Since this condition of leisure and empowerment, as well as a perception of external threats as non-existential, are the results of a society’s success, success is, ironically, a prerequisite for a society’s self-hatred. What Freud has called the “narcissism of small differences” (in Civilization and Its Discontents)—the urge to compete against others even through minor distinctions like a virtuous action or the newest gadget—becomes one motivation through which a particular interest expresses its superiority over others.

    These people “know” everyone that looks like them is racist because they are racist. The “know” everyone has “unconscious bias” because they have quite conscious bias. And it couldn’t possibly just be their own personal failing, No! EVERYONE must be in the same boat.

    The very idea that someone else could just simply not be struggling with the inner demons of racist is beyond comprehension. It’s just part of knowing that you’re better than… other people.

    My feelings too, I feel sorry for this kid because for the rest of time this will be available on the internet for people to laugh at. She’s a middle class kid – get the fridge magnets – and she’s indoctrinated to show off her clever and ‘woke’ self-esteem even when she’s pretending she doesn’t have it. One day she will grow up, marry, settle down in the suburbs with a family, and maybe even vote conservative, because life does that.

    She’ll still be singing that song on the internet though. Poor kid.
