage and stillbirth have existed for many years, so Markel is not advocating anything new or particularly lacking in funding and social recognition. IMHO, Meaghan Markel is attention seeking, looking for something to wail and write about. I am sad she lost her baby but she has opportunities to recover well.

And yes, what on earth does Harry do to occupy himself in his current environment when he seemed so happy with his army role and connections in his pre-Meaghan one? All she has done is pull him into an introspective pit with her. It is not good for either of them.

My daughter lost her IVF twins at 13 weeks and was heartbroken, sobbing to Hairy. I was deeply upset for her too, which meant I didn’t manage the condolences very well. We are often prickly with each other anyway. I don’t think I am the mother she thought she should have, nor my relatives and her half-siblings, who admittedly are all a disparate lot. I am sure she loves me but it is not always easy. She is more attuned to Hairy’s ‘nice’ side of the family and the family she has married into. Very much wanted babies are always missed and never forgotten, but losing babies at this developmental stage is easier to accept than when a fully formed child is dead within you or on exit. She has since had two other beautiful children and her third little baby is in her arms right now and I will be in Queensland after December 10th to have him in my arms soon too. Hairy is trying to shift medical appointments to make it all happen as soon as possible.

  82. Johno

A lot of the things I post here I have not talked about for fifty years. But there seems to be a strange alternate universe kind of thing about this boy. What is it? It was conscripted, for one reason or another, it squibbed the offer of not serving in SVN, it went, made a nuisance of itself and was returned to base, it then went to the Q store and then it bursts onto the scene abusing everyone and demanding respect for service.

Just shut up and pissoff boy.you are nothing.

And I am serious. I think Numbers is so obsessed with his limited time in his life in Vietnam in the 1970’s that it is totally overwhelming his life even today. It is as if every single post I put up here detailed my time in Sri Lanka in the 70’s, how terrible living under a socialist economy was, how badly off the people were, how much I suffered emotionally from being a young girl with my first baby in such hideous conditions with typhoid and cholera rampant.

Think about if I went on obsessively, Every Single Day, about just that one aspect of my life and experience and made few other comments on matters to do with the order of the day that were not in some way drawn back to 1973 in Sri Lanka. Because that, Numbers, is exactly what you are like.

You don’t need to be here. Get a life. Get it somewhere else. Forget Vietnam. It’s over.

I have the greatest respect for our Cat returned servicemen and thank them for the sacrifices they endured for Australia and for the rest of us.

Some of them kept their war service quiet, until number’s incessant whinging prompted them to reply, exposing his cowardice and his lies.

I understand that Sinc grants some (much) leeway to numbers on the strength of his service, but IMO this is at the expense of the reputations of Cat veterans who served with pride and dignity. I know which men I would choose in a political, security or moral crisis.

You should be banned for that.
The only thing I demand respect for is the truth.

I’m waiting for an apology for your many lies about me, my actions in Vietnam, and what you claim were my motives. To create a fiction of that nature is a very strange and outlandish behaviour, and a symptom of major and ongoing issues.

  131. Tel

I’ve never heard any such condemnation of the murder of several thousand South Vietnamese civilians after the capture of Hue, by the North Vietnamese Army in 1968.

R.J.Rummel took the trouble to document it, and he universally condemned what he called “democide” of which this is one example amongst many.

Finally, we can turn to democide. That for North Vietnam involved in the early years a terror devoted to eliminating non-communist nationalists, anti-communists, and those who were pro-French (lines 266 to 275). Once the war against the French was almost over Hanoi turned to destroying and rebuilding the rural economic and power structure. This period, from 1953 to 1956, is very significant and the estimates are very confused. I have accordingly outlined in the table all the estimates associated with it so that the mode of calculation and associated subtotals for this period can be clearly distinguished.

Among the first campaigns was that to “reduce rent,” which really involved ridding the countryside of rich, powerful, and bourgeois peasants. (line 279). There is only one estimate of the associated democide, and for it the source (Hoang Van Chi, a Vietnamese nationalist with first hand experience) cites Professor Gerard Tongas who was in Hanoi during these years (he left in 1959), and which he claims to be accurate.3 I will therefore rely on this estimate in the subsequent calculations.

Once this campaign was completed and the countryside softened up, “land reform” proper took place (this was the taking of land from those who owned more than a defined amount and giving it to landless peasants– a preliminary to full nationalization of the land). There are major problems in estimating those who were killed or died in the campaign. The estimates cover different periods; and some cover strictly the “land reform” campaign while others appear to mix up the “rent reduction” campaign with the “land reform” or “political struggle” campaigns, with on going repression and retaliation (lines 312 to 318), or with democide associated with the suppression of rebellions (lines 322 to 325). I try to handle this by dividing “land reform” estimates in terms of their ostensive inclusiveness. Thus I first present estimates of “executions” (lines 282 to 288); then those executed and otherwise “killed” (lines 292 to 298); and then those who also otherwise died (i.e., “dead”–lines 302 to 308), such as those tagged as wealthy peasants who were deprived of their land, officially ostracized and thus denied food and shelter. Consequently, in consolidating the “land reform” dead (line 309), I made sure that the figures subsumed the consolidated killed estimates (line 299), that this in turn subsumed the consolidated execution estimates (line 289), and that this subsumed the rent reduction killed (line 279). In determining the final democide “land reform” total, I only added the final “land reform” dead (line 309) to those killed in political struggle, etc. (line 319), and the suppression of uprisings (line 326). The probable democide for this four year period then totals 283,000 North Vietnamese (line 329).

In a way I find it sadder when written in such a clear and clinical fashion. Rummel was one of the good guys … RIP 2014 … please keep reminding people.

‘When Emm Jones saw a video of Jackson Williams dragging an innocent nurse into an alleyway, pinning her to the ground, rolling on top of her and covering her mouth as she screamed, she thought of her own three daughters. “This offender is walking among us still,” she said.

‘Williams was sentenced last week to a two-and-a-half year community correction order after being convicted of assault but found not guilty of intent to commit a sexual offence by the County Court of Victoria. He spent 42 days in jail before his trial.

‘She believes the result was “grossly inadequate” and was spurred to start a petition that now has almost 100,000 signatures.

‘On Thursday morning, she met with Victorian Attorney-General Jill Hennessy and shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue. The nurse and aged care worker has also teamed up with Justice Party MP Stuart Grimley in a push to introduce new legislation for “grab and drag” offences.’

They don’t need ‘grab and drag’ offences. Backed by the tape but either misinterpreted or ignored by the beak, this (in Vicco at least) is called Assault with Intent to Rope. It’s designed to be proven by the crook’s overt acts [which I would suggest it is here in spades] and it’s also designed for exactly this circumstance.

A shit state of affairs, to say the least.

I couldn’t care less about the personal abuse. A more important issue is the maintenance of a culture that demeans the service of Vietnam veterans in particular, and returned servicemen in general by the specific cohort of a gilded generation who define “service” as what you get at MacDonalds.

Just to inform you that this place is officially now termed a Zoo. Hairy has declared it to be such because of the new animal content we currently are sustaining on the back terrace. Feed them and they will come, says Hairy in the manner of a man pointing to a solution. We put out birdseed, bread pellets and Kangaroo meat for the Currawong fledglings, and they are thriving. But we have at least thirty Lorrikeets who screech and demand and play around so amusingly disgracefully that we tolerate them, and add more seed. We were just watching TV and all is at peace with the world, Attapuss on my lap snoozing, when Kerashhh, something happening out there on the back terrace. Attapuss is at the door like a shot and we all both out to see what happened, followed by the cat. The china seed dish has crashed into bits onto the tiles from the wide balcony railings, and a rather large and anxious looking possum, bigger than Attapuss, looks at us and starts to have a nervous standoff with Attapuss, who gauging the side of the intruder is actually rather busy retreating. Possum then jumps to the branch of the Jacaranda where the birdie’s nest is and where the youngest fledgling still likes to occasionally slot himself back in and relive good times. It strikes me that maybe our little mother bird has had to bravely resist a possum attack during the long nights of rearing her offspring. Do possums eat meat, especially baby birds? I wonder aloud, and muse again that it might explain the amount of Kangaroo meat that we are now getting through thrice daily. The fledglings certainly get a lot, as we see them at it, but as for the stuff that is left for brekkie, I look at the size of this young possum and wonder. I think they’re vegetarian, murmurs Hairy, and given the state of my Begonias it would not surprise, but maybe Bruce or Gab know.

I think I might have to temporarily fix some sort feeding platform on to the terrace railings to improve the restaurant environment. I wonder if lots of Blu Tac and an old tin tray would do it. But if it has to hold a six kilo possum I guess that rules out anything so simple. Looks like a job for a metal screw or two.

Unsurprisingly it was the ABC who cranked up the outrage bus against 5RAR regarding civilian casualties during the Battle of Binh Ba.
The CO 5RAR Colin ‘Genghis’ Kahn had this to say on the subject
“We had been criticised subsequently because the ABC [Australian Broadcasting Corporation] – I appeared on television a number of times, with Jane Singleton and others and Richard Carleton, who was very good, who said, “You’ve been accused of – civilians were killed in the battle of Binh Ba,” and I said, “There is no war in history which has been fought in a built-up area where civilians have been occupying, where civilians hadn’t been killed.”
I said, “Sadly, I believe there probably were civilians killed in the Battle of Binh Ba.” But the point is, my soldiers deliberately exposed themselves as they were getting near houses, to make sure there were no civilians involved”
In these interesting ‘Brereton’ times he added some additional perspective. He opined that
“My brother was a bomber pilot in England. I used to get fascinating stories back from him, and we refer to him a lot now when people talk to me about my activities in Vietnam. They talk about some of the so-called massacres and killings of civilians that took place in Vietnam. I say if you want to talk to anyone in my family, talk to my brother who flew thousand bomber raids over Hamburg and Berlin and Cologne…”
There are very few left who had the honour of commanding a Battalion of the RAR in Vietnam. I can report that ‘Genghis’ is still travelling well.
Ron Grey – CO 7RAR February 1970 – March 1971 is still about. Holed up in a nursing home in Victoria these days, but I can confirm that he still reaches into his own pocket to support worthy Vietnam Veteran causes.
    Absolutely magnificent men.

I’d be praying for some software that works.

Whenever I make a change on this new computer of mine it flips back to insert a line or a word somewhere that I haven’t asked it to go to. You may have noticed a few strange constructions slipping through and destroying me grammatical reputation. I blame AI. Predictive text also does its worst.

AI – there’s a long way to go yet. We don’t need more whiz-bang smartness, we need to tone things down a bit to the level of common humanity. Hairy is always cursing what he calls Millennial Programmers who want him to think as sloppily as they do because it’s the vibe or something.

    The Scotsman:

‘The creators of the Ouroboros Steak envision the DIY steak kit allowing users to collect cells from their own cheek using a cotton swab and depositing them onto pre-grown scaffolds made from mushroom mycelium.

‘They are then stored in a warm environment for three months and fed human serum until the steak is fully grown. Industrial designer on the project, Grace Knight, argues that using human blood is cheaper and more sustainable than FBS.

‘She also highlights that this project is “technically not” cannibalism.

‘She adds,“People think that eating oneself is cannibalism, which technically this is not. Our design is scientifically and economically feasible but also ironic in many ways.

‘“We are not promoting ‘eating ourselves’ as a realistic solution that will fix humans’ protein needs. We rather ask a question: what would be the sacrifices we need to make to be able to keep consuming meat at the pace that we are? In the future, who will be able to afford animal meat and who may have no other option than culturing meat from themselves?”‘

Imagine if OZ would use just the currently available water for agri. production instead of letting it wet the oceans?

    Mark A,

I wouldn’t really have a problem eating recycled people. That is, people who’ve been fed to the pigs, who in turn become wonderful pork. The subject matter expert is, of course, Brick Top from Snatch:

‘You’re always gonna have problems lifting a body in one piece. Apparently the best thing to do is cut up a corpse into six pieces and pile it all together. And when you got your six pieces, you gotta get rid of them, because it’s no good leaving it in the deep freeze for your mum to discover, now is it?

‘Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies’ digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don’t want to go sievin’ through pig shit, now do you?

‘They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, “as greedy as a pig”.’

Six pieces, and sixteen pigs. Words to live by.

  215. bespoke

Before I go , I don’t it’s entirely a morality issue eating human meat. What if supply runs short for some reason? People will have been conditioned that it’s OK.

  216. Ed Case

Comparison of Beef vs Grain: Beef fertilise the pastures, employ a lot of people in the production and distribution, massive amount of Nutrition per pound. Grain employs virtually nobody in production, uses massive amounts of water, destroys soil fertility, very low nutrients per pound, Pellagra, Crohn’s Disease, Obesity, Arthritis, massive amounts of Human Waste that have to be carried away by water and treated
versus tiny amount of waste from Meat, factor all this in and it turns out Grain Production should be severely curtailed for the good of the Planet.
