America’s Reichstag Fire

I saw that as a comment on some post somewhere referring to the “riot” at the Capitol in Washington, but it is exactly right. Alas, with ignorance so pervasive, hardly anyone will understand what is meant. Here is the Wikepedia entry to help you out: Reichstag Fire. There is no end of how much capital the American media and the far left (I know, the same thing) will make of it, but they will do their best. It really is amazing how politically stupid so many people are.

We are rushing into a Fascist America which will most assuredly be implemented during the next twelve months in the same way that the Reichstag fire allowed Hitler to consolidate power in the 1930s. In place of concentration camps or gulags will be the pervasive application of cancel culture, which is much better since it will cost much less to put in place.

And as interesting was this in The Age today: Beijing draws comparison between Capitol riots and Hong Kong protests. I could not have put it better myself. This is actually quite zany in its own way.

The Chinese government has joined the chorus of countries accusing the US of double standards, by comparing the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump and last year’s often-violent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, but noting that no one had died when demonstrators took over the legislature of the China-ruled city.

Clips of the chaotic scenes from Washington have aired repeatedly on Chinese state television.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily briefing that while events in Hong Kong in 2019, when the city’s legislature was stormed, were more “severe” than those in Washington, “not one demonstrator died”.

It’s the comparison in itself I find so appealing. The blending of the Democrats and the Communist Party of China is so clever that it has to have taken a genius to see it. Moreover, the point blank murder of a protestor did not occur in Hong Kong so draw your own comparisons is the point of the story from the Chinese perspective, filtered through Reuters which might as well have been Xinhua news.

RE LIQ: It really does depress me to read such moronic idiocies.

It didn’t have to be that way. Trump did accomplish a number of things along the way – the Iranian deal, the withdrawal from the Paris climate accord, tax simplification, re-balancing the courts etc….

If Trump was so good – as his advocates claim – he should have built upon his support base and attracted new voters. If he was so good, he had four years to win in a landslide.

But he didn’t. He couldn’t, because his character is not compatible with being a great US President. Instead he alienated so many people, motivating them to turn out in vast numbers on election day.

Not to discuss even the possibility of a stolen election is beyond parody. Nor to mention the booming economy until the Chinese flu arrived. If only he had been more polite. Such insight into the true nature of politics!

He lifted his support among women and some ethnic groups.
So much for being divisive, sexist and racist.
Before the fix was on he was coasting to a fairly comfortable victory.

  2. publius

maybe if he had prepared in advance it wouldn’t have been so easy for them to steal the election. like candy from a baby.
no advance battle planning for observer blockage.
no legal teams in-situ in battleground states.
no doj civil rights attorneys activated.
no potus legal team. and when one was appointed we got rudy, sidney and lin wood.

  4. PB

I saw it referred to as a minimum-wage Reichstag fire.

  5. Karabar

To put LIQ’s drivel in perspective, the Rasmussen poll indicates Trump’s approval with the American public has been rising since Christmas, and has topped 51%.
But this is not, or does not have to be over yet.
With the evidence now that the mechanism by which the votes were switched was through an arm of the Italian government, (Leonardo by the way was “on loan” to the Vatican), the evidence of interference by a foreign power is out in the open for all to see.
EO13848 is a powerful lever waiting to be pulled, but I suppose the swamp is so pervasive that the “intelligence community” is so full of traitors that teh machinery won’t respond to the lever.

  6. cuckoo

But didn’t Greg Sheridan assert in the Australian today that Trump had helped China? I’m confused.

  7. stackja

Did CCP devise Wuhan virus to create chaos in USA?
Biden will be friendlier than Trump.

In place of concentration camps or gulags will be the pervasive application of cancel culture, which is much better since it will cost much less to put in place.

So some high profile dimwits who supported Trump and his authoritarian and divisive instincts and ignore science opinions will find it hard for them to get jobs because companies and institutions don’t want to be embarrassed by associating with them?

Or, they’ll get a book deal cancelled by a big publisher and have to use a small RW publisher instead?

That’s your version of terrifying totalitarianism?

The IPA will still take them, so what’s the problem? Or – horrifyingly – self publish the E book at a cost of peanuts?

Look, if people want to badge themselves as supporting RW conspiracy nuts who invaded a seat of government threatening to hang Mike Pence for not using an imagined power to re-annoit Trump for another 4 years (yes, that is literally what they were calling for, it’s on tape), they deserve finding it hard to get a job or a publisher.

It is the free market and court of public opinion at play.

There will be more damaging disclosures of what Trump has said and done coming out soon enough. You don’t get so many resignations from the administration over recent events without good reason.

You should leave room for backtracking.

‘Not to discuss even the possibility of a stolen election is beyond parody. Nor to mention the booming economy until the Chinese flu arrived. If only he had been more polite.’
So true. It is shocking the number of otherwise intelligent people who buy into the narrative, woven from falsities and exclusions.
If the left gets away with their scam they know us better than we know ourselves. Their lies will have worked. There is a paradox here, as the fundamental objection to the left is that it hasn’t a clue about human nature, yet, on the other hand, the left seems to be able to game human nature (at least in the short term) quite successfully.

Look at this swamp fucker. 10 months of watching Antifa and BLM wreck the country, now he’s all action:

  11. John Dee

There is a very interesting rumour from the “riot” incident mentioned…
    Trump supporters were peaceful protesters.
There was an Antifa group that infiltrated the peaceful protest.
There may have been a special forces group involved.
Up to 12 laptops are allegedly missing post riot…including Pelosi’s.
As one commentator has already pointed out the Democrats have reacted in peak stress mode and are acting as though they have just lost the election rather than winning it.
If the rumour is true – and if the laptops contain very incriminating evidence – maybe they have just lost the election.
    We live in interesting times.

I rarely agree with Steve Kates- I find the hypocrisy of being paid by me whilst he bemoans almost anything any government does quite sickening (except for Trump of course, whom he seems to idolise)
But I’ve thought for months that the Reichstag fire analogy in fact is more apt applied to the stolen election fantasy. Trump sowed the seed for 6 months, then when the election was conducted exactly as it was going to be, with the mail votes being counted last, his goons tried to make pieces fit the jigsaw. I’m not going to list yet again all the people, many of the republicans, who say it’s baloney. You’ll believe what you want.
But the stolen election fraud has obviously convinced enough simpletons to conclude, just like in Germany in the 1930s, to surrender their freedoms. Just like the 30s, it’s the communists vs the far right. Except this isn’t a fractured Europe, it’s a superpower. When societies are this divided, we are in deep shit. Too deep to get out, I fear

Trump has street smarts so I was surprised he hadn’t contemplated the dirty tricks the democrat states would
possibly get up to. Perhaps difficult because the State Governors are in charge of the electoral process, unlike Australia. Having said that when you have the House, Senate and Presidency as he did in 2016 you need to get legislating and fast. That’s exactly what the Dems are about to do, on steroids.

What a great Presidency this has been. Pelosi and Hillary were not tied to a stake inside the capitol and burned as witches as I had thought might happen. So my view of the level of hatred by Republicans was way off. They are far more tolerant than I believed. Good on them. The left are nothing likeas tolerant. They would burn a baby if Trump had kissed it. But leaving that aside, it has been a truly great Presidency.

  22. Dot

Thank god they don’t hate Biden, imagine all the kids they’d have to put in ovens.

  23. Scott Osmond

All this has done is teach the next populist candidate, from the right or left, that playing anything but hardball will end in defeat. No more compromise, no more trusting institutions to do their jobs in an impartial fashion. This is why I was never a libertarian and left conservatism. The child like faith in institutions and systems of government. Systems and organisations run by corruptible people who have been raised and trained to believe in ideas counter to what is considered to be the western norm. I wasn’t surprised that the courts chose the “you don’t have standing” play whenever they are asked to make a ruling. That’s one way to insure evidence and discovery stays in the shadows. Another is banning from social media anyone demonstrating such evidence.

The post here is so far off base I can barely believe anyone could post it. Just be clear: Trump now faces inevitable judgment for his actions. He has tossed under the bus everyone who supported him through his term, even Mike Pence. Being a coward like most bullies Trump will likely go for a deal. I hope he gets none.

Win a few, lose on most. That’s my experience of commenting on the articles in The Australian. Similarly, my husband has had the same level of mostly non-success. Quite valid comments are axed, especially if they critique journalists or the paper for its limited choice of perspectives. We are thinking of canning our subscription; many of our friends have already done so and plenty of Cat here say the same thing. We have better things to do with our time and money than write unpublished commentary and read oppositional verbiage to our political interests. Sometimes, if a comment sneaks through, the number of ‘likes’ show that others in the reading audience agree with us. One might think a paper intent on keeping its subscribers might take more notice of such things. All part of the big ‘re-set’ now though I suspect.

More of it to come as well.

The Reichstag fire was used by Hitler as an excuse to introduce new powers over German citizens. This incident looks likely to be used by the Demonrats as an excuse to introduce new powers over American citizens.

Sadly, yes. We should recall how sensibly something similar was treated in Australia. In 1996 angry unionists led by a union president forced open the locked doors of the Australian Parliament and stormed into the building. They were stopped and ejected by security. Also, more recently, Prime Minister Gillard once lost a shoe in a similar sort of mob event. A review of security in both cases was the only outcome.

This storming of Capitol Hill should be treated similarly, but it won’t be, and that is Steve’s point.

  78. Visiting American

Judging from news overnight a great many if the violent traitors who attacked the Capitol have self identified with their blog posts and fb pictures. One who had Molotov cocktails and guns has been arrested. Their trials will reveal who was behind this and how much influence Trump had in directing their actions.

  79. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

  81. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

This is intemperate language indeed, Sir or Madam. A linguistic right you do not offer to others though.
Do you not wonder that many also see that what has happened in this election and during the months leading up to it, indeed, the whole of the demonisation and attempts to delegitimate President Trump, was also traitorous behaviour, including the storming of the Supreme Court during the Kavanah hearings?

Statism and the two forms it manifests.

The creation, empowerment and maintenance of state institutions is viewed very differently by the opposing sides of the body politic. Each side fights tirelessly for the status quo with differing beliefs in how they benefit.

Conservatives Statists believe these institutions are a warm blanket which provides them with protection from enemies both foreign and domestic, upholds their basic human and property rights and delivers them freedom of speech and mobility.

Liberal Statists see these same institutions as a blunt tool to dissolve basic human and property rights, restrict or remove freedom of speech and mobility and aid and abet enemies foreign and domestic.

Democracy is the means by which the powerful can move freely between the opposing positions.

The parallels one can draw from the events of 06/01/2021 and those of 11/09/2001 are many, surely not in the nature of each event but most certainly by the obvious consequences they present to basic human rights.

I read on this thread in the past few days a comment which denied the possibility of any official participation in the events of 9/11, the reasoning being that it would require many thousands of willing participants. I would suggest that all take a little time and consider how many thousands of willing participants collaborated in the events of the past 5 or so years.

The deep state and media are capable of anything. It’s all the same people, people.

  90. Kneel

“You really can’t think the attack on the US Capitol is a good thing?”

No Gaye, it was not a good thing at all.

When leftists did it, the media said “This is democracy!”, as well as “When you don’t listen to a large part of the community, this is what happens” – and they actually got into the chamber!
Same thing with BLM and Antifa riots – “mostly peaceful” while a 1000m2 shop burns in the background.
IOW, the media has been saying for months, even years, that political violence is OK if your cause is just and the other side and the establishment won’t hear what you have to say.
If some on the right took that advice and believed themselves to be working for a just cause, and that they were not being heard, who is to blame for what happened?

It is interesting, is it not, that Fox News’ right-wing talking heads condemned violence during BLM/Antifa months long riots, and also condemned what happened on the 6th, yet there are calls to pressure cable TV suppliers to ban Fox News because they “encouraged” violence on the 6th and “fanned the flames” – as if CNN for one didn’t do exactly the same thing wrt BLM/Antifa, arguably worse.

Interesting too, that Parler App has been removed from Google Play Store and Apple is threatening removal from their App Store too because of “fake news” type stuff. There is much you cannot say on Parler that you can on twitter – different terms of service. Parler is, IIRC, in the top ten downloaded apps – certainly the top 20.

Interesting too, that Twitter removed a video from Trump saying “be peaceful and go home” simply for also adding a “disputed claim” (election fraud) and thanking supporters for showing up, yet the leftists say Trump is to blame. Is Kamala Harris’ video saying “they won’t stop – and they shouldn’t” re: BLM riots in the same class? Seems to me it is, if anything, worse – yet it remains up, and is even lauded by the wokerati on twitter.

Both Twitter and Parler claim to be the “town square”/”soapbox” platforms of today, even getting “common carrier” style exemptions from being sued, yet while twitter removes “stolen election” posts for 2020, the claims of 2016 “stolen election” remain up and no-one is banned for posting them. Yet it is Parler, which does not remove either of these that is “the badie” and is to be removed for “potentially harmful” posts.

George Orwell was correct when said that free speech is the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear. You don’t need to listen, you don’t need to believe, but you do need to allow it to be said. If you think it’s wrong, say so! The answer to bad speech is good speech – if you are certain of your moral superiority and that the majority support you, why stifle the other side? Better to have them present their case and be laughed off stage, than to attempt to silence them and drive them underground where they will never hear the arguments against them.

  91. Paul

motivating them to turn out in vast numbers on election day.

Much in the same vein as that great socialist hero Obama who ordered out the violent #resistance over the past 4 years.

Obama proving that violence against political opponents is far more effective than a stasi style policing.

  92. Visiting American

Deflect. Deflect. Deflect. Here we have the President promoting violence against Congress after having demanded that his VP override the Constitution and attempt to have a State deliver false electoral results. You folks approve! Pray it never happens here. Though I fear that’s what you have in mind.

  93. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

They came after direct encouragement by the President.

President Trump has never encouraged nor fostered violence in any way. He does understand however why people are angry, because their claims of electoral fraud have been silenced, and has no disagreement with peaceful protests. Why can his supporters not say what they think on public media, and then legally try to make their case? There is a long way to go yet with analysing what happened during this last election. It cannot be swept away with Democrat wishful thinking nor by deplatforming free speech.

Biden will never be a peacemaker in the US until free speech is restored.

  94. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

demanded that his VP override the Constitution

The VP had Constitutional grounds to override decisions in certain circumstances where the Constitution may have been under threat, a provision which Trump discussed with his VP. The VP made the call on his interpretation of those Constitutional grounds. A discussion of those grounds between President and VP is not a demand, by the way. Were you there?

  96. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

I have an American daughter-in-law and grandson living in Sydney, and an Aunt and a whole family of seven American cousins with whom I visit in the US. Perhaps I too an an ‘American visitor’. 🙂

  97. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Passing an electoral result that may have been obtained unconstitutionally is in itself unconstitutional. That is why the VP had to consider seriously whether to pass this result or not: that is what the American Constitution says and that is what the VP did. The President had every right and responsibility to discuss this issue of the constitutionality of the VP’s actions with him.

  98. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

“You really can’t think the attack on the US Capitol is a good thing?”

No Gaye, it was not a good thing at all.

I agree. A totally peaceful demonstration as permitted near the Capitol, which this largely was, would have been better. Even better would have been for Twitter, Facebook and the MSM to have carried more free speech about the value and virtues of the Trump Presidency, and less total denigration of the man and his achievements. This would have done far more to calm the debate than the aggressive deplatforming and arrant nonsense that nearly all the MSM served up to over 70 million US voters via pressured ‘turncoat’ journalists as well as the usual suspects. It has been a disgusting spectacle to watch and read.

  99. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

By the way, ‘American Visitor’, raising the issue of Q around here is a mis-reading of Cat commenters.

Most of us think such things are lunacies, and more like crazy leftism in gullibility than anything else.

  100. Visiting American

Largely peaceful except for the deaths and destruction. Believe what you choose but soon the evidence will be in court and we’ll see if the defense attorneys offer you any hope. I think not.

  101. Cassie of Sydney

“Largely peaceful except for the deaths and destruction. Believe what you choose”

LOL So VA, just just like the riots of the last seven months have been largely peaceful except for the deaths and destruction. Believe what you choose.

VA is an appropriate abbreviation……sounds like a venereal disease.

  102. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Largely peaceful except for the deaths and destruction

All death and destruction should have its day in Court. Including whoever murdered that woman in cold blood during that Capitol Hill situation, and the many people killed, injured and economically wounded by the various BLM riots that started this violence. Let them all get justice, all victims of rioting, and let perpetrators be brought to trial to account for themselves in ALL of these cases too.

You’d surely be in favour of that now, wouldn’t you?

  103. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Beare

Make it VI, Cassie. Visiting Idiot.

You get those. Hope it’s gone back to its cave now.
I’m too busy to bring further sense to its claims today.

Largely peaceful except for the deaths and destruction. Believe what you choose …

    Delusional!
Yours is a classic Democrat talking point – but at least 19 people died, in riotous behaviour condoned and even urged on by many Democrats and their supporters in the MSM.

    Looney leftist.

  111. Visiting American

Trump actions are out of the kind often associated with left totalitarians. Trump said he would only accept election results if he won. Exactly as per playbook of Burma’s military socialists. Putin adopted the same mode. As does the CCP which has elections in which one party participates. Trump aimed to join the crew he likes in eliminating electors from the power process. But our democracy has overcome his treachery.
The voices for Trump should heed what is being said right now by the true conservatives and people who have proven their commitment to the values of the Constitution.

  112. Grip

It is utter bullshit to say that Democrats wanted BLM protests to become violent and attack private or public property. It was civil unrest borne of highly racially charged deaths, which Trump was uniquely unsuited to calm, given his reflexive (and historical) instinct to run to defend police in any circumstances and particularly where race is involved.

    A completely different thing to
a mob breaking into the seat of government while literally threatening to hang Mike Pence for being the one to follow the constitution.

You know it’s different, I reckon, but rely on empty moral equivalence as your only defence.

  113. covid ate my homework

Canonising a porn star, counterfeiter, stand-over man and general thug is ridiculous and his untimely death does not constitute cause for months of wholesale destruction and the deaths of 29 odd people. After all the knee on the neck was a “co-morbidity”.

OK, so my mum makes me watch TV news while I’m stuck here in NSW. On comes a gloating report about Donald soon being “impeached”.Two stories later we’re told that dear leader Kim of North Korea is now planning a fleet of nuclear armed submarines….and that the US is enemy #1.

There is zero attempt to join the dots. The North “should focus and be developed on subverting the US, the biggest obstacle for our revolution and our biggest enemy”, Mr Kim told the five-yearly congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, the official KCNA news agency reported.”

And, of course, China is supporting them very openly once again.

Why China feels suddenly so emboldened is not covered.
