Michael Oakeshott again

In view of the Doomlord’s high regard for Michael Oakeshott, possibly placing him to the middle spot on the podium of modern philosophers, it was distressing to see the lack of recognition of the great man in the immediate responses to the heads up about the Oakshott conference. Cats really need to get with the program, so for a start just glance through the contents of this special edition of Cosmos and Taxis.

Just hit the link and check out the table of contents, I dare you!

    Dogmatomachy: Ideological Warfare

Well, I had to look into Dogmatomachy!

It was Eric Voegelin’s term for “conflict over opinions; motivated by philodoxy.”

A philodox is “one who loves his own opinions; an argumentative or dogmatic person.”

This relates back to your earlier post about knowledge vs. opinion, Rafe.

We could say that the rule of law in Australia has been superceded by dogmatomachy.

I love Oakeshott, and have many of his books in my library. I certainly won’t be going to hang out with a bunch of other weirdos who like Oakeshott, however.

  3. Spurgeon Monkfish III says:

That’s a magnificent painting, reminiscent of Magritte.

  4. Michael says:

Should have a trigger warning every time the name Oakeshott is mentioned.
(I’m being sarcastic, and like SM III, I too quite like the painting)
