The climate change scam

This is how this post begins which is titled, The Climate Scam: What We Are Up Against.

What I call the “climate scam” is the proposition that human use of fossil fuels will shortly bring about a catastrophic increase in atmospheric temperatures, and that this crisis can easily be averted by governments in a few rich countries, with about 10% of the world’s population, imposing crippling coercive restrictions and cost increases on fossil fuel use while also massively subsidizing alternative “renewable” energy sources.

I have long thought that this scam could not go on too much longer. The reasons I have thought that are many, the least important of them being that in the several decades since the warnings of catastrophic warming were first issued, atmospheric temperatures have increased much less than predicted. But here are two other reasons for my view that are more important:

  1. Restrictions on rich-country carbon emission cannot possibly have any meaningful effect on world climate, because rich-country emissions are a minority and a rapidly-shrinking portion of total world emissions, while developing countries, with about 90% of world population, are rapidly increasing their emissions from a low base. The developing countries will never agree to limit their ongoing emissions increases, particularly while many of their people still lack basic access to electricity, automobiles, air conditioning, and so forth; and

  2. In rich countries, ordinary and working-class people will surely put up an insurmountable roadblock to restrictions on fossil fuels as soon as they figure out that many of their jobs are threatened and their costs of electricity and gasoline are planned to increase by factors of 2 or 5 or 10 in the effort to achieve a (theoretical) meaningless reduction of predicted world temperatures of a few tenths of a degree 50 or 100 years from now.

I still believe that eventually this scam will fall apart, and for the reasons given (among other reasons). After all, the information to support my points (1) and (2) is readily available, not only from many posts on this blog, but many other sources as well, official and otherwise. There is a network of climate-skeptic news sources and bloggers, of which I am one, constantly putting this information out for the public to see. All of these sources, as far as I am aware, operate on a shoestring; but they cannot be silenced, and the skeptic community is remarkably robust and resilient. We aren’t going away.

But then, you have to consider what we are up against.

If you want to know what we are up against, you should go to the link, although this brings you close to the answer:

But go to the link anyway even if it might depress you.

…and then choosing to vote for the other guy

In fairness for many in the US the choice of which candidate their vote goes to – or if it even gets counted – is out of their control.

  2. nb

Chris M, #3667114 says: ‘In fairness for many in the US the choice of which candidate their vote goes to – or if it even gets counted – is out of their control.’
At least this election confirms there is an afterlife.

Religious cults are fundamentally irrational and can last much longer than you would imagine.

  4. Daily llama

My friends get very angry when I pass wind. But I argue it’s an unsubsidised renewable resource.

  5. Karabar

The reason hat this nonsense has lasted as long as it has is that even the skeptics talk about “reducing emissions” as though it was even remotely related.
There is simply no logical reason to think that carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is related to the weather, much less related to “anthropogenic” behaviour.
That is the very root of the lie that has been repeated over and over to the point that even Bolt or Rowan Dean satirise goofy green schemes because they can’t possibly “reduce emissions”.
In the beginning, Maurice Strong attributed “global cooling” to CO2, and the transition to blame for imaginary “global warming” was made seamlessly.

  6. Ubique

Perth has already set a new record for the wettest November since records began in 1876, at four times the average. Daily maxima are a full three degrees below the average for November. BoM naturally is silent. Global cooling has set in, on account of folks overdoing Earth Hour.

  7. Bruce of Newcastle

    Recycling is for peasants.

1.35 Million Tonnes of “Hazardous Material”, Germany Admits No Plan To Recycle Used Wind Turbine Blades (21 Nov)

Meanwhile here I’ve been seeing the recycling bin nazis going around more often of an early morning lately. There’re two, sometimes three of them in a white van with resplendent do the right thing style propaganda all over it. They come around and look in everyone’s bin to check for unholy stuff, whereupon they then stick a big orange label on so that the truck guy doesn’t pick up. Gaia must have properly holy garbage.

  8. a happy little debunker

The people pushing the hoax and controlling the narrative are not directly dependent on earning their monies from productive activity – rather they earn their keep by extorting taxes from those that do.

Until the working classes are broken and no more can be taken will these numpties even realize their beliefs are misplaced.

Just as these same people who dictate our behavior in relation to Covid have not lost a paycheck as a result of their decisions.

  9. Bruce

    It is not “stupidity”.

It is pure, unadulterated criminal MALICE, tarted up to look like “concern”.

As my brother noted decades ago:

“The most dangerous organism on the planet is a “concerned citizen”.

    H. L Mencken also picked up on this theme:

    1. “The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.”

    2. “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

  10. exsteelworker

Yeah, lets get rid of one mineral ( coal) for reliable 24/7 power generation, and replace it with dozens of rare earth minerals that still need to be dug out of the ground, processed ( some use arsenic, mercury, sulphuric acid to process, nice) smelt it in a blast furnace and manufacture 100s of 1000s of panels and turbines. Then ship them across the oceans, truck them to a clear field area, no one cares about trees when climate change power needs land. Then use 1000s of tons of concrete to set them in place, covering vast areas of land. Whats not to love about renewables, their so environmentally friendly lol……so tell me…What is so environmentally friendly about renewables?

I think democrims take bribes and cheat and lie ,I could be wrong could I ?

  12. Nighthawk the Elder

I’m not too sure about his second point that ordinary and working class will put up the road blocks. I think they are a combination of lazy and stupid.

Politically, the major parties and some of the fringe ones have bought into this climate scam. Most voters are lazy and will stick to either of the majors and not seek out the alternative parties who do raise these issues. Most voters are also economically illiterate and their economic knowledge is limited to middle class welfare and Medi-scare and will vote accordingly. They cannot make the leap to other cost of living impacts that the climate scam policies have on their lives. Remember, only the dirty polluders were ever going to pay the carbon tax and many of the great unwashed bought into it.

  13. Nob

The people you need to convince will never read or watch anything called “Climate Scam”.

  14. EllenG

More US citizens dead than all war deaths of US military since 1914.

  15. Daily llama

All good comments. Nob is right. Herbert Spencer said
“ “There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance–that principle is contempt prior to investigation.”
We really are wasting our time. Because don’t need to look at any evidence, they just “know”.whats that term- ‘confirmation bias’. Anything that doesn’t fit, doesn’t matter. Try explaining to a pinko that coal usage can’t just vanish overnight. And who are we to say to a billion people in India (for eg), “no, you can’t have electricity”. Yes, coal is a dirty fuel. But there are different types of coal, and Aust east coast coal is some of the cleanest on earth. If we did pull the plug overnight, our clients would buy far dirtier coal from elsewhere, like Brazil. And it doesn’t stop there. Ask them- if climate change is an existential threat, why get in your car? Use detergents, fly in aircraft, use plastics, have a metal or wooden framed house, use cement, eat animals. But it’s ok, they just “know” if we give coal the arse, nirvana will result. And if we’re not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?

  16. The reasons I have thought that are many, the least important of them being that in the several decades since the warnings of catastrophic warming were first issued, atmospheric temperatures have increased much less than predicted.

That’s what the scamsters tell us, yet there is no credible evidence that it is so.
You can’t take the temperature of the air 2m above ground in Sydney, then 3 hours later take the tmp of the air 2m above Perth, average the two, call it the AM minimum and have a meaningful data point.
The data were taken at two different times. They can’t be averaged together.

Furthermore, you can’t take air temp readings in relatively few places 2m above ground over 30% of the planets surface, then average those with WATER TEMP READINGS in comparatively even fewer places over 70% of the planets surface and average those together. The result is meaningless.

Unless there has been changes to the radiation output of the sun, or changes to atmospheric pressure, the simple hypothesis should be that the average temp of the planet (whatever that means) hasn’t changed at all during meaningful lifetimes.

This is and has been a scam of the highest order. Almost all the institutions have been captured, almost all sceptics have been effectively silenced and the scam goes on.
It’s now too big to fail. It will never go away. They control (and manipulate) the data.
Even damning documents like the Climategate papers didn’t slow down the scamsters. This is a done deal and future generations will pay for it.

Now they have virus catastrophies. Every few years a new Corona Virus can be released and the Wests economy destroyed. That’s the whole point of these scams.

  17. Judge Dredd

The climate change scam, the overpopulation scam, the global cooling scam, the acid rain scam, the ozone hole scam, the peak oil scam, the COVID19 scam.

  18. Slim Cognito

All of this is possible because the general populace have outsourced their critical thinking to the main stream media. I see it every time I have a conversation with people. They just repeat the talking points they have been told by ABC et al without any critical thought as to whether it is even true. If they don’t question it, they certainly won’t dig any deeper to find out more. If you propose any possible alternative, you risk being branded as a “conspiracy theorist”.

Western society is in deep trouble as a result.

  19. DD

And so we return to the ABC.

Lets play a game. What will happen when Trump wins this presidential election?

Media around the world will be exposed as shills, in the USA many will be imprisoned.
The same with politicians bought and paid for by China and/or the NWO.

Without the socialist propaganda of the ABC and most (97%) of media none of these scams can survive.

This will be our only opportunity to put the ABC back into Ita’s box. (Think Pandora.)
    The question remains………….how?

Correct. Instead of calling out bullshit loudly and continually the bolta approach has prevailed; which is: even if Australia closed down it would do nothing; which is predicated on alarmism being real. Like all namby pamby conservatives bolta is a cuck and doesn’t attack and he and his ilk become the problem.

If they were real about this climate change they would support nuclear, but they don’t, all they support is destruction of the west’s cheap energy, aiming towards unreliable non-base load alternatives. It’s pretty clear this is just socialist driven anti-capitalistic nonsense. The science has been subverted by politics.

  26. Chris M

    Recycling is for peasants.

“Germany began installing wind turbines in earnest some 20 years ago. Now that their lifetime has been exceeded, many are being ripped down. But there’s a big problem about what to do with the leftover carbon and glass-fibre reinforced blades.” More here.

Carbon fibre is a hazardous material in dust form (when cut) and particularly when burnt it releases extremely fine sharp particles like asbestos dust. For example a carbon fibre car that is burning cannot be approached without full oxygen fed breathing apparatus.

  27. RobK

The technocrats believe they have the game sewn up. They are close to falling flat on their faces but they won’t relent until they’ve wrecked the joint.

  28. Roger

It’s pretty clear this is just socialist driven anti-capitalistic nonsense.

Subscribed to by the Liiberal Party at federal and state levels.

  29. Bear Necessities

I call climate change “The War on Carbon”. Like other wars such as “War on Drugs”, “War on Poverty” and other “noble” causes it gathers over time a bureaucratic following whose existence is dependent on the war continuing. The cost benefit analysis of such interventions are highly negative and creates wealth for a few by taxing the many.

Only with the “War on Drugs” after 50 years or so are we seeing countries and states starting to want to decriminalise/legalise some drugs such as Marijuana. I’m pretty sure other drugs will start to be decriminalised over the next decade or so.

The CC industry has only being going 10 to 20 years in earnest. I think it may have a bit more time to run.

  30. Steve, as a professional registered chemical engineer I know that AGW or now called Climate Change is a scam first put up by persons who had a) no qualification or understanding of the engineering subjects Thermodynamics and Heat & Mass Transfer, and b) a political agenda. Look at this https://cementafriend.wordpress.com/2011/10/ to note the misinformation about methane CH4.
I hope others take note of your post.

  31. Ubique, monthly rainfall has a distribution close to a Poisson Distribution where the standard deviation is equal (or close to equal) the average. The rainfall can not go below zero. Record monthly rainfall over 125 years of measurement is more like 5 to 6 times average eg the record rainfall in the month of Feb 1893 of 1819mm is 6.9 times the average of the month which is 260.5 mm in my area of SE Qld.

  32. Always useful to remember this:

    Rubbery Figures
    Cook et al analyzed
11944 abstracts that were published and peer reviewed.
    https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/8/2/024024

    Positions taken on AGW:
    Endorse AGW 32.6% (3896) 97.1
    No AGW position 66.4% (7930)
    Reject AGW 0.7% (78)
    Uncertain on AGW 0.3% (40)
    Total no. abstracts checked 11944.

67.3% of scientists’ abstracts reviewed showed no endorsement of Anthropic Global Warming.

Yet of the 32.6% that endorse AGW, only 97.1 % actually do. (!?!) How’zat for logic….”Not out,” says the umpire, “the hockey stick is still in play.”

Nevertheless, there is money to be made in them ET$$$$$, so, dumb denizens : “Repeat after me, 97% of scientists agree–except for the preponderance of evidence which you are not allowed to see.”

Environmentalism is an indulgence of rich countries.

Yup, Multinationals have known for yonks that SHEQ is only affordable by rich Countries.

  35. Faye

Climate Change is a marketing tool. Nothing to do with science. Something had to be invented to involve everyone on Earth. It had to grab peoples’ attention. Make them concerned-worried-scared-terrified whatever. We’re told only the experts/politicians/pseudo scientists/Marxists/dog’s bodies, know how to protect the masses against the coming catastrophe. Hence compliant populations.

Primarily, Climate Change is a money making machine for the elites who rule over a compliant human mass. It has to keep the blood suckers’ lifestyles heading north. Their lying “to save the planet” is their power tool. Various schemes have developed with the full backing of Governments, Big Environment, Big Corporations, Big Tech, Big Media, Big Universities, Big Religion, Big Entertainment, Big Royal and Big Names (eg Clintons, Soros, Bidens). Notice that “Little” doesn’t come into it. They are the dopes who provide the money through taxes, surcharges and regulations for renewables that don’t work and for governments who are failures. They will pay the costs for CO2 to be buried and/or swapped and for the good riddance of cheap reliable fossil fuels because obviously they are both dangerous.

Of course, “feelings” have to be accounted for. It is particularly dangerous for any worker working in a Woke Big Corporation or University, if they unknowingly hurt a co-worker’s sensitive woke feelings or be brave enough to stand up for the truth, such as Peter Ridd for the Great Barrier Reef.

Climate Change has certainly complicated and damaged our lives with worse to come. We can’t depend on governments – it is up to us to fight this revolution.

  36. yarpos

I noticed that the previously submerging Maldives, have just completed 4 more close to seas level airports.

They must be confident that we have the “problem” licked ….. or something

  37. Ceres

Yes, governments, media, big tech you name it, all singing from the leftie song sheet. Seems overwhelming and Trump is/was the shining light against all the crap. To think a dementia Joe will probably be inaugurated through fair or foul means, is truly appalling. I accept half the population in USA and here, are non curious indifferent citizens who as long as they are not queuing for their bread, are happy to be told what to do and think. Very depressing.

  38. Nob

Only with the “War on Drugs” after 50 years or so are we seeing countries and states starting to want to decriminalise/legalise some drugs such as Marijuana

    That’s cyclical.
Most people want anything with a possible negative effect to be banned.

If marijuana was legal everywhere for decades already, then the same people now clamouring for is legalisation would be clamouring for its criminalisation.

To anyone who tells me all drugs should be legalised , I ask if that includes thalidomide.

  39. PB

“Climate Change is a marketing tool. Nothing to do with science. Something had to be invented to involve everyone on Earth.”

That’s something I used to entertain years ago, when I thought that oil reserves were running down/demand up/easy to get oil exhausted (this is pre-fracking) and the easiest way to wean the world off the dwindling resource was to gin up a threat that made its abandonment a survival imperative with equal application to all.

  40. Chris M

To anyone who tells me all drugs should be legalised , I ask if that includes thalidomide.

Fully agree with you on the narcotics Nob but a better analogy might be chosen? Thalidomide was truly awful for the unexpected side effects on the unborn however it actually does have some other medical benefits and has recently been re-examined for alternate uses. Clearly quite a lot of medical drugs fall into this category, beneficial but can also cause varying levels of birth defects. Narcotics (including alcohol) have no measurable medical benefits and cause birth defects, so worse.

  41. Dave of Reedy Creek, Qld

A very simple word describes the rich western nations – SHEEP. After reading your article and hearing how Adelaide people are quite happy to be in quarantine over a hoax. I now have to accept that Australia has either become sheep for the slaughter or so brainwashed by and large that they have become robotic. Yes master, no master. US is a prime example of brainwashing by a vastly corrupt media and corrupt politicians who can’t see past the dollar signs.

  42. maree

Bruce of Newcastle, here at our place at Merewether, we don’t use the yellow bin for that reason. We have a mate who drops a skip bin every month for us to fill.

  43. Snotball

Maree. The yellow bin is redundant. Since the gummint introduced the 20c per drink container environmental tax it is quite OK to just throw them out the car window. It’s a tax that entitles you to pollute!

  44. Bear Necessities

We have legalised Alcohol and we tolerate Alcoholics in society.
We have legalised Gambling and we tolerate Chronic Gamblers in society.
We have legalised Tobacco and we tolerate addicted smokers in society.

The above addictions contains costs to society and end the lives of those who have those addictions early. But as a society we realise that making the above illegal would contain greater costs to society.

We should debate those drugs we want to have legally sold. I agree drugs like Thalidomide should not be.
At the moment the illegal drug industry based around cocaine, meth and other drugs attracts dubious characters and takes up huge amount of policing resources which should be better utilised. It also traps the addicted and their children in poverty.

  45. Bela Bartok

In rich countries, ordinary and working-class people will surely put up an insurmountable roadblock to restrictions on fossil fuels as soon as they figure out…

I know I’m melancholic, but the ordinary and working-class in all rich countries have been told in no uncertain terms they are degenerates, deplorables, toxic, wrong-thinking, bigoted, fascist, homophobic, transphobic, carbon-spewing, McMansion-dwelling Neanderthals by our ‘betters’.

These betters steal votes to overturn elections, get elected and then implement policies of their opposition, create COVID rules that destroy said ordinary/working-class whilst ignoring their own rules with impunity, allow horrendous abuses of justice (Pell), happily deride and defile the very institutions that ordinary and working-class people built and thrive in, and then all jet off to Davos.

There will be no insurmountable roadblock, as all avenues to create such have been removed (legislation to enforce dogma, physical police force used as dogma-enforcers, no responsibility etc.) That ship has sailed.

  46. bollux

“At the moment the illegal drug industry based around cocaine, meth and other drugs attracts dubious characters and takes up huge amount of policing resources which should be better utilised. It also traps the addicted and their children in poverty.”
I agree, what we really want are meth addicts roaming around legally, so the police can do community service and other good stuff.
How about the death penalty for possessing a trafficable amount?

  47. Astatine Jones

Same people dismissing the overwhelming evidence supporting anthropogenic climate change with their observational anecdotes and scientific ‘smoking guns’ as those clamouring about the non-existent evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 US election. And of course. it’s all the ABC’s fault!

  48. Kneel

“And if we’re not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?”

    Indeed.
As I say to my cat when chopping up veggies and she’s meowing for some food – “It’s not food, it’s what food eats.”

  49. Rex Anger

Oh look, the metalloid man has again chosen to bring the leftwit propaganda points as substotute for ‘reasoned’ argument.

Ah well, everyone has their preferred groupthink…

Not very inspired today, I’m sorry to tell you Metaloid Man.

  50. Kneel

    “How about the death penalty…”

    No.
    Not for anything, sorry.
    Reason being:
Are there people in this world who deserve to die and yet still live? Yes, undoubtedly.
Are there people in this world who deserved to live and yet died? Also yes, undoubtedly.
When you can give back life to those who didn’t deserve death, then I will support a death penalty. Unless and until then, you get no support from me on this issue.

  51. Kneel

“…the non-existent evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 US election…”

There are already publicly available affidavits indicating impropriety at least and fraud at worst.
This is evidence – not proof, but evidence. Sidney Powell has said she knows of many convicted felons who were convicted on less evidence than they have in this case.

In these cases Trump Team is bringing, it is NOT a criminal charge, it is a civil charge, which means “preponderance of evidence” standard, not “beyond reasonable doubt” as per criminal charges.
If what they have said is true and correct (which we can assume is so for the time being – we will know when it is presented at trial), 11,000+ such statements are a significant number, and it’s not hard to imagine this meeting the “preponderance of evidence” standard. But we’ll see…

And so it is with AGW – there is evidence that “the consensus” has several holes in it’s argument, and as time passes they appear to be getting worse, not better. The emperors new clothes have become fishnet stockings, and if things continue as they are, even that smidgeon of cover will also fade to the level of the fable. Again, we’ll see…

  52. Astatine Jones

No Rex A, nothing to do with left wing or right wing. I’m not a bird. Simply robust science and weight-of-evidence.
My general observation built on facts and reason in contrast to the usual statements confusing local weather obs with global climate trends, appeals to Thermodynamics and other branches of Science based on poor understanding and unfounded assumptions, and other reflex-responses typical of those who dismiss AGW without bothering to engage the higher parts of their brain.
Plenty of ‘reasoned argument’ re: AGW to be found all over the Web and in the scientific literature, no point me parroting it!

  53. Lee

The broken record; peddler of climate change BS is back!

The Vatican says Joe Biden to be Canonized

Case for Biden sainthood opened at the Vatican after he raised millions from the dead on Election Day

    Probably some truth in this!

  55. Judge Dredd

Professor Fred Lenin, yes, there’s a scam for every sucker out there. You can even argue that AIDS is a scam fairly convincingly. Yet, people will still consume the mainstream media like it tells the truth, even though it’s the devils propaganda tool.
